Kariong Mountains High School Newsletter - Term 2 - Week 10 - 2020 2

The end of Term 2...sees us finish our alternative learning program and a return to the original 2020 timetable and lesson times. Timetables will be available for viewing towards the end of the second week of the holidays.

Years 7-10 reports will be published at the end of Week 1, Term 3. We are exploring an alternative format for parent-teacher interviews, as events are still not able to be held at schools.

Subject SelectionWe are unable to hold a traditional subject selection evening this year so have developed video presentations, that are on the website, to support information in the subject booklets. Please use the holiday period to discuss subjects and view the videos with your Year 8 and/or Year 10 student. Any questions, please email the school. Year 10 students will participate in a panel interview during Weeks 1 & 2 to ensure that their selected pattern of study complies with NESA rules, ATAR or non-ATAR pathways and challenges them to pursue a course of study that best meets their needs.

UniformWe have a new addition to the school uniform, with the introduction of school track pants. They will become available from the start of Term 3, at a cost of about $30. This allows greater choice for colder weather conditions and should take away reasons for not being in uniform.

Reminder of School Attendance and Study Options for Stage 6 Students When senior students do not have periods at the start or end of the day, they are allowed to have flexible attendance around these times. Once a student comes to school, however, they must stay for the duration of their learning. Please do not write notes requesting that students can leave and come back as they will be refused unless there is a genuine need relating to an appointment, for example, that could not be scheduled at a different time.

Stage 6 students have access to 2 learning platforms, Atomi and Edrolo, which they can use for study and revision purposes. Term 3 is an important time for Years 11 and 12 students and making use of ‘free’ periods, at school, to revise and deepen understanding will lead to improved results.

I hope that all our families have a safe and enjoyable break. I look forward to working with you next term.

Term 3: return to ‘normality’ With a return to ‘normality’ for next term, I would like to reinforce our school expectations.

Students are to arrive to school on time. Our school day continues to commence at 8:45am. Punctuality to class is also important, the regular bell times will be in operation. Note: Due to a reduction in the length of Assembly, school will finish at 2:35pm on Wednesdays (10 minutes earlier than the original time).

Attendance at school will be closely monitored next term. Students who are ill are expected to stay at home and the absence explained through a note, phone call or email.

The wearing of uniform across the school has diminished significantly since students have returned and this is very disappointing. Wearing the school uniform sets students for the right mindset at the start of the day. It helps develop a positive school culture and strongly links to our value of Unity. If there is no improvement next term, there will be stricter sanctions for those who repeatedly fail to comply.

Students are reminded that phones are expected to be placed in bags before entering classrooms. They are more often than not a distraction to learning and, used inappropriately, are disrespectful to the teacher conducting the lesson. This strongly links to our values of Knowledge and Respect.

I wish all students and their families a happy safe break and look forward to a great Term 3, where our values of Unity, Knowledge and Respect are on display in all classes.

A new NSW school curriculumEvery student prepared and ready for their future

Visit nswcurriculumreview.nesa.nsw.edu.au to find out more.

What are the recommendations of the Review?

The Curriculum Review includes 24 recommendations that address the following areas:

The content and structure of new syllabuses

• New syllabuses will prioritise core knowledge, understanding and skills, giving

teachers time to focus on depth of learning.

• The structure of the new syllabuses will provide improved information to parents

about their child’s progress and the next steps in their learning.

Why did we have a Curriculum Review?

In May 2018, the NSW Government announced the launch of the NSW Curriculum

Review (the Review). This was the first comprehensive review of the NSW primary

and secondary curriculum since 1989, and aimed to equip students to continue to

contribute to Australian society in the 21st century.

Parents and carers were invited to be part of the Review through consultation

opportunities in 2018 and 2019. Feedback from parents and carers informed

the shape of the final recommendations of the Review.

The publication of the NSW Curriculum Review final report indicates the

completion of the review process and signals the commencement of

activities to achieve curriculum reform.
