Dear Parents and Students

We are delighted to have this opportunity to welcome you to the wonderful world of Perth College Music. The Performing Arts department provides a positive experience for all through the impact of music. Our Pre-K to Year 12 program is creative, challenging and enjoyable, nurturing a life-long musical appreciation. We encourage personal development and the pursuit of excellence within a spiritual and caring community.

Students studying Music at Perth College benefit from 10 purpose-built practice rooms, each with an upright piano, two well-equipped classrooms, a large rehearsal studio (Dorothea Angus Studio - DAS) with full orchestral percussion, a 700-seat theatre (Judith Cottier Theatre), four grand pianos, a harpsichord, three harps and a pipe organ. There are currently more than 20 peripatetic instrumental tutors who provide individual lessons on more than 20 different instruments. All Music students in the Senior School have Sibelius 7 installed on their PLD(personal learning device).

All students at Perth College from Pre-Kindergarten through to Year 7 study Music in the classroom. The department also has a flourishing academic program from Years 8 to 12 when the study of classroom Music becomes an option.

Perth College offers a wide range of co-curricular ensembles. This year, we are proud to continue our 11 - year relationship with Aquinas College. Students will have the opportunity to participate in choirs, string orchestras, concert bands, jazz bands and chamber groups. In the Junior School all students sing in a choir and perform in an annual musical. Bands and orchestras are offered to students from Year 2 to Year 6. In this booklet, you will find a full list of ensembles offered to students at Perth College.

All students from Year 3 to Year 5 learn a string or band instrument in pairs. String lessons are also offered to Year 2 students, Year 6 students have the option to continue learning their instrument. These lessons are covered by the School. Individual lessons sought by Junior School students are also offered and are charged in addition to school fees. Please see the following pages for more information on Junior School Music.

Music encourages greater self-discipline, self-esteem, teamwork, communication skills and spatial awareness, but, best of all, it is great fun! We warmly invite students to become a valued part of music-making at Perth College and look forward to overseeing their musical development.

Junior School Music Program

Students in Junior School Years 2 to 6 are offered instrumental lessons as part of the Junior School Music Program.

Year 2

Year 2 students may choose to learn a string instrument. Violin, viola or cello are offered, with 30 - minute paired lessons and free instrument hire. On acceptance of a place in the Year 2 String program, students are required to attend weekly rehearsals of the Year 2 String Ensemble. This group will rehearse from 3.15 pm to 4.00 pm each Wednesday.

Years 3 to 5

All students from Years 3 - 5 are expected to learn an instrument. They will receive one 30 - minute paired lesson each week on either a band or a string instrument. Lessons and String and Band Ensemble are held each week and timetabled into the school day.

Year 6

Students in Year 6 may choose to continue learning their instrument as part of the Junior School Music Program. These lessons are offered as individual lessons and are timetabled throughout the school day. A condition of receiving these lessons is that students will paritcipate in either Sinfonietta or Junior School Band, both rehearsing 7.30 am to 8.20 am each Friday.

Students who have previously changed instruments in Years 4 or 5 have opted out of the Music Program and are therefore not eligible for the individual lessons offered in Year 6. They may continue their lessons as private students and the current lesson fee will apply.

Examinations – AMEB, ABRSM, Trinity or Guild

Private music students at Perth College are encouraged to sit AMEB, ABRSM, Trinity College or Guild practical examinations. This can be arranged through their instrumental/vocal tutor. Fees for accompanists for both exams and eisteddfods are settled privately between parent and accompanist.

Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 sitting AMEB exams are eligible to earn points towards receiving their graduation certificate (known as the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)). For further details, please contact the Performing Arts department.

General Information

All performances and other musical activities, such as camps, are events that are especially designed to enhance the music education of students. It is expected these events are noted into diaries and attended by students. Award presentations, special dinners and birthday celebrations are not regarded as reasonable excuses for not attending a performance. We hope you will encourage their participation within the Perth College Music community.

• Any student hiring a Perth College instrument is required to use that instrument in one of the School music ensembles or as directed by the Director of Performing Arts.
