TOM TALKS TOM TALKSEvening All,Today we welcome Steve Thomson and his Dorchester Town team as well as all their supporters and officials for another local derby. They have had some really good results of late most recently a very good away draw at league leaders Taunton so there is no doubt they will be tough opponents tonight.

The Gosport game on Saturday was extremely frustrating. I felt we dominated the game without creating enough clear cut chances. In the first half I thought the game was relatively open and although Gosport were looking to defend and hit us on the counter attack the game was reasonably open and we were looking like we were capable of scoring goals. In the second half understandably I suppose, Gosport decided to defend very deep and get everyone behind the ball. I felt we didn’t respond to this particularly intelligently. We were trying to thread balls through central areas which were very congested when we should have been using the width of the pitch and getting more crosses in. In the end we still had chances to win the game and to drop points in the fashion we did was extremely frustrating. However, I asked the players before the game to make sure they replicated the intensity of the two previous fixtures against Salisbury and Weymouth and I thought they did that. That’s the way we want to go forward playing with real energy and passion. Sometimes you have games where you have a quality to match and sometimes you won’t. However, if you have a baseline of high intensity then I believe you are going to consistently pick up good results.

It is fair to say that the playoff positions are much further away than we all would have liked. It is going to take a big effort for us to reach them. Getting points tonight is a vital first step towards climbing the table. I am aware of it and the players are aware of it.

In terms of personnel it was good to have Marvin Brooks back against Gosport on Saturday. I think Jamie Whisken is probably still a week away from fitness and Adam Grange has picked up a knock which means he won’t be involved tonight. Young Ollie Balmer who has been on loan at Blackfield was not getting enough game time there so we have agreed to cancel his contract so that he can play matches for Hamworthy. We are in no way discarding Ollie and want to retain links with him going forward. I still feel that Ollie has got the potential to develop into a very good Southern League player and will support him fully in trying to do that. At this stage in his development getting games at Hamworthy is something that he needs to do.

A huge blow the Club has received in recent days is the news that Steve Devlin will require an operation on a ruptured ACL. As we know from painful previous experience in terms of both Michael Walker and Luke Roberts it means he will probably be out of action for around a year. It means we also as a club face the headaches of trying to get him the best medical treatment possible. Unfortunately, because of the cost of a private operation it is likely that Steve is going to have to be reliant on the NHS.

My concern is the delay that is involved in this process. Everything we can do to assist Steve we will. He has been an amazingly loyal servant to the Club and is someone that I personally have great affection for as do the rest of the players. We are all devastated about his news but all support him fully in getting back to fitness. He is certainly going to be a big loss to us on the field.

Enjoy the game TomDevs 20th October 2018 away against Haringey Borough

Evening All,Welcome back for tonight’s game vs Dorchester Town FC. First I want to on behalf of the whole squad to wish Devs a speedy recovery. He’s a top lad and a big part of the changing room so hearing the extent of his injury wasn’t nice but he’s got everyone behind him and we’ll all be wishing him back ASAP stronger than ever, get well soon Devs!

On to tonight; we are three games unbeaten now and we have to just look forward and keep on building. As long as we stay focused and keep working hard the wins will come.

We lacked a little quality against Gosport and they were very lucky to leave with a point. Decisions in the game didn’t really go for us but that’s been the way all season so we can’t beat ourselves up about it, we have to just keep on striving. We’ll create our own luck through hard work and it will change.

It’s fantastic we’ve secured James Constables’ services, he’s been a pleasure to play with since he came in this season and his work ethic has been second to none, that’s exactly what we need. Many goals to come I am sure.

Get behind the boys this evening and let’s change these draws to wins!

Up the Dolphins!

We are all rooting for Devs to make a speedy recovery.

Tonight we welcome our friends from Dorchester Town FC. Matt Lucas, his colleagues, the Magpies players and supporters are most welcome to the Black Gold Stadium. Can I say straightaway to our visitors tonight just how much I regret having to have the crowd segregated. This is not something we would ever have wanted or thought remotely necessary. It has been forced upon us at the insistence of the Police despite my pleas that the relationship between our two Clubs has always been a combination of healthy rivalry and friendship. I do so hope that it does not spoil the enjoyment of the visit for the travelling supporters.

Dorchester have certainly been travelling well of late with some fantastic results on the road this campaign not least a stirring 1-1 at Taunton on Saturday. Our result was the same of course but I suspect not derived with quite the same satisfaction. A quite superb goal from what is fast becoming a very productive partnership between James Constable and Luke Roberts should have been part of the journey towards three points. It probably would have been had the obvious penalty been awarded when Luke was poleaxed in the box only for a free kick to be given in his favour for an earlier foul in the run that had led him to a brilliant goal scoring opportunity. A quite bewildering decision as was the decision to wave play on earlier when James Constable had been brought down as he was bearing in on goal. The win that so much of our play suggested we would secure just would not come!We go again tonight and hopefully this time the three points will be ours.

Pride of place in these notes however, must go to Tom Killick who tonight takes charge of his 800th game as our manager. His win ratio is awesome: 498 wins out of 799 so far. Fergie would be proud of that record! Tom is quite simply the best Manager we have ever had and his team talks remain as fresh and as inspiring now as they were back in 2004 when he started to give them. Long may his enthusiasm for the role remain. We have been truly fortunate to have had him at the helm for so long.

Saturday next we travel to Tiverton whilst a week tonight we are back here for another League fixture v Swindon Supermarine ko 7.45.

Finally I have to say how devastated the whole Club is at the news that Steve Devlin has torn his cruciate ligament. It is the injury every footballer dreads.Devs has been one of our best ever signings, he has been a star of our particular show since he joined us seven years ago almost to the day. Certainly he has been one of my own personal favourite Poole players from the very first game he played for us. We all desperately hope he can secure an operation as soon as possible and then get back to fitness and back to playing just as soon as the recovery process permits.“Good luck Devs”.

Enjoy the game and don’t forget the 50:50 tickets.

Evening All,Welcome to tonight’s game and to our visitors from Dorchester. We wish you a safe journey home. Poole supporters are enjoying being often at home these days as we make up a backlog of home games.

Before I became a vicar, I spent seven years working in the overseas aid business, travelling around the world to various developing countries. During those years I spent hundreds, maybe thousands, of hours in airports. So my ears pricked up at a conference a while ago when the speaker likened a healthy church to an airport, and at first I was puzzled. Then he said that the sign of a healthy airport is not beautiful buildings but aircraft arriving and departing. (The recent ‘drone’ closure of Gatwick demonstrated this!). Likewise, a healthy church is one where people ‘land’ by becoming Christians and ‘take off’ by going out in service and mission.

I’ve been reflecting recently on how life can be likened to a ‘flight’: sometimes smooth, sometimes turbulent, sometimes uneventful, sometimes memorable. But the purpose of a flight is to go somewhere, and to land there. For some people, ‘landing’ when they become a Christian is straightforward, but for others it’s a bumpy process in difficult conditions, like landing in a strong crosswind. To extend the analogy, perhaps a Christian minister is like an air traffic controller talking people down and giving them clearance to land.

I wonder - how is the ‘flight’ of your life going? If you’re not yet a Christian, what would prompt you to come out of the ‘holding pattern’ and land on God’s runway? Or maybe you’ve already ‘landed’ as a Christian and need equipping/refuelling for your next flight. Whichever is you, I hope you’ll enjoy the best destination of all, the kingdom of God.

Wishing you God’s best,

SQUAD LIST WELCOMEFollowing a great run of form, the Reserves played Moneyfields FC away last Saturday and put in a brave and competitive performance against an aggressive and much older team. We created many chances with Ryan Mitchell and Sam Herrington both scoring. Strong performances around the team included Charlie Turner and Sam Herrington in midfield, Ryan Mitchell and Tyrrell Sampson up front and Louis MacArthur at centre half, alongside Ben Rolleston in goal; who again is on the bench for the first team tonight. This was followed by a superb footballing display against Wimborne u18s on Sunday, winning 4-2, where four of the Reserves played, including welcoming back Oli Lowes from injury. Looking forward, we are excited to be in the upcoming Wyvern Combination League Challenge Cup quarter-final in a couple of weeks, our first at adult level.

Good luck to the First Team tonight and huge congratulations to Tom Killick, managing his 800th game; a fantastic achievement.

NICK HUTCHINGS Nick joined The Magpies in December 2018 on a non-contract basis. Nick was previously with Poole Town, whom he had been with for eight years, and he had made over 330 appearances for The Dolphins. He was a key member of the side who gained promotion from The Wessex League to The National South, including winning The Southern League Premier Division Championship in the 2015-16 season. Nick has also played for Hamworthy United and Wimborne Town.

KINGSLEY LATHAM Kingsley has signed on a season long loan from parent club Southampton’s Academy, where he now has a professional contract, having previously been with Yeovil Town and Torquay United.

BRENNAN CAMP Brennan had joined The Magpies on a youth loan from AFC Bournemouth, and has had previous experience with Poole Town and Weymouth.

ROSS CARMICHAEL Ross is a centre back who has resigned for the forthcoming season, after a successful first season with The Magpies, when he was arguably our best defender on a consistent basis, having previously played for Arlesford Town and Portland United where he was a member of their successful Sydenhams Wessex League Championship in season 2016/17.

KYLE EGAN Kyle returned to the club on a six month loan from his parent club Exeter City last season, having previously had a loan spell with The Magpies the previous season, but, having been released by The Grecians, has now signed for The Magpies. Kyle was The East Devon Young Player of the Season in 2015/16, and made his professional debut in August 2016 against Hartlepool United, and was also an unused substitute against Port Vale and Luton Town. Kyle has also captained The Grecians’ FA Youth Cup side.

SAM JACKSON Sam is a left wing-back who has joined The Magpies on a dual registration with Wessex Premier club Bashley, with whom he has been a regular performer this season, having made twenty-two appearances, and has scored four goals. In addition to Bashley, Sam has also played at Weymouth.

NEIL MARTIN Initially joined The Magpies in August 2009, and was a consistent performer, before leaving the club to join Poole Town in November 2013. He subsequently joined neighbours Weymouth before deciding to re-join The Magpies prior to season 2015/16. Neil is a skilful, versatile player who can play either at left back or left wing back. Previously

with Exeter City and Salisbury City, he played twenty games for Hayes & Yeading in their promotion season, 2008/09, from The Conference South. Neil has now made over three hundred first team appearance for The Magpies, and has scored ten goals to date.

CALLUM ROSE Callum initially joined The Magpies on loan from his parent club Plymouth Argyle last season, and made his debut against Basingstoke Town in The FA Trophy. Callum has spent time at Aston Villa’s Academy, and played local junior football, before joining Argyle’s Academy in the 2014-15 season. Callum played in The Pilgrims Youth Alliance League and South West Peninsula League successes, and was an unused substitute for Argyle’s FA Cup Third Round replay against Liverpool the season before last. He then signed his first professional contract with Argyle, but having now been released by The Pilgrims has decided to sign for The Magpies for the new campaign.

TOM BLAIR Tom is a midfield player, who joined The Magpies prior to the 2016/17 season, having previously been a member of The Southampton Academy from ages 8- 11, and he had also played for Bridport prior to joining The Magpies. Tom has become a regular fixture in the first team squad for the past two seasons, making 78 appearances and scoring 9 goals.

ANTONIO DIAZ Following his spell with The Magpies on a work experience loan from parent club AFC Bournemouth last season, Antonio has re-joined The Magpies once again, after a spell with Weymouth at the start of the current season. Antonio had been released by AFC Bournemouth at the end of last season, having been with The Cherries since he was eight years old, and had appeared for them at both U18 and U21 levels, and he is the son of former Magpies’ legend Tony Diaz.

HARRY KITE Harry is a midfield player who has joined The Magpies on a six month loan arrangement from his parent club Exeter City, having first joined the Devon club’s academy at U9. He has made one first team appearance to date for The Grecians, and is under contract with them until June 2019. Harry is a good passer of the ball, and has an energetic work rate.

BILLY LOWES Billy signed for The Magpies prior to last season, having previously been with Weymouth. Billy has also had spells in the academies of AFC Bournemouth and Yeovil Town, and he then joined Poole Town where he won The Young Player of the Year award before he had loan spells with Wincanton Town and AFC Totton.

DOM PANESAR-DOWER Dom is a talented, pacey right sided midfield player who joined The Magpies prior to last season, having previously played for Weymouth, with whom he made his Southern Premier League debut the previous season, and also Poole Town. In his youth days Dom was selected to represent Great Britain Colleges, and played in two warm up matches in the UK ahead of an international tournament in Italy.

AARON RODRIGUEZ Aaron has now signed for The Magpies, having spent a previous period with us last season on loan from Weymouth. Aaron had joined Weymouth from Gillingham Town in the summer of 2016, having previously played for Frome Town. Aaron is renowned as a tricky player, who adds a new dimension to the team.

LUKE WINSPER Luke initially joined The Magpies on a dual registration basis from Sydenham Wessex League side Blackfield & Langley last season. He was with neighbours Weymouth for a number of seasons prior to that, during which time he progressed through the youth and reserve teams before breaking into the first team on a regular basis during the 2013-14 season. Unfortunately Luke was then plagued by injuries, which hindered his progress, and which led to his departure from Weymouth. He subsequently signed for Blackfield & Langley, where he played regularly again, having regained full fitness, and he has now resigned for The Magpies for the new campaign.

BEN MORRIS Ben is a local lad, who has progressed through The Magpies’ reserve side last season, and had now joined the first team squad, and has featured in the pre-season friendlies. Now on dual registration with Bridport.

ASHLEY POPE Ash is a striker, who joined The Magpies last season on a work experience basis from AFC Bournemouth, having been with The Cherries for six years. He has gained previous experience with Wimborne Town, Kingwood Town and Poole Borough, and has decided to re-join The Magpies for the coming season. Currently on dual registration with Christchurch.

BEN SEYMOUR Ben is a striker, who has joined The Magpies on loan from his parent club Exeter City for three months, and made his debut in The FA Trophy tie at Yate Town. Ben signed a professional contract with The Grecians in April 2018, and has spent previous loan spells with Gloucester City and Bideford.

POOLE TOWN FC

Founded in 1880, Dorchester Town Football Club participated in The Dorset League from 1896 to 1947, and The Western League between 1947 and 1972, before joining The Southern League, where they remained until gaining entry into the newly formed Football Conference South in 2004. They were relegated back into The Southern League in 2014.

The Magpies won the Championship of The Dorset League in 1937/38, and the Championship of The Western League in 1954/55.

After joining The Southern League in 1972 the early years were a struggle, and it was not until season 1977/78 that the Club first tasted success, when they finished as runners up to Margate in Division One (South) and were promoted into The Premier Division. At the end of the following season, after a difficult campaign, The Alliance League (now the Conference) was formed, and The Magpies found themselves back in the reformed Southern Division.

Dorchester then celebrated their centenary by winning the Championship of Division One (South) in 1979/80, by a one-point margin over Aylesbury. Relegated from The Premier Division at the end of the 1983/84 season, following a severe financial crisis, they only just avoided dropping out of the League in season 1985/86. However, a remarkable transformation was achieved, and Dorchester returned to The Premier Division as Champions at the end of the following season.

For most of the seasons that they were back in The Premier Division, Dorchester were a mid-table team but season 1997/98 saw The Magpies achieve their highest ever Premier Division placing when they finished in fourth place, but the next two seasons were very disappointing, with relegation only just being avoided on both occasions and in 2001 The Magpies lost The Premier Division place that they had held for fourteen seasons. The Magpies threatened to regain their Premier Division status in their first season in The Eastern Division, but finished in third place behind Champions Hastings Town and Runners Up Grantham Town, however they achieved their objective the following season, when after a fine campaign, with only five defeats, the Club returned to The Premier Division as Champions.

In season 2003/04 Dorchester won The Southern League end of season play off competition, defeating Bath City in the Semi-Final and Tiverton Town in the Final, played at Exeter City’s St. James Park, to gain entry to the newly formed Conference South. Following their elevation to the Conference regional division, apart from the first two, and seasons 2011/12 and 2012/13, they invariably struggled in the lower half of the table, but in season 2012/13 The Magpies finished in their highest position, when they attained eighth place, which was a great achievement for the small market town of Dorchester with a population of 19,000. Sadly season 2013/14 was a nightmare campaign, and The Magpies finished rock bottom, and were relegated back into The Southern League Premier Division, where they initially struggled to “stop the rot”, but results improved following a managerial change at the turn of the year, and Dorchester ended the season safe from the threat of another relegation in seventeenth place in the final league table. The Magpies position in The SPL was consolidated the following season when they finished in thirteenth position.Season 2016 – 17 was another difficult season, and relegation was just avoided with a draw on the last day of the season, and last season saw the club make a difficult start, before another managerial change resulted in fortunes improving, and a finishing position of nineteenth was achieved comfortably avoiding any threat of relegation. The Magpies have enjoyed significant success in cup competitions over the years, and have reached The Second Round Proper of the FA Cup on four occasions, including the fine achievement in season 2012 – 13 when they eliminated Sky Bet League Two side Plymouth Argyle in The First Round Proper at The

DORCHESTER TOWN FC HISTORY DORCHESTER TOWN FC HISTORY

Avenue Stadium, a game which was televised live on ESPN, and the first time The Magpies had eliminated a Football League side. However they were then knocked out in the next round by Luton Town at Kenilworth Road. The most recent run to The Second Round Proper, prior to 2012, was in 1981, when they lost to AFC Bournemouth after a replay, before a crowd of 8700 at Dean Court. Previously they had played York City and Plymouth Argyle, at that same stage of the competition, both in the 1950’s. They have also reached The First Round Proper on six other occasions, with their opponents being Norwich City, QPR, and Port Vale, again all in the 1950’s, Gloucester City in 1989 - 90, Oxford United in 1995 - 96, and finally in 2000 - 01 when Wigan Athletic were the opposition at The JJB Stadium, when The Magpies went down 3-1 after a fine display.

In the FA Trophy The Magpies have twice reached the last sixteen, firstly in 1971 - 72 when they lost to the holders Telford United after a replay, and then again in 1996 - 97 losing to eventual winners Woking.

The Magpies, then in the Eastern Division, won the Southern League Cup competition in season 2001 - 02, convincingly defeating then Premier Division King’s Lynn by an aggregate score of 4-0 in the two leg Final. Prior to that Dorchester’s most successful season in that competition was 1991 - 92 when they finished as runners up to Dover Athletic. Previously they reached the semi-finals in 1981 - 82 when they lost to Wealdstone, and they reached the same stage again in 1998 - 99 when they were defeated by Cambridge City.

Dorchester have won the Dorset Senior Cup on twelve occasions, the most recent being season 2011 - 2012 when Wimborne Town were beaten in the Final played at the County Ground at Hamworthy.

Dorchester moved to their current ground, The Avenue Stadium in August 1990, which is literally a few yards down the road from their old home. The ground stands on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, and Prince Charles, in his role as Duke of Cornwall, took an active interest in its design, making a number of private visits during construction, before officially opening the ground on the 20th November 1991. A Tesco supermarket has been built on the Club’s previous ground, which they had occupied since 1929. The highest attendance for a league game at The Avenue Stadium is 4129 for the match against Weymouth on the 1st January 1999, although the stadium capacity is 5009, with seating for 710.

In May 2013 Chairman Shaun Hearn transferred half of his majority shareholding in the club to the Community Trust, with the commitment to see D.T.F.C become fully community owned, a process which was completed in 2015. This has introduced an entirely new business model to the club, which now needs to run in a sustainable manner in order to protect its long-term future. This is a daunting, but exciting, venture, which should bring long-term benefits to both the club and the wider community as they become more closely involved with each other. Supporters can now have a real say in how D.T.F.C. is run by the new Board of Directors, for the first time in its history it is truly OUR club.

KIDS & COMMUNITY

I’m delighted to announce that this week we have launched a new website, ptfckids.co.uk, which will be dedicated to the promotion of the Club’s work with local kids and the wider community. The website follows the launch earlier in the year of our bi-annual Community Newsletter and our Kids Initiative.

The Kids Initiative is growing and evolving and is now attracting interest from a number of sponsors. We continue to engage with more and more local children’s charities and schools with offers to them of free tickets, free coaching places and fund raising support.

I am very grateful for the considerable help and support from Alex Pike, our Commercial Manager and Dick Thomas, our General Manager. Together we have many ideas in the pipeline for forthcoming events which will include match days dedicated to members, past and present, of our armed forces as well as an NHS day amongst others. We have

Soccer Schools planned for 2019, free ticket offers for local families and hopefully a major 2 day football tournament open to youth teams across the area.

Last, but not least, we have a section on the site for the 30 or so of our teams that play below the first team. We are extremely proud of our youth, ladies, ability counts and walking football teams and we will endeavour to keep visitors up to date with news from all of them.

If you would like us to keep you updated with all our latest news and offers please sign up to our newsletter on the site and we will keep you posted.

With best wishes
