President’s Column Greetings. Hope you all have fared well and stayed warm dur-ing the winter month of January. LGS has already got-ten into February at full steam starting Tuesday Feb. 4th with our annual professional/student eat-and-greet, held this year at Deano’s Pizza on Bertrand Dr. This has always been a good opportunity for the future oil and gas finders to meet some of the current ones in a

more informal setting than the LGS monthly lunch meetings. Our February lunch meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 19, at our

usual location at the Petroleum Club. Our speaker this month is Arthur Ber-man from Labyrinth Consulting Services, Inc. in Houston, Texas. Mr. Ber-man is a geologist with 35 years experience in the oil industry and his talk is entitled, “Reflections on a Decade of Shale Plays in the U.S.” Mr. Berman spoke to LGS in the last few years. That talk was well attended and generated excellent reviews from those that attended. Mr. Berman has more data regard-ing his subject than previously and he’ll be presenting the observations based on those data to us.

Field Trip update—We have a field trip planned for the 2nd or 3rd weekend in May to northern New Mexico that will be led by Barry Wawak, past LGS President (2004–05). The trip is designed to give 10–12 participants an overview of the geology of the Rio Grande Rift. In Barry’s words, “The ‘theme’ of the trip is sedimentation associated with rift tectonics, but we look at much more than this through the duration of the trip. The first day (we) will look at basement rocks in the Sierra Nacimiento and at volcanic rocks associated with the Jemez Mountains. The second day we will look at the structural boundary between the Colorado Plateau and Rio Grande Rift, Trias-sic sediments on the Colorado Plateau, sediments and volcanic rocks associat-ed with the Rio Grande rift, and basement rocks in the Tusas Mountains. The last day we will spend along the Rio Grande—looking at rift-associated vol-canism, collect fossils from a mixed-marine Pennsylvanian paleoenvironment and an additional look at early volcanism associated with the Jemez Moun-tains.”

Barry tells us that the trip cost will be $650 ± for transportation in New Mexico, meals, and lodging. Transport to and from Albuquerque is the partic-ipant’s responsibility. LGS needs to provide Barry a headcount of partici-pants by mid-late February. Final trip payment will be due in mid-April 2014.

Please let Tim Duex know if you plan to participate. His email is [email protected].

Nominations—As the LGS 2013–14 year draws to a close on May 31, 2014, we need to nominate and elect officers to serve the Society for the 2014–2015 year.

FEBRUARY LUNCHEON PRESENTATION

“Reflections on a

Decade of U.S. Shale Plays”

Arthur E. Berman Labyrinth Consulting Services, Inc.

Abstract The Barnett, Fayetteville and Haynesville shale gas plays are not profitable a $4/MMBtu Henry Hub gas prices. There are lim-ited areas of the Marcellus Shale that are commercial at $4/MMBtu gas prices. The portions of shale gas plays that are po-tentially commercial at $6 gas prices represent less than 20% of the total drilled play areas accounting for price uplift from natu-

ral gas liquids. Commercial core areas of the Bakken and Eagle Ford shale oil plays similarly consist of less than 20% of the to-tal drilled play areas; these are profitable at $95/barrel of oil equivalent West Texas Intermediate oil prices. Shale plays have finite limits to commercial production that can be mapped as relatively discreet fields. Structural geology and correlative natural fracturing is an important factor in most plays. The life cycle of most shale plays is measured in years and not in decades. While recent natural gas price spikes are clearly related to weather anomalies, they expose supply limits not generally rec-ognized by industry analysts. Gas production has been essential-ly flat since February 2012 and production growth is now ap-proaching zero. Gas production from conventional reservoirs accounts for approximately 57% of total gas supply and is declin-ing at about 19% annually with few new wells being drilled. Barnett and Haynesville production is declining and Fayetteville and Eagle Ford production is flat. All gas growth is from the Marcellus Shale. Although the United States has abundant gas resources, supply constraints will become more frequent until prices increase and more gas-directed drilling ensues.

In Memorium Daniel J. Tearpock

August 31, 1948 (Nanticoke, PA) – February 9, 2014 (Houston, TX)

On Sunday, February 9, 2014, Daniel J. Tear-pock passed away peacefully in his Houston home surrounded by family, following a three year battle with pancreatic cancer. He leaves behind a sub-stantial personal and professional legacy, and will be missed by his family, many friends and profes-sional colleagues, and students of geology around the world. Daniel John Tearpock was born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, on August 31, 1948, to parents John and Laura-Nita Tearpock. Raised in Pennsylvania

coal-mining country, Dan’s childhood was spent exploring the woods and mines close to his house, collecting fossils, quartz, and other miner-als and dreaming of exploring other planets. As a boy, his career path was already clear: he wanted to become a geologist. Dan married Paula Shultz in 1969, and the couple had two daughters: Nicole and Danielle. While the couple divorced they remained close and continued as business associates until 2012. After graduating from Bloomsburg University in 1970 with a B.A. in Earth Sciences, Dan started a computer consulting company, a business whose sale two years later provided part of the funds needed to return to school for his Master’s Degree in Geology from Temple University (1977). By 1985, Dan was a Senior Geologic Engineer with Tenneco Oil Company in Lafayette, Louisiana, where he was also responsible for redeveloping the corporate geosciences training program specific to subsurface interpretation and mapping. His significant subsurface map-ping expertise was the foundation for the three textbooks and related training courses he was to co-author in the years to come: Applied Sub-surface Geological Mapping, Quick Look Techniques for Prospect Evaluation, and Applied Subsurface Geological Mapping with Structur-al Methods – 2nd Edition. When Tenneco was sold in 1988, Dan struck out on his own, form-ing Subsurface Consultants & Associates, LLC. The business grew quickly from a four-person shop of ex-Tenneco employees to an inter-national consulting and training firm with multiple branch offices. At the same time, Dan’s Applied Subsurface Geological Mapping book grew in recognition, becoming a Prentice Hall Technical bestseller in 18 months.

UL-Lafayette AAPG Student Chapter

The members of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s AAPG Stu-dent Chapter strive to emulate what the AAPG represents. There is a strong belief in taking one’s training into their own hands among the stu-

dents at this university, and we actively seek out additional knowledge in order to enhance our skills. With the reinstatement of the AAPG student chapter program at this university in 2012, our students are now readily able to seek out intriguing and in-sightful guests, and search for relevant areas to visit for hands-on experiences. A primary goal for our chapter during the 2014 spring semes-ter is to conduct a field trip to visit the Fayetteville Shale outcrop-pings, of the Arkoma Basin, located in northern Arkansas. The outcrops are well exposed along Highway 65 near Marshall, AR, and Highway 66 near Oxley, AR. The trip will be open to both students and local industry professionals. The trip will take place in mid-April, lasting 3 or 4 days, based on availability. During the trip, we hope to stay at the Buffalo National River, near Mar-shall, AR. This site will not only provide an entertaining and in-teresting place for us to stay, it is also close to the outcrops. The chapter also hopes to provide field guides for each participant. The chance to visit outcrops of a currently producing resource play, such as the Fayetteville Shale, will provide supplemental education for our members beyond the classroom. The ability for our chapter to provide such opportunities is a pivotal aspect of what this organization expects to accomplish. However, the chal-lenges of planning and funding such a trip for a new chapter are clear. Any financial investment that our chapter can receive from the local Lafayette petroleum industry would be greatly appreci-ated, and is vital if this trip is to take place. Our chapter firmly believes that these types of trips provide invaluable experiences for our members. —Christopher Murley, UL Lafayette AAPG Student Chapter

President For more information regarding how to make a contribution, please contact our chapter at: [email protected]. Also, visit us at our new website: http://ul-aapg.weebly.com.

EXPLORATION, L.L.C.

(continued from page 2) Per the LGS Constitution: “This committee shall submit a slate

of at least two candidates for each position, except for the position of President which will be filled by the President-Elect, to the Socie-ty at the next to last meeting prior to the end of the fiscal year.”

Accordingly, we need to have a slate of candidates for President-Elect, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and 1 Advisor that can be presented to the membership by the April 16th lunch meeting.

At that meeting the members are allowed to nominate candidates from the floor, “The Active Members present at that meeting shall have the opportunity to supplement the choices of the Nominating Committee by making nominations from the floor.” Subsequent to the April meeting, LGS “…shall prepare a suitable ballot to be mailed at least one month prior to the end of the fiscal year to all Active Members, Senior Members, and Honorary Life Members. An attached explanatory notice shall state that any marked ballots not accompanied by the remittance of annual dues shall be disqual-ified. Only those returned to the Society within 15 days will be counted.” On this timetable we will be able to announce the election results by the May 21 lunch meeting.

Consider helping out your Society by serving as an officer for at least 1 term. We have a lot of original thinking people in this group and we’d like to put some of those ideas into action.

See you at this month’s events! jy

(continued from page 8) Over the years, Dan was a frequent public speaker and committee mem-ber, a prolific author of professional papers, and an officer for organiza-tions such as the AAPG Division of Professional Affairs and JCORET (a collaboration of multiple technical organizations, which he helped found to provide industry input to the SEC reserve reporting process). As the CEO of Subsurface Consultants & Associates, LLC (SCA), Dan built SCA into an internationally recognized upstream training and con-sulting firm. Dan was the 62nd member to be inducted into the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, U.S. Section, and was the 40th person to receive the Kapitsa Medal. His success as a businessman also received notice: in 1986 and 1998, he was an Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist, a dis-tinction sponsored by USA Today, NASDAQ, Ernest & Young, LLP, and the Kauffman Foundation. The course of Dan’s career took him around the world, for both work and pleasure. His wide-ranging professional travels included sig-nificant time in the Middle East, Europe, Venezuela, Thailand, Canada, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Korea, and he found enjoyment vacationing in Spain, England, the Mayan Riviera, and the North American Rockies, among many other destinations. In 2011, Dan married Diana Poon and welcomed Cindy Au as his stepdaughter. In 2012, after 24 years as Chairman and CEO, Dan chose to take on a new role in the company he built—that of Chairman Emeritus. That decision coincided with a year of significant recognition in the industry, including receipt of the DPA Heritage Award, nomination to the Bloomsburg University College of Science and Technology Advisory Board, and the AAPG Honorary Member Award. In addition to his success as a geologist, Dan had many outside inter-ests. To help pay for college, he opened a taekwondo studio and was a kickboxer. In the 1990s, he was a body builder and participated in sev-eral competitions. He played multiple instruments, composed music, was an artist, and self-published a science fiction novel. The Tearpock Family band traveled and played all over the state of Pennsylvania. Dan was active in public life, and gave generous donations of time and resources to social and political causes about which he was passion-ate. He sponsored numerous children through the Christian Children's Fund. He also funded the Daniel J. Tearpock Scholarship at Blooms-burg University for a junior or senior in good academic standing pursu-ing a degree in the earth sciences or geoscience. His final years were enriched by ever growing commitments to service and his Catholic faith. Together, he and his wife Diana donated funds to help build a Catholic retreat in Humble, Texas, and volunteered at MD Anderson to help other patients with pancreatic cancer. Dan was a regular visitor to the House of Tears (Southwest Houston) and started a prayer group where he would pray over people in need.
