The month of September has been full of many activities. We held our annual Labor Day Picnic, Sunday Pancake Breakfast, a Second Degree Exemplification, and we had the annual Parish Festival. Program Director’s Report

By Ed Barrier, Deputy Grand Knight Dear Brother Knights, Here is a spiritual thought from the Book of Ecclesiastes: “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity in our hearts, except that no one can fathom the work that God does from beginning to end. I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives.” Ecclesiastes 3:11-12

Insurance Agent’s Report David Farebrother, Field Agent

Knights of Columbus on Line If you haven’t visited the Knights of Columbus web site in a while, I encourage you to do so the next time you’re online. There are many exciting features on www.kofc.org, but there are two that I wish to make you especially aware of. When you get to the home page, click on the button for “Insurance”. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson will welcome you and give you a short introduction you to our highly-rated insurance program. The first feature I’d like to call your attention to is our member testimonial area, titled “Stages of Life.” In this multi-media area, six real-life stories are told – stories of people at different stages of their lives. Chances are one of them will sound a lot like you. These people talk about how their Knights of Columbus agent took the time to demonstrate for them the need for life insurance in their lives. I’ll be happy to do that for you and your family as well. The second item is our Life Insurance Calculator. This handy, easy-to-use online tool was developed to allow you, in about 15-20 minutes to estimate the amount of life insurance coverage you need. The information you’ll be asked to provide will be basic (the type most folks would tend to have at their fingertips), and secure (it’s intended to be used solely for the purposes of the online calculator – the Order won’t capture it or share it with anyone, including me! All information is automatically deleted as soon as you leave the site). I stress that the numbers you’ll receive are estimates, based on the basic information you provide. It’s not intended to take the place of the free, professional needs analysis that I’ll be happy to provide for you and your family.

Give me a call – I’d like to meet with you. Fraternally

Rev. Joy Lawrence Santos Hails from Philippines,

Among 80 Filipino Priests Serving in LA Archdiocese

Pictured: Rev. Joy Lawrence L. Santos.

By Joe T. Kovach,

KC Member Since 1996 Rev. Joy Lawrence L. Santos, native of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, came to the United States in June 2006. Before coming to St. Raphael Parish, Father Santos served as Associate Pastor at Our Lady of the Valley Church, Canoga Park (2006-09) and St. Genevieve Church, Panorama City (July 2009-June 2010). In the Philippines, Father Lawrence served in several assignments since his ordination on October 26, 1991 at St. Louis Beltran Church by the Most Reverend Miguel Puruganan, D.D. His celebrated his first Mass the next day in the same church. Some of his assignments have included: * Parochial Vicar - St. Vincent Parish (1991); * Parish Priest at St. Joseph Parish (1993-97); * Pastor - St. Mark's Parish (2000-06); * Chancellor of the Diocese of Bayombong and Secretary to the Bishop, Most Rev. Ramon B. Villena, D.D. 1997-2000); * Vocation Director of the Diocese of Bayombong (1997-2003); * Diocesan Schools Superintendent (2003-06); * Episcopal Vicar (2000-06). Father Santos joined the Knights of Columbus in 2008 when he was assigned as Associate Pastor at Our Lady of the Valley Church . He is a Third

Degree member of the Msgr. John J. Hurley Knights of Columbus Council 3601, of which he was co-chaplain for a year. "There are about 80-85 Filipino priests who are serving in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles," stated Fr. Santos. He added, "A number of them are serving as administrators and pastors in the different parishes." His parents, Manuel P. Santos, Sr. (deceased) and Jesusa L. Santos, are proud parents of their five sons and one daughter. They have all lived in the Philippines though a brother, Marlon, resides with his family in the San Fernando Valley. As a youngster Fr. Santos graduated in a Catholic School both in Elementary and High School in Solano. He started to seriously think about the priesthood when he was in his third year in high school. Father noted, "I joined the "Searchers Club," composed of young boys who were discerning about their vocation in life. I became interested to enter the seminary when a group of seminarians visited our school for vocation campaign." He was active in the church as an Altar Server since fourth grade. He entered the seminary in 1980 at the age of 16 at St. Francis Xavier for his orientation year. Then he attended San Pablo Seminary, a college seminary, earning a degree in Philosophy and finally at the Immaculate Conception School of Theology. Father explained, "Every summer vacation during our seminary years, we would have our apostolate, which was part of our ministerial training in the different parishes in our diocese of Bayombong." Father proclaimed, "We were 16 in our class when we got ordained as Deacons (transitional diaconate), after which we got ordained in our own respective archdioceses and dioceses in the northern region of the Philippines." Responding to 'What stands out as his most memorable experience as a priest,' Father enumerated, "My chance to work closely with my bishop in our diocese when I was appointed as Chancellor-Treasurer of the diocese and likewise as his Secretary. It gave me a sense of ministering not just in a single parish, but in the whole diocese." Some of his main goals he has been able to accomplish since his ordination include: * To be able to work and minister to the people of God wherever I was assigned was an achievement in

Page 5: Knightline 10 2010kc5300.org/docs/knightline/2010/knightline_201010.pdf · Here is a spiritual thought from the Book of Ecclesiastes: “He has made everything beautiful in its time

itself; * I just have to be present to and available for them - how they touched my life and somehow how I touched their lives in a significant and meaningful way, as we continue building a participative community of Christ's disciples. His immediate goal is to be available to the people of God wherever he is and share the gift of the priesthood as he ministers to them. He stated, "At this time, I just wish to be a co-worker with the pastor, Father Bruce, in shepherding the parish community." Father's answer to 'What are the keys to your success as a priest, pastor, associate pastor.' was expressed thusly..."The fundamental key is being aware always of who I am as a person and as a priest who is called by God to serve. The Lord has given me the gift of the priesthood, so as a good steward, I have to share it through my ministry in the church with great gratitude and devotion. And I can only do much by God's grace. Thus, I have to be grounded in prayer and the Word of God." Father reflected, "Whenever somebody asks me about St. Raphael's Church, whether he is a priest or a layperson, I would answer spontaneously that it is a very beautiful parish community. The place is cold and serene, but the people are very warm and nice." His practical advice to the youth of the parish concerning their Faith was summed up thusly, "Perhaps I would say what Pope Benedict said in his message for the coming 2011 World Youth Day, "Be rooted and grounded in the Word of God." "I would enjoin them to get involved in the Life Teen program of the parish which is certainly doing a great service to our young people in the parish," added Father Lawrence. Father's response to the question, 'Do you see a vision of a healthier Catholic Community in our area shaped by the Gospel message of God’s love for all people?' was summarized, "Certainly we need to have a vision of a continually growing Catholic Community - not just in quantity but the quality of living our Faith most especially. We need to continue to be a witnessing Faith Community that is constantly nourished and shaped by the Gospel." Father's favorite scriptural passage in the Bible is from the Gospel of John (3:16) - "For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, so that

whoever believes in Him may have eternal life." His recommendation for 'seniors' in their twilight years is "that they continue to live life with grace and love in their hearts. God loves them so dearly." He added, "Father Bruce certainly mentioned to me that there are many beautiful and wonderful seniors in the parish." Having lived in the Philippines for 43-years Father Santos detailed this reporter's three special quesitons: Q: The Philippines are heavily influenced by the Catholic spirituality of colonial Spain, which ruled the islands for four centuries. This means Mary and the infant Jesus are key figures. Please explain how this came about? A: The Church in the Philippines is very Marian. The Filipinos have a very strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, which they bring with them wherever they go, like here in the U.S. Every region in the Philippines has a particular and special Marian devotion under a distinct tutelage. In our region in the Cagayan Valley for example, we have the Our Lady of Piat, whose miraculous image would be brought on special occasions, to the different parishes and dioceses, for veneration. The image was also brought here in the U.S. The devotion to the Santo Nino (Child Jesus) is also prevalent among Filipinos. You can see the image of the Santa Nino in many churches and also in business establishments. Q: Could you explain briefly about the Feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia? A: The devotion to The Our Lady of Penafrancia, which had its origin in Spain, is widely observed in the Philippines especially in the Bicol region, where the Lady under this title is the patroness. The miraculous image, as lots of healings and miracles were attributed to her, is enshrined at the Basilica Minore in Naga City. The Festival in honor of Our Lady of Penafrancia is celebrated every third Sunday of September. It is characterized by processions with the image, together with the image of the Divino Rostro (Holy Face), carried by barefooted male voyadores around the city towards the Cathedral. Its highlight is a fluvial parade where the image is ridden in a pagoda accompanied by a battalion of men while the people shout "Viva La Virgen," after which a solemn celebration of the Mass follows. The devotion is also brought here in

the U.S., in which a celebration of this festival is being done every year in Los Angeles, organized by Filipino-Americans who came from the Bicol region. Q: Could you also give the background regarding the Feast of St. Lorenzo? A: San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila is the first Filipino saint who was martyred in Nagasaki, Japan, together with other martyrs. In 1636, he left the Philippines together with Dominican missionaries for Japan, where a wide scale persecution of Christians took place. Christians were jailed and hanged in the pit with the body hanged upside down until they die. When he was asked about his life as a Christian, he answered, "I am a Christian and I will remain a Christian even to the point of death. Only to God will I offer my life." These words are attributed to him: "Even if I had a thousand lives, I would still offer them to God." Thus when he refused to renounce his faith, he was hanged and died a martyr's death on September 23, 1637. St. Lorenzo Ruiz was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 18, 1987, together with 16 other companion martyrs. His feast is celebrated on September 28. Father Santos has seen the late Pope John Paul II during his two pastoral visits in the Philippines, first in 1981 and then in 1985 during the World Youth Day where the Pope had one of the biggest crowds to have gathered for his visit, which was estimated to be 10 million people. He had seen him again when Father went to Rome in 1996. Asked to describe himself to others regarding his God-given talents as a priest, pastor, associate pastor, Father answered, "I am just a simple priest, called by God to minister to His people. Whatever gifts I have, especially the gift of the priesthood, I share them with His people as I minister to them. I am a servant-shepherd who is called to serve and shepherd His people in whatever place the Lord sends me." Responding to 'What is the best way to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary as our spiritual Mother, Our Mother of the Church?' Father answered, "I think that the best way to honor our Blessed Mother is when our devotion to her leads us more closely to Jesus her Son. Our devotion to Mary should always lead us to a deeper relationship with Jesus. Praying the rosary, for example, should make us grow in our love not only for Mary but most especially for Jesus

as we grow in our faith in Him." In his near 19-years as a priest, Father Santos has solemnized hundreds of marriages and a lot of funerals. Father described his association with the Rectory staff, "The parish staff has been very kind and helpful to me, and showed great warmth when I came here to St. Raphael's. Father Bruce was truly welcoming and very accommodating as he gave me an orientation about the parish, together with Noel Fuentes. It has become easy for me to get acquainted and adjusted in the parish because of the help of the parish staff. I am greatly thankful to them." Father added, "Aside from the parish staff, a number of parishioners have shown their care and concern. Some Filipinos would bring Filipino food to the rectory. The Filipino association gave a welcome party for me." "If it helps in the evangelization of the parish community, why not," advocated Father Santos, about The Spirit parish newspaper being renovated and helpful for our large number of parishioners. It was published for 34-years but was dropped in 2004. Other short answers from Father Santos to the following: 1. Favorite class at the seminary? Liturgy; 2. Hardest class at the seminary? (Grand Knight’s Report, Continued from Page 1) Setup by PGK Felix & Julie Sanchez and PGK Raphael & Connie Cardenas made it possible that we all had nice tables to sit around to enjoy each other’s company. Vince Filippello for making sure we always have plenty of our favorite beverages, and ice cold. And thanks for last minute help go to PGK Bill McNamara for “tending the gate” as folks arrived and PGK Francisco & Maria Cabrera for making the final trip so we had refreshing ice cream to end our day. Special thanks to Felix, although officially “Retired” from running the Memorial & Labor Day Picnics, he still manages to make sure that all the details get taken care of. September 12th brought to St Raphael Parish the monthly Pancake Breakfast. Special thanks to our folks who make the effort to put this on each and every month. This includes organizer Jim Bradbury, with Patrick Donohoe, John & Cindy Peyton, Jose Meza, John McLafferty, Paul & Evelina Curzan, Joe Darga, and many others throughout the year. On September 13th, immediately following our regular Business Meeting, we hosted our first Second Degree in many years, conducted by a Second Degree team from Council 1684. There were a total of 9 Candidates present, 4 of which were from our Council. Congratulations go out to our newest Second Degree Knights: John McLafferty, Juan Morelos, Raphael Navarro, and Jeff Barkhorn.

In October, we have a Third Degree date coming up, down in the Ventura Area. As usual in September, our Council is very active in the St Raphael Parish Picnic too. This year, much of the organizing and planning was done by the leadership of Troop 105, Glenn Schiferl & Ed Leicht, both of whom are Knights of Columbus. Their focus to enliven the atmosphere, bring new vitality and activities and to rename the event to “St Raphael Parish Festival” was a resounding success! The Knights of Columbus were very visible in many of the activities throughout the Festival. We prepared and served our famous Tri-Tip sandwiches, lead by our Advocate Patrick Donohoe. He had a good crew behind him, Including Jim Bradbury, Tim Hogan, John McLafferty, PGK Frank & Cay Donohoe, PGK Mike & Mirtha Donovan, PGK Francisco Cabrera, and John Peyton. PGK Felix & Julie Sanchez and Marie Mackey hosted the Chili Cheese Nachos stand. Vince Filippello and John Kestel ran the Beer Garden in the Center, along with the help of Jim Abels, Esteban Valenzuela, Joe Lima, and Larry Torres. Sam Alfano took up a nice seat in the shade and displayed the available Christmas Cards we have, all the while sharing a table with our Treasurer Joe Darga, as he displayed a table for the “Gift of Life” campaign that he is well known around the community for. Finally, Bob Marks contributed his time during the Parish Festival toward getting more folks involved with the St. Joseph’s Prayer Group, which meets Wednesday evenings.

A few words from the Grand Knight regarding the

upcoming Election

By Mark Vampola, Grand Knight

Over the last month, there has been much controversy in the news about the building of a Mosque near “Ground Zero” in New York City. At the same time, there is a tremendous uproar, especially among conservatives, about the policies of the current Federal Administration and its “Social” policies and official stances. Here in California, we are facing an economic condition, worse than most of the rest of the nation: High unemployment; Taxation that is beginning to

Page 8: Knightline 10 2010kc5300.org/docs/knightline/2010/knightline_201010.pdf · Here is a spiritual thought from the Book of Ecclesiastes: “He has made everything beautiful in its time

unravel the middle-class; Notable corruption in many governing bodies and the list goes on. As a very conservative Republican myself, it probably isn’t too difficult to understand my feelings on many “political” subjects such as these. However, it isn’t my political affiliations that guide my thoughts and opinions, but more my Christian faith. In November, we will be asked to go to the polls and vote. We’ll be voting for things such as paying more taxes to build a prison, Gay/Lesbian rights, Marijuana legalization, Tourism taxes, Air Quality guidelines, and most notably, Officials to represent us locally, statewide, and at the federal level. As a Citizen, I have a duty to vote. As a Parent, I need to consider the safety and welfare of my family, and as a Catholic, I have to ask the Age-Old question, “WWJD”, “What Would Jesus, Do?” Do I vote my political party line; protect my investments and security; let the government do what they think is best? Obviously, each of these three choices alone is a poor choice! Reading through measures and propositions is easy enough (and time consuming). Electing officials is a very different story. It is very easy to just vote for a particular political affiliation, without putting any real thought into the person and values behind the political affiliation. Sadly, many of us do just that. As a voter, I want the folks that I cast my vote for to have the same base of values that I have. This way, when they make decisions for me, they will be consistent with my values. As a parent, I have a responsibility to love and protect my wife and my children. As a practicing Catholic I also have a duty to love and serve Our Lord Jesus, and his children. Additionally, I have a responsibility to elect official that align their beliefs with mine, especially in some very key issues at hand. These issues include the rights of the unborn child; the sanctity of Marriage, the continued legislation against Christianity, the steady trampling of victim’s rights in preference of criminal’s rights, and the elimination of parental rights and responsibility in lieu of state/federal law. In short, we have the choice to allow most of the 10 commandments, to be just tossed aside, so as to allow a “higher power”, our government, to decide what is best for us, or we can examine our candidates for local/state/federal offices and decide for ourselves, “Is this Candidate representative of

my Catholic faith and Family values?” So, never mind the ads, the slogans, and the phone calls, but instead research the candidates and ask “WWJD?” At Knights of Columbus and as Catholics, many of these choices are clear and Our Lord has already given us the conscience to know what is right.
