MAY 22, 2016 – THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

Page 2 | 232 St. John the Baptist Catholic Church

TRINITY SUNDAY

The dogma of faith which forms the object of the

feast is this: There is one God and in this one

God there are three Divine Persons; the Father

is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God.

Yet there are not three Gods, but one, eternal,

incomprehensible God! The Father is not more

God than the Son, neither is the Son more God

than the Holy Spirit. The Father is the first

Divine Person; the Son is the second Divine

Person, begotten from the nature of the Father

from eternity; the Holy Spirit is the third Divine

Person, proceeding from the Father and the

Son. No mortal can fully fathom this sublime

truth.

Why is this feast celebrated at this

particular time? It may be interpreted as a

finale to all the preceding feasts. All three

Persons contributed to and shared in the work

of redemption. The

Father sent His Son

to earth, for "God

so loved the world

as to give His only-

begotten Son." The

Father called us to

the faith. The Son,

our Savior Jesus

Christ became man

and died for us. He

redeemed us and made us children of God. He

ever remains the liturgist par excellence to

whom we are united in all sacred functions.

After Christ's ascension the Holy Spirit,

however, became our Teacher, our Leader, our

Guide, our Consoler. On solemn occasions a

thanksgiving Te Deum rises spontaneously from

Christian hearts.

The feast of the Most Holy Trinity may well

be regarded as the Church's Te Deum of

gratitude over all the blessings of the Christmas

and Easter seasons; for this mystery is a

synthesis of Christmas, Epiphany, Easter,

Ascension and Pentecost. This feast, which falls

on the first Sunday after Pentecost, should

make us mindful that actually every Sunday is

devoted to the honor of the Most Holy Trinity,

that every Sunday is sanctified and consecrated

to the triune God. Sunday after Sunday we

should recall in a spirit of gratitude the gifts

which the Blessed Trinity is bestowing upon us.

The Father created and predestined us; on the

first day of the week He began the work of

creation. The Son redeemed us; Sunday is the

"Day of the Lord," the day of His resurrection.

The Holy Spirit sanctified us, made us His

temple; on Sunday the Holy Spirit descended

upon the infant Church. Sunday, therefore,

is the day of the Most Holy Trinity.

Gospel of John 16:12-15

This week we return to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. This Sunday and next Sunday, however, are designated as solemnities, special days that call our attention to central mysteries of our faith. Today, on the first Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This feast invites us to consider what we believe about God, who has revealed himself to us in the Trinity—one God in three persons. The verses of today's Gospel come near the end of Jesus' long discourse at the Last Supper. In the early part of this discourse, as we saw last week on Pentecost, Jesus offers assurances to the disciples. Even though he must leave the disciples, he tells them that they will have a future because of the help he will send them in the Holy Spirit. In this section he focuses more on the shape of the future, which will include Jesus' victory over the world that they will share in. The disciples of Jesus cannot know the future. They can only know that, whatever shape the future takes, they will not have to face it alone. They have the Spirit of Truth, who will continue to provide the teaching of Jesus in the future. Reading this passage on Trinity Sunday reinforces our understanding of the unity shared by the members of the Trinity. Although the idea of one God in three persons remains a mystery, we have the assurance that, as Jesus and the Father share all, Jesus and the Spirit share all. Think of the last time you witnessed an act of selfless love in your family. Parents and caregivers of all kinds are called upon to act selflessly every day. Family life calls us to share selfless love with one another. God is the model for us of selfless love. There was no need for God to create our planet or the creatures that inhabit it; it was an act of selfless love. There was also no need for God to send his only Son to save us. That too was an act of selfless love. As we draw closer to God and the mystery of the Trinity, we learn about God's love. God has lavished us with love in the persons of the Son and the Spirit, who in turn nurture in us the desire to do the same. When we open ourselves to be filled with an awareness of the divine life within us, we participate in the endless spiral of love that leads to eternal life. Whenever we share selfless love in the family, we are sharing in the life of the Trinity.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE PRAYER CENACLES (Susan Middleton)

The Cenacle is basically a prayer meeting. The Disciples of Jesus were gathered together with Mary, the Mother of Jesus after His resurrection and ascension, awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit in the Cenacle of Jerusalem. In imitation, we come together to pray with Mary especially with the recitation of the Holy Rosary. Canacles may be composed with as few as 2-3 people. We will gather in the chapel in the presence of the image of Our Lady Of Guadalupe

TUESDAY MORNING REFLECTION (Anita Colahan) Group will meet immediately after morning Mass. We will be using the program “OPENING THE WORD” from Formed.org and reflect on the upcoming Gospel.
