This gives you additional options for quality, composition and disease testing surveillance, using the bulk milk samples that are collected by your tanker driver, reporting back out through NMR’s Herd Companion web portal.

NMR Group tests over 98% of milk buyer bulk tank samples throughout the UK, testing for constituents such as Bactoscan, FPD, SCC, butterfat, protein, lactose, casein, antibiotics, urea and fatty acids. About 6,000 samples per night are tested in our two laboratories at Four Ashes in the West Midlands, and Hillington, outside Glasgow.

Milk Quality Monitor

What is it? A range of tests carried out on bulk milk samples, which are in addition to the normal samples taken for payment purposes. They include bactoscan, somatic cell count (SCC), butterfat and protein.The tests are carried out using the ‘spare’ samples held in our fridges, so no extra sampling or work is required; just a quick phone call.Most samples are collected from hauliers via our own transport network, delivered to one of our two labs to be tested and results are reported all within 24 hours.

This gives you additional options for quality, composition and disease testing surveillance, using the bulk milk samples that are collected by your tanker driver, reporting back out through NMR’s Herd Companion web portal.

What is this service? Carried out using a PCR / DNA profiling test to determine the presence and quantity of the most common contagious and environmental mastitis causing pathogens. If Staph spp. are present, the test will also indicate if these bacteria are resistant to penicillin.

Why should you do it?Identifying which specific pathogen is causing mastitis will determine which treatment will be effective on an individual cow or quarter as well as determining what preventative measures to put in place to stop further cases occurring.

What are the benefits?• Reduced cost from dumping milk• Reduced wasted time in parlour• Prevents reduction in milk yield in the rest of the current lactation as well as subsequent lactations• Reducing the number of mastitis cases will therefore help your profit margins while improving herd health and animal welfare at the same time

What is involved?We recommend sterile sampling to reduce the risk of cross contamination. You can test an individual animal or even an individual quarter. We can also use your bulk milk samples stored in our fridge for a general picture of mastitis causing pathogens within the herd. What is Thermoduric testing?Thermoduric bacteria are widespread across the farm environment and the major routes of entry into milk are through dirty cow teat surfaces, poor parlour hygiene and residues on milk machine equipment.They can survive pasteurisation and carry over into dairy products, causing defects in the final product, such as reduced shelf life for milk or spoilage of cheese and butter. Bacillus and Clostridium are the most common Thermoduric bacteria found in milk. Thermoduric bacteria can even cause problems despite the overall bactoscan being low.

Helps you decide which cows within your herd could be suitable for Selective Dry Cow Therapy.

Selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) is now at the forefront for dairy herds, largely because of the positive steps taken by milk buyers and vets to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use. SDCT makes the move from the blanket use of antibiotics in all cows at drying off to targeted treatment of only those cows with evidence of udder infection.

SDCT enables evidence-based decision making and the better the evidence you have, the more confident you can be in having a successful outcome. Gathering data at both herd and cow level is important. Regular and repeated individual cow SCCs, accurate mastitis records and working with your vet are essential.

Selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) is now at the forefront for dairy herds, largely because of the positive steps taken by milk buyers and vets to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use. SDCT makes the move from the blanket use of antibiotics in all cows at drying off to targeted treatment of only those cows with evidence of udder infection.

SDCT enables evidence-based decision making and the better the evidence you have, the more confident you can be in having a successful outcome. Gathering data at both herd and cow level is important. Regular and repeated individual cow SCCs, accurate mastitis records and working with your vet are essential.

Johne’s DiseaseJohne’s disease is a chronic, progressive intestinal disease caused by infection with Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP).As of January 2019, NMR Group labs were testing 140,000 samples a month for Johne’s, (or 400,000 animals).

Cows are usually infected when young, with calves being 80% more susceptible in their first month of life. The calf may be infected while in the womb, by drinking infected colostrum and milk, or by ingesting faeces. The organism may last for a year in slurry or on pastures. Only 1-5% of infected cows in a herd will show clinical signs of the disease. The rest of the infected animals will appear healthy, highlighting the need for testing. Infection is almost always introduced to a herd by purchasing infected replacement breeding stock, including bulls.

Herd Level TestingNMR recommends a whole herd screen to detect herd level infection in dairy herds (blood screens can be performed for beef herds). This should be targeted at the cows most likely to show a positive result. Cows should be between 3 and 7 years old and should be selected according to their condition, whether they have problems with lameness, high SCC or mastitis or whether they have depressed milk yield or are ‘poor doers’ in general.Bulk milk Johne’s tests are not recommended due to the false confidence that can be placed on “low”

results. A relatively high percentage of animals could be shedding antibodies into the bulk milk tank before the test would return a “medium” result.

How does it work?Instead of paying your breed society a fee per registration, you are charged a flat fee per cow in herd per month. NMR provides your breed society with the number of cows in your herd each month, and your breed society then sends you a monthly invoice based on this, depending on their per cow fee for this service.

NOTE: On THR you must either telephone in your registrations or use the Internet registration service that your breed society provides.
