ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF
JOHN J. CONBOYAthletic Director
John J. (Jack) Conboy was namedLa Salle Athletic Director on January
3, 1969, succeeding James J. Henry,
who retired January 1 after 35 years
as Explorer A.D.
Conboy, 46, graduated from La
Salle in 1950. He recently retired
from the U.S. Army, after 20 years
service, with the rank of Lieutenant
Colonel. A veteran of three wars
(World War II, Korea and Vietnam),
Conboy served on the ROTC staff at
La Salle from 1960 to 1964.
Conboy was a member of St. Joseph's Prep's last city championship
football team in 1939. After three years of World War II service in
Europe, Conboy enrolled at Georgetown where he played football for
two years before transferring to La Salle.
He was assistant football coach at St. Joseph's Prep from 1948
to 1950. He also coached Army football and basketball teams in Europe
and Hawaii and organized a triathlon team at La Salle which produced
three former members of the U.S. Army modern pentathlon team—Don
Walheim, Bill Conroy and Gary McNulty.
Conboy, who holds an MBA degree in Industrial Management from
Temple University, resides in Drexel Hill with his wife, Anne, and four
children.
PAUL W. WESTHEADHead Basketball Coach
Paul W. Westhead, now in his sec-
ond year as head coach at La Salle,
directed last year's Explorers to
twenty victories in twenty-seven
games. Westhead's 1970-71 five wonten consecutive contests during the
season, upset NCAA semifinalist
Western Kentucky and NCAA finalist
Villanova, and participated in the
National Invitational Tournament.
A great defensive player at St.
Joseph's College, Westhead was of-
ten matched with success against an
opponent's top scorer by his coach,
Dr. Jack Ramsay. He returned to his alma mater in 1968 as assistant
athletic director and coach of St. Joseph's '69-70 freshman teamwhich compiled a 21-2 record, best in the school's history.
Previously, Westhead had established himself as one of the finest
young coaches in the area at Cheltenham High School. In four years
(1964-68) at the suburban Philadelphia school, Paul gradually built a
winning tradition. In 1968, he took his squad to the P.I.A.A. playoffs
for the first time in the school's history and advanced all the way to
the state finals.
Westhead received his bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's in 1961,
and a master's degree in English from Villanova, in 1963.
He has done work towards his Ph.D. at Temple University, has served
on the English faculty both at Cheltenham and St. Joseph's, and has
taught English at La Salle.
Westhead, 32, his wife, Catherine, and three children live in suburban
Drexel Hill, Pa.
JOSEPH C. O'CONNORAssistant Basketball Coach
Joseph C. O'Connor, who had
coached Bishop Eustace Prep's bas-
ketball teams to a fantastic 69-6
record over his last three seasons,
made a successful debut as Paul
Westhead's assistant in 1970-71,
and guided the Explorer frosh to a
fine 14-8 season.
The 30-year-old coach, who puts
great stress on fundamentals, had
been on the staff at suburban NewJersey's Bishop Eustace for seven
years, the last four as head coach.
In 1968-69, Eustace went all the way to win the New Jersey State
Championship. Joe's overall won-loss record as head coach was 78-17.
O'Connor, a resident of Upper Darby, is a 1963 graduate of St.
Joseph's College with a bachelor's degree in history.
PAUL GALLAGHERAssistant Basketball Coach
Paul Gallagher, a former member of the
Explorer varsity and later head coach at
Monsignor Bonner High School, returns as
a La Salle assistant under Paul Westhead
in 1971-72.
The 1964 La Salle graduate was a re-
serve on the Explorer varsity for two
I years. He served as assistant coach at
\^ ^S M Bonner before becoming head coach at
p- St. James High, in Chester in 1966-67.
'^^ ^^ Gallagher returned to Bonner as head
coach the following year. His three year
won-loss record of 57-19 included a fine 24-6 mark in 1969-70. The
Bonner quintet finished first in the Catholic League's southern division
and third in the playoffs last year, capping the season by winning the
Alhambra Catholic Invitational, in Cumberland, Md.
Gallagher, 28, was co-captain of Bonner's city championship court
team in 1960.
Paul will continue to maintain a securities business with the Equity
Funding Corp. He, his wife, Sue, and their two children live in sub-
urban Havertown, Pa.

DAVID A. (LEFTY) ERVINAssistant Basketball Coach
David A. (Lefty) Ervin is in his
fourth season as assistant basket-
ball coach.
While a student at La Salle, Lefty
was a two-sport standout and co-
captain of the Explorer basketball
and baseball teams in his senior year.
In 1968, he was honored with
the Joseph Schmitz Jr. Award as
the senior who best exemplified the
high traditions of La Salle College
in loyalty, sportsmanship and courage.
A starter on the basketball varsity as a sophomore, Ervin spent most
of the next two years as the Explorers' sixth man and gained a reputa-
tion as one of the outstanding substitutes in the nation. He scored
a total of 756 points for his career.
Ervin played baseball and basketball at Abington High School before
graduating in 1963. In addition to his duties at La Salle, Ervin also
serves on the faculty at Archbishop Ryan High School. Dave and his

THE ATHLETE
The young man who accepts the exciting challenge of representing
the Explorers on basketball courts throughout the nation will be one
who recognizes that he is supplementing his classroom experience
with athletic participation. He will learn to discipline himself toward
achieving a goal; to work in close association with other men, and
to acquire judgment and responsibility. As such a student athlete,
he will be, above all, a gentleman.
Explorer sophs (from left) Steve Baruffi, Frank Doyle, Jim Haggarty, Joe DiCocco,Frank Moffatt, and Joe Rapczynski gather 'round coach Paul Westhead (with

PROSPECTS FOR THE 1971-72 SEASON
By Coach Paul Westhead
Sophomore talent will have a major role in our plans for the coming
season since seven seniors, including 6-7 All-America Ken Durrett (27.0
ppg.-11.9 rpg.) and 6-3 Bob Fields (22.4 ppg.) have been graduated from
our highly successful 70-71 squad. I have every confidence that our
sophomores have the ability to do well and help us win, but it may take
some time for our untested varsity members to jell.
Of course, we'll look to 6-4 Jim Crawford, our most experienced
returnee. Jim was one of the Big Five's outstanding sophs last year,
averaging over 12 ppg. and 8 rpg. In addition, 6-7 junior John Maull,
who picked up some valuable playing time in a reserve role last season,
will be another key figure. Two juniors, 6-0 Tom Fuhs, leading scorer
on the '69-70 frosh team, and 6-2 Bill Fox, a good shooter, round out
our returning lettermen.
We're hoping that two soph guards, 6-4 swingman Frank Doyle (16.8
ppg.—frosh) and 6-3 Jim Haggarty (16.3 ppg.—frosh) will resupply someof our graduated firepower. Under the boards, two strong and steady
forwards, 6-6 Joe DiCocco (12.3 ppg.-14.1 rpg.—frosh) and 6-5 Joe
Rapczynski (10.1 ppg.—frosh), will see plenty of action.
Our defense rated 19th in the nation a year ago, and since we feel
this was one of our success factors, we'll again put great stress on mandefense.
With the 'Husker Classic and the Quaker City Tourney on our Decem-ber schedule, our young team will have to mature quickly. Throughoutthe season, we'll be aiming to surprise some of our nationally-ranked
opponents.
6-0 junior Tom Fuhs (no. 14) demonstrates perfect jump shot form during
Palestra battle with Duquesne last season.
Jim Crawford (no. 23) makes good use of well-set pick by 6-7 junior John Maull
(no. 31) in 74-53 romp over Loyola of New Orleans at the Palestra.
MEET THE EXPLORERS(*) Returning Lettermen
Steven J. Baruffi
Sophomore 19 6-1 170 Vineland, N.J.
Steve is a determined competitor who
saw considerable action for the frosh in a
reserve role last year. Quick and aggressive,
Steve, whose best effort was a 12-point
performance against the Mercer County
Community College, could press for playing
time as a guard this season. At Vineland
High, Steve was a standout cross-country
and baseball team member, besides playing
some steady basketball for coach Joe Rich-
ards before graduating in 1970. Biology
major.
*James S. Crawford (Captain)
Junior 20 6-4 180 Haddonfield, N.J.
Jim established himself as one of the
Big Five's outstanding sophs in 70-71, giv-
ing the Explorers a consistent 12 points
and 8 rebounds per game. The "Skyman,"
who has developed all phases of his game,
had super efforts against Miami (20 points,
11 rebounds), Pennsylvania (18 points, 13
rebounds), Creighton (19 points, 13 re-
bounds), and Duquesne (24 points, career
high). An all-around athlete at Bishop
Eustace prep, Jim captained his school's
1969 New Jersey State basketball champions (coach Joe O'Connor) in
his senior year. Business major.

Joseph S. DiCocco
Sophomore 19 6-6 190 Upper Darby, Pa.
Despite missing the last five games due
to an injury, Joe led the La Salle yearlings
in rebounding (239, 14.1 rpg.), while aver-
aging over 12 ppg. His talent was most
evident against the Villanova frosh (20
points, 18 rebounds), Mercer County Com-
munity College (19 points, 18 rebounds),
and the West Chester frosh (14 points, 20
rebounds). A rugged board man, Joe played
basketball under coach Paul Gallagher at
Monsignor Bonner, and made second team
lor year (1970). Business major.
Frank J. Doyle
Sophomore 19 6-4 190 Glenolden, Pa.
Possessor of that unique combination of
size and skill, Frank led the 70-71 frosh in
scoring (16.8 ppg.), hitting over 50% from
the floor and 80% from the charity stripe.
His top games were 29 points against the
Rider frosh, 25 points against the Drexel
frosh, and 20 points against Maryland's
highly-rated frosh. He was also named
MVP of the St. Edmund's Tourney (Wil-
mington, Del.), which was won by the La
Salle frosh. Frank played for coach Jim
Purcell at Cardinal O'Hara, captaining the
year, and being selected a second team All
1970 quintet in his senior
Catholic. Accounting major.
Edward G. Forrest
Junior 20 6-3 190 Willow Grove, Pa.
An outstanding southpaw pitcher for coach
Gene McDonnell's Explorer nine over the
past two seasons, Ed will taste his varsity
basketball action this year. The 6-3 bullish
guard, who averaged 16.1 ppg. for the
'69-70 frosh, is a potential swingman. At
Upper Moreland High, Ed complemented a
fine baseball career by captaining coach
Cecil Mosenson's five, and making All-Sub-
urban in his senior year (1969). Business
major.
Junior
*William D. Fox
20 6 2 162 Philadelphia, Pa.
An excellent long-range shooter, Bill saw
only limited duty for the varsity last year,
but he's a definite offensive threat. Bill
exhibited some fine floor play for the '69-70
frosh, and his attitude and hard work have
solidified his game. A relentless scrapper,
Bill played at La Salle High (coach Obie
O'Brien) before graduating in 1969. Busi-

*Thomas J. Fuhs
Junior 20 6-0 170 Drexel Hill, Pa.
A hustling guard, Tom took a back seat
to three senior backcourtmen a year ago,
but the 1969-70 frosh scoring leader (16.2
ppg.) will be heard from this season. Al-
though he took only ten shots from the
field all last season, Tom canned nine of
them. The 1969 Monsignor Bonner graduate
captained both the basketball (coach Paul
Gallagher) and the baseball teams in his
senior year, and was honored by the Mark-
ward Club as the Catholic League's "unsung
basketball hero." Accounting major.

James B. Haggarty
Sophomore 19 6-3 160 Drexel Hill, Pa.
Jim is an exceptional guard who averaged
over 16 ppg. for the frosh, and contributed
58 assists (second highest). A devastating
shooter, Jim scored 33 points against the
Textile frosh, and 24 points on two occa-
sions against the Penn frosh. A 1970 grad-
uate of Monsignor Bonner, Jim was a first
team All-Catholic selection (coach Paul Gal-
lagher) in addition to being named MVP of
the 1970 Alhambra Catholic Invitational in
Maryland. English major.
Kenneth E. KennedyJunior 20 6-1 165 Glassboro, N.J.
Although he did not log any playing time
last year, Ken was a late season addition
to the La Salle varsity. His basketball in-
stinct and desire make him a definite asset
to the Explorers' guard corps. A smooth
floor general, Ken led his Glassboro High
team (coach (John Aveni) to the Olympic
Conference title, before graduating in 1969.
Liberal Arts major.

*John W. Maull
Junior 20 6-7 185 Runnemede, N.J.
Despite a lack of high school playing
experience, John was in the thick of action
for the La Salle five a year ago as a reserve
center. John is an excellent shooter for a
big man, and his career high of 12 points
against Lafayette launched his teammates
into the MAC finals last season. A 1969
graduate of St. Joseph's High in Camden,
he also tabbed 9 points against Rider, and
8 points against Canisius. Business Admin-
istration major.

Frank X. Moffatt
Sophomore 19 5-10 145 Cherry Hill, NJ.
Frank was a pleasant surprise to last
year's frosh, averaging over 9 ppg., and
leading the team in assists (68). A clever
ballhandler, Frank thrives on pressure
shooting an amazing 92.9% from the free
throw line (78 for 84) last year. He also
distinguished himself with 20 points against
the American frosh, 17 points against the
Textile frosh, and 16 points against the
Penn frosh. A track star at Bishop Eustace
prep, Frank played his basketball for coach
ng in 1970. Business major.
Joseph M. Rapczynski
Sophomore 19 6-5 205 Philadelphia, Pa.
Nicknamed "Rabbi," Joe is a powerful
forward who averaged 10 ppg. and 7 rpg.
for the 70-71 frosh. He is quite mobile,
and complements his offensive thrust with
tough defense. Joe's highlights were 18
points against the Temple frosh, and 16
points and 14 rebounds against the Penn
frosh. An All-Catholic selection in his senior
year, Joe captained the 1970 North Catholic
five under coach Frank Dougherty. Liberal

THE EXPLORERS' 1970-71 SEASON
IN REVIEW
Dedication, desire, hustle and pride were the characteristics of the 1970-71
La Salle College varsity basketball team whose achievement of twenty magicvictories can be attributed to the great first year coaching of Paul Westhead, and thirteen athletes who adopted "playing to exhaustion" as a way of life.
A unanimous preseason pick for last in the Big Five, the Explorers shocked
the "experts" by streaking through fifteen of their first sixteen contests.
When Westhead's five captured the Charlotte Invitational Tourney in late
December some eyebrows were raised, but a victory at Tulsa, a massacre of
powerful Western Kentucky, and a rare victory at Niagara Falls, convinced
observers that this La Salle club was for real.
Then in the first half of a rout of Canisius, 6-7 All-America Ken Durrett
sprained his right knee, and the prophets who originally forecast a disastrous
season for the Explorers had their second chance. But this La Salle teamwas not about to fold; they showed their greatness, their heart, which is
unsurpassed in the history of athletics at the 109-year-old Christian Brothers'
institution.
"Win for the Big Guy" became the inspirational force behind superhumanteam efforts that shocked bitter rival Villanova (73-69) and rugged Creighton
(64-61). The Explorers had battled their way into the National Invitation
Tourney, and established themselves as one of the all-time great teams at
La Salle.
Above all this past season stood 6-7 senior captain Ken Durrett, everyone's
All-America and the Middle Atlantic Conference Most Valuable Player. Ken
established himself as the greatest per-game scorer in the history of La Salle
College with 1679 points in 71 games for a 23.6 ppg. career average. He had
40 point outbursts against Miami, Niagara and Lafayette and wrote a newLa Salle and Palestra scoring mark with 45 points against Western Kentucky
in one of the greatest performances ever witnessed in Philadelphia. CoachWesthead found Ken's leadership quality and splendid personality off the court
equally impressive.
Bobby Fields, great all-around guard, gave the Explorers a consistent twenty
points per game and solid defense. In the absence of the injured Durrett, Bobdestroyed Villanova with a 30-point, 12-rebound performance, and added 39
points (career high) against Rider, and 33 points against St. Joseph's. In twoseasons, he scored 1016 points, and entered the 1000-point club in the NIT.
Durrett and Fields, however, each of whom entered the pro ranks, were far
from the entire La Salle show. 6-0 senior Greg Cannon ran the Explorers'
patterned offense with precision and cleverness, while leading his team in
"unsung" categories of steals and assists. Ronny Kennedy, 6-5 senior defensive
ace, confronted opponents' big men such as LIU's Walter Jones, WesternKentucky's 7-0 Jim McDaniels, Tulsa's 6-10 Dana Lewis, and Villanova's 6-8
Howard Porter with unbelievable success. Jimmy Crawford, La SaMe's 6-4
"sky man," averaged over 12 ppg. and added a solid 8 rpg. as one of the
Big Five's super sophs.
Unheralded 6-3 senior Bobby Walsh gained the nickname "Hondo" with
crucial points in key situations as the Explorers' sixth man early in the year,
but when Durrett was injured he stepped into a starting guard role like a
veteran. Bob scored 147 points, mostly as a reserve, after totaling 20 points
in two previous seasons.
Solid backup performance through the year came from 6-7 soph John Maull,
a fine shooter, 5-11 hustler Tom Fuhs, and 6-2 senior Bill Michuda, who missedthe first half of the season due to a knee operation.
Spirited 6-5 senior Jorge Garayta, 6-5 junior Jeff Piccone, and a pair of 6-2
sophs, Bill Fox and Ken Kennedy, also contributed their strength and talent
in substitute roles.
For the seven Explorers' seniors there was a feeling of accomplishment,a sense of fulfillment, in their 1970-71 happening, and for La Salle College,
there was the realization of the Westhead era, spirited, competitive andexciting basketball, win or lose.
36
Ken Durrett (no. 33) was ready for this rebound, but Ron Kennedy (center)
bagged this short jump shot in La Salle's 63-58 victory over Temple. Kennedy, the Explorers' 6-5 defensive stopper, completed a fine two-season career.
Playmaker Greg Cannon (no. 22) is about to feed Bobby Walsh (no. 11) for anuncontested lay-up as the Durrettless La Salle five upset Creighton. The 6-0Cannon and the 6-3 Walsh came out of nowhere to have great senior seasonsfor the Olneyites.

THE LA SALLE
STORY
Salle College is now in its 109th year of service to higher educa-
and the Philadelphia community. Ihe college has been coeduca-
tional in the evening division since February, 1967, and in its day
school since September, 19/0.
La Salle was founded March 20, 1863 by the Brothers of the Christian
Schools and derives its name from the founder of the Christian Brothers,
St. John Baptist de La Salle. By 1929, having outgrown three previous
Philadelphia locations, the campus was moved to its present site at
20th Street and Olney Avenue in the East Germantown Section of the
city.
Since 1945, La Salle has experienced dramatic growth. Before the
closing days of the war, La Salle had an enrollment of less than 500
attending only day classes in two original buildings. Today, a total of
6,600 Day and Evening Division students attend La Salle. Plant facilities,
valued at only $1.5 million in 1946, have today reached nearly $20million. There are 24 buildings on the 40-acre campus and further
expansion is well under way in the form of a new classroom building
and an athletic facilities structure.
Ten modern residence halls accommodate 800 out-of-town students.
A $2 million, three-story College Union Building, completed in 1959,
includes a Little Theater as well as dining halls, assembly rooms, ball-
room and other student facilities.
The $2.5 million Holroyd Science Center, opened in 1960, houses
lecture rooms and laboratory facilities for study and research in
Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Psychology. The David Leo
Lawrence Memorial Library, built in 1952, contains 168,000 volumes and
periodical files of some 700 journals, and a new library is being planned.
Additional educational areas are located on a 52-acre campus in
Elkins Park and on an 80-acre site in Springfield Township. The ArmyROTC program, initiated in 1950, is available to freshmen, who mayapply for ROTC scholarships for advance studies. Nearly 350 students,
including those in advanced courses, are enrolled in the program.
La Salle's Day and Evening Division offer degree programs in Arts and
Sciences and Business Administration. The 350-member La Salle faculty
is composed of Christian Brothers, priest and lay professors.
