NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION (Grades 9, 10, 11 & 12) – AUGUST 27

New students are invited to attend an orientation session on Wednesday, August 27th at 10:00 am. Come to the Counselling Suite and meet your counsellor, find out about Kitsilano, and then go on a student-led tour of the school. Parents are welcome to attend this session. Please note: This session is not intended for grade 8 students as they will be involved in the Grade 8 Orientation on August 28. (If counsellors are not working this week, the administrators will give you an orientation and tour of the school.)

GRADE 8 ORIENTATION – AUGUST 28

Kitsilano’s Link Crew Welcomes Our New Grade Eight Students Every incoming grade 8 student will have a specially selected grade 10, 11 or 12 Mentor (Link Crew Leader) to help make the transition from elementary school to high school a positive one. Link Crew Leaders will make contact with their grade 8 crews throughout the school year to see how things are going or to invite them to special events. The orientation session for new grade 8s is on Thursday, August 28 from 9:45 – 12:00. You should have received a postcard invitation from the school already, but if not, plan to join us. Parents are also welcome – we will have a parent orientation session in the library.

Important Note: Information for new students in Grades 9 to 12: Students who are new to Kitsilano this year and have obtained Honour Roll status at their previous school(s) (since grade 8), should give the appropriate documentation to their grade counsellor. This would include copies of any letters or cards received from a school identifying Honour Roll status and a copy of the report card for which Honour Roll status was recognized. Students should see their counsellor for further information.

GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATION

STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Enrolment applications for student accident insurance will be distributed to students in their homeroom classes. This insurance is voluntary on the part of parents. Parents are encouraged to consider this as the school district does not carry accident insurance. Industrial Alliance Pacific Life Insurance Company is the provider of student accident insurance for the district.

Available coverage is not restricted to school time, but covers accidental injuries 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 12 months a year. Enrolment forms and further information are available on-line at: http://www.studentaccident.com .

GRADE 8 PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The objective of the Physical Education program at Kitsilano is to promote a healthy, active lifestyle. We want to provide as great a variety of sport and recreational opportunities to our students as possible and to make them proficient in those areas. By providing the proper basis, it is hoped that our students will go on to become active adults. Sportsmanship and teamwork are also stressed.

Physical Ed Gym strip: We have PE uniforms. All grade 8 students and new students in grades 9 and 10 are encouraged to purchase their school shorts and T-shirts from their PE teachers. The reasons for this are as follows:

Safety—too many shorts with zippers, belts, etc.

Hygiene—not wearing the same clothes to and from class

Social issues—making fashion statements by wearing inappropriate gym strip COST: $30.00 (navy blue shorts-$20.00/Glidan t-shirt - $10.00, both with the school logo)

PARENT WALKABOUT

Mark your calendar now: Thursday, September 25TH, 6:45 to 9:00 pm The format of the evening will be for parents/guardians to follow their child’s regular Timetable, with ten minutes for each subject class and five minutes to move between classes. Please use the main entrance (centre doors on 10th Avenue).

The purpose of the evening is for you to meet with child’s teachers and for you to become familiar with expectations regarding subject content, assignments, methods of evaluation, materials and equipment, classroom tone and teaching methods used. The format of the ‘Walkabout’ is not conducive to parent-teacher discussions about individual students - it is requested that such discussion be done by telephone or by an interview with the appropriate teacher at a mutually convenient time. Wheelchair Access: Please use the driveway off Larch Street. Elevator access to the various floors of the school is available. An elevator to the cafeteria, gyms and technical studies wing is located in the east wing of the school. Access to the second and third floors is by an elevator located in the west wing of the school.

EXTENDED VACATIONS FOR STUDENTS

Extended vacations and/or vacations during school time are a parental decision. Although teachers may choose to do so, they are not expected to provide work or give extra time for assignments due to vacation absences. Examinations and in-class assignments missed due to vacation may result in a mark of “0”. These absences can seriously impact a student’s achievement. Marks lost due to vacation can affect the final letter grade as evaluation of student learning is based on the work of the whole year. Whenever possible, vacation time should be taken when school is not in session.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS: SIGN UP FOR THE KITS WEEKLY E-BULLETIN AND KITSILANO PAC E-NEWS BULLETIN DISTRIBUTION LISTS

To ensure you are on the distribution list to receive the weekly Kits E-Bulletins (parents/guardians are kept up to date about school events and news) please sign up by sending an e-mail with your preferred email address, your child(ren)’s name(s) and student ID number(s) to [email protected]

SUBJECT AND LOCKER REQUIREMENTS

Textbooks and Notebooks We believe that students who have the best learning resources have a greater chance of success. Textbooks are issued free of charge throughout the school year and are collected at the end of the school year. A charge is levied when textbooks are lost or damaged. Students are required to supply their own notebooks and writing materials.

Please take particular note of the following: Students who lose a text will be charged the current, full replacement cost. This is necessary because funds available to schools from learning resources are very limited.

Students must return the text they were issued. If they return a text that has a different identification number from the text they were issued, they will be charged the full replacement cost for the text.

Students who return texts that have damaged or missing bar codes, making it impossible to identify the text’s owner, will be charged the full replacement cost.

Students who return textbooks that are damaged (torn covers, missing pages, graffiti on pages/cover, etc.) will be charged the full replacement cost.

Each year we spend several thousand dollars replacing books that were not returned. We believe many books may have been forgotten in June 2014 as there was little time for teachers to collect their resources. Please return ALL Kitsilano learning resources to the school office as soon as possible. Our accountant, Ms Bruno, will gladly accept the materials and issue a receipt.

Please make a donation of $25 for Kits

KitsNow! Is the PAC fundraising campaign for the school and we’re asking each family to kindly donate $25. If every family at Kits donated just $25 per year, the PAC could raise more than $25,000. As it stands, we raise less than $7,000 and, unfortunately, many school and club requests get turned down or partially funded because there aren’t enough funds to go around. Look at it this way, making a donation is easier than fundraising! Where do the PAC donations go? PAC divides the funds received based on requests from clubs and different departments. In the past, PAC funds have gone towards the following:

Athletics—uniforms, equipment, team travel

Music—concerts, travel, instruments

Drama—performances, costumes, sets

Art—supplies, portfolios

Math, Science, Socials, English—contests, extras for the classroom

Clubs—speakers, supplies

Awards, scholarships

Any donation is greatly appreciated. A donation of $20 or more receives a tax receipt.

Pay online at www.kitsilanopac.com or drop a cheque off at the school for Kits PAC.

THANK YOU!
