This month we look at some new kitchen and bathroom products, focusing on developments in digital technology and touch on changing regulations, standards and guidelines.

John Pudney’s classic book The Smallest Room, a humourous romp through the history of the WC, now needs not only a postscript, but also a new title. WCs, along with bathrooms and kitchens, are becoming larger and more sophisticated.
Going digitalDevelopments in digital technology are principal drivers. Grohe Ondus Digitecture, winner of the 2010 red Dot ‘best of the best’ design award, is a new system of digital modular elements that allows users to decide their preferred water temperature and pressure, and then programme it using a device that memorises the selection. Features include a pause option that temporarily stops the flow of water and instantly re-starts the supply at the same temperature and flow rate, saving water. The flat Digitecture panel allows all plumbing and fittings to be concealed in walls and the range includes hand showers, extra-large ceiling showers and body sprays. Digital controllers are available for all draw-offs, along with integrated accessories and digital WC actuation, which harmonise with the rectangular glass tiles.
Something in the waterEven for the less environmentally-conscious, there’s something not quite right about buying plastic mineral water bottles in bulk. Grohe blue’s filtered water system provides high quality water straight from the tap, eliminating the need to buy bottled water. It has a carbon filter, which removes hard metals such as lead and copper, improving taste and smell, even in hard-water areas. Taps contain two waterways, producing unfiltered mixed hot and cold water as well as filtered water. Cartridges last up to six months, filtering 600 litres of water and lED displays blink repeatedly when a cartridge is below 10 per cent of its capacity to remind you to order a new one. It’s also less of a schlep than mineral water bottles, although the recommended retail price is £2,160 before vAT.
Australian instant boiling water system manufacturer Zip has extended its HydroTaps range to cater for commercial applications and provide a wider choice of tap finishes, including gold plated, brushed chrome and black chrome. HydroTaps provide instant boiling and chilled filtered water and can suit different needs. The new HydroTap All-In-
One model is designed for smaller kitchens and the HydroTap Plus range is suitable for high-demand installations. The hard-wearing Industrial HydroTap is suitable for heavy-duty applications and the vandal-resistant Institutional HydroTap is a good choice for specialised environments such as prisons.
The All-In-One is now available with vented taps, designed for single-mains cold water supplies and blending it with stored boiling water to deliver hot water for sink use. Alternatively, the non-vented tap option is designed for connection to mains cold water supplies as well as local hot water systems. Energy-saving features of the All-In-One include a low light sleep mode, which monitors local lighting levels to activate sleep mode automatically, allowing the temperature of stored boiling water to gradually reduce to 65°C. The boiling cycle resumes on further draw-off or when local lights are switched on.

bathroom fittings which are available from Japanese manufacturer TOTO, including the Washlet WC. German manufacturer Duravit has now entered this arena, in collaboration with French designer Philippe Starck, and is providing WCs with heated seats and user-cleansing functions. It describes its new SensoWash Starck shower-toilet as ‘a sophisticated symbiosis of toilet and bidet’. For those with Howard Hughes complexes, a silver-coloured remote control, with flush keys can be used to open the toilet lid and seat, is ideal. The electrically-operated unit opens and closes automatically at the push of a button.
The impossible dreamDesigners pursuing the logically impossible minimalist kitchen should look at Marsh:Grochowski Architects’ ‘no fridge, no oven’ Marsh House (AJ 10.03.10). Or they might be be interested in AbK Innovent’s Neerim range of fully-recessed ceiling extractors, which are designed to create fresher, cleaner environments in open-plan kitchen/dining settings. All workings are concealed above the ceiling and perimeter panel extraction for these units can either be flush-mounted, with a minimum height of 200mm, or built into a suspended ceiling feature. low noise internal/external motors provide effective extraction. various standard sizes are available, along with bespoke models. Neerim’s integrated wall cupboards also provide effective extraction behind kitchen cupboard doors.
Staying on the right side of the lawI will only mention the revisions to Part l of the regs in passing. Needless to say, energy saving is high on most clients’ and architects’ agendas and it’s also a priority to minimise water consumption. This involves using presence sensors to prevent urinals from flushing unnecessarily or even specifying non-flush toilets (you can get brEEAM points for this). recycled grey water can be used to reduce water consumption. Approved Document G (Sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency), published in March 2010 (AJ 18.02.10) is an essential reference, along with the Code for Sustainable Homes. You also need to keep up to date with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act and Part M of the building regulations (Access to and use of buildings). ■

This complete refurbishment of a semi-detached family house in West Hampstead involved opening up the existing ground floor and linking a new basement level space with open voids and staircases to create light and open-plan family living areas. The remaining two storeys were fully refurbished and designed to maximise the use of existing spaces and introduce new, modern bathrooms.
Many existing and traditional details have been used in the new scheme to reflect the building’s history. The gardens have been landscaped to compliment the rear facade.
The new full-height sliding doors to the rear elevation utilise a flush-glazed laminated timber window system with enhanced U-values, achieved by the integration of insulation and fibre-reinforced composites into the laminated timber construction.

The project, in the City of London, transforms two office buildings into a residential complex with a central courtyard and retail and restaurant space at ground and basement levels. It takes its name, ‘The Writers’, from the nearby market.
The majority of the apartments – a mixture of studio, one and two bed units – are dual aspect to maximise the amount of daylight into each unit. They incorporate prefabricated kitchen and bathroom pods and have a high performing thermal envelope. Access to each unit is from the corridor adjacent to the central core, with sleeping spaces at courtyard level and living spaces on the street elevations. The flats are privately rented and are available medium or long term. The units have achieved an occupancy rate of over 90 per cent.

The Apprentice Store was an ancillary building to the adjacent DeMontalt Mill, having been added to over 200 years and evolving into four joined buildings. It was on the English Heritage Buildings at Risk register and gradually slipping down the valley due to the unstable geology beneath.
We aimed to be true to the evolving history of the site, by restoring the historical and inserting an obvious new layer of contemporary occupancy. A pared-down palette of simple, robust materials complements the original fabric and industrial heritage of the building.
The design sought to knit together the four adjoined buildings with a ribbon-like circulation route, which undulates around the dominant central Bath stone wall. The circulation conveys a sense that you are moving through the different buildings, establishing a series of visual connections across them. The house is entered from the north courtyard into a stone double-height space, crossed by a bridge at first floor level. Through a tight slot in the main spine wall, stepping onto the raised circulation ribbon, you enter an amply daylit open plan living space with a view of the valley dropping away below you.
The private bedroom and bathroom spaces are arranged across two floors on the north side, divided by the double-height entrance hall, bridged by the ribbon. The new roof structure of the lean-to connects at high level to the Bath stone spine wall. At the junction between the lean-to and wall a continuous rooflight draws sunlight down the wall.

Kinloch Stainless Steel Waterless Urinal
Kinloch is the stainless steel trough version of Aridian. Using the same waterless technology, its stainless steel finish is particularly suited to siuations calling for extra durability. According to manufacturer Armitage Shanks, waterless urinals have lower product and installation costs.

Product matrix Water-efficient sanitaryware
In the case of urinals, one option for saving water is flush management systems, and the alternative is waterless urinals. According to water-efficient sanitaryware manufacturer, The Green Building Store, although water is used in conventional urinals to wash the bowl and flush the trap, ‘in practice ceramic urinals repel urine and remain surprisingly fresh without flushing’. Standard British urinals don’t flush the trap in the way that a WC is flushed – they just dilute urine without removing solids such as hair, scale and cigarette ends. So even so-called ‘flushing’ urinals tend to block and in hard-water areas and are prone to tough scale build-up.
Water Regulations-compliant urinals in public toilets open for 10 hours per day use about 27m3 water per year – a strong incentive to specify waterless urinals. They offer a number of other benefits, including reduced water and sewage charges, reduced blockage in hard-water areas, avoidance of odorous lime-scale, lower sewage volumes, frost immunity, less risk of flooding, and lower installation and maintenance costs.
But waterless urinals have potential disadvantages: the cost of supplies such as
cartridges may exceed the cost of the water saved and their environmental cost may outweigh the benefit of reduced water use. Many systems require regular and correct maintenance to prevent odour and blockage, making them uneconomic for smaller installations. As with conventional urinals, some waterless appliances are prone to leakage and splashing, producing odour.
According to The Green Building Store, WCs account for about 30 to 40 per cent of domestic water use. Consumption is higher when new water enters cisterns while flushing, but this can be avoided by delayed action inlet valves (see ES4 WC below), which provide additional water savings of at least 25 per cent.
Most low-flush toilets available in Britain have dual-flush valves. When these become faulty, unless rectified, they leak water continually through the pan. Also, British plumbers are more familiar with siphon flush mechanisms and dual flush users may not know how to avoid double flushing. Water-efficient WCs with siphon flushes, which don’t leak, such as The Green Building Store’s ES4 WC, avoid these problems.
