English Language Arts (ELA) Purple Group We started January off by revising what we learned before Christmas. We played games where they had to group the flash cards pictures according to the matching pictures and letters - the children had fun learning practically. Recently I noticed that the children were ready for a bit of a challenge. They had been very diligent with their singing of the alphabet song and so I introduced a song that combined the letter, the phonetic sound as well as a word that starts with that letter. We have In January, Dae Yoon celebrated his birthday. Congratula- tions! Orange Group We started off this month talking and sharing about the adventures we had during the winter break. The students were excited to share their experiences with their friends. We then reviewed some of the work that we covered in the months before, such as, adjectives, CVC words and sight words. We will continue to review concepts that we have covered this school year throughout this month. We also practiced writing the alphabet while using our pointer finger to leave spaces between them. The students are enjoying ELA story time. Most of the books kept in line with our theme of the month. Keep up the awesome effort Orange Group! Green Group This month we completed the 6 th reading skills unit which focused on; story comprehension, the –ish word family, categorization and the initial consonant blend /sw/. The ten opposite word pairs for January were; fiction/fact, odd/even, full/empty, difficult/easy, sky/ground, shallow/deep, night/day, go/come, dirty/clean, and sell/buy. Some of the words that came up in our group discussions were; ‘Australia’, ‘seaweed’, ‘cellar’, ‘if’, ‘customer’, ‘appointment’, ‘billiards’, ‘table tennis’, ‘bison’, ‘private’ and ‘public’. We have been reading The Smurfs Phonics Fun book series which reviews the short and long vowel sounds. Keep up the strong effort Green Group. You are speaking and reading English beautifully these days! Super proud of you all. Annual sexual education seminar Dear Parents, A new year is upon us - welcome 2020. As we enter the last few weeks of the school year we look forward to graduation with mixed feelings. We are very proud of our graduates, they have learned and grown so much this year but we are also sad to see them go, as are the younger students. Soon we will begin our preparation for graduation. I would like to appeal to all parents, if possible, please avoid your child being absent in February. We hope to make many happy memories for all our students but we need time to do so. The 2020 graduation ceremony will be on Wednesday, February 26 th at 10am. The families of our graduates, please make a note of this important date. Finally, we would like to extend the warmest of greetings to all our SIS families for the upcoming Lunar New Year. We wish you good health, happiness and prosperity in the coming year! Activity ClassThe children have been so enthusiastic since they came back from the winter breakand they have had fun exploring their bodies. I loved linking their activity lessons tothe theme and we played vocabulary games such as ‘Body Part Four Corners’ and‘Body Part Drop the Cone’ -this game tested their aim and ball skills along withreinforcing the theme vocabulary. The children had fun testing their lungs with theactivity where they had to blow a cup across the table. We have been reading abouthow to live healthy lives through books titled; My Healthy Body by Bobbie Calmanand Teeth by Pete Jenkins. Our gym days have been filled with yoga activities to helpthe children with their balance and we have been playing active games such as dodgeball, bump and lightning bolt to get their bodies moving with agility.

Theme Education Our theme for January is My Body and Teeth. In week 1 welearned the names of the different bones and muscles in ourbody. We also learned how bones and muscles help our bodywork. In week 2 we learned the names of some of the majorinternal organs in our body. We also learned about ourrespiratory, circulatory and digestive systems. In week 3 wefocused on the Lunar New Year. We made a money pouch as ourcraft. In week 4 we will focus on health and hygiene. We will learnon how to keep our bones, muscles and organs healthy. Thetheme songs for this month are “The Bones Song” and “The HeartSong”.
