A woman with a mind and a voice has the power to change worlds Sasha Temerte 06 KNOWLEDGEPEDIA Ahead of World Poetry Day on March 21, we take a look at different types of poetic forms and the poets who influenced India. Students pick their favourite poets & pay tribute to this fading art form P oetry reaffirms our common hu- manity by revealing to us that in- dividuals, everywhere in the world, share the same questions and feelings. Poetry is the main- stay of oral tradition and, over centuries, can communicate the innermost values of diverse cultures. Poetry, as an art form, is also reviv- ing and transforming to fit into the digital realm, cutting short on words and making it more relatable to the new- age audience. In celebrating World Poetry Day, March 21, Unesco recognises the unique ability of poetry to cap- ture the creative spir- it of the human mind. One of the main objectives of the day is to support linguistic diversity through po- etic expression and offer endangered languages the op- portunity to be heard within their communities. The ob- servance of World Poetry Day is also meant to encourage a return to the oral tradition of poetry recitals, promote the teaching of poetry, restore a dialogue with poetry so that it will no longer be considered an out- dated form of art. Sylvia Plath has influenced me a lot. Her poems are deep and por- tray the darker problems which aren't addressed. ANANYA RAO, class VIII, Vidyashilp Academy, Bengaluru YOU, THE FADING HAIKU Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry which is com- posed of three non rhyming lines. The first and third lines have five syllables each and the second line has seven syllables. They often express feelings and thoughts about nature; however, you could write a poem about any subject that you would like to in this form. Perhaps the most famous example of Haiku is BASHO'S OLD POND. BALLAD EPIC POEM Are you familiar with the term ‘ballad’? You proba- bly are, because people sometimes refer to songs — particularly romantic ones — as ballads. In fact, ballad poems are fre- quently sung and are often about love. Often, these ballads will tell stories and they tend to be of a mystical nature. Ballads tend to have a refrain that repeats at various intervals. GUIDO CAVALCANTI'S BALLAD and SIR WALTER RALEIGH'S AS YOU CAME from the Holy Land demonstrate the musical quality of the ballad. PASTORAL One of the poetic favourites is pastoral poet- ry because it elicits such wonderful senses of peace and harmony. Examples of this form include KEATS' ODE ON A GRECIAN URN, which is also a type of ode. IMAGERY We decided to place a focus on imagery poems because of the immense power that they possess. Many, many poems can be classified as imagery poems; however, some are better at the task than others. Individuals who often write imagery- based poems are known as Imagists. WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS' SHORT POEM THE RED WHEELBARROW is a famous example of a short imagist poem. These types of poems work to draw a picture in the mind of the reader, in order to give an extremely powerful image of what the writer is talking about. They work to intensify the sens- es of the reader. THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF POEMS TERZA RIMA You might be able to get some sort of sense of what this poetry encompasses just by looking at the name of it. The lines in these types of poems are arranged in what are called "tercets." What this means is the lines come in groups of threes. That does not mean that the poem is only three lines long. There can be multi- ple groups of three lines. Like the haiku, there are cer- tain syllable requirements, as most poems written in terza rima have lines of 10 or 11 syllables. The Italian poet DANTE created this form, and his DIVINE COMEDY is one of the best-known examples of the form. SONNET One of the most famous types of poetry, the sonnet, has been popular with authors from Dante to Shakespeare. A sonnet contains 14 lines, typ- ically with two rhyming stan- zas known as a rhyming couplet at the end. There are several types of sonnets, including Italian (also known as Petrarchan) Spenserian English or SHAKESPEAREAN SONNET. Shakespeare, famous for writing more than 150 son- nets (including his popular Sonnet 138) is credited with creating for a form of the sonnet that enjoyed widespread popularity through- out England for hundreds of years. FREE VERSE While it is easy to think that poems have to rhyme, free verse is a type of poetry that does not require any rhyme scheme or meter. Poems writ- ten in free verse, however, do tend to employ other types of creative lan- guage such as alliteration, words that begin with the same sound, or asso- nance, the repetition of vowel sounds. Some people find free verse to be a less restrictive type of poetry to write since it doesn’t have to employ the form or the rhyming schemes of other types of poetry. The free verse form of poetry became popular in the 1800s, and continues to be popular among poets even to this day. TS Eliot was one of the masters of the form THE WASTE LAND AND THE LOVE SONG OF J. ALFRED PRUFROCK. Kabir This 15th century mystic poet is among the most recognised authorities in Indian literature. Kabir penned poems in Hindi borrowing from a range of dialects, and wrote on various aspects of life and faith. Kabir was known for being critical of reli- gion as it existed at the time — primarily Hinduism and Islam, and the various rituals they came with. Kalidasa Considered to be the greatest Sanskrit poet, Kalidasa is said to have belonged to the 5th century, though most details of his life are subject to speculation. His epics Kumarasambhava and Raghuvamsa are among the most revered to this day. His work revolved around themes and stories from the ancient religious texts of the Vedas and Puranas. Ghalib One of the most influential poets in Urdu, Ghalib wrote during the last years of the Mughal empire. He started com- posing poetry at the age of 11, and was well versed in Urdu, Persian, Turkish and Arabic. Ghalib's poetry, composed in Urdu and Persian, probes a range of topics including philosophy, existentialism, the mysteries of life and other subjects. Amir Khusrau Born in 1253, this Sufi poet has been called the father of Urdu literature even though his poetry was primarily com- posed in Persian. He is credited with having fused traditions from across the continent to create the qawwali style of songwriting. He is also remembered today for having introduced ghazals to the Indian subcon- tinent. His poetry took many forms including ghazals, masnavi, qatar & rubai. Mirabai Born in 1498, Mirabai’s mystic poetry is remembered mostly for its devotion to the Hindu deity, Krishna. While several records from the time indicate to her having been a highly-influential fig- ure in exploring topics such as divinity, mysticism and love in poetry, there are no surviv- ing original manuscripts of her work. Sri Aurobindo Ghosh Better known as Sri Aurobindo, he is known to the world as a scholar, a national leader and a spiritual guru. He started writing poetry as a young student. Apart from The Life Divine and Synthesis of Yoga, his principal poetic work is Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol. Rabindranath Tagore Among the recognised figures from modern Indian literature, Tagore wrote poetry primarily in Bengali. He was much more than a poet, having com- posed novels, dra- mas, short stories. However, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, for Gitanjali, a collection of poems. Mir Taqi Mir Besides being one of India’s most important modern poets, Sri Aurobindo was also a highly influential philosopher, yogi and political fig- ure. His poetry revolved around themes of spirituality and mortality, and translations of Vedas, Upanishads and the Gita. Sarojini Naidu Known as the Nightingale of India, Sarojini Naidu, an influential poet, is a highly celebrated freedom fighter. Naidu set the tone for modern Indian literary traditions. Her work explores themes such as love, death, patriot- ism, among others. Kamala Surayya Born in 1934 in Kerala, Kamala Surayya is among the most influen- tial figures in Indian English language poetry. Popularly known as Madhavikutty, she wrote on issues such as love, betray- al, sexuality and politics. Her work was explicit and groundbreaking. Robert Frost's poems have greatly influ- enced me. They are full of metaphors for the choices you have to make in life. The Road Not Taken has influenced me to walk my own path. MAISHA MANN NAIR, class XI, MGM Central Public School, Tvm NEW AGE POETRY Insta poetry O ver the last five years, po- ets across the world have turned to the social media plat- form to share ex- cerpts of their work. Nikita Gill has found herself in a growing group of writers, including Rupi Kaur, R.M. Drake, Atticus, Aman- da Lovelace, Cleo Wade, and Nayyirah Waheed, often referred to as "Insta- gram poets”. Slam poetry S lam Poetry is a type of com- petition where people read their poems without props, costumes, or music. After perform- ing, they receive scores (0-10) from 5 randomly selected judges. The judges can be anyone: they don’t even need to be poets! Scores are awarded based on how much each judge likes a poem. “Slam poetry” has an event-for- mat, where poets perform and judges choose the winners. Spoken Word Poetry (or performance poet- ry) is poetry that’s written to be per- formed. What differentiates it is that it’s an amalgamation of 2 art forms — literary art and performance art. Slam poetry is hence a subset of spo- ken word poetry. FAMOUS POETS OF INDIA One of the longest types of poems is known as the epic poem, which has been around for thou- sands of years. Technically a type of nar- rative poem, which tells a story, epic poems usually tell the story of a mythical warrior and the great things that he accom- plished in all his journeys such as THE ODYSSEY AND THE ILIAD. Epic poetry began as folk stories that were passed down the generations, which were then later written in long form. LIMERICK A limerick is a poem that is often silly or whimsical, written in five lines with an AABBA rhyme scheme. Often, limericks tell a short, humorous story. These types of poems have been popular for hundreds of years, particularly in the English language. When limericks first became popular, they often expressed ideas that were crude and off-colour but today, limericks express all sorts of ideas. The form of the limerick was made popular by a British poet named Edward Lear in the 1800s – THERE WAS AN OLD MAN WITH A NOSE and THERE WAS A YOUNG LADY OF DORKING. Wordsworth's poems invented a new style in which nature and the diction of the common man trumped formal, stylised lan- guage. SAMYUKTAA SIVAKU- MAR, class IX, Ryan int’l School, Kandivali East, Mumbai Sarojini Naidu has influenced me the most. Her poems have a tinge of patriotism and the Swadeshi spirit... Be it the Bazaars of Hyderabad or Gift of India. HELLY NAYAK, class XII, Anand Niketan, Ahmedabad ELEGY Because poems can express a wide variety of emotions, there are sad forms of poetry as well as happy ones. One of these sad forms is known as an elegy. Elegies express a lament, often over the death of a loved one. This makes elegies especially popular for funerals. Some elegies are writ- ten not only to be read out loud; they can be put to music and sung. TENNYSON'S IN MEMORIAM is an elegy to a close friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, and was written over 20 years.
