There is so much happening across the school and lots of exciting news to report. First and foremost, we have had a huge number of students achieve individual success in various sporting pursuits. I have previously reported on students who qualified for Seven Hills/Wentworthville representative PSSA teams, and now we are starting to have students selected to participate in state carnivals as representatives of all of Sydney West. A huge congratulations to Aaliyah T (netball), Zac W (AFL), Danroy K (AFL), Kade B (football), Nathan G (football), Jessica C (football) and Isabella D (basketball). These are all truly amazing achievements as the competition for places in these teams in incredibly high. A special congratulations must got to the amazing Darcy F who has been selected for touch football, rugby league and AFL; a truly remarkable achievement and one to be commended. As these carnivals continue to roll and more teams are selected, I will be sure to keep you informed of those students who enjoy success. Another student who has demonstrated amazing achievement in the sporting world is Alana L, who has been selected to represent NSW at the Australian Gymnastics Championships. We wish her all the very best, though we are already incredibly proud that she has made it to this level. Cross Country On Monday of week 2 we held our annual Cross Country Carnival. The weather was incredibly kind to us and it was wonderful to see so many children doing their best as they participated in the carnival. Students who finished in the top five in the 8 & 9 years, 10 years, 11 years and 12 years will now go on to represent the school at the Seven Hills/Wentworthville Zone carnival tomorrow. We wish these students every success. I would also like to thank Miss Codrington and Mrs McNamara for all the hard work that they put in to organising the carnival. The hours of hard work in preparation certainly paid off! Athletics Carnival Our next carnival for the year will be the school Athletics Carnival. This carnival will be held in Week 5 of Term 3 (August 20 th ). This year, we are trialling an offsite venue for the carnival, holding the event at the purpose built athletics facility at Blacktown Olympic Park. The carnival will continue to be a K-6 event for all students. More information relating to this event will be available closer to the date. STEAMQuake On 2nd May Miss Andrews, Mrs Moylan, Mrs Wainscott and I accompanied a group of our students as they headed off to Powerhouse Museum for the launch of the STEAMQuake initiative. The cross school project involves two High Schools and four primary schools from across the Quakers Hill Network. Our students are working with children from across the schools as they work towards solving a variety of problems with a view towards colonising Mars. The project is students directed, with children identifying the issues the colonisation of Mars brings and then working through potential solutions. The life skills students will learn from this will be critical as they move through high school and into future employment. We are excited to see where this journey takes our students and we will be sure to keep you updated. Band Camp Last week our band students travelled to Arcadia for 3 days at band camp. The students enjoyed an intensive band program over these three days and from all reports the progress made by the students in this time is quite remarkable. Thank you to Mr Clark for all of his hard work in organising this event, and a huge thank you to Mrs De Kauwe and Mrs McNamara for supervising the students over the three days. It is no small feat to leave your family and give up your own time for three days, and without them this event couldn’t have occurred. Stewart House Last Friday, Mrs Mar and I escorted our student leaders to Stewart House where they accepted an award on behalf of the school for our fundraising efforts in 2018. The school was one of just 10 schools across the state who received a platinum award. Our leaders got to see the amazing work that Stewart House does for students in need and got a better understanding of what a wonderfully worthwhile cause

this is. We look forward to continuing our support over the coming years.

NAPLAN This week, students in Year 3 and 5 commenced their NAPLAN assessments. Once again, the school will be completing these tests using the online format, which will be a great advantage for our children when the whole state eventually completes the tests in this manner. The tests will all be completed by early next week and we will then resume normal routines. Aboriginal Yarning Circle Next Tuesday we will have the official opening of the school’s Yarning Circle. Students have worked tirelessly, painting and preparing totems and seating for the area as part of Koori time with Mrs Hutton. For those who have seen the area, I think you’ll agree that the finished product looks brilliant and adds a bright and vibrant aspect to the playground. Indigenous pop singer Christine Anu will officially open the area after performing for our students as part of NAIDOC celebrations. Community Initiatives One of the great strengths of our school is the connection we have with our wider community. We are constantly looking for ways to further grow and develop this bond with our families, and we have made a commitment this year to look for ways to open our doors even more so. You would already know about the information sessions and workshops run by our community engagement officer, Mrs Sloan, some of which are filmed and shared on our private You Tube channel. We are looking at what other information we can share using this platform for our working parents who can’t always make it in to the school. Earlier this term our Stage 1 team ran a community information session on how to support reading strategies in Year 1 and 2, with an overwhelmingly positive response from all those who attended. Thank you to Mrs Chapman and Mrs McMahon who did an outstanding job organising this event. Kindergarten are looking at running a similar session on THRASS. Year 3 and 4 teachers will be bringing people in for a breakfast, while our Year 5 and 6 classes will be coordinating a STEAM Showcase in our school hall. Details of all of these events will be available shortly and we would love to see you there!

Golden Grove Gate As many of you will be aware, the council has made the decision to barricade the grate on Golden Grove just outside of the school fence as it presents a trip hazard. Unfortunately we were not notified that they were going to do this which caused some problems on Friday afternoon as students left the school. We are working with council to get this fixed as soon as possible. In the meantime, we are supporting students as they enter and exit the school where we can. Thank you for your patience as we get this resolved. P&C Meetings On the second Monday of every month, our P&C meet in the school library to discuss a range of topics concerning the school. As part of these meetings, the school reports back to the community on what is happening within the school and provides updates on various key initiatives. During the May meeting, Mrs Pintado and Miss Kelly briefed those in attendance about the changes being made to our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) reward system. At the June meeting, I will be explaining the changes to reports. During the August meeting (next term), Mrs Sloan will be hosting a session on the transition of students to High School. All parents are welcome to attend P&C meetings and we would love to see you there. If there are any specific topics you would like to be covered in one of these meetings, please contact the school. Mother’s Day Stall- Volunteers Week Last week, our wonderful P&C organised our annual Mother’s Day stall. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who gave up their time to support the school. As we head into National Volunteers Week next week, it’s a timely reminder of how lucky we are at this school to have such a fantastic school community behind us who allows these sorts of events to occur. Election This Saturday, the school will be open as a polling station. Be sure to pop in to the school to cast your vote and enjoy the best part of any election- the school sausage sizzle! If you’re not voting on the day for whatever reason, why not stop in for lunch and support the school in the process!

Nintendo Switch Pilot Our school was selected to be part of a pilot program involving the use of Nintendo Switch consoles as teaching tools. Students in Stage 1 had the opportunity late last term to work with the consoles under the guidance of expert trainers from the Nintendo Lab and we are continuing to trial the consoles in selected classes to see what additional benefits they can bring. Having the consoles supplied to the school at no cost has given our students an exciting and engaging learning platform as they continue to develop the various soft skills required in this new digital age. Kindergarten Enrolments We have already started accepting enrolments for Kindergarten in 2020. If you have a child starting school next year, please pick up an enrolment form from the office so that we can include them in our planning for next year.

CAKE DAY - On Thursday May 30 the SRC will be holding a cake stall. Cakes will cost 50cents each. We are asking Year 6 to supply some delicious cakes, chocolate crackles or toffees which will be sold at recess. NOTE: Year 6 parents please don’t forget to label all containers and lids with your child’s name and class. SRC Publicity Officers STEWART HOUSE - Today each family has been issued with a bag for used clothing. If you wish to contribute, please return the bag to the front entrance of the hall. If your child does not bring a bag home or you need an extra bag, any suitable plastic bag from home can be used. The last day for collection is Friday June 7. Please DO NOT RETURN BAGS AFTER THIS DATE as once the bags are collected we have no storage space for bags which are returned late. We thank you for your co-operation.

STEAMQUAKE On Thursday 2nd May, 2019 students in STEAMquake participated in an excursion to the Powerhouse Museum. While we were there, we learned all about colonising Mars and how to live sustainably. We looked at what the inside of a rocket looks like and even what Mars looks like. There was a room that looked like Mars and we went in it. There were different rocks we learned about and some of us even were able to control a rover. Another thing we learned about was living sustainably on Earth before we tried to colonise Mars. It was called Eco Logic. In Eco Logic we looked around a set up house which helped us learn the right way to be sustainable. We had to code a device that measured the moisture in the soil. This would help us not to waste water in Mars. At the end of the day we researched how we would be sustainable on Mars. We each chose a topic or something that we thought was the most important on Mars. We are excited for the rest of the year. Eva S 5S

Mick Elliott’s Author Visit On Wednesday, 18th May, Mick Elliott, an Australian author and illustrator, visited our school. He spoke to our Years 3 to 6 students and teachers. His talks were very interesting and interactive for the students. For many years Mick has also worked in children’s television, and he shared some of these experiences with our students. He also read the first chapter of his first book “The Turners”. Mick’s talk had the students enthralled and entertained, and they asked him some very interesting and insightful questions. Mick complimented our students for their wonderful behaviour during the talks. Mrs Christine Andrews Teacher/Librarian

Do not forget that if your child is in the musical they need to bring me a USB drive so that I can save the songs

on it for you to rehearse at home with.

Mrs Hutton would love to hear from you if you can assist with anything for the musical. Thank you to those

parents that have already seen me. I will leave a form on my door for you to leave your name, your number

and your email address.

Just a reminder too that all children in the musical must be at rehearsal Thursday mornings from 7.15am. It is

approaching very quickly. Please contact Mrs Hutton if your child is ill or involved in another representative

activity that day.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Equipping girls for the future! Developing self-esteem and identity doesn’t happen in a day, it takes time and the ability to see our strengths and learn about ourselves as individuals. Over the next Term two small groups of students will do the program called “Esteem Designz”.This is a program designed to take young ladies through a journey of self-exploration and empowerment. It is based on fun, interactive and meaningful design projects and activities. These activities engage, equip and empower gir ls to discover their unique character istics, finding value and respect for who they are, providing subtle tools for life and achieving goals that boost self-confidence and worth. Each girl received their own kit which had a journal, craft resources, encouragement and life cards which have ‘mottos’ to encourage and help the girls reflect on their own goals in life, and there is an instruction booklet to support each craft activity. The program helps each girl discover their unique characteristics and explore their identity, giving them the strength to face whatever comes their way. We learn that although in life we are faced with difficulties, depending on how we choose to respond these trials can make us stronger and overcoming difficulties is not impossible! Helping children learn positive friendship skills Parents, carers and school staff help children learn positive special skills by guiding them as young children, being positive examples for children to follow and providing opportunities for play where children can practise their skills. Key social skills that help with friendships include co-operation, communication, empathy, emotional control and responsibility. All children go through friendship conflicts. Even usually popular children experience rejection sometimes. When this happens children’s confidence may be affected. They may blame themselves or others. Beliefs about the reasons for the friendship conflicts they experience effect the ways that children react. It is very beneficial for children when a parent, carer or school staff member helps them solve friendship conflicts by encouraging resilient, co-operative attitudes. Rather than simply blaming the other children the adult may say something like “What else can you do?” “Are there other children who might be interested in playing a game?”. Core friendship skills for children Co-operation How to share, how to take turns, how to work together towards a common goal. Communication Using words to explain what you want and listening to others respectfully. Paying attention to body language eg, making eye contact, smiling, being able to read others nonverbal reactions). Understanding and Managing Feelings Being able to express feelings in ways that make people understand you. Recognising and responding to others’ feelings. Accepting and including others Recognising others needs for respect and friendship.
