A cooperative effort between the Texas Parks and

Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Louisiana

Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) tostandardize shing regulations on waters shared by

the two states is nearing fruition.

Waters affected by the proposed agreement include

Toledo Bend Reservoir, Caddo Lake and the Sabine

River from Toledo Bend dam downstream to the

Interstate 10 bridge. The proposal would also redene

the Toledo Bend Reservoir boundary from the U.S.

Highway 84 bridge upstream to where the river and

the state line diverge.

“This agreement was achieved through diligent

effort and amiable cooperation between members of

our respective departments,”said Ross Melinchuk,

TPWD’s deputy executive director for natural

resources.“I believe this compromise will provide

meaningful benets to recreational anglers, enforce-

ment staff and sheries resources in both states as

well as establish a solid foundation upon which to

build future cooperative efforts.”

Differing regulations in the two states have long

posed problems for anglers. The line between the

two states follows the old Sabine River channeldown through the middle of Toledo Bend and passes

through Caddo Lake as well. An angler with a legal

Louisiana catch who drifted across the line into Texas

could be cited for violation of Texas regulations.

Texas and Louisiana inland sheries staff began

talks in mid-2010 to develop a suite of standardized

regulations acceptable to anglers in both states. In

general the current Louisiana length and bag limits

are more liberal than the Texas regulations. The

compromise regulation proposals generally call for

length limits closer to the current Texas regulations while allowing bag limits nearer the current Louisi-

ana regulations.

The proposed compromise regulations for Toledo

Bend affect channel, blue and athead catsh and

black and white crappie. Proposed regulations for

Caddo Lake and the Sabine River deal with those spe-

cies plus white, yellow, largemouth and spotted bass.

Regulations governing the harvest of black basses,

striped bass and white bass on Toledo Bend were

standardized previously.

“The original goal of regulation standardization

was specic to Toledo Bend Reservoir, but we all

recognized an opportunity to broaden our scope and

incorporate Caddo Lake and portions of the Sabine

River,” said Gary Saul, director of TPWD’s Inland

Fisheries Division.“During this process we utilized a

mixture of available science and old-fashioned com-

promise to seek common ground.Agency personnel

from both states brought a cooperative spirit to the

negotiating table. The anglers we serve deserve noth-

ing less than a complete resolution to this issue.”Public response to regulation proposals and nal

recommendations by TPWD Inland Fisheries staff

was presented to the TPWD Commission for approval

on March 31,2011.The LDWF is operating on a

parallel track for gathering public comment and

presenting their ndings to their Commission. Target

date for implementation of the new regulations in

both states is September 1,2011.

The 17th Annual LOBI Fishing Tournament

By Jim Binns

In 1994, Louisiana oilmen founded the Louisiana Oilmen’s Bass Invitational (LOBI)

shing tournament and each year it has just gotten bigger and better. This is a time when

active and retired members of t he industry come together for f un, fellowship and to nancially help support the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Over the past sixteen years, thisevent has brought in over $1,075,000.00 for the Hospital, and the money gives hope to many

children throughout the world who are facing catastrophic disease. St Jude Hospital was found-ed by late enter tainer Danny Thomas in 1962, and has treated more than 18,000 children fromacross the United States and 60 foreign countries.

When you come to this tournament you better bring you’re A-game because these boys know

how to sh. In 2009 Naquin and McFarlain won the event with 45.02 pounds (big bass was10.18) and in 2010 the tournament was won by Pecoraro and Carmouche with 38.71 pounds(big bass was 9.92 pounds). That is some heavyweight action for any bass tournament. And

with reports that the shing was “red-hot” on Toledo Bend, many were saying that past recordscould be broken.

Toledo Bend, with its 1,200 miles of shoreline (185,000 surface areas) offers anglers many

different opportunities for catching bass. Hanging around the local tackle shops before thetournament began you could hear talk about Carolina-rig’s, swimbaits, Senko’s, Rat-L-Traps,

wacky worms, spinnerbaits and jigs all being a good shing technique to use. But ultimately it

would be up to the LOBI anglers t o nd “THE” technique that would place them in the winnerscircle.

Excitement was in the air Thursday, March 31st , as the contestants registered and thenfeasted on cheeseburgers and sausage Po’boys provided by L&L Oil & Gas Services. Each contes-tant also received a great ditty bag that contained a new Daiwa reel that could be spooled freeof charge with Berkley shing line. What a deal!

Friday morning’s weather was absolutely beautiful as the 650 teams took to the water tocatch a bag of big bass. Toledo Bend is 7 ½-feet low and, and under these low-water conditionsit was good that all contestants were allowed to trailer to their favorite shing locations.

The weigh-in lines at 3pm were busy as the teams came in from all part s of Toledo BendLake to weigh their sh. As usual on the rst day of a bass tournament, most of the leaders

were “tight-lipped” as to the shing pattern they were using to catch their bass. At the end of the day the leaders of the Team Division were as follows:

Big Bass for Day One was a beautiful 9.52 pound lunker that earned a cool $1000 for anglers Jeremy Waltrip and partner Dan Landry. Waltrips big bass was taken from the back of HousenBayou on a topwater lure at about 1:45 in the afternoon. Up until noon the team only had two

bass in the livewell. Second place big bass was a 9.22 pounder worth $800 caught by Donnie Williams and partner Brian Loganoook.

The day ended with a great fried catsh meal sponsored by Select Energy Services, a rafedrawing where a beautiful Skeeter shing rig donated by Cajun Outboards was given to Stacy Turner of Conroe, Texas, and then ended with a gorgeous sunset over beautiful Toledo Bend

Lake.Starting time for day two was 6:30am and I am sure that every sherman had a specic

plan to take home the big bucks. In many areas fog moved in and lasted until mid-morning,

but after that another beautiful day greeted the anglers. In fact it was super beautiful. As in all bass tournaments there are many stories about things that went wrong, big bass

that were lost, boats that had problems and things that should have been done differently. However, all the anglers I visited with had nothing but praise to say about the bass shing on

Toledo Bend Lake, the great weather and the fact that they were proud to help such a worthy cause as the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Prior to the awards ceremony, all of the participants were treated t o a ne meal of Pork

Jambalaya sponsored by Blue Marlin Services. It was great and many anglers went back forseconds!

Music ltered out over the Cypress Bend Park pavilion area as hundreds of folks gathered

together to see the nal presentations. I don’t know how many rod and reels were given away to lucky anglers in the drawings – but there were many. There were many highlights duringthis year’s event and a few I would like to mention are -

• Toledo Bend Lake Association receiving a $1500 donation to continue their great effort

in providing bass ngerlings (20,000 last year) that are released into the lake, and for

providing the lights on the bridges and navigation buoys t hat are so helpful to shermenmotoring on the lake.• Gary Rispone and his cameraman Gary Crouch lming both days for the Paradise Louisi-

ana television program. It should be a great show.

• The Louisiana Law Enforcement group that for two days assisted in getting all of these

folks in and out of the pavilion area and safely on their way home.

• Team # 272 (Todd Childress and Chance Moton) for weighing in the smallest black bass

(1.38 pounds) and receiving a plaque and lot’s of cheers from the crowd, but they also

wound up receiving a free entry for next years event. Not a bad deal.

• And a whopping check for $75,000 to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for contin-ued help in their wonderful work. Ms. Sarah Burnette accepted the check for the St. Judeorganization.

We nally reached the climax of the event by presenting cash and awards to all of the hard

working winning anglers. Big Bass winner of day two and winner of the Big Bass of the Tour-nament and $1000 was Lane Kidder with a lunker that weighed 10.52 pounds. What a bass!

So what was the pattern t hat made the team of Patin and Picard the winners? Well rst of

all let me say that the team also won t he Texas Oilman’s Bass Invitational (TOBI) held March18-19 on Toledo Bend Lake, so they are denitely no strangers to the winners circle. They have

shed together about eight years and know their way around the lake for sure. The team shed

“way north” and did quite a bit of marking spawning bed areas in their pre-shing. On the

rst day they were able to use a Senko in 2- to 3-feet of water to land most of their bass. Onday two they noticed a denite drop in the lake level and relied on a mixture of baits to catch

their sh, but their No. 1 “go to bait” was still the Senko. Grass was not a factor in their shing

location. Congratulations to Patin and Picard for a great tournament! But the event was not over yet. All of the anglers held their breath as the drawing took place

for a fully rigged Skeeter bass boat donated by Cajun Outboards. The lucky name that cameout of the hopper was Mike Alexander of Hemphill, Texas. Mike and his wife were over whelmedand I am sure that it took a day or two for them to fully realize that the beautiful bass boat

was really theirs. What a great tournament. Even if an angler didn’t weigh in a sh at this event t hey were

still winners because of the support t hey provided to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. At the end of the evening I am sure that a good feeling was experienced by all because helpingthese children is truly what this event is all about.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

SPAWNING AND FACTORS

FOR SUCCESSBy Dan Ashe, Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife

Well, it’s that time of year when things start to happen. Specically, to all of us sh heads we associate

spring with spawning and wonder what this year will eventually bring three to ve years from now from

the result of all those largemouth bass being born. We all reap today what we have sown yesterday,so it

goes with sh as well.

First let’s start with the basics. Nearly everyone has seen largemouth bass in an area that has been

swept clean near the shoreline during the spring. These swept areas are bass nests or beds. Spawning takes

place when the water temperature reaches 60-75o F. The male constructs the bed and courts a female tospawn, where he then releases his sperm to fertilize the eggs. Fertilized largemouth bass eggs are yellow

to orange in color. The male stands guard over the eggs to protect them from predation and continually

fans the water to keep water moving over the eggs to keep silt from building up on top of them, while the

female leaves once spawning is complete. Largemouth bass sexual maturity is inuenced by size more

than age, with most bass reaching sexual maturity with the ability to spawn at around ten inches. The

largemouth bass in our lakes usually attain this size at about age two. Largemouth bass beds have been

reported to contain anywhere from 5,000 to 45,000 eggs with the differences in number dependent on

the size and condition of the spawned female. The time it takes largemouth bass eggs to hatch is highly

inuenced by water temperature with hatch time at 65o F being about 2 ½ days.

Life for young largemouth bass is hard with very few surviving their rst year. One paper that I found

cited that only two tenths of one percent of young bass made it past their rst year in an Alabama lake.

There are several factors that are considered important in determining survival, most notably time of

spawning, temperature, predation, and available forage and habitat.

Generally speaking, larger bass spawn earlier than smaller bass. This characteristic is important to

young bass survival. Fish that hatch sooner have longer to feed and grow before winter sets in and thus

a greater chance of over winter survival. There is some debate as to whether bass populations with a

large number of big sh have a distinct advantage to maintain a more constant and stable population

in terms of steady recruitment. The down side of having an earlier spawning time is that these sh are

more vulnerable to extreme temperature uctuations than those that

are spawned later when the likelihood of a spring freeze is less likely.

Therefore, the debate goes on. I guess it all depends on what year you

 want to look at.

Temperature plays the most signicant role in early survival of

bass, where it can inuence entire year classes of bass. As stated

earlier temperature determines how long it takes for eggs to hatch, the

longer it takes eggs to hatch the likelihood of predation of those eggs

increases. In addition, once bass hatch they are not mobile, they are

still on the bottom of the bed feeding off a yolk sac.Again, the longera sh is immobile the chances of predation increases signicantly.

Water temperature determines how long it takes for the bass larvae to

develop and become mobile. At 70o F bass are able to swim in about

10 days after hatch, at colder temperatures this time is signicantly

longer.

Once the bass fry become free swimming they must begin to feed

within days or they will die.Bass fry initially feed on zooplankton

(microscopic animals) and the amount of zooplankton is dependant

on phytoplankton (microscopic plants). Lakes that are turbid, acidic,

etc., generally are not productive in terms of plankton production, with

low sh recruitment due to inadequate forage for young sh.Bass fryare voracious feeders needing to feed several times a day. Food passes

through their stomachs every few hours.Over time as the bass grow

they will shift to a sh diet. It is imperative that ample forage sh be

available for both the larger and younger bass. Bass will always eat one

another, but if there are other prey species available the amount of cannibalism will be less.

So when you see a bass on a bed pause and think about what is going on and the journey those young

sh are about to take. With any luck in a few years you’ll have one of those bass that came from that spot

on the end of your line. As always, if you should have any questions concerning this article or have any

other shery questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or call me at

409-384-9572. Good Luck and Good Fishing!

Southeast Texas sloughs, oxbows, bayous and rivers can

fairly vibrate with a primeval energy that either fascinates

or intimidates human visitors to swamps.

On a shing trip earlier this month to one such place,

the dark forest of black gum, green ash, buttonbush and

the towering, Spanish-moss-bearded cypresses encas-

ing the slash of thick, dark-green water hummed with a

constant stream of bird calls. Barred owls barked. Wood

ducks squealed. Warblers warbled. Pileated woodpeckers

yammered. Herons croaked.Cool, still morning air was rich with the distinctive

heavy, organic scent of wet earth, and the water’s surface

wrinkled with swirls and splashes of unseen sh and the

v-shaped wake trailing the silhouette of an alligator lazily

cruising from one bank to the other.

It’s the kind of place where, as a friend said on his

rst visit, “You expect a Hobbit to peak out from behind a

cypress.”

No Hobbits live in the swamps. But creatures just as

mysterious and magical and amazing certainly do live in

the backwaters. One of them arguably is the most appropriate symbol of these atavistic aquatic environments. And this is the

time of year offering the best chance to encounter this singular beast.

I cast a Texas-rig plastic worm against the bell-bottomed base of a cypress and let it fall through the two feet

of water to the tangle of roots.

A “thump!” shot up the line; I reeled down and set the hook into what I suspected would be yet another

largemouth bass.

It was no bass.

Line tore through the water as the powerful sh bore away, stripping drag in steady spurts. The rod and line

blunted the initial run, and the game became a tug of war until the sh reversed its dogged attempt to dive deep,

shot to the surface and came arching and twisting into the air, revealing itself.

It was a bown - the king of the swamp; a sh with as many colloquial names as Satan and a similar disposi-tion; pound-for-pound the strongest, most challenging sh in Texas freshwater; a sh unchanged for more than

100-million years and unlike anything that swims.

The long, cylindrical sh fought powerfully for a bit longer, thrashing and jumping until I worked it to the

side of the boat where it tried a nal escape maneuver unique to this one-of-a-kind species.

The bown began rolling on the surface, doing its best to twist the hook from its mouth.

“That’s what they do; they’ll roll like an alligator,”Todd Driscoll, Jasper-based district biologist for Texas Parks

and Wildlife Department’s inland sheries division, said of the bowns’epic efforts to shed itself of a hook.

That move and the sh’s incredibly powerful jaws, studded with rows of needle-sharp teeth, can so mangle a

hook or lure designed for much less savage sh that the hooks break or bend and lose their purchase.

“They will just destroy a spinnerbait,” Driscoll said.

The 1/0 worm hook held until I slipped a landing net under the sh and lifted it aboard. The hook, its shank now bent almost 90 degrees, fell out.

The sh was a wonderful specimen. It was an average-size adult male, perhaps 5 or 6 pounds, and “lit up”in

spawning colors. Its six ventral ns,the edges of its mouth, its throat and part of its belly were a neon turquoise/

green. Its namesake long dorsal n was rimmed in scarlet, as was its broad, round tail which also was tinted in

neon turquoise and sported a black “eye spot” rimmed with bright orange.

Few freshwater sh more spectacularly colored than a spawning male bown.

But bown have plenty of other qualities that make them one of the

most interesting sh an angler can encounter.

Many Texans and others have never heard a bown called a “bown.”

They’re “grinnel”or “grinners”to most in East Texas. Some call them

“cypress trout”or “mudsh”or “dogsh.”

In Louisiana, they’re “choupique.” And in other states they’re“black

sh”or “cotton sh” or “beaver sh,”describing, respectively,the sh’s

color,hideous culinary quality,and wide tail.

Scientically, they’re Amia calva, and the only surviving member of the

Amiidae family of shes. And they have been here for a long time.Fossil

records of bown indicate the sh have been around in very nearly their

present form for about 150-million years.

Physiologically unchanged for more than 100 million years, bown are

unlike any other sh. While they absorb dissolved oxygen through their

gills like other sh, bown have a swim bladder that functions like a very

inefcient lung, allowing bown to “gulp” air, absorbing oxygen into their

bloodstream.

They can’t live solely on gulped air. But the additional way of breathingmeans they can survive in water that often is low on dissolved oxygen.

And such places are where bown live.

Bown are found only in the eastern half of North America. Texas is

the southwestern edge of their range, and they are found only east of the

Colorado River.

They are most common in the watersheds of generally slow-moving

rivers such as the San Jacinto, Trinity, Neches and Sabine, and particularly

in shallow oxbows and sloughs and other areas with little or no current

and a good supply of aquatic vegetat ion or other cover.

“They are a backwater sh; that’s their preferred habitat,” Driscoll said.

Bown are an uncommon common sh. While they are found in many waters of eastern Texas, nowhere are they found in high densities.

Relatively little scientic research has aimed at bown, so much

remains unknown about these sh. But their low density may be partly a

function of bowns’ position near the top of the piscatorial food chain and

their natural history.

The sh are savage and efcient predators; that mouth lled with

conical teeth voraciously devours smaller sh as well as crawsh, snails,

snakes and just about anything else they can grab and swallow. And top-

end predators typically have low population densities.

It also appears bown population densities are naturally low because

the sh are slow to mature, taking three or more years to reach reproduc-

tive age, and don’t produce huge numbers of young.

“I’ve never caught a small, ngerling bown in seines, and nobody else

I’ve talked with has,”Driscoll said.“You just don’t see them.”

Young bowns also appear to suffer very high mortality. And that may

come from the behavior after they are born.

Bowns begin spawning in spring, when water temperature climbs

near 60 degrees. The female lays her eggs in a dished bed in the shallows,

the male fertilizes them, and the female leaves.

The male bown is a devoted parent, guarding the nest until the eggs

hatch, then shadowing and defending the cloud of fry as they develop into

ngerlings.

But the young bowns remain in very tight groups as they grow to 2

and even 3 inches.Even with the male aggressively defending them, these

schools of baby bown are very vulnerable to predation.

Largemouth bass appear to be a major predator on baby bown. And

that may be why bown don’t do well in large reservoirs.

“I’ve been here 12 years and I sh Rayburn a lot - 80 to 100 days a

year,”Driscoll said. “I’ve probably caught only six or seven bowns overall that time.”

But in the backwaters - the sloughs and bayous and oxbows and other

shallow, still, dark waters where bowns have lived for millions of years -

the sh can be, if not common,at least not uncommon.

Anglers stand their best shot at catching bown during spring, when

the sh sometimes gather in small concentrations to spawn among the

roots of a line of cypress trees or other cover and are even more aggressive

than usual.

Bown aren’t especially particular about what they will attack. The

same lures that work for largemouth bass will draw vicious strikes from

bowns. I’ve caught them on topwaters, crankbaits and soft-plastic wormsand lizards. I’ve had them destroy thin-wire Aberdeen hooks when they

grab a live shiner aimed at crappie. And I’ve even caught on trotlines

baited with live sunsh or chunks of cut bait.

And every one of the dozens I’ve hooked, from the rst one in a old rice

irrigation canal nearly 50 years ago to the most recent just a week or so

ago in a cypress-lined slough, has been like connecting to a bolt of swamp

lightning.

Bown are the perfect reection of the places they live - wild,

erce, powerful, primeval, stunningly beautiful and maybe just a little

dangerous.

Anglers Quest 2011 Individual 1st Series # 4 was held on Lake Sam Rayburn at the Umphrey Pavilion

April 3, 2011. The event hosted thirteen anglers who showed up to sh for the $1245.00 purse. This 4th event

of 2011 was started as a trailering event because of very high winds predicted for the day. The anglers were

allowed to travel to a ramp of their choice and leave at 6:45 am. The weigh in time was conducted at 3:15 pm.

Lake Sam Rayburn’s water was in good shape at about 7.60 feet below normal pool level with water temps

running 64-66 degrees. The weather at takeoff was a windy 64 degrees with a warming to 81 degrees by weigh

in time. The sh catching continued to be very good on Big Sam as there were 11 bagged limits brought to

the scales, for a total of 55 bass at 144.38 lbs making the average bass brought to the scales on Sunday weigh

2.62 lb.

Tommy Hill from Kountze, Tx ran his Bullet/Mercury bass rig to various grassy southern lake areas andcaught his bass with his line tipped with Bill Lewis Rattle Traps in 3-5 ft of water. Hill managed to cull several

times during his day to nish in rst place with 21.01 lbs that made him $750.00 for his day on the water.

Joe Layton from Jasper, Tx ran his bass rig to mid-lake points over grassy areas to catch his bass throwing

small cranks & traps in 4-7 ft of water. Layton managed to catch several keepers to nish in second place with

his best ve at 17.53 lbs and netted him $300.00 for his day of shing.

Mike Dorcz from Humble, Tx ran his Bullet/Mercury bass rig to areas on the south end of the lake and

nished his day in 3rd with 5 bass at 15.28 lbs. Danny Cross from Lufkin, Tx nished in 4th with ve bass at

14.49 lbs, with one at 7.51 lbs landing him the Big Bass title.

OPTIONS I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT by Pro Guide Joe Joslin

Hello, Anglers. Like most anglers who have spent a lot of time

on the water this year, we have battled almost constant winds

with numerous days of winds over 20 mph and some even 30

mph. This windy, drought-type weather conditions have made

shing much more difcult and has made me realize even more

the importance of certain boat features that have not always

been available to us. I’m going to talk about three features on

the front of my 21 Skeeter FX that makes my day much easier asI have logged well over 200 days a year on the water for the past

12 years.

The rst is the recessed area for the trolling motor foot con-

trol. Wow!! I don’t know who came

up with that idea but I owe them

a hug...or a hand shake if you are

not condent of your man-hood.

Like many anglers, I stand up

99% of the time and having that

foot control pedal at deck level is

simply awesome. What a back and

leg-saving device not to mention

being able to keep your balance

 when being tossed around in

rough water. I shed in a guy’s

boat a few weeks ago that did not

have the recessed pedal and could

hardly stand up and sh. It is

amazing how quickly we become

accustom to features that make

things more convenient. Another is the gas-cylinder

assist lift on my Minn Kota Fortrex

trolling motor. This is another

major labor saving device as it absorbs half the effort to raise and

lower the big 36 volt 101 pound thrust electric trolling motor.

There is no telling how many times I raise/lower the trolling

motor each week and to have that weight cut in half is a huge

factor. Without that option I might have to opt for the smaller 24

volt system and not have the staying power of the bigger unit. I

looked in to the electric auto lift that came out a few years ago

and was not impressed at the engineering and reliability. The third and nal feature is not as technical or costly but

still a very neat feature.....padded carpet on the bow area. This is

only about a $100 ad-on option but it too makes a mega differ-

ence at the end of the shing day when you have been standing

for 8 hours. The padding is not thick and does not alter the

‘snag-proof’ characteristics of the boat carpet. The three features

mentioned are all on the front/bow of the boat but that is where

boat owners/anglers spend the most time. If I could only have

only one of the three it would be the recessed foot control for

the trolling motor followed by the assist lift and then the padded

carpet. However, after having these features and experiencing

how comfortable and efcient they make the bow of my boat, the

word ‘options’ just might not be appropriate as I now depend on

these features for me to perform my work as a guide and tourna-

ment angler. Finally....please pray for rain!

God Bless.

Over $50,000 was won by Bass Champs East

Texas Region anglers April 9, 2011. Nearly 200

teams got their workout trying to get a chunk of

it, battling each other and Mother Nature too.

Dallas Cole and Chris Clemens came out on top

 winning over $20,000.

Tournament angling is an athletic sport. It is

a full day of operating a boat, hundreds of casts,

trying to outwit sh and competing against other

anglers. When Mother Nature wants to play too,

it just makes it that much more challenging. The

air temp was well within toleration, in the mid to

upper 80’s. There was no rain. The wind, however,

made up for the lack of the other elements

making traveling difcult, casting challenging to

say the least, feeling bites was rather tricky, and

trolling motors were put to the test. Trailering was

allowed on this excessively windy day so anglerscould launch closer to their shing areas.

As anglers began trickling in to the weigh in,

many weights in the upper teens were registered.

Darrell and Dylan Lyons brought in the rst exact

weight of the day, having an opportunity to win

the Skeeter Dealer sponsor incentive.“The rst

team that brings in an exact even weight can

win $100 if they have a business card from any

Skeeter Dealer on them,”Chad Potts explained. He

asked them“Do you have one?” Dylan smiled and

produced the business card winning the bonus.

Their ofcial 19.00 lbs took the lead at that

time, but fell in the standings as more teams

came in.

Hot dogs fresh off the grill is served at every

Bass Champs tournament for anyone present to

enjoy. Hungry anglers and spectators lined up

to get them, also buying chances to win several

draw prizes including Abu Garcia Reels, Conti-

nental batteries, Academy Gift Cards and more.

Weights over the 20 pound mark started

showing up on the leader board, and once

the scales were closed Dallas Cole and Chris

Clemens were declared the winners with their

24.54 lb limit.

They didn’t have the luxury of nding sh in

protected areas from the wind.“We stayed right

in the wind all day on main lake points, but were able to at least tie off to a stump in some

areas to give us and our trolling motor a break.

We tried a smorgasbord of baits, but most of our

sh were caught on a Carolina rigged uke.” They

were casting their baits into the wind, causing

several backlashes. “I can’t say we felt all of our

bites, but we caught all the ones we did feel.” They

had started out with topwater baits in the early

part of the morning and lost one before switching

to other lures. They put together a limit, then

culled six times before days end to complete their

24.54 lb winning limit.“I’m glad we nally did

it! We’ve been bumped to 2nd a few times, this is

our rst 1st place win.” Bass Champs presented

them with the guaranteed $20,000 check and for

using the Sure Life Please Release Me product in

their livewell they additionally received that bonus

of $200.

“FINALLY!” Dallas Cole & Chris Clemens win over $20,000 at

Bass Champs on Sam Rayburn By Patty Lenderman / Lakecaster

Dallas Cole and Chris Clemens stayed on top to

win over $20,000 with their 24.54 lb limit. Firstword: FINALLY!

Holding up the best to of the bunch that won 2nd place with

a total weight of 22.15 lbs was Chris Russell, who teamedwith Mike Power to win 2nd place overall Brian Branum and KeithWhite caught an all chunk l imit totaling 20.72 lbs to win 3rd place overall

Chris Russell & Mike Power won 2nd place with their 22.15 lb

limit. “We were mostly cranking, in windy coves at the backs of

creeks.” Targeting water 6’-8’ deep, they used shallow diving crank baits, diving to 2’ under the surface in shad colors. “We were run-

ning them just outside the grass edges.” Only hitting a couple of

spots, they boated 12 keepers throughout the day to cull from. “We

lost a few that could have made a difference for us, but that’s how it

goes!”The team was presented $4,000 for their 2nd place win.

3rd place was won by Keith White and Brian Branum with a

total of 20.72 lbs. “The morning went really well for us, the bite

was fast and furious.” Possibly a little superstitious, they feel it is

generally bad luck to catch a sh on the rst cast. Therefore, they

started out by each casting short – about 10’.“We didn’t want to

catch anything on our rst casts, so just put our baits out a short

distance. We caught sh anyway!” They went after post spawn sh

in the backs of coves. “The sh were biting really well until the wind

picked up, then it tapered off until after lunch.” They were using

Santone Swim jigs with Gambler Flappy trailers in shallow water.

“We ran into problems with our trolling motor around 10am. It just

quit. Luckily, we had a spare in the boat and had it installed within

30 minutes and got back to shing.”They estimate catching 70 bassthroughout the day to win $2,000. They would like to thank Fun

N Sun Boating Center, the Tackle Monkey, Santone Lures, Gambler

Baits, Skeeter, Yamaha “and a special thanks to R-1 Bass. Ray

(owner of R-1 Bass) xed our spare trolling motor keeping us going

on the water.”

Casey Sobczak shed with his dad Gary and latched on to the

biggest bass of the day weighing 7.75 lbs.“I caught her while shing

a point with scattered grass with a 6th Sense square bill crank bait

around 8am.” The team won $1,000 for that catch which anchored

their 25th place overall nish that paid $600. They also won the

Costa bonus for wearing their sunglasses while weighing the big sh

for another $200.

With only one tournament left to go in the East Texas Region, the

Angler of the Year race is stacked. The team with the highest points

at the conclusion of the nal event will be declared Anglers of the

Year for that region and receive free entries into the 2012 season.

Being Fire Wise

By Robert Baker, TPWD

During this time of extreme re danger there are stories of

wildres burning all over Texas. Some people are wondering what

they can do to protect themselves and their property. There are

some very important things that can be done to accomplish this.

The Texas Forest Service has a “re Wise”program that outlines

much of this information. In this article I will break it down

into 2 sections which include your burning activities and those

pertaining to your property.

First thing before any outdoor burning (trash, brush, leaves,

etc.) is done a person should check and see if there is a county

burn ban in effect. This can be done at the following web site www.

tfsfrp.tamu.edu/wildres/decban.png . At the time when I wrote

this article (Mid April) burn bans were in effect in Jasper, Sabine,

San Augustine, Newton,Tyler, Angelina, and Shelby Counties to

name some around the lakes area.

When it is legal to burn there are some basic things that will

help to keep res from getting out of control. Many res start as

trash or brush res.

• Clear the ground of anything combustible for a large area

around the burn area (this can include things such as grass,

limbs, leaves, and other debris).

• Do not leave your re unattended.

• Have hand tools and a water hose close by and ready to go.

• When burning trash use a barrel with a mesh cover to keep

embers from leaving the barrel.

• Postpone burning until vegetation around the burn area has

“greened up”.

When protecting your house and property from re, the

following tips should be utilized.

• Create defensible space (area that does not have combustible

fuels) around all structures. At least 30 feet is preferable.

• Establish re breaks around the boundary of your property.

• Clear roof regularly to remove buildup of leaves and other

debris.

• Ensure that emergency vehicles can access your property.

• Place connected garden hoses on all sides of your house.

• Place phone numbers for the re department and other

emergency agencies near the phone.

• Make sure that family members know emergency exits from

 your home and neighborhood

• Do not stack combustibles such as re wood, lumber, wooden picnic tables etc.against any structure.

• Place LPG tanks far enough away from structures so that

valves can be shut off in the event of re and maintain clear

areas around the tank.

Using these simple tips and common sense will make a person

“Fire Wise”. During these times of extreme re danger this can

make the difference in coming home to a home or a smoldering

pile of coals. For more information contact your local Texas Forest

Service ofce www.texasforestservice.tamu.edu or Texas Parks and

 Wildlife Department www.tpwd.state.tx.us.

May 2011, should be a little differentas the lake has been low since last yearand the grass has been on the thin sidein a lot of places. So far we haven’t hadany rain to speak of. This means a lotless water for the sh to hide in. Also,a lot of humps that are normally underthe water by several feet are now justunder the surface by a few inches. Thismakes for some very tricky running. Itcan be done. Remember you’ve got tostay on your toes and go easy till you getused to the areas you’re going to be in.

The topwater bite will be early inthe morning and late in the afternoon.Break out your Yellow Magic and Ribbit,

they are the baits to start with. Thelily pads and some of the grass will bebreaking the surface. They make forsome great shing as the sh get intothe summer pattern. This is when youget to watch your bait as you work itacross the surface of the water - waitingfor that Big Ole’Bass to come up, clobberit and try to make a meal of it!! It’s themost exciting time of the year for some.Make sure you’ve got good line on as youmay have to haul her out of some pretty

thick stuff. Some sh will slide off to deeper

water and set up off points and humps. That can be cool fun and a chance touse lots of different baits. Drag out thecrankbaits and Carolina rigs. We’ve beenusing some new Strike Pro crankbaitsand been doing pretty good off the mainlake points. Don’t overlook the Stanley Football Jigs around some of the ledgesand creek channels. There’s one thingthat you really need to look at when working this kind of bait. That’s the rod you’re using. If you don’t feel the bite, you’re not going to set the hook. Thatsounds simple. The bite can get so light

that you won’t feel her pick up the bait.A big sh is like a big vacuum, it can suck a ½ oz jig off the bottom of the lake and you can hardly feel it. What most peoplefeel is the sh spiting it out and you feelit as it drops to the bottom. Bottom line, don’t cut yourself short here, a good rodand sensitive line is a must. The TeamSeries Rod from American Rodsmiths isone that will get the job done. These rodshave the sensitivity that you need to feelthese light bites. Remember these bites

can be very light and the sh will nothold on long. When you rst feel thatlittle tap you’ve got to set the hook, don’t wait to feel the weight. This will changesome so you have to be on your toes tokeep up.

The Crappie will be starting to setupon the brush piles and can stir up a lot of excitement. The new pontoon has beendoing great with lots of room and fun foreveryone.Gatherup yourshing buddiesand give mea call toget your tripbookedfor the summer.

I want to thank my sponsors andmany friends that have helped makethis a great year. Stanley Jigs, American

Rodsmiths, E2 Bait Company, Terry andConnie at Jackson Hill Park and Marina, Jerry and Glenda at Bass Strike Tackle,Knupps Corner Store and Larry at TriLake Tackle. I hope everyone has a greattime out there and please be safe on the water.

Wind and no rain seems to be theforecast for us, we ain’t had a goodrain in so long the little sh haven’tlearned to swim yet! Surely we will getsome rain soon. All in all the shing

has beengood though, we are catchinggood numbers of bass and crappiealready and it’s sure early in the year.

With gas prices like they are we stillhad a good turn out for the Big BassSPLASH. As usual, The Sealy Crew dida good job and everyone had a greattime. Congrats to all the winners. We

would like to thank everyone thatcame to sh, shop and stay with usduring the tournament. We hope youall had a good stay and will come back to see us real soon.

If you came out this way I hope youtook time to look around at all thegoings on around Rayburn Country. The new country club is coming

along real nicely, the swimming poolis getting a face lift and new signsare going up everywhere. The new entrance sign is started and everythingjust seems to be taking shape nicely.

Now let’s Fish!!!! The bass areeverywhere! One day you catch ‘em ona swim jig, the next on a crank bait, could be a big worm or a Carolina rig

you just don’t know with the waterlevel changing just about daily. Aboutall I can tell you is go shing, becareful and take lots of stuff with youto sh with.

Now on the other hand, the Crappieare totally lost. The low water leveland early warm weather has these shreally messed up. On the north end of the lake they are still on the grass, youcan catch some on road runners in2 – 5 ft of water. I have been tippinga roadrunner head with a Big Bite jig

tail in black and chartreuse as wellas with my old stand by the Stanley

Wedge Tail minnow – there are 6 or7new colors in the stores now. On thesouth end there ain’t no grass, so do

the best you can. I think I would look at your old brush piles

Won’t be long until the Bream willbe moving in, a few crickets and some

worms should do the trick That’s about it for now, one more

thing please be careful on the water. We don’t want anyone hurt this year.Give us a call about our new programcalled Bass And Birdies we are mixingshing and golf, I think you will likethis. You all come see us at The TigerCreek Lodge too, and remember if wecan help just call.

Most all of us shermen dream of sharing the boat with a leading

bass pro and learning rst-hand what they do to win a tourna-

ment. Well in April I had just that opportunity when to served as a

Marshall in the Bassmaster Elite Series TroKar Battle on the

Bayou on beautiful Toledo Bend Lake. Hopefully the information you read in this article will not only help your shing but also serve

as a guide if you plan to participate in one of these future events.

The Bassmaster Elite Series Marshal Program was designed

to allow B.A.S.S. members to share the boat with an Elite Series pro

during competition. The program replaced the co-angler division at

Elite tournaments. The purpose of a Marshal was to (1) Observe the

pro and make sure that all tournament rules were followed and (2)

If selected on day 3 and 4, to operate BASSTrakk, a cell phone based

scoring technology developed by ESPN that broadcasts up-to-date

data throughout the day to Bassmaster.com fans through the use

of BASSCast, an onboard camera developed by ESPN Technology.Marshall’s are not allowed in any way to share information with the

pro’s that could help them locate or catch sh.

The Marshall entry fee for this event was $100. I signed up in

early February (www.Bassmaster.com/Marshals) , and was then

placed on a waiting list. A few weeks before the event I was notied

by B.A.S.S. that I had been selected, and soon received an informa-

tion package that included the Marshall schedule. I might mention

that entry fees are refundable if you are not selected from the wait-

ing list. For the $100 there is a guarantee of two days on the water

with two randomly selected pros, with the potential of participating

a third day with the Top 50. The fourth and last day would be a

contest between the 12 pros that made the nal cut, with six B.A.S.S.cameramen and six selected Marshall’s participating.

At tournament time the water level on Toledo Bend was about 7

½-feet low.The lake was drawn down last September to complete

a dam repair project, and the rainfall that was expected to help ll

it back up just never happened. The shing at Toledo Bend for the

past month has been outstanding but as with all tournaments, the

weather could be the deciding factor.

The journey began at the beautiful Cypress Bend Resort and

Conference Center where each of the Marshalls were given an of-

cial jersey and cap to be worn while on the water, along with a ditty

bag of assorted items. Next there was the Fellowship of Christian Anglers (FOCAS)group meeting where an excellent message was de-

livered by Chaplin Chris Webb. From there it was to a Marshall brief-

ing where we were all advised of the rules and given the opportunity

to ask any questions we might have. Immediately after this meeting

we were paired with our pro for the rst day. I could not have more

pleased as I was teamed with pro angler Stephen Browning of Hot

Springs, Arkansas. Browning is 45 years old, has appeared in seven

Classics and certainly knows what to do to put bass in the boat.

After the pre-tournament meeting we were treated to a wonder-

ful dinner and a reception hosted by the Sabine Parish Tourist

Commission, which also sponsored the Saturday and Sunday fan

activities at the park. What a great meal and a great bunch of folks. There are a few important items that need to be addressed before

tournament morning. Make sure that you know the exact time

and place that you and your pro partner are going to meet. Also

exchange cell phone numbers, just in case there is a change in

plans. Be sure that you know what type and color vehicle he will be

driving and the color and brand of his boat. Things get pretty con-

fusing early in the morning with many boats and other Marshall’s

milling around trying to nd each other. Items you will need in the

boat should include raingear, a life jacket if you have special needs,

sunscreen, drinks and snacks, prescribed medication, sunglasses and

your camera (still pictures only).Day one –

I met Browning at the Cypress Bend Park launching area about

7am. We were boat #2 in the rst ight.It was a beautiful morning

with slightly overcast skies as the National Anthem music drifted out

across the pavilion area. When boat #2 was called we idled past the

tournament committee for the live-well check and then Browning

put the hammer down and we headed south. Our rst stop was in

the McGee Flats area where a Carolina-rigged uke was cast to a

that is not always a good sign.Eight more bass were caught from

this area and a few of these were keepers, but Browning chose not

to put them in the livewell since he had caught many this size while

pre-shing and needed more weight if he was going to make it to

the nals. At 8:30 we moved to a sharp drop-off and the C-rig and a

green-shad pattern crankbait went to work. Three more bass came

into the boat but none were“keepers”.The wind was starting to pick up about 9am as we motored to another ridge in the same general

area. At 9:30 a solid 3-pounder came into the boat. Now we were

cooking! By 10:25 there were three solid bass in the livewell and we

made a run to Mill Creek. Browning was somewhat frustrated since

he was catching a number of “spots” in areas that he had previously

been catching quality bass. After shing three more locations and

catching small bass, we headed back to the spot where Browning

had caught the 3-pounder and there he nished out his limit. Now

it was time to go looking for a heavyweight. Browning gured he

had about 11+-pounds of bass and denitely needed a“kicker” so

we headed to Indian Mounds.More bass were caught but Browning was only able to cull one sh. At weigh-in his ve bass limit weighed

a respectable 12-pounds 2-ounces, and that placed him in 66th

place. For me it was a great day and I learned quite a bit more about

an area of the lake that I actually sh quite often.

At the end of the rst days weigh-in, partners were posted for the

next day.I was paired with Jeff Connella of Bentley, Louisiana, a pro

angler who had weighed in 14-6 and was in 39th place.

Day two –

At 6:15am the next morning I met Connella at Toledo Tackle

and we headed to the launch site. When they called out boat #33 we

headed north, went under the Pendleton Bridge, and shut it down

in a cove near the entrance of Patroon Bayou. Connella’s“go to

bait” is a watermelon colored wacky worm and he shes it well. His

rst bass weighed about 2+-pounds and was caught at 8am. This

was followed by two more 2-pounders in the following hour.At one

point a huge sh hit his small plastic speed craw and I thought the

sh of the tournament was getting ready to be landed. The “bass”

turned out to be a Grinnell and both of us were very disappointed.

 After catching a few more

short sh Connella landed

bass number four at 9:25am. At 10:15 the fth bass was

landed and the pressure was

off. The wind was really star-

ing to be an issue, especially

trying to feel a bite on the

 wacky worm rig. Three sh

 were culled and we estimated

that there was a solid 14-

pounds of bass in the livewell.

More sh were caught but

Connella was never able tocull his smallest bass that

 weighed 2-09.

At one point as the wind

really started to blow, I com-

mented that it wasn’t right

to see “dust storms”on the

shoreline of Toledo Bend. At

4 pm we headed for a 4:15 pm weigh-in.I f you have ever seen an

angry ocean, that is exactly what Toledo Bend looked like when we

crossed under the Pendleton Bridge.Whitecaps were everywhere and

the wind was howling. Connella is a good boat driver and we were

never in any danger, however, the ride was a roller-coaster and most

of the participants got soaking wet from either taking a wave over

the front or from wind blown spray. We made it to the weigh-in site

with one minute to spare. At this point it was general chaos since

the wind was howling and anglers were trying to nd places to

temporarily park their boats in the shallow water area to get their

sh bagged and weighed in. I am sure that some of the Marshall’s

had some exciting tales to tell their friends about the boat ride in to

 weigh-in.

My name was not drawn as a Marshall for Saturday, but I under-

stand that a few of the Marshall’s had seen enough of windy Toledo

Bend and alternates were selected.

Participating as a Marshal was a very unique and fun experience

that cannot help but increase an anglers shing knowledge and

skills. It is basically a personal seminar on shing techniques and a

great opportunity to rub elbows with some of the nest shermen in

the world. I would do it again in a heartbeat. My congratulations to

B.A.S.S. for coming up with such a quality program.

Good Fishing – JB

(Both Browning and Connella wound up shing in Satur-

day’s event but did not make Sundays cut. Browning nished

21st with 44-1 and Connella nished 42nd with 37-5. Both of

these gentlemen were class acts and I enjoyed sharing the boat

 with them.)

There were 95 sh brought to the scales with a total weight of 196.05 lbs

yielding a 2.06 lb average per sh. Most anglers reported catching their sh onCarolina and Texas rigged soft plastics with a baby brush hog being the most

www.toledobendguide.com • [email protected] • 936.368.7151Going into May the lake

is about 8ft below high pool

and it looks like unless wehave a real gully washer it

will continue to drop. In thesummer we can lose a half-

inch or more through evaporation a day plus the amount of  water that is released at the dam. No telling how low the lakemayget.

The black bass will be in transition, heading back to deep water.

Early morning and late evening we’ll work the shallow ats close to deep water and main and secondary points withbuzzbaits, stickbaits, swimming frogs, spinnerbaits, topwaterplugs, shallow diving cranks, nesse and soft plastics until

the sun gets over head. Once the sun gets overhead and the

shallow bite slows down, we’ll back out to deeper water andconcentrate in the bends of the creeks with crank baits andTexas or Carolina rigged soft plastics. Later in the month asthe water continues warming and the lake is usually falling,

the main lake points, river channel ledges, ridges and humps will become more productive. If you can nd the structure

and cover holding bait -sh you will usually nd the bass.Schooling activity will start increasing as the water continues

 warmingsokeepashallowdivingcrankbait,liplesscrankbaitandtop water plughandy forschooling bass.

It’s time for the bream to be moving into shallows tospawn. An ultra lite spinning rig, jigging pole, y rod or just abamboo pole you can cut off the side of the road can be usedto catch these feisty sh.You can use a clip on cork, slip cork,or straightline castinga small insect typelure (beetle spin, in-

line spinner or small jigs) but the most popular baits are livebaits- crickets,or worms (redwigglers, catalpa,or meal).

The simplest way to locate the beds is to look for honeycone circles along the bank. The beds will extend out from

the shore- line in a semi circle. Some say they can locate a

bed by the strong “shy” odor emitted from the bed. Usually,if you nd one bed there will be more beds relatively close. However, some bream will bed up in deeper water as much as10ft. Dragginga small beetle spinon the bottom will helpyou

locate thedeeper beds. Whenyoustartshingthebed,targettheoutsideedgesofthe

bed rst and work inward. If you pick off the shallow sh rstthehookedbreamwillrunthroughthebed scatteringthe othersh. If yourcatchstartsslowingup, moveontoanother bedandlet that one rest. The bream will move back onto the bed if not

disturbed. Bream shing will denitely get a kid “Hooked onFishing”-plentyof action,a lotof funand “Good Eats”!

ThisyearwiththelowlakelevelalotoftheWhiteBassdidn’tmigratetotheriverproperandspawnedonthemainlakesandbars. Usually this time of year the Whites are migrating from

theriverto themainlake.Since theyspawned inthe mainlakethis year, they are starting move further south earlier thannormal and are moving into a summer pattern. The Whites

will be following the shad and the schooling activity will be

pickingup.

The Crappie will be moving back from their shallow spawning ats into deeper water. Work shiners and jigs overcover in 15 to 25ft of water at the mouth of the creeks andpockets leading to the mainlake.

LAKE CONDITIONS:

The lake level is 164.19feet and without amiracle or a tropicalstorm, the lake willremain low for months.

Dry winds continue to blow and numerous days withsmall craft advisories have been the normal. Hopefully,May will see this improve. Water conditions are goodall over the lake with some staining due to high windsblowing across ridges and points. The south end of the

lake remains very clear with the north having slightlystained conditions. Water temps are running from 73-75degrees andthismonthwe will seewater tempsreachthe upper 70s to low 80s.

FISHING REPORTS/BASS: There are severalpatterns catching bass including the Carolina rig whichallows the angler to maintain contact with the bait in

high winds and still make a natural presentation tothe bass. Some of the favorite plastics on Carolina rigsincludeBerkley‘s 6 inch PowerLizards,Stanley‘s WedgeHogs, Swimming Senkos and Flukes. I continue tosteadily catch bass using a light weighted Texas rig withBerkley Wacky Crawlers, 7 and 10 inch Power Worms,

Wedge Hogs and Trick worms.Stanley’s Y-Nots rigged with weighted weedless hooks

arealsocatchingbassontoughdaysandI liketo rigthemon Stanley’s T-wacky hooks which are weedless and arealso weighted and come with Mustad hooks. The Y-Not

are also great on jigs as jig trailers, especially the Y-Not3.5inchversions.The neat thingabouta Y-Notis that thetwolegswantto oat andstand almoststraight up.

We are also having good success on Berkley ‘s new Havoc swimbait, the Grass Pig. Basically, we have beenshingit Texas-weedless/weightless as well aswell as ona very light Carolina rig on windy points and ridges.

The wackyrigis alsogettingbites in6 to14 feetearlyand late when the wind dies down as well as all day

when we have minimal wind. The Texas rig and a shortCarolina rig are doing well on main points in feedercreeks as well as main lake points.

CRAPPIE AND BREAM: The crappie are movingdeeper and anglers are starting to nd good numbersin baited brush in 15 to 25 feet on live shiners and jigs. They also are being caught “strolling” with electrictrolling motor alongthe outsideedgeof thegrassin 8 to15feetwithcrappie jigs, BeetleSpins andRoadRunners.

Bream are moving into shallow water in large numbersand should move on to beds very soon.

BL Team tournament on Sam Rayburn

Mere ounces, sometimes less separated many of the top weights April 10, 2011 at the Bud Light Trail Team

tournament. The band of warriors that braved Sam Rayburn were quite weary after battling 30+ mph winds

all day.Very few tried to hide from the howling wind and waves, but squared off with it to meet the challenge.

Trailering was allowed to more safely reach their destinations on the water. Brian Branum & Ken Smith won

1st place by a margin of two ounces.

Mother Nature seems to have her timing a little off. The temperatures have been wonderful, spring-like in

the 80’s.However, it is April and as most of us remember it, March is known for its wind. April is known for

its rain. May is known for its owers – right? We seem to be getting all of March’s wind and none of April’s

showers.And the wind was brutal.

Fishing back to back tournaments, and having done well the prior day, Keith & Brian stated that they had

done exactly the same thing for this tournament. “We went back to the same area we shed before, and thesh were still there. They went after post spawn sh in the backs of coves using Santone Swim jigs with Gam-

bler Flappy trailers in shallow water.Another angler shing near them described the action he witnessed as

quite a show.“They just kept catching sh! Probably one out of three casts they would reel one in.”Their

limit weighed 20.98 lbs, winning 1st place. They would like to thank Fun N Sun Boating Center, the Tackle

Monkey, Santone Lures, Gambler Baits, Skeeter, Yamaha“and a special thanks to R-1 Bass. Ray (owner of

R-1 Bass) xed our spare trolling motor keeping us going on the water.”

Chris McCall and Clayton Boulware, “Team Tackle Monkey”, won 2nd place with their 20.84 lb stringer.

“Man, was it WINDY!”Chris began. “We went to the same spot we won another tournament in a few weeks

ago. It is a pocket with a tricky little creek channel bend in it that has been stacked with sh.”Their day

started out well, catching one over 3 lbs and another over 5. “We were using V&M green pumpkin worms

with a Gene Larew Bife Bug hard head. When the bite slowed down, we moved to another spot and nishedour limit.”They switched to a swim jig for a while, and caught sh but couldn’t cull any with them. “After

1:00 we went back to our rst spot and caught our two best sh of the day to wrap it up.”The team would

like to acknowledge the Tackle Monkey, and each of their sponsors: (McCall) Ranger, Evinrude, Abu Garcia,

Berkley, Gambler, Santone, and Tour Star Rods. (Boulware) Nitro, Mercury, Stanley, V&M, H & H rods, Strike

King, Dusty Rhodes Marine and Bass Pro Shops.

3rd place was won by Daniel Chambers and Todd Littleton with a total weight of 20.23 lbs. These guys

have been best friends since college and are business partners in Precision Builders of Shreveport.“We

All the way to Sam Rayburn from Denver Colorado was Ryder Hoey, Great Nephew of Mike Driscoll and cousin to Todd Driscoll,TPWD District Fisheries Biologist. He had fun catching a variety of sh, and learned to catch and release when it came to bass!

Colton Sonnier of Kountze killed a Big Tom at Wiergate Hunting Club. It had a 12” beard and 11/4”spurs. His dad called him in.

Tommy Jacks, of Broaddus, and Buddy Brucia,of Hemphill, caught this 46 lb. catsh, on Rayburn, while camping at San Augustine Park. They also caught their limit with a rod and reel, but theives decided to take their sh before they cleaned them! The next day was better, though; limited again, and cleaned them before the thieves could get to the sh!

Della Sympson did a catch and release with this nice 8 lb bass on her rst visit to Sam Rayburn.Great Job! From Jackson Hill Marina

The 56th Annual Texas State Bass Tournament started on Saturday April 9 and nished on

Sunday April 10 with tough conditions including wind, heat, and low water on Toledo Bend.

The Annual Texas State Bass Tournament is thought of as a reunion for anglers that all come

together every year to sh the event. The event is heralded as the “oldest bass tournament in the

world” as well as the rst of its kind.

The notoriety of the tournament and its members could be seen easily by any spectator as anglers

weighed in their catch for the day and made their rounds in the pavilion to different groups to

compare their days as well as showing their support for those still coming to weigh in.

It seemed that the tournament functioned as an “anglers family reunion” rather than a com-

year of tradition on Toledo Bend By Staff Writer Jodie Warner

Jim Moroski of Hemphill took home rst

overall after the two day event with a totalweight of 18.74 lbs.

old, individuals or teams or even couples. It was founded in 1955 by Earl Golding,

an Outdoor Writer and had 73 participants with the grand prize being a day on the

lake, new friends, and bragging rights. According to sources the creation of this

tournament lead to the beginning of other inventions and innovations in the sh-ing world including the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society.

Since its creation the Texas State Bass Tournament has created a trail with

footsteps hard to ll for other tournament trails, even those offering large payouts;

when it comes to this tournament I guess you just can’t trade tradition for any-

thing, not even dollars and shiny new prizes.

Who would think that way back in 1967 when 106 shermen

competed in Ray Scott’s rst event that shing bass tournaments could

obtain such elite status in the sporting world. When the “Classic” was

held on Lake Mead near Las Vegas, Nevada, rst prize in that “winner

take all” battle was $10,000 and only a handful of spectators cheered

them on.The winner of the TroKar Battle on the Bayou at Toledo

Bend Lake took home $100,000 and the Cypress Bend Park pavilion

was packed with cheering fans all four days of competition. It was one of

the most exciting events to ever come to the Texas/Louisiana area and

here is what took place.

Day One - The tournament started with a slightly overcast sky, scat-tered rain and the forecast of w-i-n-d, possibly in the 20+mph range.

Toledo Bend’s water level may be almost 8-feet low but that did not put

a damper on the enthusiasm of the 99 Pro Elite anglers as they took off

for all parts of this great shery in search of a big bag of bass.

Dean Rojas had 16 pounds of bass in his livewell by 10 am, and that

really had to be an awesome feeling. This Arizona pro then went looking

for the big spawning bass and caught a 7-1 followed by a 5-pounder that

gave him a total of 23-1 to take the rst day lead. Rojas spent most of his

time sight shing and rumor had it that the majority of his sh came

on a Big Bite Baits Warmouth, the same lure he used on the St. Johns

River in Florida a month before.Fred Roumbanis from Oklahoma brought in 21-3 and was in second

place. He was catching “cruising” bass that were suspended about 6-feet

off the bottom. Roumbanis was tight-lipped about the bait he was using

but said the wind helped his shing. Third place went to rookie Brandon

Palaniuk who had 20-6 and stated that he was sight shing. He caught

his biggest bass that weighed 7-4, about 15 minutes before he had to

come to weigh-in. Local favorite Todd Faircloth nished in fourth place

with 20-4 and Steve Kennedy with 20-0. Big bass of the day was a 7-14

caught by pro angler Chris Lane.

Day Two – Heavy clouds and worrisome lightning greeted anglers,

but by the time the rst ight was scheduled to leave the only problem

was a forecast calling for winds in the 15 to 20 mph range - with

higher gusts during the afternoon. By noon the wind was starting to be

a real problem for most anglers but not for Rojas who had relocated

his shing to a fairly protected area.He continued to stroke the sh

as he wound up with a bag that weighed 19-13, and 42-14 for the two

days of shing. He caught a lunker that weighed 7-15 about 1 pm, and

that really helped in allowing him to cull up and keep his lead in the

tournament.

Aaron Martens, one of the most consistent anglers on the circuit,

rallied from 13th to second place with a 21-13 bag of bass which was

one of the day’s best weights. Martens was ghting not only the windbut also a u bug that had him feeling pretty bad. Randy Howell moved

into third place with a bag weighing 19-0, and a two day total of 37-11.

Fourth was David Walker who had the biggest bag of the day with 24-0,

two day total of 37-6, and it moved him from 53rd place. Rounding out

the top-ve was Gerald Swindle with 16-12, two day total of 36-5. Big

bass of the day was a lunker weighing 10-15 caught by Ish Monroe. He

was ipping a Berkley 6-inch watermelon lizard to what he thought was

a submerged bridge structure.

The wind forecast was denitely an understatement. I was on the

water and the wind was in the 20-25mph range with gusts reaching

40mph. I have never seen dust storms like that on the shoreline of To-ledo Bend. The surface of the lake was a mixture of churning whitecaps,

deep swells and most of the anglers returning to the weigh-in site had

a relieved look on their faces and water dripping from their raingear.

Ohio pro Brody Broderick broke his trolling motor off its mount and

California pro Ish Monroe had about $10,000 worth of rods and reels go

overboard when a wave crashed over the bow of his boat.

Day Three – A brisk wind and cooler temperatures greeted the

anglers and the forecast was for sunny skies and light winds of about 6

mph. That was great to hear. At the end of the shing day Dean Rojas

once again held off all challengers by weighing in 14-9, making his total

for the three days 57-7.This gave him a lead of more than four pounds

over second place pro David Walker, who had 53-6. Rojas continued to

target spawning sh, moving to new areas each day.

Gerald Swindle improved two places Saturday, from fth to third

with 52-0 and stated that he was chunking square-lipped crankbaits,

jerkbaits, chatterbaits, and covering a lot of water. He offered that most

of his better spots were on windblown points. Aaron Martens still had u

symptoms but took fourth place with 51-10.Close behind in fth place

 was Chris Lane with 51-6.

Day Four – What a beautiful morning! Clear skies and calm waters

greeted the anglers as they motored away from the launching area.

Water temperature was in the high 60’s and it was obvious that the bass

the grass and working his bait through them. I asked Rojas about shing a frog since he is well known for his

“froggin”. He stated that the frog produced smaller bass in practice so he just stayed with the Popper.

Gerald Swindle is a class act and I am not sure I could have handled the one ounce defeat so well.He shed

his heart out for four solid days and left nothing on the table. On the nal day Swindle used a variety of baits

but his “go to lure” was a Lucky Craft Pointer 112 in a shad pattern. He kept his boat in 12- to 15-feet of water

and shed the bait with a jerk/jerk/stop rhythm in about 6-feet of water. He looked for indentation areas that

in Toledo Bend were in all stages of the spawn. As reports came in from the lake, there were some big bass be-

ing caught but it was still anyone’s tournament to win.Families were enjoying all of the activities sponsored by

the Sabine Parish Tourist Commission and the air was lled with excitement. As the pavilion area lled

with people anxious to see the nal weigh-in it was obvious that you don’t have to be in a large metropolitan

area to pack in the crowds when you have great fans like those in the Texas/Louisiana area.

Each of the 12 pros that shed Sunday were brought to the weigh-in stage in their boats to weigh their bags

of bass. At the end only Dean Rojas was left to knock Gerald Swindle out of the winners “hot seat”. Swindle had

weighed in 18-14 for a total of 70-14 and everyone knew that it was going to be close.Rojas placed his bass on

the scales and needed 13-8 to take the win. Unbelievably the scales stopped at 13-8 and Rojas had taken the

win by one ounce with a tournament total of 70-15. The crowd let out a massive roar and it was one of those

magic moments you will remember forever. It was a wire-to-wire win for Rojas, his second Bassmaster Elite Series win, his fourth Bassmaster career win

– and one of those previous wins was in 2001 on Toledo Bend.

It was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for Rojas as he took home $100,000, an automatic entry into

the 2012 Bassmaster Classic, and he also jumped 23 points in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year

points race.

Rojas had a simple plan for this event that involved chunking a topwater bait and sight-shing. His topwater

bait was a natural shad SPRO Hydro-Pop shed with Sunline monolament line along the edges of the grass.

All of his sight-shing was done with a Warmouth plastic bait that he designed for Big Bite Baits. The 3.5-inch

bait resembles a bluegill feeding on its side with its tail uttering and was rigged with a 3/16-ounce Tungsten

weight shed with 22-pound Sunline Shooter line. Rojas was keying on areas where shad were spawning in

had a drop in depth but the key was making sure that the wind was also blowing onto the spot.On the nal

day he culled about 10 bass and caught 40-50 keepers.

David Walker had a solid tournament and nished third with 70-2, Chris Lane nished fourth with 67-3

and Fred Roumbanis nished fth with 67-1.

My congratulations to all of the Pro Elite anglers and to B.A.S.S. ofcials for bringing such a prestigious

event to our Texas/Louisiana area. And a special congratulations to Linda-Curtis-Sparks, Director of the

Sabine Parish Tourist Commission, and all of her staff, the cooks that put together those wonderful meals for

the participants, security personnel and to the group of golf cart drivers that were there in the early morning

hours and late in the evening to assist folks in getting to all of the many activities and then back to their

vehicles. Complete standings can be found at Bassmaster.com

 AND THE WINNER IS…

ROBERT LAIRD OF LIVINGSTON, TEXAS

His rst day sh weighing 10.74 lbs outlasted all others over the 3 days.

As the third and nal day began you could feel the excitement and anticipa-

tion in the air building with over $500,000 in cash and prizes on the line. Spirits

were high as volunteers, vendors, sherman and an ever growing crowd waited

to see who would be crowned champion. Another cool morning did not deter the

sherman from starting early and weighing in during the rst hour. As in the past

two days the rst hour has shown the lowest weights to win the hourly cash prizes

by placing in the top 12.

Over 3,000 contestants came from 31 states and 3 countries, some as far as

Belize. “I would like to thank all of the service men and women in our military,

past and present, for affording us the freedoms we enjoy today. This tournament is

ofcially dedicated to them!”– Bob Sealy.

Casey Ashley started the nal ceremonies by singing the National Anthem.

Let’s look at what happened over the weekend.

Recap Day 1: Robert Laird had weighed his sh during the 9:00-10:00 hour

Friday, the rst day of the tournament. Taking an early lead, he had two and a half

long days to wait and see if anyone else caught one bigger. No stranger to catch-

ing big bass, Robert currently holds the lake record on Livingston for his 13.19

Sharelunker catch. So how did he do it on Sam Rayburn? On a Carolina rigged

watermelon red brush hog in 6’ of water. In the 1:00-2:00 hour the rst exact weight was brought in. 3.00 locked in on

the scales for Jerry Williams II of Silsbee,Texas to win $5,000.

Recap Day 2: Another double digit sow was brought in by Joe Kirbow of Congratulations to the top winners of the 2011 Sam Rayburn Big Bass Splash (Front) Robert Laird hoists the crowning trophy as

and collapsed, catching his breath there.“It’s the biggest sh I’ve ever

caught in my life!”The weight locked in at 10.36 lbs, winning $1,000

for that hour and ultimately winning 2nd place in the overall stand-

ings.

Two exact weight sh were brought in winning $5,000 each on Sat-

urday.Ricky Ware of Woodville, Texas brought in the rst one weighing

4.00 during the 8-9:00 hour, and Phil Sikes of College Station won the

second exact weight prize with his 3.00 lb catch. The overall top 5 drastically shufed with more big bass brought in.

Recap Day 3: Anglers were markedly tired after ghting high

winds and waves for days. Many healthy chunks were brought in to

win thousands of dollars, but no change to the top 5 leaderboard.Mark

Stevens of Youngsville, LA brought in the only exact weight bass at 3.00

lbs to win $5,000.

The overall top 5 standings did not change from day 2.Those anglers
