Muhammad (pbuh): Man and ProphetAdil SalahiThe Prophet Muhammad initiated one of the most significant religious and cultural developments in human history, bringing the religion of Islam to the world. Adil Salahi’s compelling biography traces the life of the Prophet Muhammad from his birth and childhood to the triumph of Islam and its hold on Arabia. The author sets this against a fascinating historical backdrop. The Ottomans, from the time of Murad II (r. 1446-1451) onwards,
had sometimes used the title of caliph to strengthen their legitimacy,
but they never made a formal and lasting claim to exercise political
authority over all Muslims, regarding themselves first of all as sultans
or kings. However, these claims were made more strongly in the late
eighteenth century, when, in losing land to the Russians and other
European nations, the title of caliph was emphasised to highlight
the sultan’s spiritual duty towards Muslims now under foreign non-
Muslim rule. It was Abdulhamid II (r. 1876-1909) who made the
strongest claim to the office of caliph again in the hope of shoring
up support for an Ottoman empire that was rapidly loosing ground
to the European powers and to growing nationalist sentiment within
its borders. The caliphate was formally abolished by the nationalist
Turkish leader Kemal Ataturk on 3rd March 1924. Its abolition was
seen a great tragedy for the Muslim community (ummah) as a whole.
For thirteen centuries, since the election of the first caliph, Abu Bakr
al-Siddiq, in the year 632, the caliphate, despite its decline in political
significance after the tenth century, remained the potent symbol of
Muslim unity. The historical unified caliphate under the Rightly-guided
caliphs, the Umayyads and the early ‘Abbasids kept a great symbolic
legitimacy right down to the beginning of the twentieth century and
after, providing a political ideal and a challenge to the misconduct of
Muslim kings and rulers throughout the ages.
The caliphate had come to symbolise the ideal model of political
authority in Islam. Apart from the Sunnis, the Shi‘i Muslims had
established the Fatimid caliphate during the tenth century, a sign that
the institution of the caliphate itself enjoyed near universal prestige
among Muslims of all backgrounds and denominations throughout
the fifteen centuries of Islamic
history. It is for this reason that
the abolition of the caliphate,
even if it had become more a
symbol of unity by the twentieth
century, was still seen as a
great loss by the vast majority
of Muslims. It had widespread
legal and spiritual consequences
for the Muslim community
(ummah): there is no caliph in
whose name the Friday sermon
(khutbah) can be delivered in
mosques throughout the Muslim
world. The loss of the caliph as
a Muslim sovereign authority
was in and of itself a sign of
the sharp decline in Islamic
power and authority by the
twentieth century. The abolition
of the caliphate by a nationalist
government in Turkey showed
that it was no longer regarded as
a relevant institution, a dramatic
change from the Ottomans in
the late nineteenth century who
had attempted to revive the
office of the caliphate to order
to strengthen Muslim unity.

In Ottoman society, poetry, science, history, textiles,
ceramics and architecture all flourished. Islamic ceramics
perhaps reached their heights at Iznik, Turkey, in the
mid-sixteenth century where uniquely seven underglazed
colours were pioneered to decorate tiles with floral
designs, most notably that of the tulip. Similarly, the great
architect Sinan (1491-1588) would pioneer innovative new
mosque designs to better the achievement of Emperor
Justinian’s cathedral of St. Sophia in Istanbul. The dome
of his masterpiece, the Selimiye Mosque at Edirne, was,
in his words, ‘six cubits wider and four cubits deeper than
the dome of St Sophia’ (see page 86).

I discovered this famous Iranian salad when I was at college with some fellow Iranian
students, and loved it and had to fi nd out how it was made. This salad is also part
of Spanish tapas – so it must have made its way along the Silk Route and found its
way into Spanish cuisine! This particular version is thought to have been invented in
Moscow in 1860 by a Russian chef called Lucien Olivier, who cooked at a restaurant
called the Hermitage. It was revolutionary at the time but in today’s culinary climate
it is basically a glorifi ed potato salad. Once you get the hang of it you can experiment
and try out different vegetables and meats, and maybe even fi sh and seafood, but this
salad must always contain dill and pickled gherkins. But don’t add too much spice or
it will turn into something that tastes like coronation chicken.

QDid you know?Dill has many health
benefi ts. It promotes the
digestion, stimulates the
appetite and is good for
ameliorating insomnia,
hiccups, diarrhoea,
dysentery, menstrual
disorders, respiratory
disorders and oral care.
PreparationSoak the chicken in a large bowl or sink with
three tablespoons of salt and the juice of one
lemon; let this soak for at least 15 minutes as
this will clean any grime off the bird. Rinse the
chicken inside and out and set aside in a sieve
or colander for 15 minutes to drain.
Place the chicken in saucepan large enough to
contain it and the eggs. Put enough cold water
into the saucepan so that chicken and eggs are
covered. Add two tablespoons of fresh dill (for
dry, use one teaspoon), and the chopped onion.
Bring it to the boil, and then turn to heat down
and leave to simmer for 40 minutes. Potatoes
can be placed on top in a steamer, which saves
time and energy, or boil them separately for 20
minutes. In a separate small saucepan cook the
frozen mixed vegetables in boiling water for 5
minutes, drain and leave to cool.
Once done, leave the chicken to cool down,
and, when cool enough, take the eggs out and
put them in cold water, as well as letting the
potatoes cool down too. Take the chicken out of
the stock and leave it on a plate to cool. When
cool, peel of the chicken skin and then take all
the fl esh off the bones.
Combine the cooked chicken pieces, mashed
potatoes, carrots, peas, chopped onion and dill
pickle, hard-boiled eggs and capers. Fold slightly
to mix, and then, use a knife to break it all up.
Mix the mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard, lemon
juice, pepper, salt and black pepper and three
tablespoons of fresh dill (or one teaspoon of
dried dill) to make the dressing. Pour over the
salad and mix thoroughly and gently. Cover the
bowl and chill well in the fridge. To serve, put
the salad upon a bed of lettuce leaves on a large
platter. Garnish with black olive slices, sliced
hard-boiled egg, tomato wedges and parsley
sprigs, and sprinkle with a little paprika.

Christian-Muslim relations
What Every Christian Should Know about IslamRuqaiyyah Waris Maqsoodn Updated editionn Simple question and answer style format
Of the many books explaining Islam, few specifically address the concerns and questions of those of a Christian background. Moreover the commonalities between the Abrahamic faiths — Judaism, Christianity and Islam — are too often ignored. Set out in an easy and informative question and answer format, the specific theological points of agreement and difference between Christianity and Islam are addressed, the core religious beliefs and practices of Islam are explained, as well as the most common questions today of Islam and Muslims in an age when there is much conflict and misunderstanding. Islam is best judged not by limitations and transgressions of its most extreme, ignorant, and outlandish followers but by the example of its moderate majority, and Ruqaiyyah Waris Maqsood presents this introduction to the theology and practice of Islam in an attempt to explore some of the false impressions that surround it.
ruqaiyyah Waris Maqsood gained an honours degree in Christian Theology from the University of Hull in 1963. She went on to become a writer and the Head of Religious Studies at various state schools until her retirement in 1996. She converted to Islam in 1986 and now lectures and writes on Islam.

Islamic Economics
First Principles of Islamic EconomicsAbu’l A‘la MawdudiFirst Principles of Islamic Economics collects together the major writings on Islamic economics by Abu’l A‘la Mawdudi (1903-79), one of the leading Muslim intellectuals of the twentieth century. Written between the 1930s and the 1960s, Mawdudi laid down the foundations of modern Islamic economic philosophy. Drawing upon the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah, Mawdudi spelled out major elements of a new paradigm for economic analysis and policy, wherein economic pursuits take place in the context of moral values and directed towards achievement of personal and social objectives. The uniqueness of this approach lies in making efficiency and equity inseparable and interdependent. In an Islamic framework creation and distribution of wealth become instrumental in promoting individual and social well being, enabling the economic discipline to open up pathways to economic development, social justice and human welfare.

The Future of Economics: an Islamic PerspectiveM. Umer ChapraThe Future of Economics raises and tries to answer a number of crucial questions about economics. One of these pertains to the primary task of economics – is it just to analyze and predict or is it also to help a society actualize its vision? Is it possible for economics to help realize the Islamic vision by taking into account only economic variables and analyzing just ‘what is’, as conventional economics does or is it also necessary to discuss the moral, psychological, social, political and historical factors that have led the hiatus between the vision and the prevailing reality, and to suggesta strategy for bridging the gap?
M. umer Chapra is a research advisor at the Islamic Research and Training Institute of the Islamic Development Bank, Jeddah, and author of The Future of Economics and Islam and the Economic Challenge.

Essays in Islamic EconomicsM. Fahim KhanA systematic and rigourous exposition of various aspects of the economics of Islam. These essays not only provide an overview of the various dimensions of Islamic economics but also convincingly establish the viability of the application of these concepts in the contemporary set-up. The analysis presented in this book also establishes the amenability of Islamic economics to scientific investigation and hence its conclusions and analysis directly comparable with what is known as the science of Economics.
The scope of this book as well as the analytical and rigorous approach used in presenting Islamic economics makes this a useful and perhaps the only book so far available that can be utilized as teaching material in graduate programs in universities both in the East and the West where this subject is taught. It fulfills the need of graduate students of economics in that it provides rigorous reading material to assist them in their course work or in pursuing their own research on the subject.
“Precisely the kind of book that Western economists have been waiting for.”— John Presley, former professor of economics, University of Loughborough
M. Fahim Khan is the president of the Islamic Society of Institutional Economics at the International Institute of Islamic Economics, Islamabad, Pakistan, and is the author of ten monographs on Islamic economics.

In the desert surrounding Makkah there were rugged
mountains, hills and caves, and among those caves there
was one named Thawr. Thawr was home to a little spider.
Now, it can be very lonely in the desert, for the days seem
long and the nights seem longer. The little spider often
wished for the company of a friend. Sadly, few animals
stopped by its cave, and even those that did, didn’t stop
for long.
But one day, a pair of young doves flew by. They liked
the look of the cave on Mount Thawr and they decided to
build their nest there. They gathered twigs, grasses and
spider silk, and wove them into the branches of a shrub at
the cave’s mouth. There they were protected from the wind
and sun. It was a perfect place for a pair of nesting doves.
The spider was so happy to have some friends at last!
These were no ordinary friends. They were birds that
could take wing and bring back stories of all they
had seen. Every day the doves would rise high into
the sky and fly into the desert to see what they could
find. Often, they would fly all the way to Makkah.
They would always find grain and crumbs, water, and
interesting tales in Makkah.

The Ka‘ba had not been touched. It stood, even as it
stands today, gleaming and magnifi cent, a doorway to the
Divine Mercy and Power of Allah, whose house it truly is.
The Quraysh of the Hollow, and their leader Abd al Muttalib,
had relied on Allah and He had made them victorious.
The way was open now for the completion of His message
of Unity and Infi nite Mercy and the birth of the Prophet
Muhammad, may Allah bless him and give him peace. And
many years later, after Muhammad, may Allah bless him
and give him peace, was grown up and had become the Last
Prophet, Allah recounted to him some of these happenings:
The Elephant
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
Have you not seen how your Lord
dealt with the Companions of the Elephant?
Did He not make their treacherous plan go astray?
He sent against them fl ights of birds
Striking them with stones of baked clay
Then did He make them like an empty fi eld
of stalks and straw, chewed and strewn.

Cinderella: an Islamic TaleFawzia GilaniCinderella is one of the oldest, best-known, and most loved stories worldwide, with hundreds of cultural variants and re-tellings from ancient Egypt and China to the present day. In this version we follow the trials and tribulations of the sweet, gentle, and pious Zahra when her parents die and she is left at the mercy of an uncaring stepmother and stepsisters. This is a well-crafted Islamic version of the classic tale in which faith, goodness, and prayer are rewarded in the end. The charming, richly detailed illustrations of Shireen Adams, set in medieval Andalusia, help bring the text to life.
“It’s easy to feel a sense of peace after completing Fawzia Gilani’s. This humble version of the classic fairy tale is a gentle reminder that victory comes as much from a peaceful soul as a beautiful dress and a dramatic confrontation.” - Fawzia Gilani
Fawzia has worked as a teacher, librarian and school principal in the UK, USA and Canada since 1993. She is the author of thirty children’s books, mostly on the topic of Eid. Currently studying children’s Islamic Literature at University, she also works as an educational consultant. When Cinderella felt lonely she would take the crumbs she had saved
from the table and feed the birds. She would watch them chirp and
peck as she washed the dishes.
When her kitchen work was done she would sometimes join them,
quietly singing a song of her own. Cinderella spent her whole day
working. When she was not cooking, washing, ironing or dusting she
would find a little time to read her books in her tiny, little attic, sitting
on her old, thin mattress.
Cinderella would wake early at fajr before sunrise
and do her morning prayers. Then she would sit
and read the Qur’an. When she had finished she
would prepare breakfast for her stepmother and
stepsisters. Then the poor orphan would wash the
dishes, wipe the counters, make the beds, sweep
and mop the floors. At noon she would offer her
midday prayers and quickly eat her lunch.

Suddenly Snow White turned and saw the huntsman walking towards her. Snow White began to
tremble with fear.
“Child, I have been ordered by your stepmother to kill you.”
“Huntsman,” cried Snow White, “please don’t kill me!” She pleaded and pleaded with the huntsman to
spare her life, in return she promised she would run far, far away and never again return to her home.
But the huntsman would not listen. “If I do not bring back your heart and liver, your wicked
stepmother will kill me!” he said.
Tears fell from Snow White’s eyes as she raised her hands in prayer, she recited the words of Prophet
Noah. “Dear Allah,” “‘Indeed I am overpowered, so help me’ please.” (54:10)
The vile stepmother ordered the huntsman
to take Snow White deep into the forest
and kill her. “Be sure to bring me back her
heart and liver!”she instructed . “Or it will
be the worst for you!”
The huntsman looked for Snow White and
found her outside the masjid, placing her
Qur’an in her bag. He watched as Snow White
walked towards the forest picking some flowers.
He looked around to see if anyone was near. He
then took out his bow and arrow.
