The Academies offer a flexible curriculum for government funded students, including hands-on creative workshops and demonstrations in our modern, air-conditioned environment.

Whether your apprentice is new to the hairdressing world or a qualified hairdresser or barber working towards NVQ Level 3, Alan d Hairdressing Education offers all levels of tuition. We have a strong reputation for work-based-learning and have been delivering Government-funded apprenticeship training for over 20 years.

Pastoral care is very important to Alan d. Every week your Level 2 apprentice attends the Academy their progress will be reviewed by one of our team, who is not part of the teaching staff. They will be happy to help them with any problems that may affect their learning.

Alan d has a well-rehearsed Safeguarding policy and is an Equal Opportunities organisation.

Above all we pride ourselves on our ability to tailor courses for the individual needs of each student.

“We have worked with Alan d for more than 6 years now and we are very proud of the talent we’ve nurtured.

It was important to us to choose a training school who shared the common goal of wanting to educate those who want to push themselves and show a real dedication to and passion for our craft.”

Beginners CoursesNVQ Level 2

Whether your apprentice is training to be a ladies hairdresser or barber, the system is the same. They will spend one full week at the academy for each month of their course. Their place on the course is guaranteed until they qualify.

The classes have been carefully structured to help your apprentice achieve NVQ level 2 in Ladies Hairdressing or Barbering, with Functional Skills.

Whether choosing Ladies Hairdressing or Barbering, your apprentice will be cutting hair on their second day. The first week of the Induction class is run jointly to ensure the Barber trainees receive the same basic cutting skills as the Ladies Hairdressers before they move onto specific barbering techniques. Flexible training days are available at both our London and Ipswich Academies by prior arrangement.

Barbering

During the 3 week induction class, your apprentice will learn the 9 Alan d foundation haircuts together with a variety of finishing techniques before moving on to a further 3 weeks of cutting, both on dummy heads as well as live models. Client care, shampooing and salon etiquette all form part of this module.

The classes then run as follows: 4 weeks of setting and long-hair, 4 weeks of colouring, 4 weeks of perming together with the completion of any outstanding elements of the course.

During their time at the Academy, your apprentice will work on live models, dummy heads and sit on-line tests towards the completion of their NVQ.

In many cases, your apprentice may well complete their course in less than the prescribed 18 months. At each stage they will be assessed to confirm their progress and it is our policy to fast-track those that perform particularly well and whom we consider to be ‘work-ready’.

During the 1st week of of Induction, the barbering apprentice will learn the 5 longer Alan d foundation haircuts on dummy heads. Over the remainder of the course, the student will be cutting men’s hair both on live models and dummy heads using the scissor-over-comb method, clippers, trimmers, beard and moustache trimming, assisting with shaving services and some Reception work. They will also learn client care, shampooing and barber shop etiquette.

There is a new intake of apprentices each month throughout the year with a maximum of 10 apprentices in each group.

On starting, the student must bring their National Insurance number and a salon card together with their passport or birth certificate. The apprentice attends the Academy for one whole week every month. Flexible training days are available at both our London and Ipswich Academies by prior arrangement. The time-frame for a Ladies Hairdressing course is normally 18-24 months. For Barber training, 12-15 months is usually sufficient.

A progression report is sent to the employer listing the trainee’s performance during their week of training including time-keeping etc. together with an In-Salon Training Report to be completed and signed by the employer or the training manager and the apprentice, logging the trainee’s progress between visits to the Academy. The VTCT registration fee is payable on commencement.

Alan d Hairdressing Education is able to take apprentices on transfer from other providers, subject only to the amount of time they have left to complete their course.
