Kingfisher RTUs provide both important operationaldata and manual or automatic control of devices atremote locations. For example, in a water distributionsystem, reservoir and tank levels can be adjusted bythe automated control of pump stations and diversionvalves. A Kingfisher Telemetry system allows anumber of control strategies to be active that arebased on dynamic system data, which can includevariables such as the weather (expected demand),availability of water, status of pumps and otherequipment, the cost of power (ie. peak v off-peak

tariff) and the priority of the system ‘events’. Pumpstation RTUs provide statistics for each pump thatinclude starts, hours run, manage rotation of pumpduty and allow analysis of pump efficiency.

RTU configuration and diagnostic programoffers on-line help, configuration examples,

and drag and drop capabilities. TOOLBOX featuresIEC 61131-3 compliant editing and allows you to configure

RTUs remotely or locally, on-line or off-line, and from RTU toRTU, or PC to RTU. Control is implemented using ladder

logic. Ladder logic is compiled and downloaded into the RTU.The use of databases for definition of I/O and system variablesallows the importing and exporting of configuration data to and

Traditionally RTUs were used in the water industrysimply for monitoring of system alarms and‘connection’ of tank level data to pump stations forthe stopping and starting of pumps. Applications forKingfisher RTUs in the water industry now includemonitoring and control of equipment at pumpstations, reservoirs, treatment plants, pipelines,meters, valve stations, dosing points and waterquality sites.

Kingfisher RTUs’ advanced logic capability allowsPID control, accumulation of flow totals, complexcalculations and manipulation of system data.Communications flexibility is achieved using arange of media that includes PSTN, leased line,radio, cellular and satellite interfaces. The lowpower operation allows significant cost savingsto be achieved when using RTUs in solar andbattery powered applications.

A common application for Kingfisher RTUs is wetwell control in waste water pumping stations. TheRTU stops and starts the pumps; checks pumpavailability and rotates pump usage; accumulatespump information such as starts and hours run;and provides advanced alarming on pumps.

In large waste water systems, RTUs are used tomanage and balance the flow to the treatment plantto achieve a more constant throughput. This isachieved by analysis of RTU data that includesthe storage capacity and inflow rate to dynamicallycontrol pump stations, ensuring that plant operationsrun more efficiently by reducing the effects ofmorning and afternoon peak periods.

There are plenty of applications for Kingfisher RTUsin the power industry. The more popular applicationsinclude pole top switching applications, substationautomation, power plant control and customermetering.

A number of recent applications for Kingfisher RTUshave been in substation automation projects.Electrical substations typically require RTUs withlarge I/O counts, isolated communications and I/Oconnections, system-wide clock synchronisation,

There are many applications for Kingfisher RTUs toprovide monitoring and control solutions for thetransportation industry.

Air transport applications include monitoring ofaircraft landing systems, airport stormwater control,monitoring of aerobridges and control of aircraftrefuelling systems. Kingfisher RTUs have been usedat a number of airforce bases for the management offuel storage and distribution. In this application,RTUs can be connected via diverse communicationspaths at tanks, valves, pumps and delivery points toprovide a system solution with a high level of failsafe

and redundant features. This ensures reliableoperation even if parts of the system becomeunavailable due to damage.

Applications for Kingfisher RTUs in rail transportsystems include monitoring of station platforms, railcommunication systems and train safety and controlsystems. One large train control application involvedmore than 200 RTUs that were used in themanagement of traction control (rail electrification).The RTUs were used at track side locations for themonitoring and control of isolation of the high voltagesupply that powers the trains.

Kingfisher RTUs have been used in a variety of oiland gas applications that include a gas plant in thehighlands of Papua New Guinea, pipeline monitoringin Thailand and gas metering in China.

KINGFISHER IN THEMINING INDUSTRY

Kingfisher RTUs can be found in mining applicationsthat include coalfields, gold mines, uranium minesand various mineral sands and metals mines. TheRTUs are used both above and below ground toperform monitoring and control of a wide range ofequipment and services.

The RTUs provide monitoring of operational datasuch as ground water depth, slope movement andthe status and position of excavation equipment.In below ground applications the RTUs typicallycommunicate via radio over leaky co-ax and functionsinclude monitoring and control of underground pump

stations, power substations, exhaust fans andpersonnel safety systems. The RTUs are oftenhoused on skid mounted frames that allow easytransportation as the mine site requirements change.

Most mining sites use and discharge considerablequantities of water, hence Kingfisher RTUs are usedto control bore field pumps, transfer pumps andstorage and treatment facilities. The environmentalsafety requirements also mean that RTUs are used atdischarge and downstream monitoring points toensure compliance with mine licences andenvironmental laws.

Broadcasting of radio and television signals requiresmonitoring and control of remote facilities. This mayinclude monitoring of translators and transmitters,remote supervisory control of transmitter changeoverand generation of alphanumeric pager messages bythe RTU when alarms occur. eg. the RTU can notifya system technician that the standby generator islow on fuel, or that site security has been breached.The data logging features of the RTUs also allowremote diagnostics of fault sequences to improve thefault finding process.

A recent project in New Zealand utilised around 80Kingfisher RTUs to provide monitoring and control oftelevision transmission sites in both the Northern andSouthern Islands. Each RTU has an ethernet portconnected to a 10Mbps data highway that providessystem operators with very fast system responses.

KINGFISHER IN OTHER INDUSTRIESAND APPLICATIONSThe flexibility of the Kingfisher RTU range allowsthem to be used in virtually any application. Someexamples of specific applications Kingfisher RTUshave been adapted to work in include:

Video Monitoring –Using slow scan video captureThe CP-10/CP-21/MC-10 modules and LP-1 styleRTU can use the dual channel video ‘V’ port optionto capture video pictures. Individual frames arecompressed using the JPEG algorithm by a DSP(Digital Signal Processor) on the daughter boardfor storage in RTU memory. Applications for videocapture have included both operations and securitymonitoring.

The example shown is reservoir security monitoringwhere a video camera mounted on top of a reservoirtakes three pictures two seconds apart if the reservoirhatch switch or movement detector are activated.

Gas MeteringKingfisher RTUs have been used in a wide rangeof gas metering applications. The floating pointand advanced maths capability combined with arange of gas flow calculations that include AGA-1,AGA-3, AGA-7 and AGA-8 (both gross and detailmethods) allow the Kingfisher RTU to be used asa flow computer. The ‘H’ port option allows interfaceto HART based transducers in high accuracyapplications to avoid measurement conversion errors.

Short Message Service (SMS) forPaging and RTU operation by phoneKingfisher RTUs are able to generate pager stylemessages for transmission to alpha-numeric pagersor cellular phones. The RTUs also have ASCII stringparsing functions that allow reading of ASCIImessages that are sent to the RTU. This allows aremote user to adjust setpoints and control outputsremotely from a cellular phone!

ProtocolsAll Kingfisher RTUs communicate using Kingfisher,MODBUS or DNP3 protocols. In addition there aremore than 40 device style protocols that have beenimplemented for connection to a wide range of PLCs,flow computers, data loggers, weather stations, re-closers, communication networks, etc. The CP-21style processor also supports TCP/IP communicationover serial and ethernet connections.

A RANGE OF INTEGRATEDAND PACKAGED RTU SOLUTIONSKingfisher RTUs are available in both modular andintegrated form. For most applications, the modularsolution gives flexibility to meet present and futurerequirements. Where I/O and communicationsport requirements are minimal and when powerconsumption is critical, the Kingfisher ERS MicroOne and LP-1 Low Power RTU should be considered.

ERS Micro One RTUThe Kingfisher ERS Micro One RTU is a fullypackaged solution for Emergency Relief StructureMonitoring. The ERS Micro One features processor,I/O and communications interfaces, housed in a verysmall integrated package. The ERS Micro One RTUhas 4 x analog inputs, 8 x digital inputs, 2 x digitaloutputs, 1 x RS232 port and 1 x IrDA port and runsan application specific program (factory modified only).

LP-1 Low Power RTUThe Kingfisher LP-1 Low Power RTU is packagedin a two part plastic enclosure that houses theelectronics, communications interfaces and standbybattery. I/O includes 4 x analog inputs, 8 x digitalinputs and 2 x digital outputs. Note: digital inputs5-8 can be configured as digital outputs.

Communications ports include two fixed ports andtwo option ports. Port 1 is RS232 and port 2 isconfigurable as RS232/RS422/RS485. Port 3 isan optional factory fitted data radio or GSM cellularradio. Port 4 can be loaded with comms daughterboards that include, RS232/RS422/RS485, PSTN,2/4 wire leased line, fibre optic or dual channelvideo capture.
