This story unfolds through a connection Henry Rhodes has with Andrea Feldmar of JFCS. She works with families who have children struggling with cancer. Last year Andrea mentioned to Henry about a family in such a situation and that the Holiday Season would be pretty bleak for them. Henry was so touched that he asked if she knew of any other families like that. When the answer was “Yes”, HOLIDAY CHEER FOR CANCER KIDS was born. LMA Pres. Don McMurray opened the meet ing by responding to a letter to the editor in the December issue of The Landings Eagle regarding budget reserves for road repaving. McMurray related reserves of $20,000-$30,000 a year for roads have been accumulating since 1996. Around 2010 the board decided to stop accumulating reserves for roads, but restarted the practice in 2012 at around $60,000 a year. By the end of this year he estimated $295,000 would be available for the first phase of road repaving in 2016. He went on to mention the board increased reserve budgeting for roads in 2016 to $100,000 per year. The cost of repaving the roads is expected to be around $200,000, due primarily to the current low cost of oil. McMurray added

the Board also has an equity amount of approximately $500,000. Michael Knupp ended the roads discussion by defending the detailed plans that Rudy Blohm had provided in his role as the roads committee chairman. The nominating committee is working to define the roles of Board members, including the length of time they should serve. They are seeking potential board members to fill four open positions. McMurray and the Board continues to seek residents to serve on a variety of committees.

FINANCEREPORT

Don McMurray shared a brief financial report in Marie Graziosi-Jacaruso absence. He highlighted a surplus of $17,194.95 through the month of October 2015, leading to a cumulative surplus of $88,068.25. He announced that a Universal contract billing error was discovered. As a result, Universal was overpaid by $23,984.16 for part of 2013 and all of 2014. The finance committee recommended that this overpayment be credited over a six-month period ending June 2016. The recommendation is currently under considerat ion by Universal’s corporate office.

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE

Co-chairs, Bob Manteiga and Joan Lowery reported restructuring is continuing on The Landings website.

Residents will notice several changes and improvements over the coming months.

ENVIRONMENTAL C o m m i t t e e c h a i r , J o h n C a r s o n r e p o r t e d prioritizing the completion of an application to receive a matching grant from Sarasota County. He also announced a representative from Sarasota County NEST would provide a presentation at a Thursday afternoon learning session. A date has not yet been determined.

LAKES Lakes chair, Larry Lawrence reported the dispute over sediment removal has been resolved. Additionally, the County has agreed to install a mechanism in the lake to help slow the build-up of a sediment shelf in the future. The main power line to the Treehouse Lake fountain has been temporarily fixed and will be replaced soon.

COMMUNITY HAULING

Larry Lawrence reported 17 residents participated in the November hauling program. He also clarified issues regarding fluorescent

bulbs and TV and computer monitors. Fluorescent bulbs must be included in the hauling program and cannot be put in regular trash. TV and computer monitors can be placed out with regular trash and are not accepted in the hauling program. Next COLLECTION DATE: February 10, 2016 from 8-9am at the North Gate.

EAGLE EDITORIAL COMMITTEE

Committee chair, Larry Lawrence commended The Eagle publisher on the great job they did on the December issue. He went on to announce two new members added to the committee. The talents of Bob Manteiga of the Communications Committee and Bridget Frymier of The Landings Learning Group will enhance the quality of the newspaper.

LANDSCAPING Landscaping chair, Joe Hennessy reported the annual tree and palm trimming has been completed and holiday lights were installed along the entrance at Landings Boulevard and at the North Gate. Damage done by a truck to an island on Peregrine Point Drive will be repaired soon.

wall power washing will begin soon. Painting and power washing of the gate house has been completed. He announced the committee was securing bids for interior road striping and reflector replacements.

Chairman Neil Goldman reported his committee met with Jimmy from the security staff to streamline the process of communicating their needs. H e a l s o s t a t e d t h e committee may need to deal with motorized vehicle and bicycle safety issues.

At its December board meeting, the Board approved a request for changes to the landscaping at residences on Kestral Park Lane and approved most of a similar request for one on Kestral Park Way North. It also approved the removal of several trees on a Landings Boulevard property to accommodate an approved expansion of the residence. Approval was granted to a Flicker Field Circle property for substitute plantings in the front of the residence and the installation of a putting green and small basketball court in the rear of the property, with certain restrictions. Further approvals included a cage expansion and a cage removal and other landscaping modifications to properties on Flicker Field Circle.

Three owners on the east side of Peregrine Point Way have agreed to a proposed project to remediate the recurring drainage problems on that side of the street. The cost of the project will be shared by the owners, the LHA and the LMA. On a related note, the board decided to establish a drainage reserve, funded to the extent of $5,000 per year, to prepare for what is expected to be continuing instances of drainage problems as the 30-year-old drainage system requires maintenance. The Annual Meet ing of The Landings Homeowners Association, Inc., will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Landings Racquet Club. At that meeting, there will be four directors to be elected. One of the current members of the board has elected to not stand

for reelection to the board. As always, the Board encourages a l l interested members to consider contributing their time and expertise to the Association through board membership. As the Board meets year-round, full time residency is encouraged. Members interested in running should contact Bill Whitman, Judy Greene or Dick Bayles with any questions or to indicate their interest in being on the ballot (their contact information is in The Landings Directory). The annual meeting materials must be mailed on or before January 21, so indications of interest should be expressed quickly. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be on January 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Landings Racquet Club.

LHA ELECTION: At the L a n d i n g s H o m e o w n e r s Association’s Annual Meeting on February 11, 2016, there will be an election for four members of the Board of Directors. As one of our current members had chosen to not stand for re-

election, we are actively seeking members who are interested in standing for election. As the Association’s board is quite active in the summer, full-time residence is encouraged, but not required. The election materials must

be mailed in mid-January; interested members should contact Bill Whitman, Judy Greene, or Dick Bayles with any questions and indication of interest as quickly as possible. Their contact information is in The Landings Directory.

The lack of inventory has not affected the sales for June in Sarasota and Manatee counties, sales have increased and sale prices are up!

“There hasn’t been a string of four consecutive months with sales this high in the history of this region,” noted Association President Stafford Starcher. “The closest we’ve seen to these numbers was in the spring of 2004 - - over a decade ago.”

“The existing inventory remains low in both counties, and that fundamentally tends to push price appreciation in a desirable market like ours,” explained Starcher.

President’s Column Additionally, any member of our association who would like to run for the board is welcome to submit their name to George at Argus for inclusion in the process. The board has four opening this election cycle. Two of the current board members have selected to run again and two members have decided not to continue on the board. The nominating committee anticipates having more candidates than openings so an election will take place at our February Annual Meeting. As most of you are aware, the board members are actually elected by the various association presidents. The association presidents will meet on January 20 at 7 p.m. at the Racquet Club and each candidate will have the opportunity to speak and present their interest in serving on the board. This meeting is open to anyone who would like to attend. Therefore, if there is one or more candidates that peak your interest contact your association president and express your support. Additionally, each candidate will be presented in the next edition of The Eagle. We are forming a sanctions committee with the purpose of reviewing instances of rule/policy violation and determining whether a sanction or penalty should be imposed on a

resident. A couple of residents have expressed an interest in serving on the committee, but I think the committee would function better if there was one or two more members. After some initial training this committee would only meet as needed. The primary criteria to serve on the committee is having the ability to be fair minded and having no clear connection to the board of

directors. One other committee is being formed – the Nature Trail Committee. This is an ad hoc committee formed to take a long term look at what is needed on the trail and how we develop or not develop that area. This committee will be charged with developing and make long range recommendations to the board. It should be a fun, but important, committee to work on. If you have an interest in either committee please contact me at – 941.921.5181 or [email protected] On January 5, Tuesday, I will be available to meet at the LRC from 8:30 to 9:30 am to discuss any issues, problems, or hear suggestions you may have that would benefit our community. Thanks and be safe over the holidays!

The Greener LandingsMost of us embrace health as

one of our number one priority.Wherever we are and probably everyday, we make several choices related to our mental and physical safety and health. Oh! How extreme we can get when reading labels, eating healthy, buying organic, taking vitamins, supplements and working out! We want to give our best effort because we deserve to be well and feel good.

Following the same line, we all need a healthy environment too! We deserve it. Even the worms in the soil deserve a healthy environment.

And since we are not detached from our surroundings and we owe so much to this community, we need to give to it the right attention and care.

We can make The Landings a sustainable community by taking significant steps that examine and restructure the way we manage our resources and by shifting our collective behavior to create a lasting difference in the preservation of our environment. That means

we have to read the labels and decide carefully on the rest of the things we do that extend to our surroundings! Sustainability requires the participation of all community members. The more, the merrier! A s t h e E n v i r o n m e n t a l Committee at The Landings we are aware of the many sources of impact that require our action. The work that all of us at The Landings can do is a demonstration of love and effort to diminish the negative impact, enhance preservation and leave a legacy for the future generations in our precious neighborhood. Therefore, constant particip-ation and will power is key to successfully accomplishing the sustainability goal. There are other communities here in beautiful Sarasota that have taken stewardship of natural resources and facilities, creating a laudable improvement on the use of resources and lowering their print in nature. These communities had great success in their endeavor

because they were engaged leaders and owned their plans. The areas of major impact in which we can accomplish short and long-term objectives are: Environmental conservation, water conservation, landscape preservation, waste reduction, and energy conservation/reduction. T h e e n v i r o n m e n t a l conservation/preservation of our natural resources: Mature and Floridian plant species –Florida friendly landscapes, preservation of the animals’ ecosystems and the adequate use of water in our neighborhood. Carefully observing that the use of fertilizer is minimized and that water runoff won’t pollute our waterways. Promote and educate about the use/application of non-toxic pest control substances for plants and insects. Encouraging pet owners to pick up their beloved companion’s solid waste –It is true that dogs’ waste pollutes the soil, attracts flies and spreads diseases. Not to mention the

unattractive look, smell and feeling if you get to step on one… Waste reduction: Although we do recycle at The Landings, we can improve –that i s reduce- the amount of waste we produce everyday. There are items that can be recycled besides plastic, glass and paper. Adding more recycle stations and opportunities for household hazardous or different things such as batteries, cell phones, bulbs or metals will help create awareness on the subject. Efficient use of energy: Whether in the privacy of our homes with our individual action plans or in the premises of the Landings Racquet Club, the smart use of energy requires thoughtfulness. It is not about “who pays the bill” It is the footprint in our world. Turn the light, fans and/or T.V. off after yourself, bring your water bottle and save plastic cups. Every little thing counts, because in the end, the sum adds up to a lot. Becoming a green community requires the concerted effort

and involvement of many participants. The dynamics of the procedure needs acquaintance and facilitation. The process and results need to be satisfactory to ourselves (neighbors) so that all will feel motivated and proud to bring a plan to fruition. Our wonderful Sarasota is already recognized for the sustainability practices, let’s emulate the good practice. Let’s adapt to the trend, be flexible and start a Yoga-Organic-Trader Joe’s-Whole Foods worthy way of treating our surroundings! Check out these sites for getting contagious information and share with your neighbors. Sign up to join The Landings Environmental Committee and participate with your valuable ideas and contributions!

January heralds in abundant local produce for the Phillippi Farmhouse Market. The market has traditional growers, hydroponic growers and 2 USDA Certified Organic growers. Quite a list of choices among fruits and vegetables in a weekday market. The Phillippi Farmhouse Market is open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. every Wed. through April. There are also artisans with handmade gift choices, food trucks with a variety of prepared foods and lots of choices for munching along as you stroll the market. Your well-behaved dogs are welcome on 6 foot leashes and we hope you will be responsible and clean up after them.

One of the highlights of the Farmhouse

market is the historical tour of the Edson Keith Mansion, given every Wednesday by a knowledgeable docent at 10 a.m. Please meet on the Mansion front porch a few minutes before 10 a.m. and know there will be only 1 tour given each Wednesday. Takes about 45 minutes and is a marvelous glimpse into the early days of the Sarasota community. The tour is free and donations to the restoration of the Keith Farmhouse next door are gratefully appreciated.

Sat., Jan 30 and Sun., Jan 31 the annual Winterfest at the Park Arts and Crafts show will take place at the front field of Phillippi. Ample free parking and a variety of arts and crafts. There will also be music and food vendors.

The next LMA Community Hauling Date will be February 10, 2016. The pick-up location is at the north gate from 8-9 am. Also the date appears monthly in the notification section of The Landings Eagle. Reservations are needed and can be made by calling George Niel of Argus Management at 941-927-6464 starting a week in advance. Currently there is confusion as whether florescent bulbs will be taken in the

weekly trash. Some have had them accepted while others have had them rejected. Until we get clarification from the County continue to bring them to the next LMA pick-up. Please remember that TVs and computer monitors are no longer accepted by the County so if they are brought to the LMA collection site they will be returned. You can now put these items out with the weekly trash.

Audubon Bird Census On Saturday, January 2, the local Audubon Society will be conducting their annual bird census. The

Landings is an important part of their count every year; while you probably won’t notice their presence, please welcome them if you meet them.

“Seen Along The Way” - a collection of work with fabric, thread and a sewing machine will be shown at the Altman Gallery of the Venice Art Center from Jan. 4 - Feb. 11, 2016. Isabel Anchin Becker of Sarasota, has been working with fabric as a quilter and now creates

these pictures from the photographs she takes, transferring them onto fabric to use as her base. The art center is located at 390 Nokomis Ave. S., Venice 34285 and open Monday -Saturday 10-5. A reception to meet the artist will be Friday, January 8 from 5 -7 p.m.

Current Events Round Table schedule The Current Events/Round Table series of presentations is looking forward to another stimulating season. Co-produced by Ralph Ricapito and Irv Kushner, a number of extremely interesting and knowledgeable speakers are being recruited. All talks will occur on Thursday afternoons at 2 p.m., January through March, in the Lakeside Room. Several of the presentations will deal with the topic: “Hidden Gems of Sarasota”. The first presentation falls into this category. On January 7, Dwight Davis of the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium will present “An Overview of the Mote”. The next week, January 14, Paul Sarno,

who fascinated us last year with an overview of Southeast Asia, will get more specific and tell us about “The Recent Burmese Elections”. Landings resident Frank Pipers will talk to us on January 21 about “Three innovations that influenced modern civilization - ramifications for our future”. He is a retired professor of medicine and pharmaceutical company executive. On January 28, Nora Patterson, who is running for State Senate, will tell us what she hopes to accomplish when elected. A long time Sarasota County commissioner, she served as its chair for 3 years. The former Bay Island Park has been renamed in her honor.

The Landings Photo GalleryBy Robert C. Manteiga (AKA Photos by Beto)

This month’s Photo Gallery features a variety of unique shots of The Landings taken by several Landings residents; certainly photos we don’t often see. The first two shots were taken by Jeff Crotty. One shows us just how much St. Francis loved animals. He didn’t mind if an occasional gecko walked on his head. The other is an interesting shot of a baby turtle wondering what’s out there. The next shot was taken by Teresa Manteiga. Over the past several weeks, a very mischievous Jack Russell terrier, by the name of Digger, has been mysteriously appearing in the front yard of several Landings residents. He was even seen at the Landings Racquet Club. Digger gets our vote for this month’s Dog of the Month. The other two shots were taken by yours truly. One is a shot of my backyard, overlooking Philippi Shores pond. I think the photo was taken in 1870. The other photo was taken at this year’s Father-Son Tennis Tournament at the Landings Racquet Club. Former tennis pro, Robert Ginepri, looks like he’s lost something…oh, yes, there it is! Remember…your creativity is always welcomed. If you have any interesting photos, please mail them into me at [email protected].

Racquet Club News

Happy New Year! I trust everyone had a safe and happy holiday season with all your family and friends. As a reminder, the Landings Racquet Club Annual Meeting will take place Tuesday, January 19 in the Lakeside Clubhouse at 7:00 p.m. You should have received the

annual meeting packet in the mail several weeks ago. Please sign and return the blue proxy to the Club if you haven’t done so already. Contact me by phone or email at [email protected] if you haven’t received your mailing or have questions about it. On December 13, the Landings Racquet Club held its Annual Holiday Dinner Dance. It was a wonderful event with 75 members in attendance. Chef James Riegel from Black Tie Catering prepared a fantastic dinner. I’ve always received positive comments on his food. Sammy J was back again for the second year in a row to provide the musical entertainment. He was accompanied by a different saxophone player than last year but the music was just as good. Thank you to Jill Eisner and her committee of Carmen Lawrence,

C h r i s K n u p p , S a r a h R h o d e s , Lenora Jost, Sandy Frank and Dawn Smith for their outstanding efforts in decorating the Clubhouse for the party. Events like this wouldn’t happen without all the volunteer help. Stop by and look at the pictures from the event if you would like. They are posted on the bulletin board by the coffee. Now that January is here, some of our regular activities will be starting up again. The Learning Group begins its nine program schedule January 13. Howard & Adrienne Feltman have turned over the reins to new co-chairs, Bridgette Frymier & Selma Savren. They are looking forward to an exciting schedule in their first year at the helm. The registration sheet for the series subscription is in the Pro Shop. Ralph Ricapito is ready to go with another Current Events Round Table series as well on Thursday afternoons. Look for the program fliers announcing the weekly performances or topics in your association bulletin boards.

The Club had a very successful year for 2015. We did the final update to our “out front” facilities, had a record number of members and burgeoning use of our courts, fitness center and clubhouses. As The Landings demographic gets younger, we can expect more usage in the future. 2016 will bring us “out back” updating – replacing the 30-year-old

maintenance shed with one that will accommodate all of the material now stored outside. Work should begin

just after the start of the year and be completed in about 10 weeks. During the summer, we will be improving the court drainage and then be able to clean up the main court path landscaping. The pool shower will be updated and court drinking fountains replaced. Finally, we will be replacing the Lakeside Clubhouse roof, which has repeatedly leaked over the past three years; apparently due to a poor original job 20 years ago.The Landings Learning Group and the Discussion Group will be starting up in January as the prime season arrives in full force. I encourage all our members to make the most of the opportunities they offer.

Happy New Year To All! Another year, another terrific Father/Son Tennis Tournament. We hosted a record number of teams and one father returned with a different son. The weather did keep us on our toes, though. Next year we will be adding the Ultra Senior Tournament - fathers must be over 80 years of age.

Thanks to Barbara, Deb, Dick, Paul, Kevin, Alice, Gary, Edvin, Hans and Jim. To Rudy, who again took photos of the teams, Dee and Ralph for all their hard work, all the many sponsors and the members who brought delicious dishes for the luncheon - always a big hit with the players.

There is still time to sign up for the Inter Club Tournament. Categories for play are ladies doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles. Matches will be scheduled on a day you normally play to avoid having to play an additional day of the week. Stop by the Pro Shop to register your team. If you need a partner contact me. I am looking for suggestions for tennis functions/round robins. I hope to put on an exhibition in late January/early February. John and I look forward to another busy year of tennis. If you would like to book a lesson or clinic, I can be reached at 941-993-2628 or [email protected]. See you on the courts........

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

In addition, Publix at the Landings provided a gift certificate for a turkey for each family. Through the kindness and generosity of many cash donations, Henry’s committee was able to buy gifts and food cards for some of the families who asked for help with their Holiday meal. And, as an elf, I gained so much joy in buying and wrapping gifts for my families knowing that I was going to bring a smile to several faces this Christmas morning. But, the really, really special part for me was Sunday morning when the families came to pick up their gifts. I was blessed to be able to interview many of them and their stories brought tears to my eyes on several occasions. Parents and children were so touched by the generosity and caring of The Landings elves. One mom said how tough this year had been and to see her son smiling holding his presents brought her incredible joy. I can’t tell you how many times she said thank you. Another man’s daughter was so ill that he had to quit his job to care for her but she was doing much better and he was so appreciative to us for making her Christmas so very special. He couldn’t do what we did. And again, more thank yous than you could count. Another mom thanked us for bringing joy to her children and wished us a Merry Christmas and for God to bless all of us. Another special experience was from one mom whose daughter makes every day the “Best Day Ever”. That’s her mantra through chemo and all the struggling she’s going through. She met Santa last week and that was her Best Day Ever. Thanks to our elves, Christmas morning, opening her gifts, will be The Best Day Ever. Another family spoke of the multiple surgeries their daughter had to endure over a short period of time and

how very special our kindness was and so very appreciated. Another mom was overwhelmed when she saw the gifts for her children. She had originally questioned whether they should par t i c ipate s ince they were doing ok financially but they decided if God offered this blessing, they should take it. In a time like this, to think that this family was thinking of other families, just warmed all our hearts. Another mom said, “There aren’t enough words to say thank you for this generosity especially now at the Christmas season. But to be able to watch his smile Christmas morning will bring me more joy than you can know. It is so tough to watch any child struggling with a disease but when it’s your own, it’s harder than anyone can imagine.” There are so many people to thank and they are: Karl and Ann Maggard and their Team of Jeffrey and Mary Kay Crotty, Dr. and Mrs. David Massari, Marielouise McHugh, Margaret Maguire, David and Leah Belle Chernov. Jim and Sandy Goldman’s Team of Rich and Joan Golub, Robin and Art Colamarino. Danko, Heidi, Ellie and Karina Bodor’s Team, Vera Bodor, Donna-Lee Roden, Pat and Maria Roden. Lenora and Jack Jost, Marti Maxim and Sands Robnick. We would also like to thank our two photographers Bob Manteiga and Jeff Crotty. In closing, I’d like to quote one of our elves, Carmen Lawrence, who summed it al l up so beautifully, “Looking back to my Christmas mornings, coming down the stairs and “seeing” Santa had arrived, brought joy and excitement beyond compare. That is why we are involved in this wonderful endeavor -- to make sure these children “See” that Santa did arrive!” If you would like to sponsor a family next year, and enjoy this very special part of the true meaning of Christmas, please contact Henry Rhodes at 941/927-1047 or email Jim Goldman at [email protected].

|The “Kitchen Ladies” RecipeTERESA MANTEIGA’S - Spinach with pine nuts and almondsEspinacas con piñones y almendras – Take 2

Publihser’s Note: Last month’s featured recipe by Teresa Manteiga included a mysterious item not included in her original recipe. Hopefully, anyone trying the recipe caught the extra ingredient. We are reprinting the recipe as was originally submitted to us. We apologize for this oversight.

• 1/4 cup olive oil• 1 large garlic clove, peeled and cut in half lenghtwise• 1/4 cup pine nuts• 1/4 cup blanched slivered almonds• 1 pound freshly cooked spinach, drained and finely chopped, or 2 ten-ounce packages chopped frozen spinach, thoroughly defrosted and drained• 1/4 cup finely diced “serrano” ham or 1 ounce “prosciutto” or other lean smoked ham• 1 teaspoon salt

NOTE: you can substitute 1 cup raisins for the ham. In a heavy 10- to 12-inch skillet, heat the olive oil over moderate heat. Add the garlic and, stirring constantly, cook for 1 or 2 minutes.Remove the garlic (optional). Add the pine nuts and almonds to theoil remaining in the pan and cook for 2 or 3 minutes, or until they are slightly brown. Add the spinach, ham (or raisins) and salt and toss together with a spoon until the ingredients are mixed and heated through. Taste for seasoning and serve at once. Serves 4.

Landings Publix Supports “Holiday Cheer For Cancer Kids” Program

The Landings Publix and Manager Sue Noel have been very supportive of The Landings “Holiday Cheer for Cancer Kids.”

Publix has made a meaningful donation from its corporate HQ that will assure that the 20 families who are being sponsored will have a great holiday meal.

Shown here are Karl Maggard, Publix Staff and Store Manager Sue Noel. Karl Maggard, a longtime Landings resident, worked with Publix on behalf of the program.

Landings Joyful Seasons By Dee Ricapito “Always laugh when you can, it’s cheap medicine.” - Lord Byron Hard to believe the summer season went by in a flash. Even Siesta Key’s Public Beach became an unrecognizable wonder, it seems, in the blink of an eye. Walking on our #1 Beach is like walking on the bright side of life. We already left the glorious holiday season which is great in The Landings where sociability with neighbors and families enjoy their visits indoors and out. It’s like a taste of warm heaven because neighbors

such as the Lawrence’s joined together groups making bowls for soup as a fund raiser to fight hunger; others like Judy Green and Tara Lamb supported Toys for Tots and hosted an open house for donations of unwrapped gifts; and many others such as Henry Rhodes and Jim Goldman, who together spearheaded a drive for gift giving to Cancer Kids; and our many neighbors who help make the holidays happier for others. Then it’s New Years, and we’re into the best time of all, another winter season where

we reunite with our snowflakes (neighbors), and snowbirds (friends) building a sense of comfort and connection all over again. I think, enjoying Landings living, having a sense of humor, exerc is ing, and enjoying others can do wonders for your attitude and is a key to aging well and increasing good health, longevity and our life expectancy. An Ancient Greek said, “The goal of life is to die young - as late as possible.”

There are three components that play a crucial role in the success of any company; location, a great product and happy customers.

Although some may argue that location isn’t as big as it once was, especially as more of the brick-and-mortar stores face the almost unfair advantage that shopping on-line offers, businesses are managing to find creative ways to bring their customers in the door. Some are fortunate to offer skills that on-line shopping cannot deliver.

One such business is A Lash Above®; a company that provides eyelash extensions to local residents and visitors. This company handily wins the trifecta that makes up a successful business.

Although it’s true that you can order fake lashes or eyelash extensions via the internet, not everyone has the patience and a steady hand to apply them correctly. The biggest drawback; however, may be the questionable quality of the products used. Inferior products and the skill of the technician may cost you more in the long run if you end up with an eye infection.

As a RN, owner Beverly K a t z e n b e r g e r k n o w s t h e importance of using someone who is certified in applying eyelash extensions. In fact, after extensive research, she found Xtreme Lashes® to be at the top of the list for quality products as well as a rigorous training program to guarantee that their extensions are safely administered.

Many customers find that once they try eyelash extensions they don’t want to live without it. They see it as a way to help simplify their life and look

beautiful at the same time.

As one customer put it, “My lashes have been the best beauty secret of all times. I have had them for over a year and I wouldn’t want to be without them. I would give up almost any other cosmetic with the exception of hair color, although, I would do my color myself in order to keep up my lashes. I wake up, wash my face, put moisturizer on and I feel ready to face the world. If I have something special in the daytime I will use powder and blush, but then it is out the door. The times that I have a special night out, the full make-up looks so dramatic with the lashes. I almost never wear mascara and when I do it is only on the bottom lashes.” Another satisfied customer, Candy Niziol of Venice, FL, says “Beverly and I hit it off the moment we met each other,” “After I left her office for the first time, I felt like a million dollars and each time thereafter. She transforms my little natural dull lashes into stunning beauties. My eyes become alive and awake due to Beverly’s talent. I no longer wear any mascara and it makes swimming, biking, tennis, running, and snorkeling even more fun; my lashes are always beautiful and I love it! People compliment me on my pretty eyes and lashes; I smile and say ‘Thank you’”. To keep the accolades coming and as a convenience to her clients, Katzenberger has added

other services over the years. It has allowed her to broaden her reach in the market. Sometimes that means an address change. This latest move allows her to expand her business giving the customer a truly one-stop rejuvenation experience. The new store, located at 5899 Whitfield Ave, in the Palm Aire Plaza will include massage, permanent make-up, electrolysis,

facials, and cosmetic injectables along with her eyelash extension services. One thing’s for certain, A Lash Above® lady will never have the unpleasant surprise of finding a set of false eyelashes floating in her drink during a night of fun with the girls or worse, on a first date. Gift certificates are available for purchase. They also offer bridal packages and have a rewarding referral program along with three locations for your convenience. Original Landings developer Robert (Bob) Morris of The Ramar Group tells The Eagle his vision for the Landings had always included a club of some type. As Landings Unit I was nearing completion plan for Landings South got underway. With no room for a golf course a first class tennis club including a heated pool, spa and exercise facilities was laid out. It was one of the first items constructed in Landings South. Documents for the LRC were filed in April or 1984 and a Grand opening celebration set for May 3, 1984.

An LRC newsletter at the time tells us: “All residents of The Landings were invited to look over the club facilities at a special residents’ reception held May 3. Guests were entertained by a rousing exhibition tennis match featuring Head Pro Bob Luxembourg and his USPTA staff.”

During the early life of the LRC it was managed by the developer who hired Bob Luxembourg as the tennis pro. Bob served the club for many years initiating and organizing tournaments as well as adding activities for non-tennis players including bridge, water aerobics, bird watching walks and the still familiar Koffee Klatch.

Initial construction of the LRC was financed by the developer. Annual operational expenses came from the annual club fees, as they do today.

Initial years, 1984 and 1985 had a bargain yearly assessment of $240. Membership was established as mandatory by each of The Landings South condo documents. No initiation fee was required of those units. Previous Landings units, individual homes, the Carriage Houses I & II and the Treehouses could participate by paying an initiation fee and the annual assessment. Over the years that initiation fee has varied from $1000 -3000. It is currently being waived to encourage participation by Landings I owners. The LRC was built while only a fraction of eligible c o n d o m i n i u m s w e r e constructed. Management faced a dilemma: how to get players interested and the courts in use. Today only Landings properties may join the club, but in its initial stages “no-cost” VIP memberships were offered players from outside The Landings. Memories vary between 10 and 50 such members. They later began paying dues. There is only one remaining VIPer who still comes from Siesta Key to play the LRC courts. One current Landin was enticed to move here by his VIP membership and remains active in The Landings and the Club. Luxembourg writes about the people involved in the “early days” and the significant contributions they made to the LRC’s future:

As the tennis director my office was a section of the fitness center. The only other building was the courtside club house. We promoted tennis for all and wife, Nordis, helped with regular mixed doubles round robins. Non-member players paying daily fees were welcome without a sponsoring member. Seton Olton, a VIP member, also set up matches for the men. He was responsible for the club joining the newly formed Sarasota County Sr. Men’s Tennis League. He was later their first secretary/treasurer. In those days, RAMAR, as owners of the club, had overall responsibility for its management. An advisory committee of members headed by Bob Witty and including Eb Blackett, Seton Olton, Frank Wickham and Ann Gamble was formed. Bob Witty (Treehouse owner) deserves credit for convincing RAMAR to relinquish ownership of the club with the proviso that all future Landings South owners, regardless of the builder, would be automatic

members. This made economic sense as RAMAR would sell the available building sites to other builders. It also was a benefit to our membership as some of the country clubs in the area were making members pay large assessments to purchase the club facilities (golf). I n t h e m i d - 9 0 ’ s , w i t h Landings housing virtually completed, improved meeting and social space was needed. A committee spearheaded by the late Bob Greenfield including Fritz Drybrough (deceased) and Ron De Anna planned and supervised the Lakeside Clubhouse. It was opened in 1995. In recent years virtually the

entire club, almost 30 years old, has been refurbished and updated. Pavers on the pool and deck, and entry way, vinyl fencing, landscaping; the meticulously maintained courts were resurfaced as necessary and fencing replaced; the pools maintained to Sarasota County’s high standards; remodeling and addition to the exercise facility; and Lakeside and Poolside Clubhouses and Pro Shop remodeled. Residents who are not members are welcome to stop by and see what the LRC has to offer. The box below describes a sampling of year round activities.

An Award Winning Teaching Artist Living in The Landings Vladislav Yelseyev, a Landings homeowner was recently awarded “Signature Member” of the National Watercolor Society for his painting titled, “Seine Barges” (France). Along with a welcomed cash prize. He was then awarded for his painting titled, “Boat Depot” by the Florida Watercolor Society. In addition, in October 2015, he received the prestigious BoldBrush Award sponsored by FASO, FINE Art Studio Online for his work, “Paris Tunes in Little Color”. He will also be featured in the Water Color Artist Magazine for his “Everyday Poetry” in his paintings of local and Parisian scenes. I attended Vlad’s workshop at his studio and loved the ease of which I was able to complete a watercolor landscape (never painted with watercolor before). I credit him as a fine teacher inspiring me to experiment with the basics and art techniques in a different medium. Vladislav together with his wife, Marina, opened the Renaissance School of Art about three years ago. Their classes are well attended by children and adults as well. Changing fine art exhibitions of local artists are exhibited there at the Studio. They just opened a new studio just north of Trader Joe’s. Many thanks to Marina who runs the school smoothly and for introducing me to the school. She also happens to be our Landings Tennis Team buddy.

SMH to offer Dr. Dean Ornish’s lifestyle medicine program to “undo” heart disease

Starting in January, Sarasota Memorial will begin offering the Ornish Reversal Program, the first proven lifestyle medicine approach to reverse heart disease without drugs or surgery.

Through more than 35 years of peer-reviewed, published research, Dr. Dean Ornish’s program has been proven to undo heart disease by making comprehens ive l i f e s ty le changes.

“This program makes a transformative difference by dealing with the root causes of your heart disease and not just its effects,” said Sarasota Cardiologist Chippy Nalluri, MD, Sarasota Memorial’s program advisor. “By changing the way we eat, move, manage stress and engage loving support, we can slow, stop and even reverse the progression of severe coronary heart disease and other chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and

early-stage prostate cancer.” The premise of the Ornish Reversal Program is simple: Participants enroll in a 9-week program that helps them adopt a healthy lifestyle based on four key program elements – a low-fat, whole foods, plant-based diet; 30 minutes of daily exercise; stress management; and social support. Participants are not left alone to figure out how they are going to change their lives. Instead, they attend 18 four-hour sessions in which a multi-disciplinary team teaches them exercise techniques; nutritional counseling that includes the Ornish diet and meal preparation; stress management techniques such as yoga and meditation; and even methods of communication through group discussions. Participants experience the program with a small consistent group of 12-15 people who all have committed to the common

goal of reversing their heart disease and improving their well-being. “People adopt this new lifestyle because they feel so much better so quickly,” says Dean Ornish, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of San Francisco, and President and Founder of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute. “They have found the inner sources of health, joy, and well-being.” Over the years, participants have reported that they were able to eliminate their chest pain, gain more energy, lower their cholesterol and blood pressure, and lose weight in a sustainable manner due to the program. Participants have also reported that because of the program, they were able to reduce their medication dosages, and sometimes drop medications entirely. A p p o i n t m e n t s & Information: The Ornish

Reversal Program has been so effective in undoing years of damage to the heart that Medicare and some major insurances now cover the program under a new benefit category—intensive cardiac rehabilitation—making it the first of its kind to receive this level of support. Conditions that may qualify you for the Ornish Reversal Program through your insurance include heart conditions, heart or valve surgery, angioplasty, stent placement and other cardiac conditions. To talk to one of Sarasota Memorial’s certified Ornish Program Specialists, call (941) 917-6139. Or visit www.Ornish.com for more information.

|Serenity and beauty draw residents to Eagles Point By Roger Drouin In the Neighborhood: profiles of communities in The Landings

Four five-story buildings comprise the “Eagles Point” community. In addition, there are three other buildings on Eagle Point Circle, but those do not bare the Eagles Point name.

The four Eagles Point buildings are located at 5420, 5430, 5440, and 5450 Eagles Point Circle. They overlook the Intracostal, Sarasota Bay and preserves.

From Maggard’s top-floor unit, he and his wife, Anne, also get a downtown view in the distance of the John Ringling Bridge’s lights at night and the Ritz Carlton. The views, all around, are beautiful.

“There is not a lot of turn over,” said Realtor Judy Greene, with Michael Saunders & Company, of the four mid-rises. That’s because many owners tend to retain ownership of their units. Condos rarely become available for sale.

“Many of the residents have been here for the entire life of the building (23 years),” Maggard told The Landings Eagle.

Karl and Anne moved to Eagles Point 12 years ago. They had lived in a single-family home in The Landings, on Peregrine Point Circle West previously. The couple wanted to downsize and move to a home that they could “lock and leave” when they traveled to Portland, Oregon for the summer. Their unit, at just over 2,000 square feet, has enough space for visiting family.

There is a mix of “different generations” who own units, from a woman in her thirties to retirees. Recently, Maggard has noticed pre-retirees purchase units in anticipation of retirement. Those owners will come down a few times a year, until they retire and move full-time or on a seasonal basis.

One of his neighbors has a condo unit on Longboat Key. “We joke that this is her city place,” Maggard said of the Eagles Point unit.

Other owners are traditional snowbirds and some call The Landings their main home, but travel throughout the year, Maggard said.

All of the buildings feature a garage on the first floor and four floors of residences above. Building One, at 5420 Eagles Point Circle, has 24 units.

The three other buildings, however, have 20 units. That’s because when the developer built those buildings (after the first building) the developer had realized that some people wanted more space so they enlarged central units to 3,000 square feet, Greene said.

The Eagles Point condominiums were built in 1992 and 1993. The luxury condominiums have access to a private, heated pool as well as membership to The Landings Racquet Club. Homeowner fees include the general Landings Management Association, an Eagles Point association, and the Racquet Club membership.

Recent Sales: There has been five recent sales over the past year. The sales price ranged from $300,000 to $700,000. In addition, three units are currently on the market and two more were pending a contract, as of press time. At the top sales end, a luxuriously renovated three-bedroom, 2.5-bath end unit sold for $700,000 in June. At 2,078 square-feet, the sale came out to $380 a square foot. The unit has water views from nearly every angle. The unit includes a renovated chef’s kitchen. A two-bedroom, two-bath unit with 1,603 square-feet sold for $615,000 in April. The home has tile in the main living areas and hardwood floors in the bedrooms. A smaller two-bedroom, two-bath with 1,330 square feet sold for $310,000 in October. The second floor unit overlooks a lake. Another two-bedroom, two bath unit with 1,520 square feet sold for $439,000 in March. A 1,843 square-foot three-bedroom, two-bath, first-floor unit is currently listed for $739,000. Another first floor unit, with the same square footage, is listed for $675,000. It has a southern exposure, facing the Intracoastal Waterway. A 1,936 square foot unit with three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths was under contract, as of press time. Its listing price was $525,000.
