We support our students with
setting goals for themselves as
learners and as individuals in
our community. We encourage
parents to work with us to set
high academic and social expec-
tations for your children and to
model attitudes and behaviours
that are conducive to develop-
ing respectful citizens of our
society. Please review the in-
formation in the Student
Agenda as well as the Boards’s
Guide to the School Year and
L.W.P.S. Start Up Package. We
thank you for supporting us in
implementing the rules and
procedures and for showing
your children that you believe
in them and value education.

Welcome back to another

With the help of the LWPS
School Council, arrange-
ments have been made to
have all students checked for
lice by a registered nurse.
Student are checked thor-
oughly after vacation periods,
(summer, winter, and March
break). We look forward to all par-
ents supporting this initiative
by treating their children if
necessary, and by continuing
to check their child’s head on
a consistent basis. The Lice
Checkers are coming on
September 22nd.
Students who are assigned a
locker for the storage of per-
sonal belonging (outdoor ap-
parel, boots, change of shoes,
gym clothes, lunch, school ma-
terial) are expected to maintain
this space in an organized, clean
manner. If a lock is permitted
by the teacher it should be a
Dudley combination lock. The school does
not provide
locks.
All student in grades 1—6 will
be provided a student agenda
planner to assist with home-
work completion, tracking
assignments parent/teacher
communication and activities.
The agenda also contains im-
portant school and board infor-
mation. The agenda will be
provided FREE of charge. Grade 7 & 8 students will re-
ceive a hard copy of the agenda
insert pages. Intermediate
teachers will share alternative
strategies for tracking home-
work tasks.
A couple of other things to
remind students about. We
have a beautiful school and we
want to keep it that way so we
are reminding every student
that you need both indoor and
outdoor shoes, Also remember that there is a
cooler outside of the main
doors where parents are asked
to leave labeled lunches. The
coolers will be moved inside at
lunch and students
can pick up their
lunches then.
Lice Checkers are coming..

Search and Seizure Reminder to Parents
Protocol between the York Region Police and York Region District
School Board mandates that school administrators remind parents of the
search and seizure policy at the commencement of the school year. The
Police Protocol states that “the school community needs to be made
aware of the right of the school administrators to search school prop-
erty, such as lockers and desks, without notice to or permission of any
person. School administrators shall also make the school community
aware that police may from time to time be invited onto school premises
to conduct their own searches. These searches may be conducted with-
out notice to or permission of any member of the school community
other than the school principal.”
In order to prevent physical injury and because of our concern for student
safety, students at Lake Wilcox P.S. are expected to avoid activities that
involve aggressive play and touching. Activities that are not acceptable
include wrestling, piggy-backing, tripping, pushing, shoving, body-checking,
poking, punching, and other forms of play in stairwells, hallways and play-
grounds. During recess breaks, students are able to play organized games
such as, basketball, soccer and foot hockey ,as well as activities such as
skipping and tag.
Physical Contact at School
Promoting Success for Students of First Nation, Metis and Inuit Ancestry
The York Region District
School Board provides an op-
portunity for students with First Nation, Métis and Inuit
ancestry to self-identify. The
process is voluntary and the
information gathered will be
kept confidential.
The self-identification process
is the first step in providing:
Culturally specific learning
opportunities or activities;
Additional support for aca-
demic achievement and
well-being, including desig-
nated support staff;
Communication between
schools, First Nation,
Métis and Inuit Education
staff, Aboriginal students
and their families;
Connections to post-
secondary institutions,
community groups, ser-
vice providers and other
partners;
More learning opportunities
for all members of the
school community to
develop a greater under-
standing of Aboriginal
perspectives, cultures and
histories.
New students can self-identify
when they register with the
Board. Current students can
complete an Aboriginal Self-
Identification Form which can
be obtained from their school.
For further information,
please see the Information
for Parents and Students
with First Nation, Métis
and Inuit Ancestry bro-
chure available from the
school or speak with the
school principal.
No Peanuts, Tree-nuts or Nut by-products at Lake Wilcox
School staff, students and parents are responsible for creating a safe and healthy environment for all of our students. This is an additional challenge for schools attended by children with life threatening to nuts and other allergens. If they smell or come into contact with these foods, they may have an anaphylactic reac-tion. These life threatening allergies include peanuts and nuts (such as almonds, cashews, hazelnut, and walnuts). Some other common anaphylactic allergens include dairy products, eggs, fish, wheat, shellfish and insect stings. While it is impossible to create a risk-free environment, together we can take important steps to minimize potentially fatal allergic reactions. We ask all students not to bring nut or nut products to school. We strongly encourage parents to avoid the use of substitute peanut butter products. Also, please avoid chocolate spreads that are made with hazelnuts. No sharing of food or eating utensils is allowed. The children at risk may also be made aware, on a regular basis, that they should not take any food other than what has been sent by a parent or guardian. If your child has a severe allergy, please contact the office staff to let them know. You will be required to fill out a medical care plan and provide the school with two Epi-pens. In keeping with this policy, please do not send baked goods or products con-taining nuts to school with your child to celebrate his or her birthday. Please ensure that any food sent in is clearly marked with the no-peanut symbol. Timbits or donuts cannot be distributed to students as these products do not guarantee that they have not come in contact with nuts. An alternative to food would be to send in a pencil or any loot bag type object to share with classmates.
An “Allergy Safe” environment can only be achieved when everyone is committed. Your cooperation is appreciated.
The new design of our school
parking lot and student drop
off area has been working really
well. The wide concrete path-
ways enable families to travel
safely to and from the school
and the addition of a new exit
for cars has improved the flow
of traffic in and out of the park-
ing lot. We will still be moni-toring the use of this new de-
sign and will adjust procedures
if needed. we ask that families
kindly adhere to the following
procedures:
1. Vehicles should use the
new drop off lane to let
out passengers.
2. No vehicles should be left
parked or standing any-
where in the parking lot
loop.
3. Parking spaces should be
left accessible to staff and
parent volunteers.
4. The new parking spaces
closest to the school are
reserved for handicapped
persons and visitors.
5. No vehicles should block
or enter the bus loop.
Staff members will be on duty
during morning entry and dis-
missal times to provide direc-
tion and to monitor vehicle
movement. Student safety is
our top priority! Thank you
for helping us to develop safe
and efficient
practices.
The York Region District
School Boards welcomes vol-
unteers in our schools.
To become a volunteer please
provide a current Police Check
or sign an Offence Declaration
form if you have provided a
police check within the last 12
months. For more details or
to provide this form please see

Lockdown and Fire Drills
Every year we have six practice
fire drills. All publicly funded
schools in Ontario are committed
to providing and maintaining a safe
school environment.
As part of safe schools we will
also be conducting a “Hold and
Secure” and “Lock Down” drill.
These will help prevent injury and
eliminate fears and concerns.
Lets keep our
children safe!
Remember to
follow the

2015-2016 Staff List and Phone Extensions At L.W.P.S. we like to encourage communication between parents/guardians and their child’s teachers. Each month we send home a
newsletter from the school and most teachers also send home classroom updates. Agendas are used to communicate homework and
short notes; however if you have any questions or concerns please call the teacher and leave a message in their mail box. The will return
your call as soon as they are able.

MORNING ENTRY PROCEDURES AT LAKE WILCOX PS
At Lake Wilcox Public School we use a FREE ENTRY process for students before the start of the
school day. Below is a description of how this process works:
Students are only allowed to enter the school at 7:50 am. This is when we have formal
supervision by staff available for them. Students are not allowed in the school before 7:50 am
unless for special reasons. All supervision begins at 7:50 am so it is important that students do not arrive prior to this
time.
Students are to enter the school via the closest exit to their locker, hook, or classroom.
For safety reason, the only available entrance points are:
-the junior doors (south doors near the portable)
-the main parking lot doors (in front of the office) -the main doors (at the bus loop) *HOWEVER these doors are only to be used by
bus/taxi students in order to keep all non-bus students safe and away from vehicles Parents/guardians are not permitted to escort their children into the school when entering the junior
doors. Parents escorting children into the school via the front parking lot doors cannot proceed
past the Welcome sign just past the office. *We encourage all parents/guardians to allow their
children to enter the school alone in order to minimize congestion and encourage independ-
ence. Students in grades 1-8 are not permitted to walk down the kindergarten hallway due to the high
number of kindergarten students we have enrolled. Portable students are to enter their classroom at 7:50 am. Again, there will not be any supervi-
sion for these students in the yard before 7:50 am.

Lake Wilcox Touchstone
Last year, our staff collaborated with each other and
our students and community members to discover and
analyze what we believe in and value. Out of this, our
school touchstone was developed and presented to our
students and community last June. We are proud to
continue utilizing this touchstone this year and plan on
incorporating it in the everyday fabric of our school. As
the year progresses we will keep our school community
updated on how we use the touchstone and how it is
enriching our school culture.
