We need some answers

Lake Macquarie City Council has called on the new Minister for the Hunter, Gladys Berejik-lian to address the transport problems that have plagued the city for years.

Lake Macquarie Mayor, Jodie Harrison will request a meeting with Ms Berejiklian to discuss transport issues across the city, including the delivery of the Lake Macquarie transport interchange at Glendale and the connectivity of bus and train services in the western suburbs.

It also endorsed the formation of a state-funded Hunter Transport Authority to ensure local account-ability of transport management.

Putting forward the motion, Labor councillor Kay Fraser said the long-awaited regional transport plan for the Hunter, released on April 1, failed to address Lake Macquarie’s transport or traffic needs as a growing population and employment hub of the wider region.

“It also fails to identify problems including conges-tion, transit time or frequency and reliability of bus services in suburbs such as Belmont or Charles-town,” Cr Fraser said.

Cr Fraser also called on proceeds from the sale of the Port of Newcastle to be spent addressing trans-port issues in Lake Macquarie.

“The port is, what I believe to be, a regional asset,” she said.

“As Lake Macquarie City is a population core, it is vitally important for our residents to benefit from the lease.”

Cr Ken Paxinos (Liberal) agreed more needed to be done to synchronise bus and train timetables.

“I have residents tell me how they have to ride for an hour on buses and trains to get somewhere that’s 15 minutes down the road,” he said. “There needs to be an integrated transport plan for the whole lake that connects us with the rest of the world.”

Although she would not commit to meeting with representatives from Lake Macquarie City Council, Ms Berejiklian told the Post that she was committed to advocating for the Hunter region and through her role as Transport Minister, would continue to work with regional communities to address their specific transport concerns.

A tricky question - how do we best keep cyclists safe on our roads?A c ontroversial top ic h as r ecently r isen b ack to the surface of media coverage, unfortunately off the back of yet another death.

Last week, a m ale c yclist w as k illed at a bu sy intersection in the Sydney suburb of Neutral Bay after colliding with a bus.

On t he s ame d ay he re i n New castle, a c yclist was clipped by a car on a roundabout in Hamilton but luckily, was able to escape relatively lightly with a fractured ankle.

NSW Ro ads M inister D uncan G ay, sp eaking to Sydney’s Radio 2UE, said he was seriously considering in troducing a li cencing s ystem f or cyclists to reduce the number of rider deaths.

Personally, I t hink l icences w ould b e a g ood idea - as long as they are inexpensive.

As far as I’m concerned, if you are riding on the roads a nd p articipating t raffic, y ou shou ld b e subject to the laws of the roads.

As Mr Gay said on radio, this is not going to greatly worry the majority of cyclists who follow the r ules. We’re t alking a bout a sm all m inority who don’t do the right thing.

Being s uch a c ontroversial t opic, M r G ay w as surely e xpecting c riticism o ver h is c omments, and was at pains to make it clear that it was a very small number of cyclists who do the wrong thing - “probably under one per cent”.

I’m not, however, in favour of the idea of regis-tration fees for bicycles, which has been f loated by others in the past.

We need to keep cycling as an affordable means of transport.

People a lready f ind e nough e xcuses not t o exercise without pricing them out of a bike.

Bicycle NSW, a cycling advocacy group, spoke up about their support for a c ampaign called “A Metre Matters”, which aims to have laws passed requiring vehicles to s tay a minimum di stance of one met re f rom a c yclist whe n p assing i n a speed zone of 60 kilometres an hour or less and 1.5 metres in zones above 60 kilometres an hour.

I’ve g ot no proble m w ith t hose l aws c oming in, bu t s urely t hey a re a lmost c ommon s ense anyway!

When I’m d riving, I c ertainly don’t want to be getting any closer than a metre to a cyclist.

It’s common sense that being in a bigger vehicle would mean you are more cautious.

Mr G ay a lso s aid he w as c onsidering b anning cyclists from some of the busier roadways.

I a gree w ith t his f or t he s ake of ev eryone’s safety and to keep traffic moving in peak hour.

I’ve nev er c ycled on m ajor ro ads, bu t I’ d b e constantly worried a bout whet her every bu s or truck coming up behind me is going to see me.

Unless it’s the only thoroughfare in a particular area, c yclists s hould ide ally b e d irected o nto minor, safer roads.

This a lready h appens t o s ome e xtent w ith signs pointing cyclists towards the best route but surely more can be done to improve safety.

I think licences would be a good idea

T he leasing of the Port of Newcas-tle may have generated $1.75 billion to be invested in State infrastructure, but uncertainty

remains over whether Newcastle will see a fair share of the funds.

NSW Premier, Mike Baird and Treasurer, Andrew Constance last week announced the port would be leased to a consortium for $1.75 billion, $1 billion above the expected lease price, which has led some to ask why Newcastle will pocket just $340 million from the lease of one of the city’s most valuable assets. Newcastle Lord Mayor, Jeff McCloy said Newcastle should receive half of the proceeds.

“When the NSW Government announced it planned to lease the Port of Newcastle, it projected a lease value of around $700 million and committed to channeling $340 million - roughly half the full amount - to Newcastle upon leasing,” he said. “With the actual lease amount announced by [the] NSW Government, more than a billion dollars above the projection, [I] expect the NSW Government to provide the same propor-tional amount - that is roughly half - of the $1.75 billion to Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.

“Our coal royalties, port revenue, power and water utilities revenue were taken up by a succession of NSW state governments over decades, largely for expenditure in Sydney, without a fair and proportionate return to the Hunter.”

Federal Member for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon also called on the State Govern-ment to honour its commitment the original funding rate of nearly 50 per cent, calling the distribution of funds “disgraceful”.

“This announcement is an insult to Newcastle,’ she said. “I don’t think any Novocastrian would believe that send-ing 80 per cent of our port’s profits to Sydney is either smart or fair.”

Newcastle Councillor Tim Crakan-thorp, who is currently vying for pre-selection as the Labor Party’s candidate

for Newcastle in the 2015 State election, said the city needed a larger share of the proceeds for investment in local infrastructure projects like flood miti-gation in Wallsend, a major parking station at Honeysuckle and finding a solution to the traffic problems caused by the Adamstown railway gates.

“As the State Government looks to reap not just $700 million, but a staggering $1.75 billion, it is time for the State Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen to say this money is Newcastle and the Hunter’s money, let’s spend it on Newcastle and the Hunter,” he said.

Mr Owen said he would continue to lobby his Parliamentary colleagues to ensure Newcastle received funding for “sorely needed projects” but did not comment specifically on calls for the Hunter to receive more from the lease of the region’s port.

Mr Baird maintained that the commit-ment of $340 million, to be spent on the revitalisation of the CBD, from the lease of the port was a positive result for Newcastle and did not rule out more investment in the region in the future.

Putting f orward t he mot ion, C r B arney Langford highlighted the need for central-ised youth mental health services.

Man faces court overEdgeworth robbery

A man will face court following an alleged robbery in Edgeworth on Saturday morning.

About 4.10am, a 19-year-old man entered a convenience store on Main Road and asked a 26-year-old male attendant for cigarettes.

The younger man allegedly refused to pay, and then also demanded money.

The attendant raised an alarm and police were called.

The 19-year-old was arrested at the scene and taken to Lake Macquarie Police Station, where he was charged with robbery.

He was refused bail, to appear at Toronto Local Court today (Wednesday, 14 May).

Missing man found alive inTomago bushland

Police have located a man who was reported missing from his home at Tomago late last month.

65-year-old, Lloyd Blows was last seen about 1.30pm on Saturday 26 April.

It is believed he had left his home at a local caravan park, after having trouble sleeping, to find somewhere else to sleep.

After being provided with information from a member of the public, police were able to locate Mr Blows on Sunday in bushland at Tomago.

He was conveyed to hospital by Ambulance Paramedics suffering from dehydration and hypothermia.

Police from Port Stephens Local Area Command have thanked the public and media for their assistance with this search.

Newcastle i s a t a c ritical p oint i n i ts t ransformation, w ith increased i nvestment a nd dev elopment a nd m any u rban renewal projects underway.

The city is poised to become truly world-class with a diverse range of residential, business and services options and a CBD with more growth and activity than we’ve seen for decades.

Within this context, Council has drafted a four-year delivery program a nd y early op erational pl an t o g uide proje cts a nd services for the 2014/15 financial year.

Council is right behind revitalisation, taking steps to stimu-late business, create jobs and become a business and cultural centre for NSW.

We will also maintain our focus on productivity, cost control and financial sustainability.

Now, we need to hear from you. The draft plans and budget will be on public exhibition from 7 May to 4 June 2014.

Community information sessions are scheduled for Wednes-day 28 May, 2:30pm to 4:30pm at Wallsend Library, and Thurs-day 29 May, 6pm to 8pm at Newcastle City Hall.

Please join me, GM Ken Gouldthorp and Council staff to learn more and ask questions.

Council has made tough decisions to reduce costs; however we will be talking to the community in the coming months about a sp ecial rate variation of up to 3.6% per annum above the rate cap.

This w ould b e f or a f ive-year p eriod s tarting i n 20 15/16 i f approved.

Progress toward financial sustainability has been significant over the past 12 months.

Your support for the yearly plan means we can continue to move forward together.

It is a privilege to be part of the renewal process for this great city.

The vast majority of u s know someone who h as been touched by a mental health problem, or have experienced our own mental health issues at some stage of life.

Statistics show that in Australia, 14 per cent of 12 to 17 year olds and 27 per cent of 18 to 25 year olds experience mental health problems each year, but only one in four young people experienc-ing these problems actually receives professional help.

As a n ation w e a re b ecoming more s tressed, a nd a survey last year highlighted just how dramatic this trend is.

Undertaken by the Australian Psychological Society, the s tudy sho wed t hat i n 20 13, Au stralians rep orted significantly lower levels of wellbeing and significantly higher levels of stress and distress than in 2012 and 2011.

In f act, al most thr ee-quarters o f A ustralians ( 73%) reported t hat s tress w as h aving a t le ast s ome i mpact with almost one i n five (17%) reporting that stress was having a strong to very strong impact on their physical health. The level of s tress is increasingly affecting out mental health and the study found as a nation last year we reported significantly higher levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms than in the previous two years:

• 14% of Australians reported depressive symptoms in the severe to extremely severe range.

• 12% of Australians reported anxiety symptoms in the severe to extremely severe range.

• Y ounger ad ults c ontinued t o rep ort s ignificantly higher l evels o f d epressive an d anxi ety s ymptoms compared with older Australians.

• Unemployed Australians and students (18+) reported the highest level of depressive and anxiety symptoms.

While m any o f th e p roposals w ill im pact in dividuals and families nationwide, one particular proposal deeply disturbs me: the speculated scrapping of Medicare Local.

Here i n t he H unter, M edicare L ocal h as b een a h uge success offering local medical services targeted at those who would otherwise ‘fall through the gaps’ such as the young, the aged, the disabled and the homeless.

Services range from after-hours GP ac cess and mental health c linics t o c hronic d isease m anagement. T hese services ultimately present a saving to the Australian tax payer preventing hospitalisations. In particular Hunter Medicare Local’s work as the lead agency of Headspace Newcastle needs applause. While mental illness remains the le ading c ause of de ath f or y oung Au stralians, i t i s critical t he Government continues to support effective support services targeted directly at young people. Australia boasts some of t he world’s best health condi-tions thanks to universal health care and programs such as Medicare Local. Aging is a normal process for every human being but it’s not necessarily a wanted one. There are plenty of products claim-ing to help reverse aging but none do much, if anything at all to really slow the process, so this study migh t be interesting to a lot of people...

A University of C alifornia study sa ys it has found the first evidence e xercise, diet and medi tation has an inc redible effect on agin g. The researchers sa y going on a health kick reverses aging, even at the cellular lev el. The study look ed at 35 men w ith prosta te c ancer. Those who chan ged their lifestyle had demonstrably younger cells in genetic terms.

The researchers saw visible cellular changes in the group of 10 men who sw itched to a healthy diet and stuck to a recom-mended timetable of e xercise and stress-bustin g meditation and yoga. The changes related to protective caps at the end of our chromosomes, called telomeres. Their role is to safeguard the end of the chromosome and to prevent the loss of genetic information during cell division. As we age and our cells divide, our telomeres get shorter – their structural integrity weakens, which can tell cells to stop dividing and die. Researchers have been questioning whether this process might be inevitable or something that could be halted or even reversed.

Prof Dean Ornish and colleagues measured telomere length at the beginnin g of their study and again after fi ve y ears. Among the 10 men w ith low-risk prostate cancer who made comprehensive lifestyle chan ges, telomere length increased significantly b y an a verage of 10 per cen t. In comparison, telomere len gth dec reased b y an a verage of three per cen t in the remainin g 25 men who did not mak e an y lifestyle changes.

“But past work has shown that people who lead a sedentary lifestyle can experience accelerated cellular aging in the form of more rapid shortening of their telomeres,” he said.

“Comprehensive lifestyle changes may significantly reduce the risk of a w ide variety of diseases including heart disease, and a variety of cancers and premature mortality.”

A FEATURE OF ROUND 8 of the Newcastle District No.1 Grade Saturday Pennants Competition was that three of the four Section leaders enjoyed success. Section 1 leaders Alder Park (42 points) scored a hard fought 57/51 victory over second placed Nelson Bay (34). The triumphant skippers being Shannon Rowe and Gavin Kelly. Rowe beat New Zealand international Richard Girvan 22/17 and Kelly downed Kevin Robinson 19/14. Gittoes scored a point for the Bay defeating Martin Ball 20/16.

Section 2 leaders Soldiers Point (36.5) whitewashed Charlestown (8) 90/37 winning convincingly on all three rinks. Daniel Hill recorded the biggest win 32/12 over Shane Brodbeck, Jason Pietraszek accounted for Ian Barrett 31/13 and NSW representative Terry Antram downed Fred Verschoor 27/12. Beresfield (32.5) kept in touch with the leaders with a solid 64/54 win over defending titlehold-ers Valentine (24.5). Valentine’s chances of qualifying for the semi-finals now appear remote.

Section 3 leaders Raymond Terrace

No.1 (43) struggled to overcome Wallsend 65/46. Jason Stokes 31/15 victory over Ken Baldock proving the difference between the two sides. Australian repre-sentative Matthew Baus edged out Garry Baker 19/18 and Lennon Scott and Mick Lewis had a 15 all draw.

Raymond Terrace No.2 (21.5) caused the upset of the weekend whitewashing Section 4 leaders Kahibah (30.5) 75/52. Phillip Brown lead the way defeating Howard Smith 29/18, Gary Randall beat Tony Falcocchio 26/15 and Tony Randall downed Jarrod Gorsuch by the odd shot 20/19. Edgeworth (27.5) moved into second place with a narrow 61/59 victory over Water Board (15.5).

NEWCASTLE’S SURF CLUBS CONTINUE TO be a breeding ground for emerging talent and Cooks Hill Surf Club junior lifesaver, Isabella Ferencz is the latest success story.

The U14s junior lifesaver recently took out the prestigious NSW Junior Lifesaver of the Year Award, after showing her skills at a week-long development camp in Sydney during the school holidays.

Finalists from across NSW competed in a wide range of challenging team-based activates at the camp that tested the young lifesavers’ leadership and commu-nication skills, with Cooks Hills own coming out on top.

Miss Ferencz said the experience was unforgettable. “I’m so happy to receive this award,” she said.

“I met so many people from around the state and it was such an amazing learning experience.

“In 2011, I won an award through my club and it spurred me on to go on with surf life-saving and really achieve something.”

As well as celebrating Miss Ferencz’s win, Cooks Hill Surf Club has also enjoyed success at the Australia Surf Lifesaving Championship at Scarborough Beach in Western Australia last month, with Hamish Lorong picking up third in the beach sprint

event and Liam Hall-Muir making the semi-finals in the flags event.

Long-standing Cooks Hill Surf Club member Mitchell Hermens was also recently selected as one of just two lifesavers from NSW to attend a leadership exchange in New Zealand, where he took part in an extreme rescue training course, learning skills like large swell body retrieval.

K nights fi ve-eighth J arrod M ullen may ha ve edg ed sligh tly ahead in the ba ttle for the NS W No .6 jersey after starring for Country in the 26-all

draw with City in Dubbo on Sunday.Mullen’s first half 40-20 and a pinpoint cross-

field kick that led to a try for Jamal Idris, would have been e xactly the type of “ Origin-style” plays Blues coach L aurie Daley w ould ha ve been looking for.

The frenetic finish to the ma tch, which sa w City score three tries in the final four minutes, slightly o vershadowed the ba ttle betw een Mullen and City’s Josh Reynolds.

Mullen’s halves partner T yrone Roberts was his usual busy self and certainly didn’t look out of place in representative company.

to work on this current batch of songs and we’ve basically been tinkering away on it ever since.”

While the Dennis Boys’ raison d’etre has always been country (but tempered with a refreshingly modern edge devoid of the trappings of US FM country rock and helped along by guitarist Lyle Dennis’ face melting fretwork), this time around, the band have delved into much deeper sonic territory, with even more flourishes of punk, reggae and rock and roll.

“Lyle and I produced the album and, this time around, because we were more used to working in a studio, I’d say we were much more experimental, looking at different sounds and arrangements which have made for a much fuller album, I think,” he said.

You might think that four years is a relatively long time between drinks when it comes to albums,

While their debut long player No Story To Tell was released in 2010, the boys have been working on its follow-up, basi-cally ever since. Now the fruits of those labours, Up All Night, is set to be launched at the Lass this weekend and bass player Erle Dennis told TE that the excitement was palpable.

“Yeah it’s definitely very exciting to be finally releasing the album,” he said.

“After we finished recording No Story to Tell, we pretty much went straight back into the studio [Sydney’s Glebe Studios]

The boys are back in town

what they do best - wowing Newcastle audiences with their amorphous thump-ing country sound.

“At the Lass show, we’ll be playing the album in its entirety, which is a bit of a challenge in itself, and we’ll have a few guests there on the night who whelped

out on the record, so it should be a good night.”

Catch the Dennis Boys when they launch Up All Night at the Lass O’Gowrie on Friday, May 9 alongside Newcastle’s resident pop humourists The Main Guy and the Other Guys.
