“THE 85”
“THE 85” “No one is joining synagogues anymore!” “Synagogues only care about long-time members!” “There are no children!” “There are no young people!” “Beth El only cares about families!” “We are too Jewish!”
I’ve heard it all, so I’d like to introduce you to our newest members. I know I’m a rabbi, but I’m actually “a numbers guy.” Statistics, polls, I eat them all up. The Talmud says, “Go out and see what the people are doing.” So I decided to go out and see who are people are. Beth El currently is 417 households strong (total) and (of those), over the past five years, 85 new households have joined our congregational family (and stayed. No, sorry, I’m not counting our “first-year-free and leavers”. I forgive you.) Therefore, 20.3% of our total congregation is new. One out of five of us is new. I’ve been known to say to our new members, “Watch out, you may just be president of Beth El in five years!” I wanted to take a closer look at our new 85. 85 new households equals 270 new people and of the new 270, 138 are adults and 132 are children. 132 new children in five years! Not bad. And, what about the adults? How old are they? Do seniors join synagogues? How about Millennials? Out of the 138 new adults: 16 (11%) are from the Silent Generation, that is they are 71 to 87 years old. We have 37 (27%) new Baby Boomers, ages 52-70. 59 new Gen-Xers 36-51 (43%). And 26 new Millennials 19-35 (19%)! So, the answer is, Yes, seniors and Millennials do join synagogues. So do singles. Out of our 85 new households: 32 are singles (38%). Also, of our new 85, two have passed away and five have moved away. (Yes, if you die or move, we are still your family). The “traditional” Jewish family has evolved over time and so has our congregation. Out of our new 85, 20 are intermarried families (24%) and 15 (18%) are conversionary marriages (that is, at least one spouse has converted to Judaism). Therefore, out of our 85 new households: 35 have at least one person who did not grow up Jewish (41%) and 33 (39%) come from a Reform background (there is some overlap). Now, what do all these numbers mean? They mean that we are growing and that we are changing. And that we need to respect that change and change ourselves appropriately. We cannot assume each other’s background. We cannot assume everyone is Conservative or even Jewish. We cannot assume everyone is married. We come from different synagogues and backgrounds. Some of us may not know our service or even Hebrew. We always need to look around, welcome, and help. Some of us are seniors and some are twenty-somethings. Some of us are board members and some come once a year
(but not many). I get a question a lot, “Why do they join? If they’re not Conservative, Why Beth El?” Because of you, all of you. Because Beth El is a community, not a label. It’s about the people, not the rhetoric. It’s because many of us are new. We found a home, made a home, set down roots. And we are creating a home for our children and our children’s children. Our past is amazing. Our future is even more amazing. Because we are bigger than a Movement or a building or even a religion. We are a community, a family. And each and every one is important, priceless, and we thank you for choosing to join us. Happy New Year, Rabbi Alex
Reintroducing you to our

It’s Sunday night, late. I just got home from shul, where I watched The Frisco Kid, at our Adult Education Movie Night. It was just as funny as it was when I enjoyed it for the first time while working at the Squirrel Hill Theater in the late 1970’s. In it, Rabbi Avram, played by the late, great, Gene Wilder, traveled from Poland to America, and across to San Francisco, where he was to deliver a Torah to his new congregation. The movie was free, but snacks were sold by our Kadima and USY kids, as a fundraiser to support our sister congregation in Africa. Before the movie, I stopped by Chipotle, which was giving 50% of its proceeds that evening to Beth El’s Religious School. Not surprisingly, the restaurant was filled with friends enjoying their dinners knowing that by doing so they were helping our school. Earlier today many in our community attended religious school, or spent an hour learning history with Rabbi Alex, or took part in Sisterhood’s continuing charity knitting project, or watched the Steelers while filling boxes of Beth El Men’s Club’s “Build a Pair” project, which teaches kids throughout the world the mitzvah of laying tefillin. Sounds like a busy day? It was a busy weekend at Beth El! Earlier, on Saturday, our community enjoyed services followed by a Lunch ‘n Learn led by Rabbi Alex. The food was delicious and the conversation and learning was fulfilling. It was a pretty good crowd for a Saturday, but it was nothing compared to Friday night when over 170 people attended our musical service and pre-Hanukkah bash. The service, led by Rabbi Amy and Cantoral Soloist Sarah Stock Mayo, was rollicking, with kids dancing in the aisles and on the Bima. Happy faces were everywhere both during the service and while eating tasty latkes and other treats for dinner. A busy weekend is standard fare at Beth El. Just a few weeks ago we celebrated Torah Weekend with a visit from Gershom Sizomu, Rabbi and leader of the Abayudaya community in Uganda. I hope that you had the opportunity to meet, listen to, and be inspired by Rabbi Gershom as he spoke Friday night at Temple Emanuel, Saturday morning at Beth El, Saturday night at the JCC and Sunday morning, at our Religious School. Rabbi Gershom taught us that Jews do not all live in the west; are not all white; and do not all have running water or electricity. He showed us the good that one person can accomplish. I do not think that I have ever been as moved as when, on Saturday, Beth El presented Rabbi Gershom with a Torah to take back to his community. The moment became even more special on Sunday morning when our Religious School children joined in this mitzvah when they spoke and sang with Rabbi Gershom, and questioned him about life in his village. It was so beautiful seeing our students kissing the Torah as Rabbi Gershom walked down the aisle in the Sufrin Chapel, carrying the Torah before we packed it for the long journey to its new home. If you’d like, I encourage you to look at the pictures and stories that we’ve posted in the Beth El blog section of our website, particularly those of the celebration receiving the Torah in the town of Mbale, Uganda. The Torah fulfills a spiritual need, and there is another need that we can help fill as well. Rabbi Gershom informed us that Uganda is currently experiencing a drought, which will lead to famine later in 2017. The Jews of Uganda are subsistence farmers. How we can best help them is to provide money to purchase and store food, before supplies dwindle and prices rise. This will help insure that Rabbi Gershom’s community, both Jews and Gentiles, like the people saved by Joseph in Egypt, can be nourished when the famine hits. That morning before he left for the airport, several of our members ran to ATM’s to send some needed money with Rabbi Sizomu, and one of our students even contributed his allowance! What a mitzvah! Would you like to help too? Please make a contribution to Beth El, noting that it is for the Abayudaya community, and we will make sure that 100% of your gift reaches them. You can also send contributions through Bechol Lashon, www.bechollashon.org, an organization that assists small Jewish communities in far off places. Again, make sure to direct your contribution to the Abayudaya. Every gift, both large and small will help our brothers and sisters! 2016 is coming to a close. I have enjoyed these past few months as your President and I look forward to the challenges and rewards of our upcoming Centennial year in 2017. Until then, I wish you a Happy Hanukkah; a Merry Christmas to our non-Jewish members; and a Happy New Year!

SPIEGEL RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Each time they come into the classroom, the fabulous Ilanot Class is energetic and eager to learn. We engage in Torah study together by learning the weekly parshyot and discussing their many lessons. We recently connected the mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim, “Inviting Guests” to the parasha Va-Yera. We learned that Abraham's tent had four doors as he loved to have guests visit him. The children shared their own ways of being welcome to guests, such inviting a new student to join them at lunch. How did our ancient ancestors know what day it was, when a new month began, when Shabbat began? We explore the answers to these questions as we learn the rhythms of Jewish time. Our oversized Jewish calendar helps us to do this as well as our moon-phase stickers as we connect each parasha and various holidays to a phase of the moon. Each month we connect the first sliver of the moon after not seeing it at all to the new Hebrew month: Rosh Chodesh. Our discussions of the moon connect us to our ancestors, our Jewish community, and to God. The children were so wonderful on the bima for Inclusion Shabbat as they used both their voices and their hands to connect to the beautiful song “Oseh Shalom”.

MEN’S CLUB
January / February 2017 Tevet, Shevat, Adar 5777
Engaging Jewish men in Jewish life is the mission of the Beth El Men's Club, and it's something we strive for
in all that we do. My personal twist to this statement is and we have fun while doing it.
One recent example of this is when about seven of us gathered to help assemble Build A Pair kits. Build A
Pair is the Men's Club initiative to help educate Jewish children around the country the meaning and customs of
tefillin. To do this, Hebrew schools order from us kits that contain all the necessary supplies for children to make
their own tefillin and for teachers to educate them. Putting these kits together is not easy, requiring meticulous
attention to detail of what goes in, how much of each supply, and even how they're packaged. Working together,
we were able to assemble a large number of kits while watching the Steelers beat the Bills and chomping down
pizza. We each had a good time and walked away feeling good knowing that through our efforts kids are going
to learn this ancient tradition. This event and our upcoming Mitzvah Day at SHIM on 12/23 exemplifies the
Men's Club. Doing great work and having fun while doing it.
Please consider joining and participating in the Men's Club. You'll feel great for helping our community and
you'll have a great time, I promise. And again, if there's not anything on the calendar that suits you, let me know
your ideas.
Thanks!

VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH
Happy 2017! To begin the calendar year in a celebratory fashion, we are kicking off a new program to recognize our wonderful Beth El volunteers. We all know that many of the services (both religious and in a more general sense), events and programs would not happen, if not for the dedication of our community of volunteers. We have so many volunteers whom we hope to recognize over time. The Volunteer of the Month has demonstrated commitment to Beth El by volunteering in a meaningful way, by representing Beth El in a positive manner and by embracing our sense of community. Please join us in wishing a hearty Yasher Koach to our Volunteers of the Month for January and February!
Susie Seletz and Nina Kaplan
January / February 2017 Tevet, Shevat, Adar 5777
The Beth El Volunteer of the Month for January, who is from Washington, PA enjoys being a worker bee and working with her Beth El friends. She lived in various places while growing up, from Florida to Massachusetts, to New York state and Michigan. This Beth El member’s parents had the most influence on her because they gave her a firm grounding and she said that they set a great example of involvement in the Jewish community.
This person has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Robert Morris University. Following one role in the business world, she has held several positions in Jewish organizations, including Young Judaea, South Hills JCC and here at Beth El. Her proudest accomplishment is her children. She met her husband by having been fixed up by a woman who knew both her mother and (future) mother-in-law. They had one date, which preceded a summer apart. Our volunteer spent hers in Israel on a dig and visiting family. She reconnected with her husband-to-be upon her return and they became engaged,
one year to the day after their first date, and married 6 months later. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her Beth El friends, reading and knitting. She is passionate about knitting and always has several projects going. This knitter usually has at least one knitting project with her everywhere she goes. She has also been practicing yoga for a number of years, and attends the Torah Yoga classes at Beth El. She also enjoys taking advantage of the many cultural experiences that Pittsburgh has to offer, often in the company of Beth El friends, and welcomes the opportunity to try new places emerging on the local restaurant scene. The most interesting place she has visited is Israel, but she also looks forward to going to Niagara-on-the-Lake with friends every summer. Her volunteer experience at Beth El includes: Bingo, Pancake Festival, Purim boxes, Purim carnival and the Steeler raffle. She also participates in Shabbat services by leading the Torah service and serving as gabbai. You can usually find her sitting at the front door for most Beth El events. As stated by a fellow member, “When you think that she works in the office all day Tuesday and again shows up Wednesday morning, after having spent at least 6 hours every Tuesday night as a volunteer, I suggest that she is a worthy recipient of Beth El’s Volunteer Recognition.” The January Volunteer of the Month, Debbie Goldberg, says that there is nothing surprising about her; her life is an open book. Words cannot express how grateful the congregation is to you for all you do for each of us every day of the year. Mazel tov, Debbie, the January, 2017 Beth El Volunteer of the Month.
February’s volunteer of the month used to be a public accountant, then a financial analyst and intranet developer for Mellon Financial Corporation, and now develops puzzles for a living. This person has worked on books for National Geographic for Kids, Brain Games for Kids (and adults), and numerous other books and puzzles for the education market and private companies. This volunteer’s most recent book to hit the shelves is Mastermind. This Beth El member grew up in Wilkins Township, and has a B.S. in Accounting with a minor in International Relations from Lehigh University. February 2017’s volunteer of the month received an M.B.A., with a dual major in Finance and Marketing, from Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh. She loves to bake, but baking becomes a ‘liability’ when there’s no one around (except her) to eat what she baked. This volunteer also loves gardening, but does not enjoy battling the deer, ground hogs, rabbits and chipmunks that steal the vegetables and fruits and destroy her plants. This person loves writing too (sci-fi/fantasy), especially when the characters ‘take over’ the writing and the storyline develops in ways she did not plan! In her spare time she also enters sweepstakes, reads and walks. She loves to travel and at the age of 15 she was an exchange student to The Netherlands. This person loved traveling through Europe via u-rail after college and has also visited Israel and Japan. The accomplishment that she is most proud of is her family. She said that even though they are not perfect, they enjoy being with one another (most of the time!) and they all support one another. Her parents, husband and kids have had the most influence on her. Her parents gave her the foundation for how to treat others and approach life and continue to be there for her anytime she needs advice, an opinion, a hand, or simply a sounding board. Her husband is her best friend; has always loved and supported anything she chose to do, and is a great one to go to for advice, or to just be there to talk to. She said that over the years, many of their beliefs and ‘likes’ have converged and met in the middle. This mother said that she has learned a lot from her kids too; they each have different personalities and different needs and provide unique insights into the world around them. She has always enjoyed taking her kids to Mitzvah Day events or other Pantry/Feed the Hungry events throughout the community over the years. Those trips are the dearest to her, as she had the chance to help the kids learn about how to help and respect others, and remind them to be thankful for what they themselves have in their lives. This member of our synagogue believes that volunteering should be a part of your life, long term, and not just something you do once or twice in your life. This individual said that it’s not always easy to volunteer on a regular basis when you’re busy with family and work. Therefore, it’s important to find
volunteer work that you enjoy doing and has meaning not only to a person, group or the community as a whole, but to yourself as well. Her volunteer experience at Beth El includes working on the website for the past year and a half. She has used her experience to help with the planning and development of Beth El’s newest site. Currently she oversees various functions on the website and is part of Beth El’s Communications Committee, in support of Beth El’s goals for present and future members. She enjoys working with everyone at the shul and hopes that what they are doing with the website will help draw our members and community closer together. Beth El is thankful for her volunteer efforts and is pleased to announce that Julie Cohen is our Volunteer of the Month for February. Please congratulate Julie when you see her.

INCLUSION COMMITTEE December 3, 2016 was the 8th consecutive Inclusion Shabbat at Beth El. Each year I say "this was the best" and again I am saying that. In fact, while I'm already thinking ahead to next year, it's bittersweet because of how wonderful the service was this year. For those who were not present, here are a few of the features that you missed: our religious school students signing prayers throughout the service and at one point teaching the Congregation the Shema. Yasher Koach, kids! A post Bar Mitzvah student, Martin, being fully included in the Service with his "Team" supporting him doing an aliyah, reciting the Ha Motzi and more. It was all joyous! Special English readings and prayers that speak to the topic of special needs. Rosalie reading her Blog about her own challenges and treatments as the mom of a son with mental health diagnoses. And last (but certainly not least) Rep. Dan Miller, our guest speaker, who spoke passionately and forcefully about his own challenges raising a son with special needs and the work he is doing in the state legislature to make life better for one and all throughout PA. And Dan's 4th Disability and Mental Health Summit at Beth El is coming up in March. He is a man greatly admired and we all appreciated his participation in Beth El's Inclusion Shabbat. So, a question I am posing to you, our congregants. If you, or a family member, has a diagnosed, or not yet diagnosed (or possibly never will be) mental health issue, what might you expect or wish for from our Congregation? Here are some possibilities (and you may have some of your own): 1) Pastoral (ie. rabbinic) counseling
2) Better education for our staff and congregation members about mental health issues 3) Support group meetings at Beth El facilitated by an experienced professional
4) Other Perhaps none of the above is relevant to you and of course we understand that. If you wish, you can, in full confidence, email me with your feedback. For those who might not know me, I am a retired clinical social worker. I believe it is time we address the needs of those in our Beth El family who have mental health issues in their lives and could benefit by services such as the above. I await responses from those who feel comfortable doing so. Joan Charlson

Yasher Koach!
January / February 2017 Tevet, Shevat, Adar 5777
As we prepare for the Jan. / Feb. Kol to be printed, shivering, I am reminded of the warmth that makes Beth El who we are…..the volunteers and staff who together help to keep everything running smoothly. Half the reason we are able to keep the Kol in house is because of the volunteers who help all along the way. Last month’s collators were; Rhondda Averbach, Karen Frank, Sally Herrup, Norman Kerman, Rena Shapiro, Lin Toder and Ellen Whitman. Betsy Rascoe continues to sell and coordinate advertising, and Julie Cohen makes sure all is listed on our Website calendar. We are also publishing the KOL on our website for your convenience as well, thanks to Beth Pomerantz and Julie Cohen. Yasher K to all of our KOL helpers.
As part of our November programming this year, we moved up on the calendar our collaboration with Temple Emanuel, the South Hills JCC and South Hills Jewish Pgh. for Torah Weekend. And what a Torah Weekend it was. Because of the initiative of Francine Rosenthal, we were able to take advantage of Rabbi Gershom Sizomu who happened to be touring in the States. Rabbi Sizomu is not only the Rabbi of the Ubayudaya Jewish Community but is also part of the Ugandan Parliament. His sessions Friday night at Temple, Saturday morning at Beth El, Saturday evening at the JCC and then again with our Religious school students Sunday morning were extremely informative and mesmerizing. We learned about their Jewish community of approximately 500, the extremely difficult living standards which currently exist plus they are mostly farmers and there is a drought which affects their ability to produce and sell. Beth El provided a much needed Torah for the community which accompanied the Rabbi on his trip back to Uganda. Special thanks to our Men’s Club who sponsored Torah Weekend on behalf of Beth El. Yasher K to all!
On November 12th at Shabbat morning services, we were treated to a presentation by author and
radio host, Michael Krasny. Michael is the author of “Let There Be Laughter,” and shared with us some of his many stories and Jewish jokes from his vast collection through the years. It truly was a very entertaining experience. Thank you to Michael and Sheryl Silverman for making this program available to us. Michael is the uncle of Sheryl Silverman. Have you heard the one about…………..
On November 30th, the Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh in conjunction with South Hills Jewish
Pittsburgh held a South Hills Town Hall Meeting at the JCC. Jeff Finkelstein, President and CEO of JFed and Cindy Shapira, Board President addressed the full room about the relationship of the Federation with the South Hills, the Federation’s future plans and announced that we are embarking on a Jewish Community Survey which hadn’t been done since 2002. We are hoping to learn about the changes in demographics as well as preferences in reference to connectivity and what people are seeking programmatically. An organization connected to Brandeis was hired to conduct the survey and evaluate its results.
WE WISH OUR BETH EL FAMILIES AND EXTENDED COMMUNITY
A VERY HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR!

Big Payouts! Smaller Crowds! Better Chances of Winning! B-I-N-G-O!
WE NEVER CUT PRIZES! Beth El Bingo has finished with its best year ever in 2016, which would not have been possible without the commitment from its dedicated volunteers. A special thanks goes out to Bingo Chairs Fern Schwartz and Jay Feuer and
Vice-Chairs Deb Goldberg, Andy Gross, and Warren Sufrin.
Beth El Bingo has had a phenomenal run over the last several months because of the Queen of Hearts game. The players pick one card a week and the game continues until a player picks the Queen of Hearts. As of the writing of this article, after approximately 45 weeks, the Queen of Hearts has not been picked and the pot has increased to over $16,000.00. This is bringing in players in droves. We used to average about 80-90 players a week and we are now averaging over 150 players a week. These players are spending so much money and we are able to deposit about $5,000.00 a night.
We have been praying for additional workers and are prayers have been answered based upon the hard work of Susie Seletz and Gerry Bass. Over the past few months, we have been able to secure additional workers for each Bingo team. This allows us to better service the large amount of players who are attending.
The Queen of Hearts game is not going to last forever and we believe many of the new players will continue to come after someone finally wins the Queen of Hearts game. We will also start a new Queen of Hearts game after the current one is over.
Over the past two months, Bingo has had some other great giveaways. On November 16, 2016, Bingo gave away twenty (20) turkeys for Thanksgiving. This special project was chaired by one of our regular callers, Gerry Bass and assisted by Carol Bass.
On December 13, 2016, we gave away a 4-5 Night Caribbean Cruise for two on Royal Caribbean as our End of the Year Grand Finale Raffle Ticket Drawing Prize. We also gave away cash for the winners to use on their trip. Special thanks go out to Andrew Gross and to Malori Asman for helping us secure a certificate for the cruise.
We are working hard to continue our success so it you want to be a part of the most successful Beth El Bingo ever, then please contact Fern Schwartz, Jay Feuer, Warren Sufrin, Andy Gross, or Deb Goldberg. Please also use the attached coupon and pass it out to new bingo players, telling them about the value of playing at our non-smoking bingo. WARNING: This e-mail is a suspected cam.

Financial aid for 2017-2018 is available from the Central Scholarship and Loan Referral Service (CSLRS) of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. This program is administered by Jewish Family & Children's Service. The funds are made available through the generosity of families who have established endowments through the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, Jewish Community Center, National Council of Jewish Women, Jewish Women International of Pittsburgh (formerly B'nai B'rith Women), Jewish Home for Babies and Children, The Pittsburgh Foundation, and Rodef Shalom Congregation.
Scholarships are distributed on the basis of demonstrated financial need. Some funding sources also require high academic achievement. In addition, the applicant must be Jewish, reside in Allegheny, Westmoreland, Beaver, Butler or Washington County for at least two years, and need financial assistance to attend an accredited institution of higher education as either an undergraduate or graduate student. For school year 2017-2018 Central Scholarship will again be using an on-line application process. The on-line applications is available at http://www.centralscholarship.org. For more information call JF&CS at (412) 422-5627, email [email protected] or write to: Central Scholarship & Loan Referral Service, 5743 Bartlett St., Pittsburgh, PA 154217. First-time applicants must be interviewed. All applications should be submitted as early as possible to ensure processing.
The deadline for 2017-2018 applications is February 9, 2017.
