    4.5 out of 5 starsKATIE BRADFORDKOURIER-STANDARD

Most of us have a precon-ceived notion of a film whenwe enter the theatre. I am notimmune. I am perhaps evenmore susceptible as a filmstudent and frequent movie-goer.

My expecta t ions fo rBangkok Dangerous werenon-existent (which is bet-ter than terrible, but not bymuch).

I will be the first to admitthat, while my instincts areoften correct, they are notalways bang on. Luckily, this

film was about as surprisingas it is violent (by which Imean extremely).

Directed by the Pangbrothers and adapted fromtheir popular Thai flick of the same name, Dangerous isa classic assassin film; exceptits not.

Nicolas Cage, for whom Ihave a lukewarm sentimentat best, stars as the assassin(named only as Joe) whoheads to Thailand to com-plete several contract kill-ings.

Cage is, perhaps, one of the first of many wonderfulsurprises in Dangerous. Heis captivating, and is entirelycommitted to the charac-ters enigmatic, murderouspersona. When Joe hires anerrand boy, Kong (Shahkrit

Yamnarm), he finds himself unable to remain detachedfrom the misguided youth. His rules for easy business(namely: keep your con-science by the wayside) goout the window and he takeson Kong as his student. Arefreshingly original storylineinvolving a young deaf-mutegirl from the local pharmacylends an even greater deal of pathos to this shoot-em-up.

In fact, the entire film issurprisingly inventive. Thestyle is very distinctive; thecamera moves in a seeminglylimitless way while provid-ing the feeling of awe thatover-the-top, fantasy styleaction brings. This isnt your

normal paint-by-numbersaction.With all this in mind,

Dangerous still remainsincredibly accessible with theold-standbys of other high-octane films.

My only qualm wouldbe, as usual, that this filmis not original. I have a realdisdain for the prevalenceof remakes, reinventions,re-releases and adaptationsthat have been plaguingHollywood more than usuallately.

A word to those of weak heart, and parents: Dangerousis not for children. Unlessyou want your children to seegraphic sex and decapitations(granted, with style). Keepthis one for the adults only, and enjoy it. I certainly did.
