What? It’s February already? Not quite but if you check the cover it does, indeed, say February on it – despite the fact that you either bought this issue or it was delivered to you by the postman, in January.That’s one of the publishing game’s time-honoured traditions ... one which when I tried to explain it to an exasperated reader just before Christmas, didn’t make much sense!

LIKE FASHIONWhat it reflects though, is the ‘now’ of the game we are working/living in. And, don’t laugh, I’m not talking about websites or even Facebook, I’m talking about a magazine.Magazines are the ultimate ‘snapshot of time.’ Like fashion, they don’t have a particularly long shelf life (after all, there’s always another one coming along) but when you’re reading a current issue you know that you’ve got your finger on the pulse.Take this issue. Events-wise we’ve got coverage of both the Cemetery Circuit street racing meeting at Wanganui on Boxing Day and the Summercross motocross at Awakaponga in the Bay of Plenty from just before New Years.We’ve also got a ‘first ride’ impression of Husqvarna’s new TR650 Terra (the on/off-road version) and a full test report on the new Gas Gas XC300. As well as a whole host of other stories, tests and opinion pieces which anchor us to this particular time (the end of 2012 and beginning of 2013) and place (New Zealand).

The ability of the mag to do this is brought home each and every month by the Looking Back column which Roger Moroney collates.For instance, it’s 10 years ago this month (Feb) that legendary British rider Sammy Miller was special guest at the annual Classic Fest, and 15 since Max Corkill, his partner Gaynor Martin and his beloved riding companion Rastus that cat were

killed in a tragic (and totally needless) road accident. Good news or bad, we’ve been providing monthly snapshots of the local and (where there’s a Kiwi involved) international motorcycle scene since 1984. Some things, technology in particular, have changed in absolutely quantum terms in that time. Others – like the plain, simple pleasure of digging the bike out of the shed and going for a ride – haven’tAnd it’s with that thought that I will leave you as I start thinking about what’s in the next issue as I put the finishing touches to this one…. ■
