1987 OUTLOOKLast season's Lady Griz volleyball team laid the foundation

for what could be the strongest team ever in coach Dick Scott's 10-year tenure at the University of Montana.

UM finished the season playing some of its best volleyball of the year, losing a close, four-game match against Idaho State in the Mountain West Conference championships in Pocatello.

The bottom line was a 21-11 overall record and an 9-5 conference finish, good for second place. The Lady Griz were ranked 33rd nationally—the top 32 teams going to the NCAAs.

This season Montana returns two starters and six letterwinners.

The two returning starters are All-American candidate Cindy Pitzinger, a middle blocker, and outside hitter Allison Yarnell. Both are seniors.

Sophomore technique hitter Mari Brown will probably move to the starting role at setter after starting the last half of the season in '86. Veterans Mary McManigal and Cheryl Hanson will also be in the battle for starting berths.

Two other returnees include sophomores Julie Hoffman (MB) and Anne Tarleton (MB).

Scott, who has a nine-year record of 184-167, said one of three recruited freshmen will vie for the starting job at right side hitter.

UM's recruits include Cyndee Jones of Gresham (OR) High, Rhonda Mailey, Twin Bridges High (MT), Erin Parks, a local player from Hellgate High, Jennifer Pinkerton of Canyon (CA) High and Nichole Pruim (Primm) of Castle Rock, Colorado's Douglas County High.

Pitzinger led UM in kills with 425, hitting percentage (.287), serving aces (48) and block solos (85). She was selected to try out for the United States National Team which competed in the World University Games last July.

Yarnell has been an All-Mountain West pick the last two years, and like fellow senior Pitzinger, will be starting for the fourth season in-a-row. Yarnell enters the 1987 season as UM's all-time hitting percentage leader at .250, narrowly leading Pitzinger (.249).

Ironically, Yarnell edged out Pitzinger for MVP honors last season, although Cindy was tabbed as the Outstanding Blocker and Outstanding Backcourt Player.

Hoffman was picked as the Most Improved, while Brown was selected as the Outstanding Rookie.

Cindy is definitely All-American caliber and ranks up there with the top 30 to 50 players in the country," lauded Scott. There s no doubt about it. Obviously she needs to have a great

year to receive that kind of recognition."Allison is also an honors candidate and in league people

will try to shut her and Cindy down to improve their chances to beat us, Scott continued. "I think Mari Brown is also a possible honors candidate, but is at a new position."

"For us to have success it will be up to the ability of the new players to adjust and for us to get together and play as a team," Scott said. "Three of our five recruits played a lot of club competition over the summer which will give them decent experience coming into our program."

Scolt tabbed defending champion Idaho State as the team to beat, saying, "they return everyone but one starter and got a real good junior coUege recruit. They'll be the team to beat and have a shot at breaking into the top 20."

The University of Montana boasts a proud tradition of academic excellence in teaching, research and service. Located in Missoula on 201 acres

at the base of Mount Sentinel, UM was chartered February 17, 1893. Since then, it has grown from 50 students and seven faculty members to a present enrollment of 8,500 and about 450 full-time state supported faculty positions.

Bachelor's degrees are available in 58 fields, and associate of arts degrees may be obtained in two areas. UM offers master's degrees in 54 programs and doctoral degrees in 13.

The College of Arts and Sciences is the core of the University. It includes a full range of programs and courses in the life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Seven professional schools complete the academic program—Business Administration, Fine Arts, Journalism, Education, Forestry, Law and Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences.

Missoula is in the midst of an area noted for its spectacular scenery and recreational opportunities. It is within easy driving distance of four wilderness areas and Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. The natural surroundings offer excellent opportunities for hunting, fishing, backpacking, river floating, camping and other recreational pursuits. Two winter ski areas are within minutes of the University, and several others are only a couple of hours away by car. UM owns and operates a golf course near the campus.

Downtown Missoula is within blocks of the University and is easily accessible to UM students. Other parts of the city can be reached by using Mountain Line, the city's mass transit system.
