Family Of The Month

December’s Family of the Month Award is given to a Brother Knight, and his Lady for their continued service and support to the Church, our Council and our community.

Our Brother and his son have been annual volunteers at many of the Knights of Columbus sponsored events throughout the year. Working as a team they have participated in the Madison County Fair at the food stand, the Lenten fish fry dinners, the Kirchenfest, and more.

This year our Brother Knight and his son were the last two workers to come in from their stations at the Intellectual Dis-abilities fund-raiser. Upon ar-riving at the KC Hall after working the afternoon shift, they decided to stay to see if they had accomplished the goal they had set for themselves. When the counting was fin-ished they had netted over one hundred dollars and quickly gave each other a ‘high-five’ upon learning that they were successful in doing so.

While their daughter is away at school, continuing to learn to be the best she can be, his Lady continues to assist with making desserts for the various KC sponsored fundraisers such as the chicken dinner, participat-ing in parade events, attending weekly Masses and working at the St. Joseph Hospital. Their son is very active in the local Boy Scouts where he is learning valuable skills and being all he can be. Their names are Brad, Julie, Adrianna and Cody and, it is with deep appreciation that we have selected the family of Brad and Julie Jakel as Decem-ber 2015’s Family of the Month. Congratulations, from Council 1580.

Senior Knight Of The Month

December’s Senior Knight of the Month Award goes to a Brother Knight for his con-tinued support and service to Church, Council, and Com-munity.

Our Brother is a longtime member with almost 50 years of continuous service to Council 1580 and over 40 years of ser-vice to the 4th Degree Assembly 0231.

Over the years we have found this Brother Knight grinning as he works at many Knights of Columbus sponsored fund-raisers and events including Schweizerfest, Kirchenfest,

Madison County Fair and the chicken Dinner as part of the set-up crew. Our Brother works reg-ularly with the KC Bingo teams and gladly fills in for players leaving for short periods. He participates in the Living Rosary and is a member of the funeral home visitation group.

This Brother Knight partic-ipates in Perpetual Adoration at St. Joseph Hospital Chapel and also serves Mass there on Wednesdays. He participates in the Relay for Life and Autism speaks. He was a Lay Francis-can of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis and a volunteer for Pastoral Care at the hospital. He is a member of the Cursillo movement.

Our Brother exhibits his patriotism by raising and lower-ing the American Flag at Faith Countryside Nursing home almost every day.

It is with great honor that we have selected Vernon Rakers as the December 2015 Senior Knight of the Month. Congratu-lations from Council 1580.

Knight Of The Month

We have selected as De-cember’s Knight of the Month, a Brother Knight who pro-vides service and support to the Church, our Community and the Knights of Columbus Council.

Our Brother is a newer mem-ber of the Knights of Columbus and has hit the ground running. After joining Council 1580 in October of last year, he has worked many of our sponsored events.

We found this Brother Knight working the Chicken Frying Stand at the Kirchenfest, the sausage dinner and he also worked the Intellectual Disabil-ities fundraiser as well. Our Brother Knight is the recip-ient of the Knights of Columbus Shining Armor Award.

This award is given to a Brother Knight who within his first year of fraternal service is able to satisfy the following criteria:

1. Work on three council service programs.

2. Attend at least three coun-cil business meetings.

3. Receive his third degree.4. Meet with council Insur-

ance Representative.5. Recruit one new member.Locally, he is also active in

the scouting program where as Cub Master of Pack 4040, he provides quality leadership and is a positive influence on the lives of many young scouts.

It is with deep appreciation that we have selected Brian Comish as our Knight of the Month for December 2015. Congratulations from Council 1580.

4Th Degree News

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

It is amazing what makes your day. This evening I had one of the many privileges

that come with being the Faithful Navigator. I signed the membership cards for the next year. As I was signing the cards, memories of my father flooded my mind. He was a Faithful Nav-igator of Edwardsville Assembly 0225 many years ago and I am sure he sat there one evening and signed all of the 4th Degree member’s cards.

My father worked hard all of his life to ensure that his wife and children had lives and characters that would provide for us throughout our lives. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, his parish, community, and the Boy Scouts.

Why do I bring this up? Because, everyone has con-fusion in their life from time to time but taking time to slow down and remember the blessings that you live with each day helps clear that confusion. We can easily be depressed by what has not gone “our” way recently. In looking at the long term we will usually find that our lives have a majority of blessings. With Family and Friends we accomplish much.

Valentine’s Day Dinner/DanceDon’t forget the Valentine’s Dinner planned for

February 14th, 2016. Plan a great evening with your significant other.

At our last Assembly meeting it was approved that all current Highland Assembly members will be compen-sated for one meal. You will be required to pay $25.00 for your significant other.

I hope this will encourage more members to attend and enjoy an evening with fellow 4th Degree Members. 3rd Degree members expecting to become 4th Degree member on February 27th, 2016 are also invited to this dinner.

Exemplification to 4th DegreeThe annual Exemplification at the National Shrine of

Our Lady of the Snows will be hosted by the Edwards-ville Assembly.

The ceremony will be at Belleville on February 27th, 2016. Any 3rd Degree Knights that would like to become members of the 4th degree are asked to contact Herb Durbin at (618) 654-6754 for an application.

Sincerely, Herb Durbin Jr.Faithful Navigator

Think You Are Too Old for Coverage? Maybe Not

You are never too young or too old to consider purchas-ing life insurance. If you have a financial need for coverage, or will in the future, a permanent life insurance policy can be just the thing you need.

When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same policies when you are older.

If you’ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80, and in 2014, the issue age of our term insurance was extended to age 70. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so underwriting standards for risk and age apply. But, the extensions are a great blessing for me – and it could be for you too. Now I can help members that I couldn’t help before. Are you or one of your brother knights one of those members?

Whether you’re 18 or 80, the Knights of Columbus has products that will work for you and your family. I look forward to discussing coverage with you.

Need A Place To Party?HIGHLAND - Whether you

have 75 or 500 people coming to your party, the Knights of Co-lumbus have the perfect place to hold your event.

Their banquet center located at 12454 Highway 143, just across from Wal-Mart has a great dance floor, a full kitchen and bar, and spacious bath-rooms.

Grand Knights MessageAgain it is that time of year to look back and give thanks for all

of the blessings that have been bestowed upon us. As mentioned at the annual Christmas Party and awards dinner, I am genuinely appreciative of all the efforts that you the membership put to-ward the many charitable fundraising events sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 1580. Soon we will ring in the New Year with another full slate of activities. I would like to congratulate all of the monthly service award winners throughout the year along with this year’s annual award recipients – Derek Burns, Knight of the Year, Martin Klostermann, Senior Knight of the Year, Paula Rehkemper, Lady of the Year, and the Dan Kapp family as Family of the Year.

Many thanks go out to Blake Korte and the Mater Dei High School Jazz Combo as they provided our Christmas Party audience with some wonderful Christmas music and jazz tunes. All of the jazz band members played improvised riffs and jazz solos and there was even some “call and response” taking place between the tenor and alto saxophones. All who attended the Christmas party were very entertained. Also, I would like to thank our resident DJ Mr. Charley Luber for playing his Christmas music for the first half of our evening. Charley created a perfect ambiance for the annual event. I also would like to thank everyone who participated in decorating the hall and setting up for the party and a special thank you to Harmony Kapp and her friend Michael for monitoring the coat room.

Looking ahead in the not so distant future we see an opportunity for service at our annual Chicken Dinner on January 24th. This year we will be featuring a carryout only concept for the dinner, however eating in will be an option as well. The bar will be open and the TV will be on. The carry out station will be set up in the small meeting room. Please be sure and check the workers list displayed in this edition of the newsletter. If you do not see your name on the list and you are available to assist, please feel free to come out and lend a hand.

Please mark your calendars for February 21st, 2016 for this year’s Bishop’s Dinner annual fundraiser. Information letters and enrollment forms are being mailed out the first week of January. This is our council’s primary fundraising event to provide resourc-es to 23 seminarians, Newman Centers, and Pro-Life Activities. Please be sure to take a look at this year’s letter carefully as there is important information regarding the event therein. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to the editors of our monthly newsletter namely, Herb Durbin, Chris Chalfant and Bill Napper. With the efforts of these fellow Brother Knights, we are able to continue to provide readers with important information presented in a most professional manner. Thanks guys!

May you all have a very Blessed and Happy New Year!Joe Wetmore, Grand Knight Council 1580
