Action film not perfect but watchable

    KATIE BRADFORD

    KOURIER-STANDARD

There are few things weencounter in our day-to-daylives that are not dependenton technology.

I tried to count the amountof times I rely on a computerof some kind in my day-to-day life, but lost count beforemy first class.

This reliance on comput-ers to do our thinking for ushas lead to many specula-tions about the dangers ofthis dependency.

This anxiety was exam-ined famous in GeorgeOrwells 1984, and continuesto pop up in literature, film

and other types of expressionas technology continues toadvance.

While I wouldnt want tocompare executive producerSteven Spielbergs and direc-tor D.J. Carusos latest thrill-er to 1984, or any other workit may borrow from (or pla-giarize), but it still is a ratherentertaining flick that packsa lot of big names and bigaction.

The film stars rising starShia LaBeouf as Jerry Shaw,a 20-something guy stuck ina rut.

He works a t CopyCabana and cant pay rent.Basically, hes living in every

University dropouts versionof hell.Overshadowed by his

overachieving twin Ethan,Jerry never can seem to getout of his brother's shadow. When he returns home onenight to find his apartmentfilled with illegal terror-ist materials, and his bankaccount magically containingthree-quarters of a milliondollars, Jerry finds himself

suddenly embroiled in anFBI investigation in whichhe is the prime suspect.

A mysterious womancontinues to phone him withinstructions, and when hefinally follows them he findsthat she can control almostevery aspect of the worldaround him. When he meetsup with Rachel Holloman(Michelle Monaghan), theyboth are in a battle to stayalive, obey, and try to escapethe mysterious woman usingthem as pawns in her planfor political assassination.

LaBeouf is one of myfavourite actors to emerge inrecent years, proving himselfto be an unlikely but incred-ibly capable action star whilealso producing great inde-

pendent and dramatic work.Monaghan is also good asthe distraught single moth-er forced to tag along withJerry.

While the writing in thisfilm feels rushed and cookie-cutter at times (which it is,being written by a team ofwriters in an unusually shortamount of time), the support-ing acting talent of RosarioDawson, Billy Bob Thorton

and Michael Chiklis, amongothers, helps to keep this filmwatchable.

It is not perfect though. While Carusos frantic

camera certainly lends forexhilarating action, it alsomakes it very difficult to fol-low action sequences.

This is especially truewith the many car chases inthe film, in which it is oftenhard to discern what is even

    happening.

There are some very pre-dictable plot points as well, and it took the characters fartoo long to catch up.

In all, Eagle Eye providesa great dose of entertainmentand action with huge starpower from LaBeouf.

While the commentaryon the perils of technologi-cal dependence is recycledand slightly clichd, its stillworth the trip to the theatre.
