“Through the ages, people have claimed dogs as one of their closest, and best, companions. Of all the domesticated animals, dogs serve the widest ar-ray of roles: protector, helper, lifesaver, and com-panion. Dogs are incred-ible friends to people, and they have been compan-ions through centuries. The relationship between dogs and people is deep and old.”

“In 2017, there were about 89.7 million pet dogs in the United States. That is a lot of dogs to keep healthy and happy, and the importance of dog grooming is a good place to start. All dogs need some grooming, though the type and amount var-ies by breed. Clean fur and proper grooming help eliminate pests and main-tain the health and well-ness of your companion pet.”

So, if you have a pet dog how do you care for it? Some may prefer bath-ing and caring for the pets needs at home. However, others may prefer taking their pet to a professional groomer. A professional groomer does more than merely shampoo and cut the dogs hair. They can also be a first line of iden-tifying potential health problems that should be referred to a veterinarian as well as advising clients as to the proper care of their pet.

However, Dee’s im-pact and influence on pet care was more than merely grooming dogs. She was an advocate for dogs in many respects. In the early 1970s she was instrumental in start-ing the Fairmont Kennel Club. She would educate new dog owners on how to properly care for their pets. She would advise and help new dog breed-ers with their first litter of pups. She was involved with dog shows and as-sisting those new to dog shows how to groom and prepare their dogs for the show. In addition, it was not uncommon for dog

Dee, a Trimont na-tive, attended school in Trimont but graduated from Mountain View High School in Mountain View, California. Following graduation, she returned to Minnesota and attend-ed Macalester College. After college, she was em-ployed as a stewardess for TWA. While working for TWA, she met and mar-ried her husband, Dr. M. E. McCauley. They moved to Dayton, Ohio, where she became active in pro-fessional dog handling as well as judging. This even-tually led her to open the first licensed school for dog grooming in Ohio.

After her husband passed away in 1969, she moved to Fairmont in 1972 and later opened her pet grooming salon on Blue Earth Avenue in 1973. To get her business up and running, she need-ed to purchase a building for her salon. However, back in 1973 she found that loans were difficult, if not impossible, to be had by single women. Conse-quently, through the help of a relative cosigning, she was able to secure the loan and purchase the building on Blue Earth Avenue for her business.

Her grooming services included combing out the dog’s hair, trimming the nails, bathing the dog, dry-ing the dog, checking the ears, and clipping the coat following the bath. An-other important aspect a professional groomer will accomplish is checking for any potential health concerns that may not be evident to the owner and informing the pet owner about them. Dee also stressed the importance of gaining the pet’s trust first to have a successful grooming experience.

Delicious Peaches Generally this time of year we are enjoying the treat of Colorado Peaches! We did buy good peaches at the beginning of the peach season but that was a short lived treat. We were told by the local gro-cery stores that they received a very limited supply of Colorado peaches this year because of weather conditions in Colorado. We tried another brand that were a dismal disappointment. Then to my surprise I discovered that peaches can actually be grown in Minnesota, probably not by just anyone, but my friends Mary and David Segar have a peach tree and harvested their first crop of peaches. Mary said they are delicious! Who would have guessed?! We are too old to try to plant a peach tree, we prob-ably wouldn’t live long enough to see the first har-vest but some of you could try! Peach Muffins 1/2 cup butter3/4 cup sugar1 egg, room temperature1 1/2 cup flour1 1/2 tsp. baking powder1 tsp. vanilla1/2 cup yogurt or sour cream1 cup chopped peaches, small pieces1 cup chopped pecans ( optional ) Cream butter and sugar, add egg, beat well, add flour, baking powder, then beat in vanilla and yo-gurt. Lastly fold in peaches and pecans. Divide be-tween 12 greased muffin tins bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Stay safe and have a good week!

On Aug. 21, Cayden Fischer of Truman, joined Buena Vista Uni-versity’s largest fresh-men class in seven years in the Convoca-tion celebration. More than 250 freshmen and transfer students were welcomed by return-ing BVU students, staff members, and coaches who donned masks and handed out water in a streamlined move-in process on the first day of Welcome Week on campus.

Each member of the

incoming class visited with BVU Interim Presi-dent Dr. Brian Lenz-meier and his wife, Bet-sy, before proceeding through the University’s famous Victory Arch, a Beavers tradition for decades. The next time each student will pass through the Victory Arch is on their gradu-ation day as the class proceeds toward its Commencement cer-emony. Buena Vista University is headquar-tered in Storm Lake, Iowa.

The Schmeeckle Foundation recently ap-proved grants totaling $79,700 for community enhancement projects in Martin County, Min-nesota.

These grants support the Schmeeckle Founda-tion’s three core focus ar-eas: early childhood care and education, serving the disabled and elderly, and promoting the arts.

The Schmeeckle Foundation is a private family foundation serv-ing Martin County, Min-nesota. Its mission is to carry on the legacy of

long-time Martin Coun-ty resident, Juanita Ellen (Teubner) Schmeeckle, to provide grants for the betterment of Martin County.

“The Schmeeckle Foundation Grants are designed to support projects which are in-novative, involve col-laboration, and achieve sustainable, measurable results.” say the Sch-meeckle Foundation Trustees. Grants are re-viewed by the four trust-ees with assistance from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation.

Grants are awarded based on their likelihood to create measurable change within the Foun-dation’s three core fo-cus areas. This round of grantees includes:

•$32,200 to Grana-da Huntley East Chain School for Revitalizing the GHEC Music Educa-tion Program and Early Childhood Technology.

•$2,500 to Highland Echoes Community Show and Arts Learning Experience at the Fair-mont Opera House.

•$40,000 to Project 1590, Inc. for Lead for Fairmont.

•$5,000 to Project 1590, Inc. – Kids Just Want to Have Fun for Miniature Golf Expan-sion.

Shirley Malherek, 75

A beloved wife and mother, Shirley Sheely Malherek, originated in

East Chain, MN. She and her husband Tim relo-cated to Riverton, MN in 1979.

An active outdoor en-thusiast, she and Tim regularly camped, hunted, fished and always appre-ciated the beauty of the Cuyuna Range and the re-siliency of its inhabitants. Being adventurist by na-ture she and her husband of 56 years traveled across the nation and world ex-ploring various environ-ments and cultures. Be-

tween SCUBA diving the Grand Cayman Islands to walking the Roman Coli-seum, each day was inter-preted as an opportunity for another adventure.

Shirley will be remem-bered as an avid bird watcher, wild life enthusi-ast and essential member of Riverton’s community, regularly providing ad-ministrative support to the city council.

Shirley lost her 6-month battle with cancer on Au-gust 3, 2020, while resting peacefully, close to fam-ily and friends and under conditions she set.

Along with her parents,

Floyd and Viola Sheely, Shirley was preceded in death by sisters Barbara (Doerr) and Helen (Roll-ing). Left to cherish her memory are husband Tim of Riverton, MN; son Jeff and wife Marti of Spokane, WA; sister Marlene (How-ard) Anderson of Truman; brothers Dick and Ed, both of Mankato and Paul (Diane) of Fairmont plus many nieces and neph-ews.

In honoring Shirley’s wishes, no funeral service or viewing will be offered. The Malherek family asks to be allowed to mourn in private.

when they retired in 2000. They built their dream home on Lost Lake, en-joying fishing, gardening, baking and spending time with family.

Diane is survived by her loving husband and best friend Tim; children Thomas (Jody) West, Sheri (Brian) Krenz and Kylene (Mark) Kreykes; grandchildren Nicholas (Tierney), Ellah, Brielle,

Gunner and Garrett, and her first great grandchild, Evelyn Rae.

Diane was predeceased by her parents, sister and her mother and father-in-law.

Memorials can be sent to 2217 W. Dream Drive, North Mankato, MN 56003.

Memorial Service for Leonard “Lenny” Jorgen-son, age 94, of Sherburn, MN, formerly of Roches-ter, MN, will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 10, 2020 at the Lakeview Fu-neral Home in Fairmont. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in Pleasant Prairie Town-ship with full military hon-ors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 and Martin County Veter-ans of Foreign Wars Post #1222.

Lenny passed away Tuesday afternoon, August 18, 2020 at Temperance Lake Ridge in Sherburn. The Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is as-sisting the family with ar-rangements.

Leonard Eugene Jor-genson was born Febru-ary 13, 1926 in Comstock, Wisconsin, the youngest son of Theodore Jorgen-son and Grace (Scribner) Jorgenson. Lenny attend-ed Cumberland Public Schools until 1940. Even-tually, his family moved to Fairmont.

Lenny served in the Navy during WWII on the destroyer, USS Ingersoll, in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged on February 12, 1947. When he returned home, he was united in marriage to

Marion Armstrong. This union was blessed with five children: Rene Jor-genson, Jerry Jorgenson, Nancy (Chet) Starkey, Jean (Duane) Murray, and Don-ald (Denise) Jorgenson.

Lenny worked for Mal-lon Egg in Fairmont, Farm-er’s Creamery, a truck driver, and for the Fair-mont Fire Department. He was active in the American Legion and the VFW.

On May 28, 1965, Lenny was united in marriage to Joyce (Riegel) Swanson. Lenny and Joyce made their home in the Roch-ester area. They enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and traveling with their camping group. Lenny loved deer hunting ev-ery year and he loved to fish--he didn’t like to eat fish, but he really liked to catch them. They enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Lenny worked for Kahler Hospitality and Rochester City Delivery until his retirement. Lenny and Joyce spent 45 years together before Joyce passed away in March of 2011.

In 2016, Lenny moved into Temperance Lake Ridge in Sherburn.

Those left to cherish his memory include: daugh-ter, Nancy Starkey of Cres-cent City, CA; son-in-law, Duane Murray of Chicago, IL; son and daughter-in-law, Don and Denise Jorgenson of Granada, MN; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-great-grand-children; special cousins, Vina (Karl) Marquart and Petra Marquart of Min-netonka, MN; sister-in-law, Joan Riegel of Chi-cago, IL; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Lenny was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; daughters: Rene Jorgen-son and Jean Murray; son, Jerry Jorgenson; son-in-law, Chet Starkey; grand-son, Todd Murray; siblings, Hildred Nelson, Homer, Bernard, and Jack Jorgen-son and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

When it comes to han-dling any type of fuel, knowledge and caution are essential, warn ex-perts. “Knowledge is a powerful accident pre-vention tool,” says Dan Marshall, vice president of marketing and busi-ness development with Scepter, a longtime lead-er in the fuel container industry. With that in mind, Marshall shares the following tips:

Fuel Storage1. Seek out containers

with a user-controlled flow valve, child safety features and a flame mit-igation device (FMD) for safety. Never remove or alter the FMD.

2. Only purchase fuel containers approved by federal or state authori-ties. For example, the Scepter SmartControl fuel containers for gaso-line, kerosene and diesel, are designed to substan-tially exceed standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials and the Con-sumer Product Safety Commission standards.

3. Store fuel contain-ers in a secure, dry loca-tion away from furnaces, hot water tanks and any other potential source of heat

14. Should a flam-mable liquid spill, im-mediately contact your fire department or local authorities for cleaning instructions and restrict access to the area from children and pets.

Outdoor Activities15. Gasoline is not a

lighter fluid. Never try to start or accelerate a

bonfire, barbeque or grill with gasoline.

16. Never allow chil-dren near fuel containers or running equipment.

17. Don’t guess. Check which fuel type is recom-mended for your outdoor lawn and sports equip-ment. Follow all manu-facturer safety recom-mendations.

18. Never use gasoline as a cleaning agent, or to wash hands.

Notice is hereby given per Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 215, and county’s feedlot ordinance, Chap-ter 5, that LBH Partners (Lonny & Lynn J Becker) has made an application to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency / County of Martin for a permit to build a new feedlot.

The new feedlot will be located in the SW ¼ of the SE ¼ of Section 17 in Center Creek Township, Mar-tin County, Minnesota. The new barn will be 123’ by 164’ and will hold 2,480 pigs from approximately 12 pounds until 270 pounds for a total of 744 an-imal units. The proposed new barn will be a total confinement barn with a 123’ x 164’ x 8’ below barn concrete manure storage pit under the barn for 13 months worth of storage. The total number of ani-mal units on this site after building the new barn will be 744.

This publication shall constitute as notice to each resident and each owner of real property within 5000 feet of the perimeter of the proposed feedlot, as required by Minnesota State Law.

PUBLIC NOTICE

I always seem to have a project, or two, or three,

going on someplace. Last week I undertook a new task: re-siding my Aunt Di’s garage. I went over Friday to remove all the old siding and loaded it into my dump truck. Saturday, I went to Duluth to pick up new windows and all the materials to complete the project.

Sunday after church, I started loading my tools into the van. I was pulling a trailer to carry my ladders. As I started stacking my ladders on the flat bed, I said, “Man, I sure have a lot of lad-ders.” While I was tying the ladders down, I won-dered if I may have too many ladders?

I need the four-foot ladder for shorter ar-eas, just out of my reach while standing on the ground. Melissa is help-ing me with the proj-ect, so I needed another four-foot ladder for her. The two six-foot ladders are for areas just beyond the reach for the four-footers. The ten-foot step ladder is necessary for reaching higher areas.

There are a lot of plac-es where I need to work, that call for even taller ladders. So, I brought

along my twenty-foot, and thirty-two-foot ex-tension ladders. The ladders can’t be leaning on the building because they would be right in front of the place I’m trying to work. The ex-tension ladders always seem to be too close, or too far from the build-ing; plus, I have to have an open span between ladders, since I am work-ing with twelve-foot long sections of siding. For that, I have ladder jacks.

A ladder jack is a tri-angular piece with two brackets that will latch onto the back side of a ladder’s rungs. By sepa-rating the sections of my thirty-two-foot exten-sion, I end up with two sixteen-foot ladders. I lean them against the building, hang the lad-der jacks on the back of each and lay a plank across the jacks. Now I have a nice platform with no obstructions be-tween me and the face of building, upon which to work. Of course, to reach even higher areas, I have two, thirty-two-foot ex-tension ladders and a forty-foot as well.

The ladder jack tri-angles are adjustable, so depending on the angle of the ladder against the building, I can change

the triangles to assure a level working surface. That’s important when you’re working in the air. Still, all these angles and numbers can make your head swim.

I thought back to my days at Ottumwa High School. I sat in geom-etry class, gazing out the window at my motor-cycle in the parking lot across the street. It was a beautiful, sunny, spring day. The classroom win-dows were open and the breeze was blowing in. It felt good. I was thinking of all the things I could be doing outdoors; the places I could ride my bike – if I wasn’t trapped in this senseless math class.

Mr. Patrick called my name, snapping me out of my daydream, to ask me a question. I had no idea what he was talking about because I wasn’t paying attention. Thus, I answered him, “Why do we have to learn this stuff? I’m never going to use this in the real world.”

“When you get to that stage of life, Mr. Palen, you’ll figure out why you need to know this.” He explained, as he kept drawing lines and num-bers on the chalkboard. He quickly caught me up to speed, then we worked out the problem together.

In my driveway, I tightened the last rachet strap across the load. I counted the ladders on the trailer. “Eight ladders, plus one I’m not taking and two that are still in Ottumwa. Do I seriously own eleven ladders? Do I need that many ladders? Does anyone need that many?” I guess I do use them all.

I thought about my ladders and Mr. Patrick’s geometry class and how today, I actually DO use the things he was teach-ing me. I recited my high school class call: “The ladder of success we’ll climb, we’re the class of seventy-nine.” I started laughing, “I guess I made it.”

Like so many busi-nesses, dental of-

fices have been greatly affected by the corona-virus pandemic. After seven weeks, they have now reopened for ap-pointments but have also been required to implement many new protective measures in order to do so. Although cleanliness and steril-ization have always been a priority, the Ameri-can Dental Association, Minnesota Dental As-sociation and Centers for Disease Control have recommended many additional protection measures. These mea-sures are meant to pro-tect the patients as well as the staff. Masks and gloves have been worn for years but when you arrive for your next visit you will notice many new protective mea-sures. At Gethmann Family Dentistry, this will start when you call to make your appoint-ment. You will receive a verbal coronavirus screening and will also be asked to wear a mask on arrival and depar-ture. On arrival, your temperature will be tak-en and another corona-virus screening will be administered. Chairs in the waiting room will be spaced six feet apart and things of common touch such as magazines and

children’s toys will be absent. Many dental of-fices are also trying to stagger appointments to help keep the number of people in the waiting room to minimum. In addition, patients will be asked to rinse with a hydrogen peroxide solu-tion before each treat-ment. The dental staff are also taking many additional precautions. First, staff tempera-tures and corona-virus screenings are admin-istered daily. Masks are worn at all times in the office and while work-ing with a patient, staff must wear an N95 mask and face shields along with disposable gowns that are changed after each patient. At Geth-mann Family Dentistry, hydro air purifiers are placed in each opera-tory room and anything touched in the operatory are also covered with a disposable plastic cov-ering. Finally, the entire office is routinely steril-ized throughout the day. While some of these new requirements are for the patient, most pertain to the Dental Staff. The staff at Gethmann Den-tal have found people to be very understanding and accepting of these changes and believe these new measures will keep everyone safe.
