W e are approaching that time in the Jewish

celebrate the festival of Purim. Make a note in your diary

to get into your costume and come along to KLS on

Sunday 24 February for an afternoon of merriment. See

Dear KLS member

T his is my 26th Word from the

Chair. My word is the Business

of excess, bull and best (man). The

“Three Bs”. (Yes I know I used some

different Bs in November 2012!)

The Business of excess

I enjoyed a recent visit between

Xmas and New Year with the family

to Las Vegas. It’s a place that shouts

“more is more”. It’s in the desert.

The central bit consists largely of

about 20 massive hotels, each

about 400 metres wide. Some have

five swimming pools. The art gallery

at the Bellagio Hotel had 12 original

Monets. There’s another hotel with

a volcano, one with a dolphin and

rare lions zoo, another with a lake,

another with a golf course and so

on. We had a meal in Las Vegas in a

Mexican restaurant, located by a

“Venetian” canal.

It’s also rather a Jewish place.

Several of the biggest developers,

like Wynn are Jewish, as is the ex

king of timeshare, David Siegel.

There’s a documentary about him

and his wife aiming to build the

largest private house in the USA. A

visit to the Mob Attraction, an

interactive attraction, shows that

many of the gangsters were also

Jewish. I also saw the biggest classic

car collection in the world, located

in a hotel.

Bull

There’s a lot going on in the field of

PR and reputation. A lot of press

relations is really about managing

reputation. That is, avoiding bad

news, rather than promoting good

news.

It was interesting to see the

response of Google, Amazon and

Starbucks to the revelation that

they paid little UK corporation tax,

whilst acting legally. Starbucks

made a voluntary offer to pay

more; the other two didn’t. There’s

now pressure to behave better than

that demanded by law.

I always like the expression S.H.I.T.

Perhaps it should follow “bull”. It

stands for sincerity, honesty,

integrity and trust. One of the

problems is that there is such a

collapse of trust in politicians,

banks, and others that it takes time

to achieve anything.

I was once interim Director of

Integrity (yes I was) for a major

government enterprise. One of my

concerns was getting them to check

that something was possible

before, and not after they had

promised it.

Best Man

I have always been puzzled about

the idea of the best man at

weddings. Why doesn’t the bride

marry him if he is the best? I was

reminded of this by the rather

splendid wedding I recently

attended at the Savoy Hotel. We

have orthodox friends with three

daughters, one of whom wanted a

full Jewish wedding, with some 300

guests.

It was rather spectacular. The

service had a well known Rabbi,

Cantor and choir, then a

champagne reception with sushi,

mini foods and unlimited drink.

We then went into the ball room

for dinner and dancing. There was a

lot of dancing, before the food and

between each course. The band

were about 15 people and rather

good. Everyone or nearly everyone

joined in the dancing. (Vanessa had

until that point only ever danced

with me once. On the day I met her.

I dance so badly that she refused

ever again. Until at this wedding. )

WORD FROM THE CHAIR

continued from page 2

I had the following thoughts:

What an exuberant and lively

occasion!

So many people were dancing

that nobody noticed my poor

attempts!

Lots of cameras – everyone

wants to record everything

these days!

And the best man? He

introduced his speech in this

way:

“They couldn’t decide who should

be the best man

They asked the best looking man

Then they asked the funniest

Then the most caring

Then they asked me

I said yes, you asked me three

times already”

I liked

The leopard also behaved

perfectly reasonably, really. She

was understandably peeved when

he jumped from a ledge and

landed almost on top of the

startled creature. She took a bit

out of his bum, “more in shock

than anger”. He then gave her a

punch on the snout, and she ran

off. Soon after he made it to the

park warden’s hut, bleeding

copiously. The warden, an old

friend, looked at him. “You know

you’re not allowed to feed animals

in a national park.”

Ivory, Apes and Peacocks. Animals,

Adventure and Discovery in the Wild Places of

Africa. Alan Root

My son is having a gap life.

(Not merely a gap year.)

And finally

Carpe Diem – seize the carpet

present. At this place. And at this

moment.” Rabbi Susie Boyt, Financial Times,

Shabbat Chats—Temporary

Organiser Needed

This discussion group needs a temporary

organiser. Would you like to help out?

Please contact Helen In The Office.

Try the KLS Choir

The KLS Choir rehearses once or twice a

month (and enjoy tea, cake and chat!), and

sings at the monthly choral service on the

4th Friday of the month and at other services.

You don’t have to read music, you don’t have

to read Hebrew. Come and try it! Singing is a

great way to meet people, blow away life’s

cobwebs, contribute to KLS, learn about our

prayers and about Jewish music.

Interested? Contact

Sandra Webber via the

KLS office. Next rehearsal

is on Tuesday 12

February at 8 pm.

Our new caretaker—Darron Gelder

Some of you have already met our new part-

time caretaker and handyman, Darron Gelder.

Darron will be opening up on Saturdays, and

undertaking other caretaking duties as and

when we require them, and to fit around his

“day job”.

This arrangement is on a trial basis, and will be

reviewed in April 2013. If your group has

requirements for furniture set up or other

caretaking, please let Helen In The Office know

in good time so that it can be organised with

Darron.

Director of Music Sought

KLS is looking for a new Director of Music – can

you help? KLS is advertising for a part-time

Director of Music. If you know someone who

you think could do a good job then please alert

them. Further details and application forms can

be requested from the KLS office

([email protected] or 020 8398 7400).

Closing date for applications 28 February 2013.

Candle Lighting, Friday Evening Kiddush

and Yahrtzeits

Would you like to light the candles during the Friday

evening service? Or bring a cake or some biscuits for

the kiddush after the service?

We would like to involve every member in the

services at KLS – please don’t wait to be asked. No

previous experience is necessary, and there will be

Old Hands around to guide you through.

If you would like to add a loved one to the Yahrtzeit

calendar, please let us know. Please contact Helen In

The Office, or Norman Hyman specifically about

candle lighting and Yahrtzeits.

Local Kosher Food

Our Chair informs us Sainsbury’s in Surbiton has

Jewish/kosher food. They have chopped liver and

viennas on one aisle and matzos and sweet

cucumbers in another. There are about 50 items in

total. They are not well signposted and people

may need to ask.

Waitrose in Wimbledon is stocking a selection of

kosher food – please support this initiative to

encourage them to keep it going. You can get

kosher food at many other local supermarkets – let

Helen In The Office know and it will go into the

bulletin.

Don’t forget Tony’s Deli in West Wimbledon

(Raynes Park to the rest of us!) also stocks kosher

food, and that is where most of our lovely challah

loaves come from thanks to Judy Royle. LJ Shabbaton in Eastbourne
