STEAM TRANSITION WORKSHOP

On Tuesday 22nd May, a select group of Year 6 students from our feeder Primary Schools attended a STEAM Workshop at Lambton High School. Hosted by Mr Bozinovski, the students worked through various activities during two sessions.

Lambton High School T(02)49523977 F(02)49562429 E:[email protected]

For Session 1 the Students worked through an introductory course on the 3D modelling program SketchUp, where the students had a competition to design a house using the software. Having established some foundation skills, the students then focused on the primary task to design a bag-tag/ keyring to be printed on our 3D printers.

During Session 2 the students participated in a robot space navigation challenge using our school Sphero Robots. The students were required to navigate a maze using block coding language after determining the speed of their robots after completing some mathematical equations. The students were mentored by Year 9 iSTEM students Nupur Garg, Alexa Stuart, and Charu Kansal, during the robotics challenge. The girls also presented a valuable insight into elective choices at Lambton High School to our feeder school students, providing examples of work undertaken during elective mathematics and iSTEM.

Overall, the students participating greatly enjoyed their day, having an early experience using our varied and innovative STEM learning resources. Students who attended were presented with participation certificates. Thank you to the Year 9 girls for their support, and Mrs Davies for her organisation and communication with our feeder primary schools.

CAREERS CORNER

Last Thursday, 152 students from Year 10, attended the Careers Expo at Newcastle Jockey Club. Students had the opportunity to visit over 100 exhibitors and discuss career pathways. Many students discovered new and exciting jobs and most importantly the expo inspired Lambton students to really start thinking about what they enjoy and how this passion can transfer into employment. It was a pleasure taking this well mannered group of students to an external classroom for career planning. Mrs Gocher

A White Card (also known as a General Construction Induction Card) is a mandatory work certificate required in Australia to order to work on a construction site and in some other industries.16 students successfully gained this certificate by completing a face-to-face government mandated course. Most of the students will be using this certificate for work experience in the construction industry. If students are interested in gaining this qualification, please see Mrs Gocher in the career office so another course can be organised.

OPEN BOYS FOOTBALL ROUND 4 AND REGIONAL FINALS On Monday 21st May, the Lambton HS Opens Football Team travelled to Magic Park to take on Muswellbrook HS in our re-scheduled Round 4 fixture. Lambton started brightly and would be rewarded for some good interplay as Alex Hilton would open the scoring for Lambton pouncing on a goal line scramble to toe-poke home. Nando Fameli would soon double

Lambton’s lead, running away to cooly slot home. Lambton would go to the break 3-0 up, with Hilton adding to his tally from a cheeky backheel.

After the break Lambton would continue to dominate with Fameli getting his brace. Goal of the match came from Hilton, securing his hat-trick with a smashing freekick from outside the box. Late in the game, Fameli would bag another goal securing his hat-trick. Lambton 6 defeating Muswellbrook 0, securing a spot in the regional finals on Wednesday 23rd May, versus Callaghan College. With Lambton needing a win to secure a spot representing the region, Callaghan would be no push over as many of our students played club football with our opponents, adding extra spice to the fixture. The game started a cagy affair, neither team threatened early on. A bursting run down the flank from left back Aiden Goodbun would bear fruit, cutting in towards goal he was clumsily brought down, penalty Lambton. Alex Hilton stepped up the spot and gave the keeper no chance. Lambton would go to the halftime break 1 goal to nil up. The second half started much like the first with our midfields trading blows leading to a few corners each, but few shots on goal. Samuel Haren’s tricky footwork in the box would lead to another Lambton penalty as he turned his player in tight quarters only to be felled. Once again, Hilton stepped up and dispatched the penalty. A silly freekick given away outside our box led to a Callaghan goal as they chipped over the top of the wall for their striker to run onto and bundle into the goal. This set up a very tense final 10 minutes with Callaghan beginning to take the ascendency. Our backs showed good composure to weather the storm. We would put the game out of reach after a quick break away, after our first shot was blocked the rebound fell nicely to Rory Kalnins to curl a fine shot to the back stick. Lambton 3 defeating Callaghan College 1. Lambton will now represent the Hunter Region as it’s “B” qualifier. We will take on the North Sydney B qualifier, game to be played before the end of term. Congratulations to all players who contributed to our success during the qualifying rounds. LAMBTON LIGHT THE WAY!!! Mr Bozinovski
