VISITORGIBSON/MARTELLI (IGLOO)VISITOR is a newly commissionedinstallation by artists Ruth Gibson and Bruno Martelli (igloo).

Inspired by the artists’ travels to thesnow-driven mountains of the CanadianRockies, VISITOR was developedfollowing research at The Banff ArtsCentre. The exhibition plays withapprehensions of different forms ofreality, bringing exterior virtual spaceinto the physical space of the gallery byemploying techniques used in videogames.

Comprised of two works - where thebears are sleeping and Vermilion Lake -VISITOR portrays visions of mountainlandscapes inviting the viewer toexperience a sense of wonder amidst thefrozen lakes and forests. It is aninvestigation into the experience of place, figure and landscape, where real andinvented panoramas depict the beautyand strangeness of the natural world. And within this world we become awareof a presence which could be a friendly ormalevolent force, suggesting the hunterbeing hunted, the tracker being tracked.

Gibson and Martelli work together as igloocreating ambiguous topographies andrelationships between the natural and theartificial. Re-purposing media tools andcombining them with re-modelled objects, prints and interrupted surfaces, theysimulate and reconfigure representations of the world.

The artists’ installations, video works, onlineprojects and performances have featuredin international exhibitions and festivalsincluding the 52nd Venice Biennale.

VISITOR is a touring exhibition produced in association withartsdepot. Commissioned by The Henry Moore Foundation andArts Council England. Supported by The Banff Centre, Canada.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCEKASHIF NADIMCHAUDRYKashif Nadim Chaudry became thefourth artist-in-residence at Lakeside ArtsCentre in November 2010, and will beworking in the studio for a 12-monthperiod producing a new body of work tobe shown in a major exhibition in theDjanogly Art Gallery in Autumn 2011.

With a family background in tailoring,Nadim studied textiles at Goldsmith’sCollege, London. His current practice isconcerned with a search for the idea ofthe ‘sacred’ and all its entrapments.Playing with the traditions and ceremoniesof his Pakistani Muslim heritage, as wellas investigating a further marginalisedidentity as a British born gay man, Nadim’swork raises questions around adornment, sexuality and the performances ofreligious and cultural ritual.

We welcome enquiries fromschools/colleges or other groupsinterested in making a studio visit tomeet Nadim, and perhaps combiningthis with an arts based activity atLakeside. By appointment only, pleasebook by contacting Ruth Lewis-Jones,Learning Officer (Galleries) on 0115 8232218.

FRIDAY 22 APRIL - SUNDAY 14 AUGUSTADMISSION FREE

HOME AND ABROAD MAPS FROM THE HISTORIC COLLECTIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAMMaps provide a fascinating point of entryto different cultures and different times.Though their function was often practical, demonstrating ownership and landmanagement, they can also be works ofbeauty and imagination.

Scattered through the archives and rarebook collections at the University ofNottingham are many examples ofmaps, from the sixteenth to the twentiethcentury. While each item tells its ownstory of creation and use, the narrative ofthe display concerns the people of theMidlands, their knowledge of thephysical world and the significance ofmaps in their lives. The common themeis often one of property and power, butitems also illustrate the development ofcommunities in a rural landscape andthe pace of urban growth. At aninternational level we see politicalaspirations and British perceptions offoreign lands.

This display looks back from our currentfamiliarity with satellite navigation anddigital mapping to celebrate an age ofphysical maps, in exhibits ranging fromthe simplicity of a few sketched lines andscribbled names to sophisticatedexamples of cartographic publication.

OLEANNA is often referred to as PulitzerPrize winner David Mamet’s mostcontroversial drama. Electrifying dialogueand blazing emotion create a riveting playin which a college professor and hisfemale student become embroiled in a warof words that takes a dangerous turn.

“Mamet continues his exploration of male-femaleconflicts. John & Carol go to it with hand to handcombat that amounts to a primal struggle forpower. The vehicle for that combat is crackling, highly distilled dialogue unencumbered by literaryfrills or phony theatrical ones” Frank Rich, International Herald Tribune
