Pets
The socialising of pups should start before theyleave the litter. The most well adjusted pupswill have been brought up in the home andbeen exposed from a very early stage to all thesights and sounds of family life. Those kept insheds or in quiet areas miss out on this and itis definitely detrimental to their development. They should also have been handled by a va-riety of people while with the dam, includingchildren. The pups which are only ever ex-posed to a single person are often more nerv-ous as adults.
Until they have finished their vaccines, pupscannot go out and about to meet the world, soyou have to bring the world to meet them! There are three kinds of people dogs shouldbe exposed to from a young age; adults, chil-dren and older people. All move and behavevery differently and pups need to learn howthey can act around them. For example, smallchildren, can be very loud and unpredictableand easily knocked over, whereas older peopleare often slow and move with a chair or a stick.
It is never too early to start a pup's training. Ifyou have a secure garden they can have ac-cess to this straight away and this is a greatway to help them become house trained.Start basic commands as soon as you can, most dogs will pick up 'sit' and 'stay' veryquickly. Getting any children in the family tojoin in is a great way to increase their confi-dence in their new pet and helps ensure thedog is used to taking orders from everyone. You must also get pup used to people's chang-ing appearances. We may not appreciate howdifferent we look in sunglasses, with umbrel-las, or wearing big bulky jackets but to pupswe can seem totally different and it is impor-tant for them to realise that we are the sameunderneath!
Although a pup cannot go for walks in publicplaces until a week after their final vaccine, itis good for them to see the world before this.If they are small enough to be carried, do take
them out, they will be fine as long as theydon't go on the floor or meet strange dogs.School gates are an excellent socialising op-portunity, as are busy streets, shopping cen-tres and parks. You should also take them onshort, frequent car journeys to get them usedto travelling and this is an easy way for largerpups to get a good look at the wider world.
It is also important your pup is good with otherdogs. Ideally they won't have left the litteruntil they are eight weeks, as they learn someimportant lessons at that stage from playingwith their litter mates. After this there is no-body better to teach a pup some doggy man-ners than an older, sensible adult dog and theycan be introduced to known, healthy and fullyvaccinated individuals, in a home environmentany time from a week after their first vaccine. However, if they are too tolerant of exuberantbehaviour the pup may never learn goodboundaries and get into trouble if they act thesame way around strange dogs when they areolder.
The first few weeks of a dog's life are by farthe most important when it comes to their so-cial development and omissions or mistakesmade at this age can stay with them for life. The biggest cause of death in young dogs iseuthanasia for behavioural issues and in mostcases they can be traced back to puppyhood. However, with a little effort and a lot of enthu-siasm the vast majority of dog owners get itright and go on to have a fabulous and mutu-ally rewarding relationship with their pet.
Cat is the resident vet for the social network-ing site for pet lovers; www.petstreet.co.ukIf you have any questions about this or anyother pet related problems, you should contactyour vet.
Buying a new puppy and bringing them home is an excitingtime but it is also a daunting one; you now have a newmember of your family and it is your responsibility to bringthem up properly and introduce them to the world. The training and socialising a pup receives in it's earlyweeks will have a massive impact on how they behave andcope throughout their entire lives, so how do you ensurethat your dog grows up to be a good 'canine citizen'?

THE VILLAGER MAGAZINES 4TH ANNIVERSARY
Thriller Live Competition WinnersTwo lucky winners have won 4tickets each to see Thriller Live atthe Grand Theatre on Sept 27thMr Cooper, of Winford Avenue,Kingswinford and Mrs Davies ofEnville Road, Kinver were drawnfrom the hundreds of entries forone of the most popular competi-tions published. Well done, havea wonderful time.
I had to admit that the pots did look quiteattractive and were great at masking theleylandii hedge, but would I get any beansto set. As is often the case, the early flow-ers dropped off without setting any beans.Bumble bees are able to bite through thebase of the flowers to get at the nectar, butby so doing the flowers fail to get pollinated.
I continued to water the pots which by nowwere drying out quite frequently, and addedsome Phostrogen every third or fourth wa-tering. After another week or so, smallbeans were seen to be forming and thesebegan to develop quite rapidly. By early Au-gust, we picked enough for our first meal ofhome grown runner beans. We hadachieved our goal, but then the beans juston kept coming. In fact they were develop-ing faster than we could eat them, so theidea of freezing some became a real possi-bility. My wife did refrain from saying 'I toldyou so' but my earlier scepticism was quiteunfounded. You can grow runner beansquite successfully in large pots, and theyeven looked colourful as well, so I didn't re-ally miss the summer geraniums. Next year,I might just try one of the multi-colouredred, pink and white flowered varieties suchas ‘Painted Lady’, ‘Summer Melody’ or thenew ‘St. George’; that's if I'm not fed upwith eating beans by then!
Homes & Gardens
Although we don’t have a vegetable garden, this summer my wife decided that weshould grow some runner beans. Somefriends had apparently grown some quitesuccessfully in large pots, and we had ac-tually been able to sample some of the re-sults. I must admit that I was just a bitsceptical about growing beans in pots. Inmy experience, a traditional row of beansticks in a proper vegetable garden was thebest idea, but without this facility, there wasonly one way to find out and this was 'try itand see'.
Our garden is not large, being broader thanit is long. At the far end is a fairly tall ley-landii hedge which gives us some privacywithout upsetting our neighbours who arealso happy to keep it for the same reason.I have a pair of large ornamental plasticpots either side of a bench which, whenplanted with summer bedding, help tobreak up the large expanse of conifer andgive some colour in that part of the garden. These pots were selected for our little ex-periment. When the spring wallflowers andtulips had finished flowering, they were re-moved and the compost was well dressedwith fish, blood and bone fertilizer. Fiveseven foot canes were then inserted intoeach pot and tied at the top to form a 'wig-wam'. I waited until early June to plant thebeans when all risk of frost had gone. Witha good watering ion, all we had to do waswait. Would I really get enough beans tomake a decent meal?
For a while growth was rather slow, but to-wards the end of the month, everythingtook off and within a few days, the beanshad reached the top of the canes and werebeginning to explore the neighbouringshrubs. By the middle of July, these sevenfoot pillars were covered in clusters of scar-let flowers. Apparently, runner beans wereoriginally introduced to Britain as ornamen-tal plants. Only later was it discovered thatbeans were good to eat.

ShorehelpersNot all volunteers crew the lifeboat. All lifeboatstations have voluntary shore helpers who helprun the lifeboat station and assist with the launchand recovery of the lifeboat. Some also have im-portant posts as part of a voluntary managementteam. They are all a vital part of the emergencyteam.
FundraisersVolunteer fundraisers are vital to the RNLI. Theiradmiration for the crews and lifeguards help mo-tivate them to support the service.
VolunteersThe RNLI depends on volunteers for everythingfrom crewing the lifeboats to shaking collectionboxes. We are committed to providing the bestsupport to all our volunteers.
RNLI volunteers across the UK and Republic ofIreland are united by a willingness to commit timeand energy to a cause about which they are pas-sionate. It is because so many crew members, shore helpers, fundraisers and others are volun-teers that such a high proportion of funds can bespent on first-class lifeboats and equipment.
The crewLifeboat crew come from all walks of life, but theyhave one thing in common: they selflessly maketime in their own lives to save others. With over 4,800 lifeboat crew members in theUnited Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, of whichover 340 are women, lifeboat crews are dedicatedand make a major commitment – which could ul-timately include risking their life. They respond ata moment's notice, no matter where they are orwhat they are doing when the pager goes off.Crews are regularly called away from their fami-lies, their beds and their work, 24 hours a day,365 days a year. Often they’ll leave a place ofcomfort to brave the cold and wet in situationsthat test their skill, strength and courage. Theirlifesaving work is essential, often difficult andsometimes dangerous.
LifeguardsLike the lifeboat crews, lifeguards save lives indramatic rescues, but much of their vital work isdone by preventing accidents in the first place. The RNLI has lifeguards on more than 140beaches in the UK. There are more than 700 sea-sonal paid lifeguards and supervisors. Volunteerlifeguards provide additional cover on busy week-ends and during holidays. The number of life-guards varies depending on the local need and isdetermined by a risk assessment of the beach andthe predicted visitor numbers during three distinctseasons: full, main and peak.

Kinver Light Operatic Society isputting on 3 nights of entertainmentpacked with 3 plays each night!Thursday 14th October to Saturday16th October 2010 - 7.30pm at EdgecliffHigh School Theatre.
Firstly on the stage is ‘A Last Tango in Little Grim-ley’ written by local, but internationally renowned, playwright David Tristram. Little Grimley AmateurDramatic Society is down to four members whoare struggling to put on a play and attract an au-dience. "There's only one thing that sells ticketsthese days" says Gordon the Chairman. "Sex!"Thus begins the chaotic and hilarious build-up toan evening of extraordinary home-grown drama.Follow their fortunes as they try to stage a daringcomedy followed by a racy pantomime. Could thisbe the end of their society?
Next is an interesting play entitled ‘A creamcracker under the settee’ written by none otherthan Alan Bennett. It begins with Doris, anotherlonely widow receiving visits from Zulema, thehome help, except Doris thinks she’s more of ahome hindrance who won’t let her do housework.I’m the only person who stands between you andStafford House, says Zulema. But independentDoris does some dusting, takes a tumble and endsup on the floor unable to move. While remember-ing her late husband and the child they nearlyhad, she spots a cream cracker under the settee. That will do for evidence against Zulema if shethreatens Doris with Stafford House again!!
Last but not least is a follow on from the first playof the night ‘The fat lady sings in Little Grimley’again by the brilliant David Tristram. Gordon, Mar-garet, Joyce and Bernard are back to tackle yetanother threat to their survival - this time in theshape of a rival am-dram, newly-formed in theirvillage, determined to upstage them with anaward-winning musical. The querulous quartet pull together to devise aningenious military-style plan that doesn't, well, goquite to plan. When their subterfuge is discov-ered by the rival society's psychopathic front-of-house manager, he's none too pleased. Add in afew emotional complications for Gordon, andthings look a little grim for Little Grimley. Couldthis finally be the end of their society?
Don't be so sure. It's never over...until the fatlady sings.

CELEBRATING OUR 35TH ANNIVERSARY
THIS YEAR
