Fundraiser Guide
We asked Grace to write about how BBC Children in Need’s support has changed her life. Here’s her story in her own words…
Hi, I’m Grace. I’m 12 and live with my mum and my assistance dog Scooby. I was born with Cerebral Palsy. This means I need to use a wheelchair when I go out, and that there are some things I can’t do on my own.
I first saw Dogs for the Disabled while watching BBC Children in Need in November 2010. I knew that I wanted a dog to help me so I applied and started to sponsor a dog called Scooby.
Later I was given my own dog and it was Scooby! They have never matched a dog to a sponsor before so this makes him extra, extra special.
I’ve had Scooby for a year now. He helps me get undressed, open doors and fetch things. I didn’t like going outside before because people ignored me which made me angry and very sad.
But now people always stop to speak to me and ask questions about Scooby, which makes me very happy. I’d do anything for Scoobs, my best friend.
BBC Children in Need’s grant of £82,000 to Dogs for the Disabled over three years funds the post of Kerry, the Children’s Instructor. She partners disabled children with trained assistance dogs at their national training centre in Banbury near Oxford.
Why we’re here
