ARTS/LIFESTYLE/ADVENTURE

MASTERPIECE CLASSIC: ANY HUMAN HEART: William Boyd adapts his acclaimed 2002 novel about a man -- at various times a writer, lover, art dealer and spy -- making his often precarious way through the 20th century. Matthew MacFadyen, Gillian Anderson, Kim Cattrall and Jim Broadbent star. 3-part series begins airing Friday, February 25 at 9 pm

On several occasions in 1796, George Washington came to the Philadelphia home of artist Gilbert Stuart to sit for a life portrait. Those sittings produced what is, arguably, the most famous portrait ever created: the unfinished Athenaeum image of Washington that peers out from the dollar bill. FIRST FACE: THE BUCK STARTS HERE considers the circumstances leading to the creation of Stuart’s portrait, and its subsequent life as the defining image of Washington and, ultimately, as an enduring symbol of America. Ironic contrasts between the mercurial Stuart and the highly controlled Washington, as well as contrasts between Washington the man and Washington the myth, drive this half hour documentary. Airs Monday, February 21 at 8 pm and Sunday, February 27 at 6 pm

AFROPOP: THE ULTIMATE CULTURAL EXCHANGE returns for a third season and continues its exploration of the present-day realities and contemporary lifestyles of Af-ricans, both on the continent and in the evolving Diaspora. Each artful, independent film offers complicated, and at times controversial, viewpoints about Africa. This season’s offerings examine the rise of three reggae musicians in Jamaica; the contemporary Haitian-American experience in New York City; the plight of one Afro-Colombian fam-ily displaced by civil war; and the hotly debated practice of genital mutilation, among others. Season three also contains a 90-minute special on Haiti, featuring a collec-tion of short stories about survival in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. 5-part series begins airing Tuesday, February 1 at 7:30 pm

bIOGRApHY/HISTORY

Legendary New Orleans songwriter Allen Toussaint hits the AUSTIN CITY LIMITS stage with songs from his latest LP, The Bright Mississippi, and classic hits like “Southern Nights.” Airs Saturday, Febru-ary 26 at 9 pm

ADJUST YOUR COLOR: THE TRUTH OF PETEY GREEN: America’s original radio shock-jock, Petey Greene, overcame poverty, drug addiction and prison time to “tell it like it is,” shocking and entertaining ev-eryone from the ghetto to the White House. Narrated by Don Cheadle, this program looks at how his explosive language and brash style unsettled the establishment as he battled both the system and his own demons on a journey to becoming a leading activist during some of the most tumultuous years in recent history. Airs Tuesday, February 15 at 10 pm and Saturday, February 19 at 11 pm

SAM COOKE: CROSSING OVER: Sam Cooke put the spirit of the Black church into popular music -- creating a new sound and setting into motion a chain of events that forever altered the course of popular music and race relations in America. With “You Send Me” in 1957, Cooke became the first African American artist to reach #1 on both the R&B and the pop charts. It was groundbreaking. It was also risky for this young gospel performer to alienate his fans by embracing “the devil’s music” -- but he proved, with his pop/gospel hybrid, that it was possible to win over white teenage listeners and keep his faithful church followers intact. Airs Friday, February 18 at 10 pm

NATURE/SCIENCE/ADVENTURE

DIGITAL MEDIA: NEW LEARNERS OF THE 21ST CENTURY: Targeted at parents, teachers and anyone concerned with education in America, this documentary takes viewers to the front lines of an education revolution. “Digital Media: New Learners of the 21st Century” examines how mobile devices and digital media practices can empower young people to direct their own learning. Documenting five success stories both inside and out of the classroom, the program demonstrates how digital media, games, smart phones and the Internet are fundamentally transforming the way young people commu-nicate, collaborate, participate and learn in the 21st century. Airs Monday, February 14 at 8 pm and Sunday, February 20 at 6 pm

BROKEN TAIL: A TIGER’S LAST JOURNEY: Broken Tail was the most charismatic tiger cub ever seen in Ran-thambore, one of India’s best protected tiger reserves. But suddenly and without warning, Broken Tail abandoned his sanctuary and went on the run, moving through farmland and scrub until he was killed by a train nearly 200 miles from his home. To track Broken Tail’s incred-ible journey, cameraman Colin and his soundman, Salim, retrace the tiger’s path and piece together the cub’s last days - and through his story reveal the fate of the few surviving tigers in India. Airs Monday, February 21 at 10 pm and Thursday, February 24 at 8 pm

The vast and remote Brooks Range, a mountain chain stretching across northern Alaska and into Canada’s Yukon Territory, inspired a national wilderness-protection movement with its pristine vistas and habitats teeming with wildlife. GATES OF THE ARCTIC: ALASKA’S BROOKS RANGE journeys to this seldom-seen natural treasure to explore the region’s inhabitants, culture and history. The few travelers fortunate enough to visit the Brooks Range share their experiences, while stunning high-definition photography captures several brief and unexpected encounters with some of the region’s diverse animal life and a few of its exceptional local characters. Airs Monday, February 28 at 8 pm

CRASH OF FLIGHT 447: On June 1st, 2009, Flight AF447, an Air France Airbus A330 flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean with the loss of all 228 lives. How could a state-of-the-art airliner with elaborate electronic safety and navigation features and a fault-less safety record simply van-ish without trace? NOVA as-sembles a team of seasoned pilots, engineers and safety experts to examine the evidence that emerged in the weeks following this horrific disaster. What led Flight 447’s crew to fly straight into a towering thunderstorm? With expert testimony, satellite weather images, and messages transmit-ted by the doomed plane’s computer system, NOVA pieces together the fatal chain of events. Airs Sunday, February 27 at 7 pm and Monday, February 28 at 9 pm

It was also risky for this young gospel performer to alienate his fans by embracing “the devil’s music” -- but he proved, with his pop/gospel hybrid, that it was possible to win over white teen-age listeners and keep his faithful church followers intact. 6:30 Teacher’s Hour, The (L) Maximizing Academic Engaged Time Part I: Intentional Instructional Plan ning

FIRST FACE: THE BUCK STARTS HERE consid-ers the circumstances leading to the creation of Stuart’s portrait, and its subsequent life as the defining image of Washington and, ulti-mately, as an enduring symbol of America. Ironic contrasts between the mercurial Stu-art and the highly controlled Washington, as well as contrasts between Washington the man and Washington the myth, drive this half hour documentary. CRASH OF FLIGHT 447: On June 1st, 2009, Flight AF447, an Air France Airbus A330 flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean with the loss of all 228 lives. How could a state-of-the-art airliner with elaborate electronic safety and navigation features and a fault-less safety record simply vanish without trace? NOVA assembles a team of sea-soned pilots, engineers and safety experts to examine the evidence that emerged in the weeks following this horrific disaster. What led Flight 447’s crew to fly straight into a towering thunderstorm? With ex-pert testimony, satellite weather images, and messages transmitted by the doomed plane’s computer system, NOVA pieces to-gether the fatal chain of events. Airs Sun-day, February 27 at 7 pm and Monday, February 28 at 9 pm

The vast and remote Brooks Range, a moun-tain chain stretching across northern Alaska and into Canada’s Yukon Territory, inspired a national wilderness-protection movement with its pristine vistas and habitats teem-ing with wildlife. GATES OF THE ARCTIC: ALASKA’S BROOKS RANGE journeys to this seldom-seen natural treasure to explore the region’s inhabitants, culture and history. The few travelers fortunate enough to visit the Brooks Range share their experiences, while stunning high-definition photography captures several brief and unexpected en-counters with some of the region’s diverse animal life and a few of its exceptional local characters.
