The Beach Club is a waterfront restaurant beside Klong Son Beach in the exclusive Siam Royal View development, which is also home to the island’s only Golf Course and a Yacht Marina.The restaurant is housed in an airy and tastefully decorated modern building beside a horizon swimming pool that diners are welcome to use. It is a great location for an afternoon meal accompanied by a swim and some beachside relaxation. Alternatively it is an atmospheric spot to watch the sun set or book in advance and come down for a delicious evening meal.Given the location prices are very reasonable and there are a large number of mouth-watering menu options. Thailand is one of the world leaders in the provision of Spa treatments to inter-national visitors and this has developed from the nation’s great history as a repository of massage and traditional medical expertise. Much of this is due to Thai Massage which is an ancient discipline that is thought to have been introduced to the country from India along with Buddhism in the second to third centuries BC.Thai massage in its most traditional form is known in Thai as Nuad Bo-Rarn, literally ancient pressure.

The theory that underpins Thai massage is the concept that the body contains 72,000 sen which are vessels or pathways for lom – air or energy. The massage process con-centrates on the applying of pressure to the most important sen thus releasing tension within the body.

The main characteristics of Thai Massage are that it involves deep massage and manipulation by stretching. It is generally performed on a mat on the floor, without the use of oil. The masseur performs a slow and progressive routine of sequential pressures and movements that relax the muscles to prepare for the comprehensive stretches that follow. The masseur typically uses their body weight to assist with these stretches.

There are significant benefits of Thai Massage, to the extent that it is formally rec-ognised as a traditional medicine in Thailand. These include the stimulation of the circulatory and lymphatic systems as well as the stimulation of internal organs. It can assist with muscle pains, strains and spasms. Regular massage improves body posture as well as increasing flexibility. It relieves fatigue and causes a feeling of relaxation combined with increased levels of energy.

There are many places on Koh Chang where you can enjoy a Thai massage ranging from practitioners who will perform a massage for you on the beach up to the opulent and luxurious settings of the Spas themselves. So choose one that suits you and enjoy an ancient and healthy pleasure.

This refreshing cocktail is a Norwegian classic and the recipe has been kindly provided by The White Elephant in White Sand Beach. The literal translation of the drink’s name is “Mountain Stream” but it is also the name of a type of Norwegian knife. Both are appropriate to the drink, which has a cleansing sweet/sourness as well as a knife-like nip provided by the mixture of the two spirits.

rs What could be more Thai than a pond covered with the green circular landing-pad leaves and the beautiful white or purple flower bulbs of the water-loving Lotus plant? The Lotus is so closely associated with Thailand and with Buddhism that Lotus has become one of the most common names for Thai restaurants all over the world. But this beautiful flower isn’t just pleasing to the eye. Here in Thailand where even the most improbable ingredients are turned to surprising and surprisingly delicious culinary uses it also provides several prized and delicious ingredients to Thai national cuisine.

Virtually all of the plant is used in cooking: Lotus flowers can be flash fried in a very light batter as an elegant snack. Lotus leaves are used to wrap ingredients to protect them during steaming or roasting and impart a delicate flavour. Lotus seeds can be eaten raw when young or can be boiled or roasted and added as ingredients or eaten as snacks in a similar manner to peanuts. Lotus shoots when young can be used as a mild, crunchy and different salad ingredient. Lotus stems are the stems of the flowers, not the leaves. They are delicate and provide a great addition to a number of stir-fry dishes and are also delicious with prawns or fish in a spicy southern coconut curry or, again with prawns, in the fabulous hot and sour dish tamarind soup called Gang Som. Then there is the Lotus root which is a fibrous vegetable that has a similar cross section to Okra. It is commonly cut into fingers and boiled or steamed. A great example of s dish that uses lotus roots is the By the way “The Lotos Eaters” is the title of a famous poem by Sir Alfred Lord Tennyson that revisits Homer’s Odyssey and the story of sailors who land ashore at an island and begin to eat the Lotos tree. They become drowsy and apathetic and so are unable to escape the island. But anyone worried about any narcotic effects of the Thai Lotus can relax. The ancient tale refers to a totally different plant and modern research has produced several candidates, one being the blue water Lily of the Nile. The Thai Lotus is perfectly safe and delicious to eat - and definitely won’t prevent you from escaping Koh Chang.
