Curriculum and Instruction

Lesson Planning Core AllcoresubjectswilluseMasterTeacherAcademy(MTA)lessonplans,locatedontheMTAwebsiteathttp://www.houstonisd.org/mta.SubjectAreaTeams(SAT)aretoreviewlessonplanscollaborativelyduringthedesignatedSATPlanningMeetingspriortoimplementation.Allteachersteachingthesamecoursewillusethesamelessonplans.

Core-support Allcore‐supportteacherswillusetheCoreSupportLessonPlantemplate.LessonplanswillbepostedweeklytotheappropriateSATfolderonthecommondrive.Allteachersteachingthesamecoursewillusethesamelessonplans.

Instructional Expectations Begininstructionimmediatelywhenclassbeginsandusetimeproductively

throughouttheentireninety‐minuteperiod. GradestudentworkandpostgradesinGradeSpeedwithinoneweekofthe

assignmentduedate. SupportandcooperatewiththemembersofyourSATandthegeneralfaculty. Beavailabletostudentsforindividualacademicassistance.

Assessment Policy LamarHighSchoolassessmentpoliciesaretobefollowedatalltimesineverycourse.TeacherswilladheretotheprescribedgradingsystemandassessmentpoliciesasestablishedbyLamarHighSchoolandHISD.

Grades ItisHISDpolicytohaveatleast2gradesperweekwithinagradingcycle.Thechartbelowreflectstheseminimumrequirementstakingintoaccountactualinstructionaldays:

AllassessmentatLamarHighSchooliscriterion‐related,utilizinga“best‐fit”approachwithsubject‐specificrubrics.Inaddition:

RubricsusedwillcomefromtheappropriateIBMYPorIBDPsubjectguidesandmodifiedbySATssothattheyaretask‐specificandage‐appropriate.

Rubricsmustbeprovidedtostudentsbeforetheassessmentisgiven. Studentsmusthavetheopportunitytoself‐assessusingtherubrics. PercentagegradesmustbedeterminedusingtheappropriateIBMYPorIBDP

conversioncharts. Percentagegradesandrubricgradesmustbothbereportedbacktostudents.

Everycriterionmustbeassessedatleastoncepercycle.SATswilldeterminehowmanytimeseachcriterionisassessedandrecordedinthegradebook.Theexpectationisthatabalanceofcriteriawillbeachievedthroughoutthegradingcycle.

Rubricsshouldbechosenbasedonthenatureoftheassignment.Carefulattentionshouldbepaidtowhichcriteriaareassessedforeachassignmentsothatassignmentsarenotdisproportionatelyweightedinthegradebook.

Anyandallcriteriausedonanassessmenttaskmustbeconnectedtothetaskinameaningfulway(i.e.,donotusethe“KnowledgeandUnderstanding”criteriaonavocabularyquizunlessitcanjustifiablybeassessedusingtheassociatedgradingrubric).

Gradebooks TeachersmustestablishandmaintainacomputerizedgradebookusingGradeSpeed.

Teachersmustupdategradebooksonadailybasis.

Allgradingcategoriesandtheircorrespondingweightsmustadheretothoseadoptedbytheschoolforthecurrentyear.

Allteachersteachingthesamecoursemusthavesynchronizedgradebooks.Thisincludes:

Gradebookcategorysetup,aspublishedbytheDeanofInstruction’soffice Assignment/taskcontent Gradebookassignment/taskname(meaningful)andassociatedgradingcategory

TeachersmustpresentaprintedcopyoftheGradeSpeedgradebooktotheRegistrarattheendofthefallsemesterandagainattheendofthespringsemester.Thisgradebookmustcontaintheindividualassignmentsandgradesforeachstudentforeachmarkingperiod.

SATleadersand/oradministratorsmayaskforprintedcopiesofteachers’gradebooksatanytimetoensuresynchronizationandcompliancewithassessmentpolicies.

Studentsareprohibitedfromaccessingateacher’sgradebook.StudentsareprohibitedfromaccessingthecomputerwhiletheteacherisloggedintoGradeSpeedorEmail.

GradechangesmayonlybecompletedwiththeapprovalofthePrincipalorDeanofInstruction.Gradechangesmaybeprocessediftherewasanerrorinthecomputationofthestudent'sgrade,anerrorwasmadeenteringgradesintotheteacher’sgradebook,ortoremoveanIncomplete.TheGradeChangeformisavailableinthemainofficefromthesecretariesofthePrincipalandDeanofInstruction.Theformmustbefilledoutcompletelypriortosubmittingforapproval.

Allincompletegradesmustbechangedtoanumericgradebeforetheendofthenextgradingcycle.IfanIncompleteisnotmade‐up,thentheincompletegrademustbechangedtotheactualnumericgradethestudenthasearned.AGradeChangeformmustbesubmittedfortheIncompletetoberemoved.Teachersmaynotgiveincompletegradesduringthelastgradingcycleofasemester(cycles3and6).

Itistheteacher’sresponsibilitytocommunicatewithstudentsandparentswhenanIncompleteisissuedforagradingcycle.Itisalsotheteacher’sresponsibilitytoensurethattheIncompleteischangedtoanumericgradebeforetheendofthenextgradingcycle.

Late Work Policy Teachersmustacceptlateworkwithinthegradingcycleinwhichitwasassignedwithnomorethana20percentpenaltydeduction.

Inaccordancewithdistrictpolicy,afteracyclegradehasbeenrecorded,noadditionalclassworkmaybeacceptedtoimproveastudent'sgrade.Ifworkassignedduringthecyclewasnotcompleted,thestudentshouldreceivean"INC,"andthegradechangedwhentheworkiscompletedwithintherequiredtimeframe.

Make-up Work Astudentwillbegiventheopportunitytomakeupworkorquizzes/testsmissedduetoanexcusedabsence,includingabsencesforschoolactivities.Itistheresponsibilityofthestudenttorequestandcompleteanyassignmentsorquizzes/testsmissed.

Re-teach Tutorials Studentswillhavetheopportunityforre‐teachandreworkofpreviouslygradeddailyassignmentswhichresultinagradeof50–75.Thepurposeofthisprogramistoprovideeachstudenttheopportunitytoincreasetheirmasteryofspecificrequiredskillsandconcepts.Thefollowingcircumstancesapply:

Student Eligibility Process Assignmentsmusthavebeenoriginallyturnedinontimewithagradeof50–75. Nolateassignmentswillbeconsideredunderthispolicy. Tests,quizzes,formal/informalpapers,orlong‐termprojectsformajorgradesdo

notqualify. Toqualifyforresubmission,assignmentsmustbecompletedinafterschool

tutorials,inthelibrary,andundertutorialteacheroversightandguidance. Qualifyingassignmentsmustbereworkedwithinthreeweeksoftheoriginaldue

dateinGradeSpeed/PSConnect. Noassignmentsmaybereworkedwithinthreedaysoftheendofeachgrading

period.

Teacher Process and Responsibility LibrarytutorialteacherswillcheckPSConnectfortheeligibilityofanassignment. Allassignmentsmustbepostedonitslearningandaccessibletothestudent;

assignmentswillbedownloadedinthelibrary.

TheduedateinGradeSpeedmustreflectthedatetheassignmentwasdue. Assignmentswillbecompletedonlyduringtutorialsessionsandunderthe

supervisionofthetutorialteacherandthetutorialadministrator/supervisor. Completedassignmentswillbescannedbythetutorialteacherandemailedtothe

classroomteachertobegraded. Teachersmustgradetheresubmittedassignmentandadjustthestudent’sgrade

withinthreedaysofresubmissionandrecordthenewgradeinGradeSpeed. Latepenaltiesmaynotbedeductedfromanyoftheseresubmittedassignments. Thegradeonthere‐taughtassignmentwillreplacetheoriginalgrade.

Final Exams Teacherswilladministerafinalexamineveryclasstheyteach.Thefinalexamshouldreflectmaterialcoveredduringthesemester.Finalexamsrepresent25%ofastudent’ssemestergrade.Allfinalexamperiodsaretwohourslong,soteachersshouldplanaccordingly.Studentsarenottobereleasedfromanexamperiodearly.Allstudentsmusttaketheirfinalexamsonthedaysdesignatedforfinalexamsunlessprincipalapprovalisobtainedinadvance.

Wheretwoormoreteachersareinstructingthesamecourse,thefinalexammustbethesame.AllfallandspringsemesterexamswillbesubmittedelectronicallytotheDeanofInstruction.FinalexamproceduresaredisseminatedinadvancebytheDeanofInstructionandmustbefollowedwithoutexception.

Technology in the Classroom Videos and Films AllvideomaterialmustbeapprovedbytheSATforusewiththecommonlessondesignforwhichthereisacorrelationbetweenthecontentofthevideoandthestudentexpectation(s)beingtaught.Thecorrelationmustbedocumentedinthelessonplan.TeachersmayuseonlyG‐ratedvideos.

Cell Phone Usage Teachersmayusecellphonesonlyduringnon‐instructionaltime.Pleasekeepyourphoneonvibrateasyouareexpectedtohonorinstructionaltimeaswellasprofessionaldevelopmenttime.

Studentcellphonescanbeusedforinstructionalpurposeswhileintheclassroomifapprovedbytheteacher.Allotheruseofcellphonesintheclassroomisnotpermitted.Thesameappliestoallotherelectronicdevices.

Professional Expectations

Professional Development ProfessionaldevelopmentisheldoncampusthroughSubjectAreaTeam(SAT)meetingsandInterdisciplinaryCluster(IDC)meetings.BothSATsandIDCsmeetweeklyforonehoureach.AttendanceandparticipationinbothSATsandIDCsismandatory.SATsmeeteveryWednesdayintheSATleader’sclassroomsimmediatelyafterschool.IDCsmeetduringadesignatedplanningperiodeachweekinthelibrary.Allteachersareexpectedtoattendallprofessionaldevelopmentmeetingsunlessotherwiseexcusedinadvancebytheprincipal.

Off‐campusprofessionaldevelopmentmustbepre‐approvedthroughtheProfessionalDevelopmentofficeinW100andwillconsistmostlyofIBandKilgotrainings.

Teacher Workday Theteacherworkdayis8:15a.m.until4:00p.m.Teachersmustsign‐inby8:15a.m.intheworkroom,nearthemainoffice.Thisincludesteacherswhohave1stand/or5thperiodsasplanningperiods.Likewise,teacherswhohave4thand/or8thperiodsasplanningperiodsmaynotleavecampusbefore4:00p.m.,theendofthenormalworkday.OnWednesdays,teachersmustmeetinSubjectAreaTeams(SAT)immediatelyaftertheschooldayends.Pleasedonotschedulepersonalbusiness(e.g.,doctorappointments,etc.)forWednesdaysasyouarescheduledtobeinSATmeetingsforonehourafterschool.

Ifyouareleavingthecampusduringtheschoolday,youmustseekadministrativeapprovalfortimesotherthanyour“duty‐free”lunch.Administrativeapprovalisnotrequiredifyouareleavingcampusduringyour“duty‐free”lunch,butyouarerequiredtouseappropriatecheck‐outandcheck‐insheetsonthecounterinthemainofficesotheschoolcanlocateyouinthecaseofanemergency.Thisformistobeusedatalltimesduringthenormalworkdaywhenyouareleavingandreturningtocampus.Teachersmustsigninandouteachday.

Teacher Attendance and Associate Teacher Requests TeachersaretoplacetheClassroomInformationSheetandAttendanceRostersintheirboxforthesub.Mostofthetimeteachersknowwhentheywillbeabsentandshouldhavethisinformationavailableoncethesubarrivesoncampus.HavingtheattendancerostersalleviatesthesubshavingtogototheAttendanceOfficeforrosters.

Whenanabsenceisplanned,leavelessonplansinyourboxforthesubstitute.LeaveemergencylessonplanswithyourSATleader.

TeachersmustincludetheirroomnumberandparkingspotwhenreportingtheirabsencesinAESOP.

TeachersmustreportabsencesintheAESOPonlinesystemortelephonesystemby6:00a.m.IftheteachercannotaccessthesystemtheyshouldnotifyMs.GibsonandPilarMartinez.Teachersshouldnotcallanotherteacheroranadministratoroncampustoreportanabsenceorrequestcoveragefortheirclass.

Subsarenottobeswitchedfromassignedpositionsunlesspre‐approvedbytheBusinessOffice.

TeachersmustfilloutanAbsencefromDutyReportimmediatelyreturningfromanabsence,oriftheyknowinadvance,thereportshouldbefilledoutbeforetheabsenceoccurs.

Dress Code Staffmembersaretowearappropriate,professionaldressatalltimes.MenhavetheoptionofwearingaLamarHighSchoolshirt,purchasedthroughtheLamarBusinessOfficeorstandardprofessionalattire(shirtandtie).Youareexpectedtopresentanappearanceappropriatetothehighstandardsofourschool.Readandcommittomemorythestudentdresscode.Pleaserememberthat,aseducators,wemustsetapositiveexampleforourstudentstofollow.Neatness,cleanliness,andgoodgroomingareimportantfactorsincreatingaprofessional,productivelearningenvironment.

Note:Coachesmustutilizewarm‐upsand/orprofessionalattireatalltimesotherthantheirspecificcoachingperiods.Shortsarenotpermittedintheclassroom.

Student Attendance Allstudentattendancerulesaredictatedbystatelaw.Bothcampusanddistrictlevelbudgetallocationsarebasedonstudentdailyattendance.Officialdailyattendanceisrecordedat10:30a.m.eachday.Teachersmustsubmitattendanceontimeeachdaywithnoexceptions.Attendancemustalsobetakenforallotherclassperiodswithinthefirst30minutesofclass.

Attendancechangesmustbemadeontheappropriateformandsubmittedtotheattendanceofficewithintwoweeksofthemarkedabsenceorattendanceerror.

Student Discipline and Management

Class Rules & Expectations Teachersareexpectedtoestablishproceduresforclassroomdisciplineandmakethemknowntostudents.StudentsmustbeintheLamaruniforminordertoentertheclassroom.

Student Supervision Teachersmustsupervisethehallsandpatiosduringthepassingtimebetweenclasses.Beatyourdoorsandvisibleduringallpassingperiodsbeginningatthe8:20bell.Teachersmustalsocloselysupervisetheirownclasses.Classesand/orstudentsarenottobeleftunattended.Youarelegallyresponsibleforyourstudents.Studentsarenottobesentoutofclassandputinthehallunsupervised.

Hall Supervision Duty InterdisciplinaryClusterhallsweepteamswillmonitorhallwaysandtheoutsideareas.YourIDCsweepteamwillbedeterminedduringAugustprofessionaldevelopment.Thesweepteamsmustbediligentinordertomaintainanorderlyandsecureschoolenvironment.Supervisionshouldbefriendly,businesslike,andencourageresponsiblestudentbehavior.Disrespectfuland/orabusivestudentresponsestoyourreasonabledirectivesshouldbereportedimmediatelytoanassistantprincipalortotheHISDpolice.

Supervision of Before/After-School Activities Sponsorsandcoachesofstudentclubsoractivitiesshouldbeespeciallydiligentinsupervisingstudentsduringnon‐schoolhourswhensecurityisoftennotavailable.Sponsorsmustprovidedirectsupervisionofstudentsinvolvedinschoolrelated/sponsoredactivities.Ifyourstudentsarepracticingormeeting,youmustbepresenttosupervisethem.

Code of Student Conduct EachmemberofthestaffwillbegivenacopyoftheHISDStudentCodeofConductforreviewandreference.Thisdocumentgivesveryspecificinformationrelatedtopoliciesandproceduresforalllevelsofmisconductandtherelatedconsequences.Italsoprovidesaguideforinsuringdueprocessforallstudents.Pleaseadheretotherequirementsofdueprocess,documentation,andappealprocedureswhendealingwithdisorderlyand/ordisruptivestudents.

PleasepayparticularattentiontoLevelIoffenses.Theclassroomteacherisexpectedtohandletheseoffenses.Afterunsuccessfulattemptsbytheteachertodealwiththestudent’sbehavior,thestudentisthentobereferredtoanadministrator.Insuchcases,teachersshouldprovidetheadministratorwithwrittendocumentationofthepreviousactionsandtheresultingstudentbehaviors.LevelII,III,andIVoffensesshouldbereferredtoOffice1asprescribedintheStudentCodeofConduct.

Student Property AllelectronicdevicestakenfromthestudentbytheteachermustbeturnedintotheBusinessOfficebytheendoftheschooldayinwhichitwastakenfromthestudent.Youmayalsocallextension350(Ms.PilarMartinez)tosendsomeonetopickupthedevicefromyourclassroom.

Student Dress Code StudentsmustbeintheLamaruniformatalltimeswhileoncampus.Studentsarenottobeallowedintotheclassroomiftheyarenotindresscode.StudentsoutofdresscodearetobesenttoOffice1immediately.

Assessing & Documenting Student Conduct Conductgradesaregiventoeachstudentattheendofeachgradingcycle.WhenconductgradesreflectaP(NeedsImprovement)oraU(Unsatisfactory,requiresadministrativeapproval),youmusthaveappropriateandrelevantdocumentation.Youmustbeabletoexplaintoeachstudentandhisorherparentthespecificreasonsforindividualconductgrades,justasyouwoulddoforacademicgrades.Undernocircumstancesmayconductbeusedbyateachertoimpactastudent’sacademicgrade.

Conduct Marks Thefollowingcriteriashouldbeusedasaguidelineindeterminingconductgradesatthecloseofeachgradingcycle:

• E(Excellent):Thestudenthasanexemplaryattitude.Thestudentiscooperativeandconformstoallschoolandclassroomrules.

• S(Satisfactory):Thestudentoccasionallyviolatesaschoolorclassroomrule,butbehaviorisgenerallyacceptable.Thestudentisgenerallycooperativeandusuallyconformstoclassroomandschoolrules.

• P(NeedsImprovement):Thestudentcommitsfrequentinfractionsofeitherschoolorclassroomrules.ThestudentfrequentlyviolatestheStudentCodeofConduct.Thestudenthasbeenreferredtoanassistantprincipal.

• U(Unsatisfactory):Thestudenthasapoorattitude,isuncooperative,anddisruptstheschooland/orclassroomactivities.Thestudentshowslittlerespectforschoolorclassroomrules.Thestudenthasbeenreferredtoanassistantprincipalmorethanonceduringagradingcycle,orhasbeensuspendedfromschoolattendanceasaresultofbehaviorsexhibitedinyourclassroom.

Counseling Referrals Counselorsareavailabletostudentsforavarietyofpersonal,vocational,andeducationalneeds.Asaclassroomteacher,youareoftenthefirsttonoticeorthefirsttocontactastudentinneed.Counselorsareavailablethroughouttheschooldaytoassist.Ofcourse,crisisinterventionsituationsarenotscheduled,butthereareavarietyofotherneedsthatcanbeattendedtoonamoresystematicbasis.Thelunchperiodsareaperfecttimeforastudenttoseekoutacounselorforcareerandeducationalinformation.Everyattemptwillbemadetoschedulecollegerecruitersduringthelunchessothatstudentsdonothavetomissclassestovisitwitharepresentative.Theremaybeafewsituationswherethisisnotpossible.Inadditiontotheregularcounselorassignments,thereisasubstanceabusecounseloravailabletostudentswhomaybeexperiencingdifficultyinthisarea.

Studentsmusthaveawrittenpermittogotothecounselorduringlunchorduringclass,exceptinemergencies.Counselorswillprovidestudentsreturningtoclassatimedpermit.

Legal Compliance

Transporting Students Teachersareonlyallowedtotransportstudentsindistrict‐approvedvehicles(e.g.,districtbusses,rentalvehicles).Atnotimeshouldateachertransportastudentintheirpersonalvehicle.Statelawisveryspecificandharshregardingtheliabilityfactorsrelatedtoateachertransportinganystudent.

Fieldtripsthatoccurduringtheschooldayplaceaspecialburdenonparticipatingstudentsandonotherteacherssincetheytakestudentsawayfromotherclasses.Inconsideringapprovalofsuchtrips,thePrincipaland/orDeanofInstructionmustbalancethebenefitsofthetripwiththe“costs”tothestudentsandschool.Ifyouhavequestionsconcerningfieldtripplanning,consultwiththePrincipalortheDeanofInstruction.

Fundraisers AllfundraisingactivitiesmustbeapprovedinadvancebytheBusinessManager.TheApprovalofFundraisingActivityFormmustbecompletedandsubmittedtotheBusinessManagerandapprovedpriortoanyfundraisingactivitytakingplace.AtthecompletionofallfundraisersyoumustcompletetheApprovalofFundraisingActivityFormtoreconciletheaccountandclosethefundraiser.Studentsmaynotsellunauthorizeditemsorservicesoncampusatanytime.Financialresponsibilityforafundraiserlieswiththefacultysponsor.

Lamar’sstudentactivityaccountsaresubjecttoHISDauditatanytime,sotheaccountsmustbekeptaccurateandproceduresmustbefollowedtotheletter.Allthoseinvolvedinfundraisingactivitiesshouldensurethattheirownconductputsneitherthemselvesnorothersintheschoolinjeopardy.TheBusinessManagerisavailabletoadvisethosewithquestionsaboutthesepolicies.

Outsideorganizationsshouldbevalid,stand‐aloneorganizationswiththeirownidentities.Thereshouldbenoconfusionoftheiridentitywiththatoftheschool’s.Theyshouldneverusetheschool’saddress,taxID,ornamesofschoolemployeesinconductingtheirbusiness.

Copy Center Twocopymachinesareavailableforteacheruseintheteacherworkroomlocatedonthesecondfloor.Aclerkisavailabletoprovidecopyservicesforlargejobs.Allowforatwo‐dayturnaround.Thecopyrequestform,locatedintheworkroom,mustbecompletedandsubmittedtothecopycenterclerk.

Basicschoolsuppliesarealsoavailableuponrequestthroughthecopycenter.

Library Use TeachersplanningtobringclassestothelibraryshouldmakearrangementsinadvancewiththeLibrarian.Studentsbeingsenttothelibraryduringclasstimemusthavealibrarypermitsignedtheteacher.

Scheduling Facilities Allstudentactivityeventsmustbeapprovedinadvancebytheprincipal,ordesignatedadministrator,andlistedwiththecampuscommunicationcoordinator.ThecampuscommunicationcoordinatormaintainsascheduleforeachofLamar’sfacilitiesandvenues.Timelyschedulingwillminimizeconflictbetweencompetingactivitiesandallowadequatepreparationforstudentevents.
