This project speculates and builds on the knowledge of past and present concrete research. The question is, how can the design of a building propagate and expose some of the contemporary innovations and developments in this field today. We were fascinated by modular precast building parts and on-site pours. The question then became, how can we go beyond industry standards and rather than assemble a kit of parts really use the notion of plasticity that the material offers to really celebrate and challenge the one true characteristic of this material: its compressive strength.

Understanding an urban landscape constructed purely by infrastructure, the preconceived notion of a singular ground plane mainly for cars is challenged in order to create a more juxtaposed dialogue between buildings, plazas and layered infrastructure of the city of London. The site chosen for this project is the south bank of the river Thames. A place that is built up parallel to the river, the project challenges this notion by creating a new path perpendicular- celebrating both a high influx of pedestrian traffic commuting through waterloo station and the tourism along the river bank promenade.

    PROPOSAL :

    Infrastructural Landscape

This project proposes a new public path cutting perpen-dicular from Point A (promenade) to B (station) in order to connect the two main pedestrian circulation nodes of the Southbank. A megastructure that pierces through oce, commercial and public parks, rejects the autono-mous object condition and rather introduces a infrastructural landscape that absorbes various public transpotation modes along multiple ground planes and also allows for the oppertunity of future program plug-ins.

Theory of technology tries to trigger discourse on the ben-efits and morality of science and machinery. Robotics and artificial intelligence help us with our cores in daily life and critical moments alike. Yet, as we em-brace it, we do so with fear and distance. Boundaries are set very strictly between the workspace of the machine and workspace of the human who operates it. This project looks into a small scale robot by KIVA SYSTEMS that is designed to make working conditions better in distribution warehouses such as the ones by Amazon. By exploring the possibility of a new warehouse typology that could exist in an urban setting, this project looks at the core members involved in the distribution, packaging and managing the packages. A gas station typology is juxtaposed beneath a vertical warehouse that also includes worker hous-ing and community spaces.

    PROPOSAL: New Modular

    work/ live communities

Urban Setting / Vertical WarehouseIn a urban setting, a warehouse would no longer be just a warehouse for storage of goods but rather a transit terminal for the workers.

Amazon Workers MembershipThe idea of a vertical warehouse is less to stress on the physical form of a warehouse but rather a vertical typology that promotes a layered program that addresses the needs of the various workers associated with an warehouse.

AMAZON Living QuartersA new global community that would live in this new warehouse typology. Allowing them to circulate amoung various Amazon warehouses around the globe as language and culture become secondary in an automated work space.

FedEx Gas StationGround floor of the warehouse is converted into a gas station sort of typology that addresses the needs of the truck drivers.

LOCAL Amazon StoreIn-store pick-ups, Amazon Produce Supermarket, or Kindle Cafe would be facilities the warehouse would provide to take advantage of its new urban setting and its locals.

    Columbus SquareSyracuse, NY, USA

    Prof. Elizabeth Kamall

Once a vibrant public square with the Columbus statue in the center, has turned into a roundabout with vehicle traffic slicing the area into mere pedestrian sidewalks. Further, a vacant spot in one of the adjacent buildings of the square lead to an uncomplete feel. The question then becomes, is it worth fixing the square to its old coherence? A new design for a drawing center is proposed that would challenge the use and revitalization of a public square and rather argues for its own presence as the new civic and cultural icon of the square.

    POMO of the 21st Century-

    serving low-culture with radical aesthetics!

    Primary Advisor: Janette Kim

Looking at the history of public spaces, this thesis critiques the notion of public space as a space of comfort, leisure and consumption. Instead, it looks at the evolution of capitalist societies, reflects on socialist ideals and through the lens of post-modernism argues for the return of public forums. How can public spaces adopt post modernism not just for radical aesthetics (Walt Disney Concert Hall, Frank Gehry) but also be about contextualism (Staatsgalerie Stuttgarg, James Sterling).Using the Manhattan grid as the site- public spaces can be understood as tools for strategized gentrification as in the case of Union Square Park. Or as a tool of exploitation of the real estate developer in the unfair trade-off between POPS and FAR bonuses. The question then becomes, how can the public space serve as a place of its own critique? A space of production, a space of engaged activities and a space on agitation.

    SPACE OF CONGREGATION

Arguing for the notion that public space should not be

disconnected and seen as a third entity side by side with business

and the consumer realm but rather as a medium that

mediates between the two: the forum of the 21st century.

    HALLWAY OF WHISPERS

Rather than exploiting the circulation of the building

(especially that of a high-rise) to impose authority and ownership, how can architecture mutate and

infiltrate these crucial instances of the building to expose and

    aggravate activities of the building?

    STRATEGIESSTATEGIES OFINFILTRATION

Understanding the structure and organization of the building, the interventions are moments of disorder, invitations for squatting and speak to the sub-publics of today.

Different than POPS that are evaluated through a checklist of seating, Air-Conditioning, planters and ground floor manipulation for the pedestrian walker, this public cavity consists of three main elements- element of curiosity, narrative circulation and prescribed activity.

A conscious break from the rigid high-rise order, the public space acts as a conscious aggravator between the existing and the inserted.
