For first-time students, being away from parents, adjusting to a new environment with new people, and adapting to a new routine can be overwhelming. You can help by talking about the positive aspects of school. Tell stories about your happy, funny and enjoyable experiences at school. Talk to older siblings about how they can help so they don’t tell scary stories. Other useful strategies for all children: *Set aside time to talk about school *Listen carefully to any worries, but build a positive experience *Find out about what happens at school so you can have a clear realistic picture *Use school newsletters and information to make sure your child knows what is happening *Encourage your child to build friendships with children in their class * Keep positive as most problems will resolve themselves as your child adapts to a new way of life. Learning Packs : parents and caregivers are encouraged to please engage the package as soon as possible, to allow the teachers to get on with the job of teaching/learning. We welcome payment options and instalments across an agreed period. Thank You to the 47% who have already paid. Please discuss with the school any support you may require. SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Swimming Carnival 2015 Yesterday Kirrawee Public School held their Annual Swimming Carnival at Caringbah Leisure Centre. We had 92 students attend the carnival and had a really successful day. A special mention needs to go to Will Rule (5M) who broke 2 long standing school records yesterday. Will broke the 10 year boys 50m Freestyle record that had been held since 1985. The previous record was 35.5 seconds and Will swam it in 34.56. The second record he broke was the Junior Boys 50m Backstroke record that had been held since 2003. The previous record was 45.9 and Will swam it in 44.20 seconds. Congratulations Will – what an amazing effort! A special mention should go to Jessica Sheridan-Polemini (3/6S) for her persistence in participating in

as many races as possible, especially the individual medley where she showed extreme perseverance in order to finish the race. Well done Jessica!

Also we must thank our parent helpers who assisted with time keeping on the day. We couldn’t have run the carnival without you and really appreciate your efforts. A huge thank you goes to:

Wendy Hunter, Skye Keers, Lyn Lamaro, Corinne and Doug Krogh. Notes will be distributed to students who qualify for Zone once the Zone PSSA meeting is held and qualifying times are distributed to schools. Once again thank you to the students for outstanding behaviour and to the staff for their assistance in organising a successful carnival. Kind regards, Mrs Melissa Oostdam Assistant Principal

School Banking Day Reminder

Wednesday February 4th is the first school banking day of the year. Don’t forget to bring in weekly deposit books and hand them to the class teacher. For new students and students not yet involved in the school banking scheme there will be an account opening day held at the school on February 20th at 9am – Further details will follow in the next week. If you would like your child to start banking before the account opening day, but currently don’t have a bank account go into any branch of the Commonwealth Bank and ask to open a “Youthsaver” account and you can start banking the very next Wednesday.

KPS Munch and Crunch

Welcome back everyone, I hope that you all enjoyed the holidays. Welcome also to our new kindy students and families and our new students in other years. The canteen days have changed this year to be open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday only. We need at least 5 more volunteers to fill the roster and ensure that all volunteers only need to come in one day a month. We are especially light on volunteers on a Thursday. You don't have to commit to a whole day, a couple of hours in the morning or afternoon is helpful too. Please return the volunteer form or contact me directly if you have time to spare this year. The children love to see someone they know in the canteen and its pretty fun! Flexischools is our online ordering system. It is a convenient and easy way to order lunches and uniforms. Orders for lunches can be done the week before, day before or even the morning of the order up until 9:30am. To register please visit flexischools.com.au The updated menu has been sent home this week, some prices have increased to cover costs. Please review the menu prior to ordering to avoid disappointment. One of the changes has been to our slushies due to a stock price increase they now come in one size at the price of $2.00. The company that we use and have always used for our slushies is Tropical Slush, they are registered with the Healthy Kids Association and their mixture is 99% fruit juice with no added sugar or fat. The current flavours we have are Raspberry and Peach/Mango but these flavours will vary throughout the year. Children can select one flavour or both flavours in their cup. Slushies are rated amber (an occasional food) so please keep this in mind when deciding how much money to send your children with to the canteen. If anyone has any concerns or questions in regards to any aspect of the canteen please feel free to contact me directly on 0416 113 548 I look forward to a wonderful 2015 Skye Keers Canteen Superviser
