After hearing great voice from the sky, Kamsa became afraid.

Immediately he caught Devakis hair and raised his sword to kill

her. Vasudeva, her new husband, stopped him and said, My

dear brother-in-law, please do not kill your own sister. She willnever give you trouble. Right now you are safe. Whenever she

has any children, I promise to give them all to you. Kamsa knew

that Vasudeva would keep his promise, so he did not kill her.

When she took Krishna on her lap, Krishna closed His eyes and angrily took her milk. Actually, Putana had come to kill Krishnawith a very strong poison smeared on her breast. Angry baby Krishna held her with His two little hands. He sucked very hard. He

sucked all the poison along with her milk, and finally her life-air. Immediately He killed her and she fell down on the ground.

Mother Yasoda, Rohini and other elderly gopis fanned Him with the tail of a cow. The dust from the cows feet was thrown all

over His body. The gopis chanted twelve names of Vishnu to give Krishna's body full protection on all sides and up and

down. Then Mother Yasoda nursed Him in her lap. Mean while all the people of Vraja cut Putanas monstrous body into pieces

and piled it up with wood for burning. The smoke from the fire made a very good smell because she had been killed by LordKrishna. Her only work was to kill small children. She was very fond of blood. Putana had come to kill Krishna but had become

purified just because she gave her milk to Krishna to drink.

After burning Putanas body, Nanda Maharaja came home very

happy that his wonderful little child was saved from the great demon

Putana. When Nanda Maharaja celebrated Krishna's first birthday, he

called a nice band and brahmanas to chant. Mother Yasoda bathedKrishna.

Mother Yasoda put Krishna on a little bed under a cart. Soon he

was crying, but she could not hear Him because of the loud music

and chanting. Krishna was very hungry and angrily kicked His legs

against the cart. Though His legs were small and very soft, the cart

and all the pots and pans on it fell down, making a lot of noise. The

wheel also came off and broke into pieces. Everyone ran over to

    see what happened.

Naming ceremony : Gargamuni told Nanda Maharaja,

Rohinis son will be called Rama because He will be very

pleasing to the family. He will also be called Balarama

because He will be very strong. The other boy is really

Devakis son and will be called Krishna by some and

Vasudeva by others. While Krishna is in Vrindavana,

everyone will be happy and safe. This child will grow in power, beauty, and opulence in everything just as the Supreme

Personality of Godhead. Therefore, protect Him very carefully

so he grows up without disturbance.

Both Krishna and Balarama used to crawl on Their hands and knees.

Sometimes these naughty babies crawled into the cowshed and held onto

the tails of the calves who would run with them here and there over clay

and cow dung. To see this fun, Mother Yasoda and Mother Rohini would

call all their neighbors and friends, the gopis, and laugh very loudly.

Then Mother Yashoda saw the most wonderful things inside the mouth of

Krishna. She saw mountains, islands, oceans, seas, planets, air, fire, moon,

stars, the whole universe and outer space in all directions. And right in His

mouth, she also saw herself with Krishna on her lap, drinking milk. Shethought, Is this really happening or am I dreaming? Then, confused, she

simply thought of Krishna as her own child in her lap. She hugged Him and

    gave Him a big kiss.

Once upon a time, two demigods named Nalakuvara and Manigriva went into Lord Sivas garden next to the Mandakini river. They drank a lot and

listened to the women singing there. Then they all went into the Ganges River full of lotus flowers and enjoyed themselves just like elephants splashing inthe water. Suddenly the great sage, Narada Muni happened to come that way. The two demigod sons of Kuvera did not even cover their naked bodies

properly; nor did they pay their respectful obeisances to him. To teach them a lesson, Narada turned them into trees in the garden of Nanda Maharaja.

After many, many years of living as trees, they would see Krishna face to face and be good devotees of Lord Krishna again.

Mother Yashoda was making butter. Krishna climbed into their lap to drink her breast milk. She smiled, enjoying the beauty of His face.

Suddenly she remembered the milk on the stove in the kitchen which was about to boil over. Quickly she put Krishna down on the ground and

ran to the kitchen to take the milk off the fire. Krishna had not finished drinking and was very angry. With red eyes and false tears, He broke

the butter pot and took the butter away to eat nicely in a quiet corner all by Himself.

Mother Yashoda came back from the kitchen and saw the broken pot, but did not see Krishna. After looking all over, she found her naughty

little son taking more butter from a swing she had hung from the ceiling, By this time, He was all covered with the butter he had eaten and

was feeding the rest to the monkeys. Krishna was looking this was and that in fear of being caught. Yashoda came with a stick and He ranvery quickly. She chased Him to all corners of the house and yard.

When she finally caught Him, she started to tie His

hands together with a rope, but it was a little too short

by two inches. She got more rope from the house and

added it, but found it was still not enough. She got more

and more rope, but each time she tried to tie the last

knot, she saw it was always about two inches short!

How was this happening? She became so tired doing

this again and again; then Krishna finally let her tie Himup with her rope without playing any more tricks. She

left Him tied up to the mortar and went inside the house

    to finish her work.

Little Krishna, dragging along the wooden mortar

behind Him, crawled straight through the two

trees. But the large wooden mortar turned

crosswise and got stuck between. Still, Krishnapulled and pulled and pulled the rope until the two

trees fell down with a big sound: Crash! Out of

the broken, fallen trees came two beautiful

demigods, Manigriva and Nalakuvara, shining like

fire. At once, they bowed down to baby Krishna to

    offer their prayers.

Lord Krishna, who was still tied to the wooden

mortar by the ropes of Mother Yashoda, began to

smile and said, You are very lucky. The great

devotee Narada Muni blessed you with pure love

for Me. So this is your last time in the material

world. Now you may go back to your fathers

house in the heavenly planets, where you will do

devotional service to Me and go back to Godhead

in this very lifetime. They bowed down again and

again after walking around their beloved Lord.

Then they left for their home. All the while, the

Lord was still tied with ropes.

One day, a fruit lady came down the road in front

of Nanda Maharajas house. She called out, If

anyone wants fruits, please come and take them

from me! The child Krishna took some grains ofrice in His hands (as He had seen the older

people do) to exchange them for fruits. But His

hands were very small and He was not so careful

to hold the grains very well. So He dropped most

of them as He walked. The Lord was so very

beautiful and charming that the fruit lady just filled

His hands and arms with as many fruits as thechild could hold. When she looked back at her

basket again, she saw that it had become filled

with jewels where there had only been fruits a

moment before. Just by getting a few of her fruits,

Lord Krishna had in turn given her a great fortune.

One day, because demons came to disturb the children often,

all the cowherd men decided to move with their families and

children to a nice place near Vrndavana called Govardhana

Hill. Everyone loaded all their belongings on carts. The old

men, women and children sat on the carts. All the cows and

bulls walked in front. The men surrounded them carrying bowsand arrows and blowing on their horns and bugles. When they

got there, they circled around Vrndavana by keeping the carts

all together. After seeing how beautiful Govardhana Hill was

on the bank of the Yamuna River, they began to build their

    new homes.

Krishna and Balarama were now old enough to take charge of the small calves. So along with other little

cowherd boys, They went to the fields with Their calves. Sometimes, They played on Their flutes, andsometimes They played ball with Amalaki fruits. Sometimes They danced and made tinkling sounds with Their

ankle bells. Sometimes They made Themselves into bulls and cows by covering themselves with blankets.

Once when Krishna and Balarama played there, a demon

named Vatsasura turned himself into a small calf and walked

with the other calves in the field. But Krishna saw this.

Balarama, He said, that is the Vatsasura demon, not acalf. Both brothers followed him and sneaked up on him.

Krishna caught the demon-calf by the two back legs and tail,

whipped him around very hard and threw him up into a tree.

When the demon fell down from the top of the tree and lay

dead on the ground, all the playmates of Krishna called out,

Well done! Well done! and the demigods in the sky

    showered flowers with great satisfaction.

Bakasura was a friend of the demon Kamsa. He came kill Krishna.

Quickly he attacked Krishna with his sharp beaks and swallowed

Him up. The boys became so terribly afraid, they didnt know what

they were going to do.Suddenly, the Bakasura demon felt a burning in his throat. Krishna

was becoming hotter and hotter like fire in the demons throat.

Finally the demon vomited Krishna up and tried to kill Him by

pinching Him with his beaks. But Krishna was faster than the

demon. He caught hold of those great big beaks. On front of all of

is friends He broke open Bakasuras mouth, just as easily as a

child splits a blade of grass. Up in the sky the demigods played

music with bugles, drums and conch shells and showered camellia

flowers, the sweetest smelling of all flowers.

    Snake demonAghasura

One day the Aghasura demon watched Krishna and His

friends playing in the forests. Aghasura was the younger

brother of Putana and Bakasura, and he thought, Krishna

killed my brother and sister. Now I shall kill Him along with all

His friends and calves. Then, naturally, their mothers and

fathers will also die of sorrow.

So the great demon Aghasura made himself longer and

longer and longer until he was eight miles long, just like a

very, very fat snake. He stretched his mouth side open just

like a mountain cave. His lower lip touched the ground and

his upper lip touched the clouds way up in the sky. His jaws

were very deep and his teeth just like mountain peaks. Hishot tongue looked like a wide road and his breathing was like

a very windy storm. His eyes were blazing like fire. Since he

wanted to swallow all the boys at once, even Krishna and

Balarama, he sat on the path, waiting

At first the boys thought the demon was only a statue, but

them they began to talk with each other about him. this

looks like a huge snake which has opened its mouth widerand wider to eat all of us. But even if it were to swallow us all

at once, it could not possibly swallow Krishna! Krishna will

kill him easily as He did Bakasura. All the boys looked at the

beautiful lotus-like face of Krishna and they began to clap

and smile. They were not afraid and so they marched

forward right into the big open mouth of the serpent.

The demon was waiting for Krishna. When Krishna went in,

all the demigods who had gathered to see the fun, hiding in

the clouds, began to cry, Alas! Alas! Suddenly Krishna

began to grow bigger and bigger inside the demons throat.

Aghasura demon coughed and choked. His big fiery eyes

moved in pain and he couldnt breathe anymore. His life-air

burst out of a hole in the top of his head and the demon

dropped dead. So Krishna brought all the boys and calves

with Him safe and sound right out of the mouth of the demon.

After saving His friends from the mouth of Aghasura, Lord

Krishna brought them near the Yamuna River and said, My

dear friends, this is a nice place to eat lunch and play on the

soft sandy beach. Just see the sweet smelling lotus flowers

floating in the water. Just listen to the chirping birds and

peacocks and the whispering of the leaves in the trees. Let

us have our lunch right here. It is already late and we are all

so hungry. The calves can stay nearby to drink water from

the river and eat the soft grass here.

Sitting down on the ground, they began to open their lunch

boxes. Lord Sri Krishna sat down and all the boys sat aroundHim in a circle. In His left hand, He held a lump of food made

with yoghurt, butter, rice and pieces of fruit salad. He was

laughing and joking, enjoying lunch with His friends in

Vrndavana. Above in the sky demigods watched the boys

while flying in their airplanes. Lord Brahma was especially

    enjoying what he saw.

Meanwhile, the calves had walked too deep into the forest. The boys became afraid that their calves were lost, so they

cried out, Krishna! Krishna! Just by calling out Krishna! at

once they felt safe from any danger. Krishna said, My dear

friends, please dont worry. Sit right here. I will look for the

calves Myself while you eat your lunch.

Somehow, Lord Brahma stole all the calves and

cowherd boys and took them to another place where

they slept. Though Lord Krishna looked for them

everywhere, He still could not find them at all. But He

knew that Lord Brahma had taken all the boys and

calves. Krishna thought, How can I go back alone to

Vrndavana? Their mothers will be so sad and worried

if they know their boys are lost.

So Krishna lade Himself into exact copies of each

and every boy and calf. They were just like each and

every one of the lost calves and friends in theirdifferent sizes, colors, faces, clothes, ornaments, and

in whatever they said and whatever they did.

When Krishna went back to the village of Vrndavana,

no one knew what had happened. All the calves went

to their cowsheds and the boys went to their own

mothers and homes. The mothers bathed their

children, put tilaka and ornaments and gave themtheir dinner after the days work, as usual. The calves

came to their mother cows who licked their bodies.

Actually the cows love for their calves and the gopies

love for their boys grew even more just like their

    love for Krishna.

One day, Krishna and Balarama went out with the boys and calves. They saw the cows up on top of Govardhana Hill run down to their calves,

with tails up and full milk bags pouring milk on the ground out of love for their calves. The men up on top of the hill could not stop them and had

to chase them. When they came all the way down and saw their children, they picked them up in their arms very happily. After that they wentback up to the top of Govardhana Hill with their runaway cows. Along the way they thought of their children with tears of love in their eyes.

Balarama saw this and thought, This must be Krishnas trick. Balarama understood that all those boys and calves were only forms expanded

from Krishna. Balarama asked Him, My dear Krishna, why did You turn Yourself into these boys and calves? Where have those other boys

and calves gone? Krishna told Him, They were all stolen by Lord Brahma that day when We had our picnic. I made new cowherd boys and

calves so the people in Vrndavana would not know that they were really all lost.

While Krishna and Balarama were talking, Lord Brahma came back to see the fun made by his stealing the boys and calves. He saw them all

there and thought, I just took all the boys and calves away from here and I know they are still sleeping in another place. So how can the same

boys and calves all be here, playing with Krishna?

Then Brahma saw something very wonderful happen. Krishna changed all those boys and calves into beautifully decorated four-armed Vishnu

forms. Then They all turned back into cowherd boys and cows, though they had just been seen as Vishnu forms. And then he saw Krishna

alone as a small cowherd boy again with a lump of food in His left had. All the Vishnu forms had gone and Krishna was looking for His friends

and calves, just as He was actually doing when they first disappeared.

Lord Brahma got down from his great swan carrier and fell just like a golden stick to offer his respectful obeisances. All flour helmets onBrahmas four heads touched Krishnas little lotus feet. As he remembered the wonderful sight he had seen, he cried happily and fell and rose

again and again for a long time. Seeing the Lord right in front of him, he began to offer wonderful prayers.

While walking, Krishna and Balarama played Their flutes. The boys made the sound of bees and

cuckoos, or danced like the peacocks and the swans in the lakes. Krishna also moved His neck

making His friends laugh. The cows looked at Him and moved happily when He called them by their

names. Sometimes the boys made sounds like tigers and lions and then ran away like the small

animals there, out of fear. When they were tired, they would sit down. Balarama would put His head on

the lap of one of the boys to take a nap, and Krishna would come and massage His legs or fan Him

with a palm leaf fan. When Krishna became tired, sometimes He lay down under a big tree with a root

or the lap of a cowherd boy as His pillow. Some of the boys rubbed His legs and fanned Him, whileothers sang sweetly so He could rest very nicely.

One day, His friends Sridama, Subala and StokaKrishna said, Dear Balarama, Your arms are very

strong. Dear Krishna, You are very expert in killing all kinds of disturbing demons. In the forest called

Talavana, there are big palm trees full of fruits. Some fruits fall out of the trees and some are very ripe

even in the trees. It is a very nice place, but because of a great demon, Dhenukasura, it is not safe to

go there. No one can get the fruits. This demon looks like a donkey and has many demon friends, all

donkeys. They are very strong and we are afraid to go there. Not even animals or birds sleep there

they have all left. We can only just smell the sweet smell of the fruits coming from that place. May beYou are the only one who can kill such demons. Dear Krishna and Balarama, let us go there and enjoy

those sweet fruits. Dont You smell it from here?

Along with His friends, cows and brotherBalarama, Krishna went every day through

the forests of Vrndavana, which were full of

sweet grass, bees, flowers and fruits. There

were chirping birds, clear water lakes and

sweet smelling breezes. The trees, heavy with

fruits, bowed down to touch the ground as if

welcoming Krishna, and that made Him smile.

  • 8/13/2019 Krishnas Childhood Past Times

    25/32

To please His friends, Krishna and Balarama went to the

Talavana forest where Balarama began to shake the trees

with strong arms. All the ripe frits fell down to the ground.

Dhenukasura, that donkey demon living there, heard the

sound of the fruits falling and came running quickly, making

the whole ground shake. The demon kicked Balarama in the

chest with his back legs. At first Balarama did not say

anything and the angry demon kicked Him again even

    harder.

But this time Balarama quickly caught the donkeys legs with

one hand. He wheeled him around and around and threw

him high into a tree-top where he lay dead. The demons

body was so heavy, the tree fell down upon other trees, and

many fell down upon each other. It looked as if a great windy

hurricane had blown down all the trees in the forest one after

    another.

Then, all the friends of Dhenukasura came running. Krishna

and Balarama caught each donkey by the back legs. Theywheeled them around and around and killed them by

throwing them into the palm trees, jut like Dhenukasura.

Because of so many different colors of dead donkeys, it

looked as if clouds of many colors were floating in the trees.

The demigods showered flowers on Krishna and Balarama,

playing music and singing devotional prayers.

A few days after the killing of Dhenukasura, people began tocome into the Talavana forest to collect fruits. The birds and

animals began to live there again without being afraid.

In the summer the boys and cows often drank the water at the Yamuna River. Within the river there was a big lake where the great serpent

known as Kaliya used to live. The water in it got so dirty and poisonous because of the black serpent Kaliya. One hot day, the boys and cowswho went to drink there became sick and fell down dead. But Krishna made them alive again, simply by looking at them.

Then He climbed up a big kadamba tree on the bank of the river. He tightened His belt, flapped His arms like a wrestler, then jumped into the

poisonous lake. When Krishna jumped into the water, the river flooded over the sides as if something very large had fallen into it.

Krishna swam and played around just like a great strong elephant. He splashed around and made a lot of noise until the great black serpent

Kaliya came to see him. With an angry heart Kaliya grabbed Krishna with his strong coils for two hours. The boys became afraid and all the cows

cried to see their beloved Krishna in trouble. Everyone from Vrndavana ran to the river. Mother Yasoda fell to the ground crying because shethought her wonderful child was in terrible trouble.

    27/32

Then Krishna made His body bigger and bigger and bigger, so the

serpent could not hold Him anymore. Kaliya became ever more angry

and made his great hoods even bigger, too. He breathed out terrible

poison and smoke from his nostrils. His eyes blazed like fire. Flamescame from his mouth, while he looked at Krishna, licking his snake

    lips with split tongues.

While Krishna danced on his hoods, Kaliya tried to push Him down with

some of his other hoods. He had about 100 heads, but Krishna took control

of them. He began to kick that demon with His lotus feet, and Kaliya started

vomiting all kinds of garbage, fire, and other poisonous and dirty things. Then

he began to vomit blood because his heads were smashed and his whole

body was being broken by the Lords kicking as He was dancing. Finally he

could not fight with Krishna any longer. He was almost dead and began to

realize that Krishna really is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The serpents wives, known as the Nagapatnis, bowed before the Lord. Wepray that You please excuse Kaliya, our husband. With folded hands Kaliya

humbly prayed to Lord Krishna, I am born as a serpent. Therefore by nature

I am very angry. You are the master of everything. By Your mercy only can I

give up my bad habits. You can punish me or save me, as You like.

Then the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who was acting as a small child,

ordered the serpent in front of everyone, Please go away from here and go

to the ocean. Garuda will not disturb you. Leave this lake right now and take

all your family. Do not poison the Yamuna River, so we can drink its sweet

waters. Kaliyas wives began to offer nice clothes, flowers, garlands, jewels,

ornaments, sandalwood pulp, lotus flowers and nice fruits. In this way they

made the Lord happy and left to go to the ocean.

Every day Krishna played His flute and enjoyed the

Vrndavana forest with His elder brother Balarama and

the cowherd boys. They played hide-and-seek or

played ball with different round fruits. Sometimes they

imitated the forest deer and different kinds of birds or

croaking frogs, and sometimes they went swingingunderneath the trees.

Once while they were playing, a big demon named Pralambasura came to play.

The demon made himself look just like one of the cowherd boys, but, of course,

Krishna knew he was a demon. So he thought of a plan to kill him. Krishna called

all His friends to wrestle together. Some were on Krishnas side and some on

Balaramas side. They began their game and Balaramas boys were the winners.

Just like the other boys, Pralambasura carried Balarama on his back far, far away. The demon was very strong, but he was carrying

Balarama who is as strong as a mountain and very heavy.

Soon Balarama saw that Pralambasura didnt look like a small

cowherd boy anymore. His demon body with gold helmet and

earrings got bigger and bigger, eyes blazing like fire and mouth

flashing sharp teeth. Balarama beat him hard on the head with

His strong fists. Immediately the demon fell down dead with a

smashed head and blood pouring from his mouth. When the

demon crashed to the ground, all the boys rushed over andsaid. Well done! Well done! They all hugged Balarama and all

the demigods showered flowers from the skies.

Meanwhile, the cows had walked far away, deep into the forest to eat the

nice grass. Krishna and Balarama and Their friends followed their

footprints and the path of eaten grass. They heard the cows crying and

Krishna began to call all the cows by their names. The cows moved

happily. But by this time a big forest fire had started all around them and

they were all very, very afraid. The wind was blowing hard and the fire

became even bigger and hotter. They were afraid they would soon be

burnt up by the big fire. All the boys cried, Dear Krishna, help us. Now we

are burning from this blazing hot fire. Krishna looked at His friends to say,

Dont be afraid. Then He quickly swallowed up all the flames of the fire

and saved them all. They knew Krishna was not like any of the other boys,

    but was very, very special.

Seeing the wonderful power of Krishna, Indra, the King of Heaven, called for all the clouds and asked them to stop. There was sunshine again

and the strong winds stopped. Now Krishna was known as the lifter of Govardhana Hill. He said, My dear friends, now you can leave and take

your families and things back to your homes because the danger is now ended. The floods are finished. After they had cleared out everything,

Lord Krishna very slowly put Govardhana Hill down where it had been before. Then, going with His dear friends and animals, He went back to

    His own home.

Indra, the King of Heaven, understood now that he had behaved very badly, and slowly came to say he was sorry to Krishna. My dear Lord, I

was so proud that I thought You were taking my share of the offerings away. Now, by Your grace, I understand that You are the Supreme Lord.

Therefore, my Lord, please forgive me and bless me so that I do not act so foolishly again.

Lord Krishna smiled and said, My dear Indra, I have only stopped your sacrifice to show you that I am always your master. You should always

remember that everything you have is coming from Me. Everyone should always remember that I am the Supreme Lord.

After this, King Indra, the demigods and the surabhi cows worshiped Lord Krishna. They bathed Him with Ganges water and milk from the

surabhi cows, which could give anything you wished for. Everyone sang and danced and the demigods poured showers of flowers from the

sky. The cows flooded the ground with their milk and rivers watered the trees, making nice fruits and flowers of different colors and tastes and

smells. The trees poured drops of honey, and the hills and mountains gave nice plants and jewels. Because of Krishna all these thingshappened very nicely. And so King Indra went back to his heavenly kingdom along with all kinds of demigods through outer space.
