IDENTIFYING HEIGHT & BASE
DEFINING BASE & HEIGHT
Finding area & volume requires using height & base.
However, sometimes finding the right height and base can be confusing. We have to know which lines
are the height & the base, so we can accurately calculate answers! Height
The measurement from the top of the figure to the base,
straight up and down, when the
figure is right side up. (Notice it is not
from top to bottom… it’s top to base!)
Base
The line that the figure ‘stands’ on or can stand on; not always on the bottom, straight
left and right, when the figure is
right side up.
BASE & HEIGHT - TRIANGLES
BASE & HEIGHT - QUADRILATERALS
3D FIGURES
Height for a 3D figure is still from base to base!
With 3D figures, there are TWO
HEIGHTS!
1)The height of the base of the prism.
2)The height of the prism.
