The Good News of Victory! Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the LORD God has taken control of us! The LORD has chosen and sent us to tell the oppressed the good news, to heal the brokenhearted, and to announce freedom for prisoners and captives. On a Friday night at 7:00 pm, you can find Doug and I and many others worshiping, hearing a message or testimony on how to get free from life struggles and spending time in a small group talking about what is going on in our lives. Last summer, Doug was driving down East Sullivan Street in downtown Kingsport and saw a vacant build- ing. He found the name and number of the owner. It was not on the market to be sold or rented. Pastor Will Shewey had started his new Shades of Grace Congregation and was looking for property downtown. A year before Doug and Will talked about how they both had a dream of a place where everybody who walked in the doors would feel loved and accepted for where they were in their life. October 2014, a lease was signed and Get Real and Shades of Grace started living out their dreams. Get Real is for everybody. Struggles that people come in with are: alcohol abuse, anger, codependency, control issues, cutting, depression, drugs, eating disorders, enabling, faith doubts, fear/anxiety/stress, gambling, grief/loss, guilt, insecurity, mental illness, overeating, overspending, pornography, PTSD, relationship addiction, self destruction, shame, smoking, unforgiveness, and on and on. We have countless stories of people's lives being transformed. This past Friday night, we heard an amazing testimony from a lady who for most of her life struggled with feelings of worthlessness, depression and anxiety. She spent years with an addiction to cutting. Doug and I had met her a few months before. She was in a relationship with a man who was an addict and she was hoping our ministry could help him. They both started coming to Get Real. She found out that Get Real was not only about those who had addictions but many come wanting help with many other life issues. She shared how finding a place to be open and honest with others who struggled in life helped both of them find healing. It was a special night. Her boyfriend went up to hug her after she finished giving her testimony and proposed to her. I remember when I was asked to give my testimony. I thought how could I ever get up in front of others and talk about my life. I started physically writing out my story and it ended up being 20 pages long. The process of writing it out was healing. Sharing it pub- licly gave me freedom. I was encouraged by others of how my testimony was similar to their life story. We believe God wants us to share our life stories. The greatest testimony is in telling others this is where I was but this is what God has done in my life. He has restored me and transformed me. We pray that on a Friday night at 313 E. The Good News of Victory!

Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the LORD God has taken control of us! The LORD has chosen and sent us to tell the oppressed the good news, to heal the brokenhearted, and to announce freedom for prisoners and captives.

On a Friday night at 7:00 pm, you can find Doug and I and many others worshiping, hearing a message or testimony on how to get free from life struggles and spending time in a small group talking about what is going

on in our lives.

Last summer, Doug was driving down East Sullivan Street in downtown Kingsport and saw a vacant build-ing. He found the name and number of the owner. It was not on the market to be sold or rented. Pastor Will Shewey had started his new Shades of Grace Congregation and was looking for property downtown. A year before Doug and Will talked about how they both had a dream of a place where everybody who walked in the doors would feel loved and accepted for where they were in their life. written by Thomas Edward Frank (available through Cokesbury but not required for this class) and other resources. Ever

wonder why we do things the way we do? This Polity class will do just that. A deeper look at who and what we are. Clas-

Broad Street UMC, 100 E. Church Circle, Kingsport, Tn. 37660.

Local Church Lay Servant/Lay Speaker Training Course (formerly called Basic Course): The local church lay servant/speaker training course prepares one to serve the local church in which membership is held through ministries of leading, caring, communicating and lay speaking. This

training will be taught by Pat Tipton, Director of Youth Ministries at Rogersville UMC and who is also a Certified Lay Minister.

Certified Lay Servant/Lay Speaker Training Courses (formerly called Advanced Courses): The certified lay servant/lay speaker training course prepares one to serve not only within the local church as described above, but also to serve in the district and conference as well as in local

The following two courses will be offered:

1. “Each One a Minister: Using God’s Gifts for Ministry (formerly called” Discovering your Spiritual Gifts”). In this course,

you will study the key New Testament concepts of church, ministry, and gifts based on the letter to the Ephesians and the application of the gifts to

ministry in our church and community. This course will be led by Pastor Richard McKee, Director of Kingsport District Academy.

2. “Let the Whole Church Say Amen” is a study on prayer which will use a workbook with the same title as a primary source. The

A Word from Rev. David Graves, D.S.

After being with you now almost six years, you have heard me quote or seen

in writing my purpose statement….winning people to Jesus, seeing people

others do not see, transforming lives and changing the world…especially this

corner of the world. For me, I live on these words which can be found in Matthew

28:18-20 where Jesus gives us the Great Commission. Yet, this purpose is also

grounded in Matthew 25:31-46.

The verses found in Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus tells us what is on the final

exam for our life here on earth. It is the parable of the sheep and the goats. Jesus

will separate the people as the shepherd in the field separates the sheep from the

goats. Those who reach out to the least, the last, the lost, and the lonely will be

deemed righteous and receive eternal life. Those who do not will receive eternal

punishment. Jesus illustrates this in his parable to feeding the hungry, clothing the

naked, giving a drink to the thirsty, and visiting those who are in prison.

Recently, I heard Bishop Bill McAlilly of the Tennessee Conference for the

United Methodist Church, whom I have grown to appreciate and count as a good

friend, share around the thought of Matthew 25 and 28. From his perspective, we as

a church have separated these two texts. We are good at doing for people, but the

two scriptures placed together call us not only to do for people, but live life with

people. There is a huge difference in doing ministry just for people as opposed to

living in ministry with people. Jesus calls us to do both!

To be frank, it breaks my heart when I hear people on Sunday mornings want to cancel church worship services because it is too cold, and they want to af-fect the whole body by calling off morning services. We complain about it is too cold when 21 Christians were recently beheaded because of their faith in Jesus by ISIS forces. Ponder that for a moment. For some like my 85 year old Dad, it is too cold for him to venture out, but as he taught me, the church is not about him, but the Kingdom. When I reflect upon the opportunities we have as a church and the ones that we miss. I am mindful of things that cause my heart to break in many ways: It breaks my heart when I hear people focusing on things that do not lead people to Christ. When our focus becomes upon our complaints, we often miss opportunities to lead people to Christ. In your church do you hear more complaining or testimo-nies about leading people to Christ?

A Word from Rev. David Graves, D.S. contt...

It hurts when churches have ample resources to reach out and help people in their communities that go to bed and wake up hungry each and every day. When you review the budget and how people spend their time is there a good amount of it go-ing to touch the needs of the community? It makes me sad when the Body of Christ sits silently and does not act on the urgen-cy of sharing the Good News when people are living in so many different kinds of hell (i.e. alcoholism, drug addiction, abuse, co-dependency, PTSD, apathy, etc…). Knowing that people could be set free and experience the Kingdom of God now and in eternity should stir our sense of urgency to loudly live out and proclaim The Gospel. When was the last time you lived out and proclaimed the Good News to someone in your community/life? I agonize when the church does not help the story of God meet the story of peo-ple’s life. It is upsetting when we are focused upon me, myself, mine, and our own. An inward focus is a sign that this is happening within the church and its leadership. Fruits of an inward focused church are often spiritual blindness, manipu-lation, control, decline, and death. Are these fruits apparent in the church? However, I am so blessed when I see the faithful in the Kingsport District whom are truly being the Body of Christ to the least, the last, the lost, and the lonely. This is where the testimonies and stories come from about transformed lives. It is where heaven meets earth and new life begins. It is where dry bones be-come and army for the Lord. IT is where we get to do ministry with others instead of to them. When this happens my heart is strangely warmed and I know the Body of Christ is doing a great work.

We have a great opportunity to BE the church (Body of Christ); a beacon of

light; within our communities.
