Types of TA The Territorial Army initially had var- ious types of units such as Armed Regt, Infantry Battalion, Air De- fence, Medical Regt , Engi- neers Field Park Coy, Signal Regiment, EME Workshop, Coast Battery, ASC GT Coy, ASC Compo Platoon, AMC Field Ambulance, by 1972 these units have either been disbanded or converted to Regular Army. Functions The Territorial Army is a part of the Regular Army and its pres- ent role is to relieve the Regular Army from static duties and assist civil ad- ministration in dealing with natural calamities and maintenance of es- sential services in situations where life of the communities is affected or se- curity of the country is threatened, and to provide units for Regular Army as and when required. Strength Presently the Territorial Army has a strength of 40,000 personnel comprising De- partmental TA such as Railway, IOC, ONGC, and Non De- partmental TA of Infantry Battalion, Ecological Battalion (TA) af- filiated to various Infantry Regiments and Engineer Regiment (TA) for main- tenance of Line of Control Fencing. Roles and Responsibilities The TA units were actively involved in 1962, 1965 and 1971 operations. The “Ter- riers” have also taken part in Operation Pawan in Sri Lan- ka, Operation Rakshak in Punjab and J&K, Opera- tion Rhino and Opera- tion Bajrang in the Northeast in a most ac- tive manner. Departmental units came to the aid of the civil authorities during ndustrial unrest and nat- ural calamities, most fa- mous being the earthquake in Latur (Maharashtra), Uttarkashi in Garhwal Himalaya and the Supper Cyclone in Odisha. The Ecological units have arrested man made environmental degradation by planting approx six crore and 65 lakh trees in Mussoorie Hills and Pithora- garh (UK), Shimla (HP), Jaisalmer (Ra- jasthan) Bhatti Mines (Delhi), Chard- uar, Kokrajhar (Assam) & Samba (J&K). ARMY OF CELEBS Many famous people, especially sportsmen, have joined the Territorial Army. Recently, Lt Col MS Dhoni was deployed in Kashmir as part of Victor Force to take up patrolling, guard and post duties. A look at others who have pitched in... Lieutenant Colonel (Honorary) MS Dhoni proceeded to 106 TA Battalion (Para) from July 31 and remained there till August 15. Dhoni had taken a two-month break from cricket to serve his regiment. Dhoni was accorded the ho- nour by the Indian Army in 2011. Four years ago, Dhoni became a qualified paratrooper when he completed five parachute training jumps from the Indian Army aircraft at the Agra training camp. Dhoni has been seen in his Army greens on many occasions. In the recent World Cup, there was a controversy over a military logo he sported on his wicketkeep- ing gloves, something that the ICC objected to and was later covered. Recently, West Indies pacer Sheldon Cot- trell praised Dhoni for his dedication and love for the Indian Army. Cottrell, a soldier in the Jamaican Defence Force, took to Twitter and said that Dhoni is an inspiration both on and off the field. “This man is an inspiration on the cricket field. But he is also a patriot and a man that gives to his country beyond duty,” he tweeted. THE ROLL OF HONOUR INTERNATIONAL STARS WHO SERVED MILITARY From my childhood, I had wanted to join the Army. I used to visit the cantonment area and seeing the soldiers, I hoped that one day I could be among them. MS DHONI The English raised the Territorial Army in 1920 through Indian Territorial Act of 1920 and it comprised two wings – ‘The Auxiliary Force’ for Europeans & Anglo-Indians, and ‘The Indian Territorial Force’ for Indian Volunteers. After Independence, the Territorial Army Act was passed in 1948 and the first Indian Governor General, C Rajagopalachari, for- mally inaugurated the Territorial Army. It is celebrated with the TA Day Parade every year. KAPIL DEV The man who brought the Cricket World Cup to India in 1983, joined the Territorial Army in 2008 and was bestowed the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is the first cricketer to ever receive this hon- orary rank. SACHIN TENDULKAR Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar was honoured with the rank of group captain in 2015. He became the first sportsperson to be conferred the hon- orary title and the first without an aviation back- ground to receive this honour. The batsman has become the face of the Indian Air Force of youth. Recently, he was seen attending a 83rd Air Force day celebration in Hindon. ABHINAV BINDRA Abhinav Bindra became a legend when he won a Gold in shooting in the Commonwealth Games 2014 held in Glasgow. After capturing the Gold at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, he was honoured with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army in 2011, along with Mahendra Singh Dhoni. While Dhoni joined the Para regiment, Bindra joined the Sikh Regiment of the Territorial Army. SACHIN PILOT Sachin Pilot is a politician and a member of the Indian National Congress. Pilot became the youngest Member of Parliament in the country at the age of 26. On September 6, 2012, he became the first Union minister of India to be commis- sioned as an officer (rank of Lieutenant) in the Territorial Army, thus fulfilling his own desire to follow his father’s footsteps and be in the armed forces. Recommended from the Bangalore SSB, he joined the Sikh Regiment in 2012. VIJAY KUMAR Vijay Kumar, the Indian shooter who was serving in the army, grabbed the silver medal in 25 mtr rapid fire pistol event in the summer Olympics 2012. He is getting trained to excel his shooting skills. RAJYAVARDHAN SINGH RATHORE Another eminent sports and political personality, Rathore has been a source of pride and inspiration for our coun- try. He has won numer- ous gold and sil- ver medals in shooting in the Comm- onwealth Games and World Shooting Championships. Rathore is a graduate of the National Defence Academy. He served as an officer in the Indian Army till 2013, post which, he took early retirement as a Colonel. DEEPAK RAO Major Deepak Rao is a multi-faceted personality. He is an Indian military trainer, author, and physician and is con- sidered to be a pioneer in the field of close quarter battle training. He was made the brand ambassador of the Territorial Army. Deepak and wife Seema have been train- ing the forces for the past 17 years. They are both doctors, but have been training Indian forces in commando war- fare and counter-terrorism MOHANLAL A versatile actor from Kerala, Mohanlal, in 2009, became the first and only actor to receive the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. He has been honoured with Padma Shri. Sean Connery – British Royal Navy He might be known as the ulti- mate James Bond actor, but Sean Connery once worked in the British Royal Navy. Rock Hudson – US Navy Rock Hudson entered the US Navy in 1944, just after he finished school. He served in the Philippines as a Navy aircraft mechanic until 1946. Alan Alda – US Army Reserve Most of us remember actor Alan Alda for his role as Hawkeye Pierce in the show M*A*S*H. Alda first received mili- tary training when he was still a sen- ior at Fordham University and later took up the Reserve Officers’ Training. Steve McQueen – US Marines Steve McQueen actually served in the US Marines between 1947 and 1950. However, his natural rebel- lion made his time in the Army a lot more diffi- cult than he had hoped. Because of his behaviour, was actually demoted seven times! Zulay Henao – US Army You might not have known that this gorgeous model and actress is actually a US vet. Henao served in the military for three years right after high school and before she entered her acting career.
