the news in red and black all the news from redding way

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the players, officials and supporters from Staines Lammas, also today’s three match officials for this Division One encounter. This is only our second league game at Redding Way this year, our last home game being Saturday 7th January when the visitors were Frimley Green. Since then we’ve had four blank Saturdays, three of them down to the weather, and one week without a scheduled fixture, plus two away games played, - Bedfont Sports last month, and Cobham away last week. After seven weeks, it’s welcome back home! Since the 3-2 win over Frimley Green, our next fixture took us to Bedfont Sports where a disappointing performance saw Knaphill fall to a 3-0 defeat. Last weekend, was our first match for a month away at Cobham, where Knaphill gained three worthy points in the 2-0 win. Knaphill scored after just ten minutes through a Craig Knowles header, and increased that lead after 57 minutes with a goal from Luke Craig. With Dan Pritchard sitting out his third match of a three match suspension, Jimmy Edwick came into the side and produced several fine saves to deny Cobham getting back into the game, including a penalty. A performance that gained him the Man of the Match award. The win, a very welcome one, put us on 27 points, but remaining 13th in the table. It leaves seven games to play of Knaphill’s league programme, including today’s. After today we have games against Worcester Park, South Kilburn, and CB Hounslow at home, whilst our travels takes us to Bookham, Westfield, and the rearranged match at Warlingham(twice postponed). The two original dates that got called off, were on a Saturday, but the League have re-arranged the fixture for midweek on Wednesday 21st March. Match reports on last month’s Bedfont Sports and last Saturday’s game at Cobham, are elsewhere in the programme. Our Reserves, were out of action after their match at the end of January until last weekend when they were home to Sandhurst Town Reserves, but lost 4-2. Knaphill Youth U18s have been progressing in the Grant McLellan Cup. After a 1st round win over Guildford City Youth U18s, they beat Eversley Youth 1-0 in the 2ndround, which gave them another home tie, Molesey Youth being the visitors to Redding Way for a third round tie. Back to this afternoon’s game, and one which we hope will show a vastly different performance from the one delivered back in September from the previous meeting against today’s opponents, that brought about a 7-3 defeat. Only two Knaphill players remain from that game who are currently in the first team squad. Last weekend saw Guernsey strengthen their position at the top of Division One with a 5-1 win at Farleigh Rovers, but the highest score of the day came at Worcester Park, which saw an incredible scoreline of Worcester Park’s 7-5 win against Sheerwater. The home side were 7-0 up at halftime, then Sheerwater hit back with five goals in the second half. Five goals away from home would normally have secured all three points, but although conceding seven, that second half performance alone deserved at least a Sheer of the points…….

Knaphill Football Club are delighted to announce two further Life-Vice Presidents. Phil Gasson who served as a player, fundraiser and chairman dating back from the early seventies until the early eighties and still continues today as a local referee in the lower leagues in Surrey. Bob Pritchard who joined the club as coach in 2005, helped the club to two back to back league titles in The Surrey Intermediate League then went onto managed the first team where he guided his side to finish seventh in 2007/08, fifth in 2008/09 and third in 2009/10 in The Combined Counties League and played a major part in getting where the club is now in senior football.

Phil Gasson & Bob Pritchard

Knaphill Football Club are pleased to announce that Intecsea will continue as the clubs main sponsor. The global company which has its UK headquarters in Knaphill will continue to support The Knappers having become the clubs main sponsor during the summer last year. INTECSEA is a global company within the Worley Parsons Group and offers all the Group’s capabilities for floating systems, offshore pipelines and subsea production systems. Combined with Worley Parsons Group, they offer clients complete project expertise from subsea wellhead through onshore processing and distribution. For over 25 years, INTECSEA has provided frontier technology leadership for the energy industry’s most challenging offshore field development and pipeline projects. The deal was finalised between Knaphill chairman David Freeman and Finance Manager Atteeque Shahin of Intecsea. Chairman David Freeman said "I am really pleased that Intecsea have agree to continue there support of the club", "we have a number of plans to help improve the ground both inside and out and Intecsea will help us achieve this aswell as help with our running costs, we will continue to support Intecsea in as many ways as possible some of which are already in place so i believe both club and sponsor will reap the benefits of each other".

After a year’s break due to ground improvements, Knaphill Ladies are happy to announce they will again be hosting an all Ladies/Girls tournament this year. The format this season will be 8-a-side (max squad size 11) played on junior sized football piches with large goals (to ensure not many 0-0 draws!). Entry is open to all Ladies teams playing in the LSER DIV 1, GLWFL and SCWGL. This tournament will take place in the afternoon.

In the morning we will be holding an U18 tournament, this will also be open to this seasons SCWGL U16 teams, who are offered the opportunity to play against the current U18 league teams they are likely to face next season.

There will be an all-day BBQ, bar and other refreshments.

Both age groups will play in a league format to ensure lots of football, with the top teams going through to the knock out stages.

Entry cost will be £30.00 per team (payment by cheque with entry please, payable to Knaphill FC). Free parking will be available close to the ground, but a £1.00 fee per adult is payable on entry to the ground, including all players, each team will receive 2 free passes for management. U16 children will receive free entry.

Hopefully this time next season we will see the benefits of the drainage works due to be carried out on the pitch during March. For a number of years the drainage at the pavilion end of the ground is more or less non existant and has caused the club several problems in that time.

We will be having the same work carried out as what Woking FC did a few years back when their pitch was suffered many a postponement through a waterlogged pitch.

Firstly I would like to welcome Staines Lammas to Redding Way, Lammas is a club that I was part of for many years and this is the first time that I have actually played or managed against them. Lammas have had a great season in the cups reaching two finals already and are still in two more cup competitions, plus they are still in with a chance to gain a top three finish. Since my last notes we have travelled to Bedfont Sports and Cobham, we was disappointing against Sports but the performance against Cobham was fantastic, especially the performance of Jimmy Edwick who was outstanding on the day. I've told the players that I will be rotating the team in the coming weeks as our preparation for next season is already underway, I want to try players in different positions, this will give my coaching team and myself the chance to assess where we want to add to the squad in the summer, although after the three winning performances we've had so far this year, I would say we are in a very strong position already. Really looking forward to today’s game and hopefully we can bring pick up all 3 points. I hope you all enjoy today's game and enjoy the fantastic facilities at Knaphill FC. Up The Knappers!

COMBINED COUNTIES LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

MATCH REPORTMATCH REPORT

WIND KNOCKED OUT After a week’s enforced break from their league programme, Knaphill failed to capitalise on their previous two wins with a rather uninspiring performance away to high flying Bedfont Sports. Any chance of maximum points were gone with the wind from which a first half with a strong gusty wind behind them, showed more creativity and chances, only they were often over hitting the ball forward and see it carried further by the gusty wind. Although the wind had abated after halftime, so did Knaphill’s hopes of getting back in the game during the second half, as they conceded two more goals. Knaphill started brightly looking eager to make an early breakthrough, but with both teams pretty evenly matched in the first half an hour, neither tested their opposing keepers with any venom. Craig Knowles almost became provider for an early opener for Knaphill, but his dangerous and well delivered cross, failed to have anyone on the end of it for the finishing touch. Similar thing happened on the half hour when Michael Pym swung over a cross only to escape any other Knaphill player. Bedfont Sports were awarded a penalty after 33 minutes following a bad bit of judgement in the box by George Pearce. The spot kick was well saved by debut keeper Alexandru Gaurilcaia, only to concede a goal 20 seconds later due to Knaphill’s defence failing to clear their lines after the penalty save. Bedfont Sports went 2-0 up straight from the kick off in the second half from another mistake, when Warren Collins back pass was intercepted by Saman Kanani who fired past the keeper. After the home side had made it 3-0 with Kanani getting his hat trick in the 69th minute. Knaphill from that point were just looking and hoping they could put some decency to the scoreline. But it was not their day, and with no fixture scheduled for next Saturday, they must look ahead to their next match at home to Worcester Park on Saturday 4th February, hoping they can rekindle the more upbeat and positive displays shown against Eversley and Frimley Green earlier in the month. Team: Gaurilcaia, J.Pearce(Coultas 78mins), M.Ward(Macaskill 78mins), J.Ward, G.Pearce, Parrington, Collins(Wetherall 58mins), Craig, Pym, Knowles. Booked: G.Pearce, Collins, Wilson, Wetherall.

COBHAM V KNAPHILL SATURDAY 18TH FEBRUARY 2012, 3.00PM

COMBINED COUNTIES LEAGUE DIVISION ONE

MATCH REPORTMATCH REPORT

BACK TO WINNING WAYS

Having not played for a month, Knaphill came back to fulfill 90 minutes of football and adapt them-selves with a satisfying 2-0 win away to Cobham on Saturday. They certainly showed more endeavour and bite to their game than when these two teams met back in October which saw Cobham put six past Knaphill without reply. A number of changes were enforced as manager Phil Elery was without keeper Dan Pritchard, defend-ers Liam Parrington, George Pearce, Matt Ward and Matt Clarke. In came Jimmy Edwick, Sean Har-vey and Shadrach Williams. Not only did Knaphill hold onto their two goal lead in this return game, but a clean sheet was also ad-vantageous on an afternoon blighted by rain and wind, with a defence that dealt sufficiently with what Cobham had to offer up front, especially keeper Jimmy Edwick, who was to deny Cobham on several occasions with some timely saves, including a penalty. Both teams created chances in a first half that saw the visitors take the edge and initiative, which was to show as early as the 10th minute when a free kick from Gavin Brainch, playing his first game on his return to Knaphill, delivered the ball into the 18 yard box, which saw Craig Knowles having two head-ers targeted for goal, the first came back off the bar, the second chance neatly tucked away into the net. Earlier, Edwick denied Jake Baxter from creating an early opener for the home side. After 27 minutes, Knowles penetrated the Cobham defence, only to see his strike fly just past the far post, then 90 seconds later, Edwick stubbed out a goal scoring opportunity for the home side with a low diving save. Cobham went close on the half hour when Scott Day saw his long shot fly off the the bar. Knaphill closest effort in the latter stages was from a Steve Coultas shot into the side netting. Chances came for both sides in the second half, one for Knaphill’sMichael Pym, whose effort in the 54th minute, was hacked away to safety by a Cobham defender. But soon after, Knaphill were to strengthen their lead. Substitute Shadrach Williams, who had not been on the field long, became a provider to-wards Knaphill’s second goal when his neatly worked pass was met by Luke Craig who fired into the far corner of goal after 57 minutes to make it 2-0. Cobham’s substitute Lee Hall saw his shot turned over the bar by Edwick, then in the 66th minute, Cobham were awarded a dubious penalty. But it was Edwick who was to thwart Cobham again when he saved Baxter’s spot kick to keep Knaphill’s two goal lead intact. From then on, goal scoring opportuni-ties became more limited, but Knaphill held their grip on the game to come away with three worthy points. Knaphill will no doubt be looking to enhance on this result next Saturday when they play hosts to Staines Lammas, their first home match at Redding Way for seven weeks. Knaphill: Edwick, Harvey, Brainch, J.Ward, Macaskill, Wetherall, Jones, Coultas(Williams 56mins), Pym(Wilson 68mins), Craig(Collins 77mins), Knowles. Goals: Knowles 10mins, Craig 57mins. Booked: Craig Sent off: Williams

thelasttimewemethere saturday 22nd january 2011 Knaphill 2 Staines Lammas 0 Wills, Cardona The transformation of Knaphill’s form continued with a well earned win against Staines Lammas at Redding Way on Saturday. Having picked up just three league wins in 15 matches prior to the start of the year, Knaphill have now gained maximum points from their last 3 games this month, with new found confidence and commitment in their play. It was only the second time Knaphill have beaten Staines Lammas since they joined the Combined Counties League in season 2007/08. The game started a quite a fast pace with early pressure from Knaphill on their opponents. Matt Baker fired a free kick wide of the post, and James Wills shot went just wide of the far post in the opening spell. Although Knaphill had a lot of possession and early chances, the visitors returned their challenge with some quick breaks, which also became relevant in the second half. But the home defence coped well. After Baker’s header was just over the bar on 22 minutes, play switched to the other end, and Chris Bullen had an opportunity to score but was denied by keeper Richard Shelley who did well to cut out his effort. Then within two minutes, a Knaphill attack saw Chris Fox fired well over following a neat pass from Baker. Knaphill got their just reward for perseverance when James Wills delivered a cracking effort from around the edge of the 18 yard area to make it 1-0 after 37 minutes. With just two minutes remaining of the first half, Knaphill’s Tom Davis suffered a serious knee injury. The midfield player was taken to hospital where Xrays revealed a cracked knee cap which required an operation over the weekend. The second half saw Knaphill carrying their slender single goal lead and Staines Lammas creating several chances in search of an equaliser, but with some poor finishing, and some good defending from the home side. Knaphill held firm as they pushed forward in a bid to increase their lead. That came in the 84th minute when Baker’s shot was only partially cleared, and substitute Ed Cardona was well positioned to tap home from close range. There was still time though for a possible third goal, as Fox sent an effort just wide, and Ricky Hogsden went close, only for the keeper to deny him. Team: Shelley, Cox, Lumley, Darnell, Gamble, Brainch, Fox, Davis(Cardona), Turner, Baker, Wills(Hogsden).

U18’s Girls Next Home Game Colne Valley ‘A’ Sunday 26th March 2012

Kick Off 10am Free Entry

Starting with the U18 Girls, who ply their trade in the Surrey County Women’s & Girls League U18 Premier Division, they are looking to continue their recent league and cup successes. With three league wins since the start of the year of 3-0, 6-0 & 9-2, plus a cup win of 11-2 over Croydon Borough Girls (who lead the 1st Division); the Girls have been bulldozing their way to a League & Cup double. The Girls have only been defeated twice so far this season with an early season reverse to Cole Valley and a fighting performance against senior side Fulham Compton OB Ladies in losing 0-1 at home in the County Cup. Their nearest challengers for the League title are QPR Girls who were beaten 3-1 away earlier in the season and arrive at Redding way in late March for a possible title decider. I am sure the Girls want the League title wrapped up before their visit. In the League Cup a final appearance against the same opposition, date and venue to be announced. Special mention must be made of Olivia Buzaglo and Jess Gregory who are both regular goalscorers (14 between them in the last three league games), but the results are from a fantastic team effort from every-one involved. The Ladies team, although not lacking in any of the effort or desire of the Girls, have struggled this year as injury, suspension and unavailability have decimated match day availability to the detriment of the results if not the overall performance. Many match days have seen a bare 11 players arriving, some carrying injuries, but all determined to play to their best ability. This year’s results have seen three away defeats 5-1, 3-1 & 10-1; but far better performances at home with a 0-0 draw against current league leaders KIKK Utd and a 3-1 League Cup win over Leyton Ladies to progress to the quarter-finals for the second year running. Like the Youth Team, progress in the cups has been tempered by the inconsistent league form. However like all Knaphill’s teams this season, there is never any lack of determination, passion and desire to do their best for club and team-mates.

Youth Team Next Home Game

THATCHAM TOWN U18’S Thursday 8th March 2012 Kick Off 7.30pm

Knaphill U18’s continue to defy their league form with two further wins in the Grant-McLellan Cup and the Allied Counties League Cup, the result is two Quarter-Final ties against Molesey at home in the Grant-McLellan and away to Maidenhead United in the League Cup. Their form in the League has been patchy and the visit of league leaders Bracknell Town to Redding Way in mid-January did nothing to change that perception. After making a strong start Knaphill fell behind to two soft Bracknell goals and looked bereft of ideas, when suddenly Harrison Deacon and Josh Hughes both struck just before half-time to send the sides in all square. Despite this promise Knaphill never really threatened to stamp their authority on the game in the second half and two further Bracknell goals sealed another home defeat for The Knappers. The League Cup provided much better fair as Knaphill took to the road again (3 away ties in this cup so far), this time to Burnham just outside Maidenhead. The match was played at high speed in the first half and Knaphill raced into a two goal lead courtesy of Harrison Deacon double, one a sublime free kick which was beautifully placed into the top corner with the Burnham keeper left flapping in the wind. However Burnham fought back through a free kick from a careless foul given away on the edge of the box and a few minutes later by a penalty. Fortunately for Knaphill, Josh Hughes restored the lead before half-time. Not wanting to have made the trip to Burnham for nothing, The Knappers quickly took control of the game in the second half. They had to wait until the 84th minute for substitute Johnny Coats, on his debut, to beat the keeper from the edge of the box and the icing on the cake came from Josh Hughes as going 1-on-1, he chipped the keeper in added time. In the Grant-McLellan Cup (for CCL Youth teams) and home tie against rivals Eversley proved to be a much tighter affair. Both teams worked very hard to cancel the other side out and a chess match of game resulted with few real opportunities in the first half. With neither team wishing to stay on for extra time, the second half became more urgent as shots flew on the goals at both ends. The Knappers held the upper hand for long periods, but couldn’t find their way past a resolute Eversley defence and a goalkeeper in fine form! With four minutes to go Haluna Mesembe was bundled over in the box and Liam Welsh stepped up to take the penalty – straight at the keeper!! However Liam repaid his colleagues by converting a Josh Hughes cross two minutes later to seal the tie. The Youth team now have six home games and just two away games to play (semi-final and final appearances not withstanding), so plenty of opportunity to see the future of Knaphill FC on Thursday nights. Check the website for dates (subject to change).
