From Our Deputy Principal

STARS Assembly Term 2

STARS nominations have been finalised and the parents/caregivers of successful recipients will have received an email to indicate this.

The STARS Assemblies are among my favourite events that occur each year. We get to recognise the students who apply themselves with diligence every day, even though they might not necessarily be the top performers. The fact that we get over 200 eligible students for each occasion demonstrates the positive learning attitude that exists in classrooms across our school every day.

Congratulations, to all the worthy recipients who will receive their award on Friday May 31.

Waiting for ... The BusA large number of students are required to wait for a significant period of time after school for their bus. Despite our many efforts to improve this in the past, unfortunately, these conditions still exist. If a student wishes to visit the Shell Service Station after school, a note from home must be submitted to me before departure. A semester pass can also be issued if we are provided with a note requesting this. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

KARS ProgramOur KARS (Kariong At Risk Students) program will operate again this term. A selected number of students identified by class teachers will have a mentor teacher assigned to them in an endeavour to get their study and school practices back on track. Parents of students involved in the program will have had a letter sent to them.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week, 27 May to 3 June, is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The timing of this week is significant. It commemorates two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey; the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

The theme for 2019 is ‘Grounded in Truth - Walk Together with Courage’.

The aspiration is to have a history of our colonial days that reflects the true history of those times and from that shared understanding we can, as a multicultural society in the present, move towards a unified future in which we understand, value and respect each other.Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

(Sourced significantly from: https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-reconciliation-week/)

At Kariong Mountains High School, we strive to be a school that values diversity, recognises and celebrates our Aboriginal heritage and prepares students for taking on the challenges of living in twenty-first century Australia.

To achieve this vision, we must take an active role in growing students understanding of the importance of National Reconciliation Week as it relates to our Australian identity.

FOUNDATION

WINTER APPEALHELP A CHILDTHIS WINTER

It is a sad reality that there are over 116,000 homeless people living in Australia!

Wiseberry Kariong is seeking donations to help our local shelter, Coast Shelter Gosford, cope with the cold winter months. We are asking our community to donate clean blankets, new socks and jumpers. Non-perishable foods may also be donated.

If you have any of these items to give away, please stop by our office this June and drop them off. Any help will be greatly appreciated and will go a long way to make a difference.
