    KINDS OF STITCHES

    1. Running stitch

The running stitch is good for outlining an emroider! design and is a "er! #uic$ stitch to

do. There are t%o %a!s to do the running stitch& the first method is similar to hand se%ingand can e com'leted ! 'ushing the needle and floss in and o"er the faric in one

continuous motion( the second method can e literall! 'ushing the needle through the

faric and 'ulling it ac$ u'. I ha"e heard this called the )'unch and 'o$e* or )staing*

    method.

emroidering te/t or outlining a design. ,egin ! 'ulling the needle and floss u' through

the faric and do one stitch for%ard. From underneath s'ace the needle out the length of

!our desired stitch 'ull u' through the faric and ring the needle and floss ac$ do%n

    0. S'lit stitch

Similar to the ac$stitch the s'lit stitch creates a solid line %ith an added te/ture to it.

This stitch is a''ro'riate for te/t and outline as %ell ut it also %or$s to fill designs and

create "ariation from the running or ac$stitch. To egin 'ull !our needle and floss u'

through the faric and create one straight stitch. our needle and floss should e on the

underside of !our hoo'. ,ring the needle u' through the center of the stitch !ou 2ust

created and stitch for%ard the same length as !our initial stitch. Re'eat ! ringing the

needle u' through the center of each stitch.

    3. Stem stitch

The stem stitch got its name from eing the common stitch used for the stems of flo%ers

or "ines. I li$e to use this stitch for te/t ecause it can cur"e nicel! %ith letters. Similar

to the s'lit stitch !ou create one straight stitch for%ard and ring the needle and floss

u' underneath the faric ut instead of going through the center of this initial stitch !ou

%ill ring the needle u' 2ust to the side of the stitch.

    4. Satin stitch

5 good filler stitch the satin stitch creates a smooth a''earance. I li$e to use this stitch

to fill in hearts or the lea"es of flo%ers. Ta$e !our needle and floss and create one stitch.

,ring the needle u' again 2ust ne/t to the o''osite side of the initial stitch. Kee' the

stitches close to one another as re#uired to fill the 'attern or design !ou are %or$ing

    This is a fa"orite decorati"e stitch for almost e"er!one that I $no%. French Knots can e

used to accent designs or create fun fillers for most designs. ou7ll ha"e to use t%o handsto create the French Knot ! ringing the needle and floss u' through the faric and

%ra''ing the floss around the needle t%ice. Hold the end of the floss taut and ring the

needle do%n 2ust ne/t to the s'ace %here it came out through. Kee' holding the floss taut

    9. Chain stitch

    I used to thin$ I %ould ne"er learn to do this stitch then I tried it and no% I lo"e using

the chain stitch. It ma$es for a great outline stitch as %ell as a frame for a 'attern or

design. Ta$e !our needle and floss and create a stitch ut efore !ou 'ull the floss all the

%a! through the faric allo% it to form a loo'. ,ring the needle u' through that loo' in

order to tether it from eing 'ulled all the %a! through the faric and 'ull. :lace the

needle either directl! in the hole !ou 2ust stitched or close to it and 'ull through creating

another loo' ! not 'ulling the floss com'letel! through the faric. :ull the needle u'

through the loo' to tether it and 'ull. Re'eat the ste's to continue the chain. ;hen !ou

    ?.Feather stitch

5nother "ariation of a chain stitch is the feather stitch. This stitch loo$s great as a frame or

order to an emroidered 'iece. Similar to the chain stitch !ou %ill use the second stitch to anchor

the loo' of the 're"ious stitch ut this stitch co"ers more s'ace. ,ring the needle and floss u'

through the faric and create a straight stitch ut don7t 'ull the floss all the %a! through. 5llo% aloo' to form and ring the needle u' through that loo'. S'ace the ne/t stitch o"er in the o''osite
