Known as Australia's bloodiest day, the 1916 Battle of Fromelles took 5533 Australian casualties, including 1917 lives. Fighting alongside British Troops, the objective was to capture and hold a line of German trenches in an effort to prevent the enemy from sending reinforcements to the Somme. Struck by the Royal Australian Mint, this cupro-nickel uncirculated 50¢ reverse was skillfully composed from a variety of historical photographs documenting the lives of the 5th division of the Western Front.

Australia’s main contribution to the battle of the Somme in mid-1916 was the capture of Pozières, a small village that commanded the high ground towards Thiepval. Between July and August, Australians had suffered a staggering 26,000 casualties.

Also struck by the Royal Australian Mint, this cupro-nickel 50 cent uncirculated is encapsulated on a presentation card, with a mintage of 15,000.
