British ValuesWe elected a new school council! The Year 1 and Year 2 children each decided why they would want to be on the school council and shared their ideas with their peers. We then cast our votes in secret, they went in the ballot box and a democratic result was achieved.

Forest SchoolsEvery Friday Maple Class spend timetabled lesson time in forest schools area. They learn the value of where they live and the impact the weather and environment has on the way we live. The children thoroughly enjoy the time spent outside learning about how to look after the garden, wildlife and building shelters and bug hotels. It allows children to reflect on the wider world and we are guardians of the planet with a responsibility to keep it safe for generations to come.

Big Idea afternoonsOur Big Idea topics give us opportunity to regularly run themed afternoons approximately once a term. Families are invited into school and afternoon reflects the chosen topic. Parents are invited into the classroom to see what their child is learning in school and we showcase the children’s learning.Examples of what we have held in the past are Alice in wonderland themed tea parties, forest school afternoons where the children and parents could cook pancakes on the campfire and medieval banquets.

Charity EventsThe school gets involved in national charity days such as Sport Relief, Children in Need and Comic Relief. Special assemblies and curriculum content is linked to the fundraising. Children in the school council often take responsibility for designing the fundraising theme and organising events. We pride ourselves in everyone being involved to ensure they are successful, enjoyable days.

Eco WarriorsIn KS1 we have representatives from the Eco Team. They are currently ensuring that every class reuses, recycles and reduces paper waste. They are aware of the impact on the earth that humans can have. They have reflected on how we all need to take responsibility for the planet.

We have a display in Maple class which tells us all about the importance of recycling.

Feelings BoardThe children in key stage 1 are actively encouraged to express their feelings and worries through the feelings board. The children put their leaf on Happy/worried/upset and the staff will use this as an indication of how they are feeling. The staff will then find an opportunity to discuss what is troubling the child. This has created a climate of trust. It has allowed the children to open up. To develop the sense that the adults in the class are there to care about them and nurture them, to have a better understanding of them. It also alerts the children to others around them who maybe unhappy. We foster an atmosphere in the class where the children themselves play a part in encouraging their peers.
