The The LagoonLagoon of of Venice Venice ……… is a coastal wetland in a continual state of instability, communicating with the sea through inlets, in such away that the inside water movement is governed by thetide
the lagoon morphology and existence depends on thebalance between the of solid material brought by thesea or the drainage basin rivers and the erosive forcesof waves and tides of the upper Adriatic (the highest inall of the Mediterranean)the sea – rivers balance guarantees the lagoonbrackish water environment and the sea inflow biascan be considered today one of the main risk in theevolution of the lagoon basinabout 78% (420 km2) of the lagoon surface is coveredby expanses of water cut by a dense network ofchannels of varying depth

TheThe Lagoon of Venice Lagoon of Venice … …… presents wide tides level variation, which aredetermined by astronomical and meteorological factors
low pressure and the Scirocco and the Bora windsaccentuate the high tides, causing the Upper Adriaticto swell uphigh pressure and winds from the north-west cancause the water in the lagoon to lower to such anextent as to leave the rios and canals of Veniceexposed

TheThe Lagoon of Venice Lagoon of Venice … …… survives only if
a balance exists between sediment accumulation anderosion (through river loads, wave motion, coastalcurrents)
• If the accumulation prevails, a lagoon tends to silt up,and turn to dry land
• If the loss prevails, the erosion grows up and the lagoontends to become a marine environment

TheThe Lagoon of Venice Lagoon of Venice … …and if
subsidence and eustasy predominate over theaccumulation of solid materials
• Subsidence (lowering of ground level) can occur becauseof
• natural reasons (tectonic deformations of strata deepbeneath the earth or the progressive consolidation causedby the geostatic loads of fine alluvial deposits, like silt andclay)
• human-induced causes, the most common of which is theintense extraction of underground water supplies, ormethane in the upper Adriatic
• Eustasy (variation in sea level) can occour because ofgeological period
• during the coldest periods precipitation is held back in theform of ice and (the level of the sea lowers)
• during the hottest periods precipitation is in the form ofwater and (the level of the sea increases)

AboutAbout the the lagoonslagoonsoptionsoptions……
The unstable equilibrium persists if erosionand sedimentation compensate for each otherThe lagoon tends to silt up if the solidsediments accumulation prevails (the Po deltacase)The lagoon is transformed into a lough if theerosive forces prevail (the current tendency)

Lagoon morphologyLagoon morphologyMudd flats
soft land areas with no vegetation which arenormally underwater, emerging only duringparticular tidal conditions (low tides duringspring tide cycles)

Lagoon morphologyLagoon morphologySalt marshes
consistent ground areas which are almostalways above water and are only sometimessubmerged
• enhance water exchange• lessen the action of wave motion and provide a
home for both a wide variety of plants and animals(brackish environment)
are important because of their role inregulating lagoon hydrodynamics

Lagoon morphologyLagoon morphologyChannels (principal, secondary and tidal creeks)
surface area of 67.30 square kmdepth between 15 m (Malamocco-Marghera Channel) and 1-2 mthe sea –lagoon water exchange occurs for the most partthrough the lagoon channels which branch off from the threeinletsthe natural channels which have a winding path, the artificialstraight channels have been dug over the yearssmaller channels branch off main channels to becomesmaller and smaller and ever more winding: tidal creekswhich cross salt marshes to finish in rainwater ponds, whichare composed of brackish rainwater

Lagoon morphologyLagoon morphologyIslands
(excluding the coastal-strip islands) cover 8% of the totalsurface area of the lagoonthe inhabitants of the lagoon gave the islands precise anddifferent functions over the centuries
• They were used for military bases, convents and hospitals• Today several of them are completely abandoned
The natural islands are either the remains of dunes, that isresidual areas of old coastal strips (as in the case of Vignoleor Sant'Erasmo) or areas created by the depositing andaccumulating of the solid materials transported by the rivers(as in the case of Burano or Torcello)The artificial island was recalimed durig the 19th century

Lagoon ecologyLagoon ecologyVegetation of salt marshes and brackish water wetlandsSalt marshes environment select halophytic speciesthe fresh and brackish water mix constrain the phyto-coenosis distribution: rushes and reeds, which are linkedto a more fresh water environment, tend to colonize theareas nearest to the edge of the lagoon

Lagoon ecologyLagoon ecologySome Some peculiar species ofpeculiar species of the the Lagoon of Lagoon ofVeniceVenice
Salicornia veneta colonises the lowerareas of the salt marshes, and is one ofthe first plants to grow each year
Puccinella palustris (Cord grass) is adominant element of salt marshenvironments and can withstand periodicinundation

Limunium serotinum is typicallyperiodically inundated by the tide, andits flowers colour the salt marshes untilthe late summerLimonium bellidifolium (Sea lavender)lives along the edges of salt marshes inthe most arid salty soils, and flowerswith light greyish-pink colours fromJune to JulySpartina maritima grows on the lowestedges of salt marshes and tidal creeksin heavily salty soils frequentlyinundated by the tides

During the 16th century two opposing arguments aroseconcerning the preservatione of the Lagoon
Alvise Cornaro gave greater importance to the economicalperspective of the lagoon areas reclaiming and developingthe mainlandCristoforo Sabbadino considered the rivers as the primarycause for both the growth of swamps and the silting up ofthe lagoon, and propsed to distance all major river mouthsfrom the lagoon basin
His argument influenced the large-scale works which werecarried out in the following centuries

First conclusionFirst conclusion
the human activity has strongly influenced the evolution of theLagoon of Venice, and the lagoon would not exist today withoutthe human activity
the ecological/cultural legacy of the Venice lagoon landscapecomes from the co-evolution of non human and human processesat different scale
the human processes can be (in my opinion have to be)considered as ecological processes in a landscape ecologyperspective
why need to consider these dynamics to develop soundevaluations in a decision process for planning or design purpose

The evaluationsThe evaluations
an evaluation model has been built up utilizing someindexes (the less redundant and the most robust)hierarchically connectedthe model is built to give information at the singleecosystem (ecotope) level, and at the ecosystemmosaic level (the Certosa Landscape)the low level indexes have the same evaluation dignity(they have the same potential influence for the finaljudgement construction)the hierarchical structure it’s an understanding tool ofthe problem and permit to rebuild the significance ofthe evaluation process (clearness of the value)

ConclusionsConclusions the landscape dynamic shows that
the cultural weight has to be accounted for the destiny ofthe Certosa (as for all the Lagoon)the pattern (lagoon rural configuration) remains constant for+- 7 centuries, and then changes abruptly (low diversityduring the military- industrial period, high diversity after theabandonment)the natural (floro-faunistic) and ecological (reproducibility, rareness) values of the single ecotopes and of the wholeIsland are generally not very highthe highest ecological interest lies on the scientific evolutionanalysis of some ecotopes (unknown)the cultural values of the single ecotopes and of the wholeIsland) are generally low (real world condition) but high fromthe planing expectation point of view
