Fishing Report from the Gazebo

First let me confess that I love to fish, even when I don’t catch a lot of fish. I especially like fishing at the end of the Landings nature trail by the Gazebo, which is one of the best fishing spots in our area. Where else can you go, within walking distance, and have a scenic place to sit or fish by the water. It is not uncommon to see bottlenose dolphin and manatees passing by the Gazebo as well as all kinds of birds and beautiful boats.

While I like to wade fish, you can also catch lots of fish while casting from the Gazebo. This summer has been one of the best for fishing at the Gazebo that I have experienced in my 25 years fishing from that same location. This past month, I have been catching at least 15-25 fish on each of my outings. The most common species is mangrove snapper. However, we are also catching lots of large black drum and yellow tail Jacks. (Jack Cravalle). An occasional red fish and snook can be caught now as well as small grouper, ladyfish and flounder. Catfish are plentiful as are sheepshead. Needlefish and gar are also hanging around the Gazebo. I recently caught a silver Jenny, which I’ve not seen before

at that spot. At other times of the year expect to catch pompano, permit, mackerel, trout and an occasional stingray, lizard fish, pin fish and blow fish. I’ve caught over 20 different species of fish at that one location. There is a reason why fishing from the Gazebo area is so productive. The Intracoastal Waterway narrows just north of The Landings so the water flow and current can be strong, which flushes lots of fish through that area. I’ve found that an outgoing tide is best but even on incoming tides, you can catch lots of fish. At what is called “dead tide”….just as high or low tide ends…..fishing tends to be the slowest. The best tackle to use at the

Gazebo is a rod (that is long enough and flexible so that you can cast into the water) and a spinning reel. A starter combo rod and reel can be found for about $35. As you move up to better equipment, it can be more expensive. I recommend using live shrimp on a bare hook with a split shot about 18 inches above the hook. Personally, I frequently use a small jig head and put live shrimp on the jig. Live shrimp can be found at Economy Tackle on Tamiami Trail and Mr. C B’s at the South Siesta Bridge. I cast out into the inter-coastal and let the current take the bait while I periodically bounce the bait off the bottom. If you are just starting out, I always recommend that you talk to the pros at the bait and tackle shops for advice related to the type of fishing that you are planning. Heavier tackle is required for fishing in the Gulf than in the flats, bays or by the Gazebo. Just a reminder, you need to have a fishing license, even if you are not fishing from a boat. If you are a Florida resident over 65 or under 16 years of age you do not need a license but will need to provide proof of age if requested by marine and wildlife agents. We can’t wait for the new gazebo to be completed. While it is not designed for fishing it has been a great place for many who like to fish but do not want to wade fish (standing in the water) in front or on side of the structure. LMA President, Henry Rhodes opened this month’s meeting by announcing the Co-Chairs of our Nominating Committee, H e i d i B o d o r a n d G e o r g e Michalopoulos, for the February 2015 board elections. Both Heidi and George have lived in The Landings for several years and are parents of school age children. Heidi writes the Kids Corner article for The Landings Eagle and George helped build The Landings website. They are able to add members to their committee as needed. The committee will be seeking qualified candidates from all segments of The Landings, including parents with school age children and qualified women who wish to serve. Rhodes appealed to board members and everyone in attendance to submit names of potential board candidates to Heidi and George.

THE NOMINATING PROCESS

The committee will provide their qualified slate of candidates for the board’s consideration and recommendation at the November 6 board meeting. The Landings Eagle will -- as before -- carry pictures and copies of their resumes in the December and January issues. Since the Presidents of our 20 associations elect the members of the LMA Board, Rhodes requested that, as in the past, the Presidents’ Council invite the candidates to a special meeting in January to provide them with the opportunity to meet and ask questions of the candidates. The actual election takes place by written ballot at the February 5

Annual Meeting. Following this election, board officers are elected by members of the board to serve a one year term.

FINANCE REPORT Finance committee chair, Don McMurray reported that through the first six months of the year, they are $42,125 under budget. This is largely due to the timing of upcoming expenses. McMurray went on to thank the committee chairs for their continued fiscal sensitivity and ask that they follow the same conscientiousness throughout the remainder of the 2014 budget cycle.

YEARLY ASSESSMENTS McMurray reported that only four residents remain who have not paid their yearly assessments. All accounts have been turned over to the LMA attorney for processing and debt collection according to LMA policy.

2015 BUDGET Don McMurray reported distributing a budget process plan that the finance committee will follow. Following this step-by-step process will ensure the Board of Directors can approve the 2015 budget at the November 6 meeting.

AESTHETICS Aesthetics committee chair, Truman Menefee reported he would keep his comments brief this month highlighting only two items. Remaining upgrades to the S curve are scheduled for September and the Gazebo steps needed to be raised again to make it safer.

ARCHIVES Archives Chairman, Robert Manteiga submitted his report via speakerphone from Salamanca, Spain. He reported that he met with Henry Rhodes and Jack Jost several weeks ago and culled documents that were deemed unimportant or irrelevant. Manteiga believes they now have a well-organized and easily accessible digital library. The committee’s next step will be to get all relevant information on The Landings web site. DRAINAGE Committee chair, Jack Jost reported Florida Mangroves (Derek Sherman) had completed the semi-annual cleanup of all major swales that take storm water to the bay. Overholt Landscape Services is completing the project to clean out the Pintail Way Creek.

INTERSECTION CONGESTION

There was no progress to report. Without some progress soon, LMA may have to resume efforts to obtain a Declaratory Judgment or abandon plans to modify that intersection. The board promised to provide more details on this issue at the next meeting.

EAGLE EDITORIAL COMMITTEE

Committee chair , Larry Lawrence commended The Landings Eagle publisher, Bob Stein, for the excellent work in maintaining interesting editions each month throughout

the summer. He also thanked contributing authors and support teams.

LAKES Lakes chair, Larry Lawrence reported that the planting of The Landings South IV Preserve area in accordance with the county’s mandate was complete. Invasive species have also been eradicated. Jim Henslick, LMA’s consultant, reported to Andrea Lipstein that all county requirements were successfully completed and the plants and trees should do well in the environment. Aquagenix, LMAs contractor, w i l l p e r f o r m q u a r t e r l y maintenance by assessing the vegetation growth process, replace plants as necessary and keep the invasives under control. Lawrence publicly thanked Aquagenix for work they accomplished beyond that which was covered by their contract. They cleared a lot of dead vegetation in the area to improve the overall appearance. Lakes containing algae blooms are being treated and fountain outages are being repaired.

LANDSCAPING L a n d s c a p i n g c h a i r , J o e Hennessy reported on several landscape issues. The Landings summer cleanup is complete. This included weed treatment and trimming and pruning of all the islands. Vegetation was cleared that was obstructing the view of drivers turning from Heron Way to Landings Boulevard. Hennessy and landscape contractor, Merle Raber identified 10 areas where low hanging tree branches needed trimming. In addition two hardwood

trees, 85 palms in the LMA islands and common areas will be trimmed for approximately $2,180.00. The landscaping committee is intentionally holding off pruning the palms on the east side of Kestral Park Way N. near the north gate as these palms provide a screen, hiding the Shopping Center for residents turning from Pine Harrier Circle. They plan to add more screening and prune the palms next spring. A joint effort between the Landscaping and Aesthetics committees has begun to upgrade the LMA landscape lighting on Landings Blvd. including the Route 41 monuments. Some lighting will be retrofitted with LED lighting guaranteed for 5 years. Over the course of time, the new lighting will lower monthly electric bills.

ROADS Roads chair, Rudy Blohm reported the committee had received several requests for road repairs. They will develop a plan including expenses for the repairs and report to the board at the October meeting.

GAZEBO UPDATE Rudy Blohm reported that Florida Shoreline & Foundation, L M A c o n t r a c t o r f o r t h e reconstruction, is waiting on the assignment of a building permit from the county. Blohm raised a new concern regarding the condition of the nature trail bridge that would need to be crossed as the old gazebo debris was removed and materials for the new gazebo were brought to the site.

After not meeting in July the LMA Board August 7 meeting tackled a full agenda. I announced the appointing of George Michalopoulos and Heidi Bodor as co-chairs of the Nominating Committee for board members to be elected at the February 2015 annual meeting. Their committee will report the slate of candidates at the November board meeting and publicity for all candidates will be included in the next two issues of The Landings Eagle. A meet the candidates will be held by the President’s Council in January the month before the election. All residents are encouraged to send names of potential candidates to the co-chairs. Please look elsewhere in this issue for a short summary of The LMA Disaster Plan. I want to express our appreciation to The Safety and Security Committee for formalizing the plan which required many long hours to complete. Hopefully it will

assist our various associations to develop their own plan to coordinate with it. We want to be prepared but hope we do not need to actually activate the plan. On August 13, Rudy informed me that the construct ion permitting for our new gazebo on the inter-coastal waterway has been issued. We expect construction to start now in a couple weeks. Repairs to the bridge leading to the gazebo are currently under consideration. Decision regarding this situation is expected soon.

The summer is passing quickly. Enjoy the remaining weeks with fun and travels.

As all of the courts were rebuilt from ground up over the past five years, t h e r o u t i n e a n n u a l “redressing” ensures that our courts will remain among the best in the area. By the time you read this, work should have begun on our project to replace our parking lot lighting. This has been a personal concern of mine for several years, and we will have it completed for the coming season. Our objective is to provide better illumination of the parking area itself with minimal “spill-over” to the adjacent residential areas. Unlike the current lighting, it will operate from both a timer and photoelectric sensor so that they do not operate all night. I want to remind all members and guests that video cameras monitor and record virtually all of the Club’s premises, as noted on the

sign at the entrance gate. It appears that the Club has a problem with after-hours access by guests of members avoiding the Club’s minimal g u e s t f e e s , a c l e a r abuse of membership privileges. Therefore, we now routinely review

our video records for after-hours activity in violation of our guest fee policy. We ask your cooperation in observing this policy. This is also a good time to remind everyone of the rules regarding use of the pool:• Rafts, rough play, running or throwing objects are not permitted in the spa.• Children under 12 must be supervised by an adult.• No children under 12 in the spa. Persons using the pool do so at their own risk. The club does not have a lifeguard. Smoking is not permitted on club premises.

I send all the emails blind so your address won’t be shared. Last month, on August 15th, the Club hosted our 2nd Annual Family Swim Night and Pizza Party. Unfortunately this year the weather wasn’t as cooperative. Mother Nature put on a lovely display of storms with lightning and thunder during the morning and afternoon. Luckily the clouds parted around 5:00 PM. I think the bad weather kept a few people away but that didn’t dampen our spirits. Although the pool wasn’t as active as it could’ve been, the pizza party was well received. Roughly

45 people were in attendance including 18 kids. Thank you to Judy Greene, Tara Lamb and Barbara Pendrell for their time and energy in making the event a success. Be sure to mark your calendars for “Lessons for Life” Saturday, November 8th beginning at 4:00 PM. “Lessons for Life” is a charity event that benefits the Center for Building Hope. This will be the 9th consecutive year that The Landings Racquet Club has been the host facility. Many of our area’s most talented tennis professionals are donating their time and talents to conduct clinics from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. At 6:00 PM there will be an exhibition by the Pros, dinner, music and a Silent Auction. Space is limited to the first 150 people. Due to the circumstances, our fearless party committee led by Jill Eisner, went out in search of new entertainment for our party. They selected another vocalist with similar taste in music to Earl’s. His name is Sammy J and he will be accompanied by Wright the saxman, a live saxophone player for this year’s event. Stay tuned for more details as the year draws to a close.

September is the month that redfish begin schooling up in Sarasota. The expansive shallow flats in Sarasota Bay are traditionally the most productive areas to fish. A low, incoming tide in the morning is preferred, allowing anglers to see the large schools of reds. As the tide rises, the fish will work up from the edges of flats and holes onto the grass to feed. Locating the fish can be difficult under flood tide conditions. Speckled trout fishing has been outstanding this year and this should continue in September. Deeper flats will produce more fish, while the larger specimens may be found in shallow water. A Rapala Skitter Walk or X-Rap worked over bars at first light is a deadly technique for fooling gator trout. Along with trout, anglers fishing the deep grass will catch a variety of species this month including bluefish, Spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, pompano, gag grouper,

and ladyfish. Both live bait and artificial lures will catch plenty of fish. A gold Cotee grub on a ¼ ounce jig head is a great choice for anglers who enjoy casting artificial lures. Olive (08) X-Raps and other plugs are also effective along with gold and silver spoons. A live shrimp under a popping cork is a time-proven technique for catching “specks”. Snook will migrate from the beaches back into the bays. Both passes will be great spots to fish, especially on afternoon outgoing tides. The bars and mangrove shorelines along Siesta Key are prime spots as the fish move towards their fall feeding areas. Artificial baits will allow anglers to cover more water, while a well full of pilchards practically guarantees success. Redfish, large speckled trout, jack crevelle, and mangrove snapper may also be encountered while pursuing the mighty snook. Lighted docks and bridges are

snook magnets and will provide great action for anglers looking to catch fish and escape the summer sun. Live and artificial shrimp free lined in the tide are deadly, as are small white flies. Surf fishing off the Siesta Key beaches should be good for snook, ladyfish, Spanish mackerel, pompano, and other species. Point of Rocks is the best spot as there is a lot of fish-holding structure. Live bait such as shrimp and small bait fish works great. A #1 live bait hook with a short piece of leader and a split shot is the preferred rig. Spoons, plugs, and jigs are also effective baits in the surf. The rocks and bridges in Big Pass will be excellent spots to target mangrove snapper this month. They will be migrating into the Gulf of Mexico. Slack tides are the best times to drop a live shrimp or bait fish along the structure. Don’t be surprised if a big snook intercepts a bait meant for a mang!


|The “Kitchen Ladies” Recipe

Bonnie gave us this healthful recipe at a “Ladies Birthday Luncheon”. It works well for her as a Salad or a side veggie.

Total Time:30 minPrep: 10 minCook: 20 minYield: about 4 servings

Ingredients:• 2 bunches kale, thick stems and ribs removed, leaves coarsely chopped• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil• Salt• 1/2 a lime• Parmesan wedge Directions: Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. In a large bowl, toss the kale with the olive oil and a few pinches of salt. Spread out the kale on a large baking sheet; the kale can be piled up a bit. Bake until a little crispy on the edges but still tender, about 20 minutes. Remove the kale from the oven. Squeeze lime juice over the top, grate some Parmesan and serve warm.

Q: Why is dark (baking) chocolate more toxic to dogs than milk chocolate?

A: All chocolates are not created equal and any chocolate lover can tell you so. Many have only chocolate flavors. Milk chocolate, for example, has a low percentage of coco bean. Dark chocolate, on the other hand has a high percentage of coco bean, ranging from 50-90%. The more coco, the

darker and the more bitter the chocolate, the more risk arises. Coco has an agent called theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and like caffeine, can lead to tremors, seizures and even death. Toxin doses are 20 mg/kg and up and death can occur at 200 mg/kg of theobromine. Baking chocolate has about 150-450 mg of theobromine per ounce and is very dangerous if ingested. Chocolate toxicity signs may not arise for hours and can last days. The rule of thumb is, if in doubt call your vet clinic and let them know what chocolate your dog ingested. They will guide you to either induce vomiting if needed, or to bring your dog

in for treatment even before the symptoms arise.

Q: Cats seem so limber; do they also have back (spine) problems? If yes – what type?

A: Yes, cats also suffer from disc herniation albeit rare. Spine cancer is another problem cats may face. Some breeds have anomalies of the spine (Manx). In general, cats do indeed present with less back problems than dogs.

Q: My poodle had a surgery for bloat (stomach torsion). What is the likelihood of this happening again?

A: Bloat, which is gas filling of the stomach, can happen again. If the stomach is tacked however, torsion is unlikely anymore. This is why we often recommend doing stomach tacking in large breed and deep chested dogs before the problem arise. For example, my dachshund Tommy had bloat and torsed his stomach like a wet cloth that you ring out. His stomach needed to be tacked on both ends. His problem was inflammatory bowel disease. He still gets gas and I have to watch his food (no gluten), but overall he’s a happy dog now.

In June 2005, the Town of Hempstead (one of two municipalities on Long Island, NY) was showering us with adoption pamphlets for the local animal shelter. It was a Friday and both of us were off from work, so I suggested to Jeff we “just go look for fun.” He growled at me, “Yeah, yeah, that’s all we need – another dog!” “Just LOOK,” I said. The rest is history. Goldie, arguably a Chow mix or Shiba Inu (Who knows for sure?), soon to be nine years old, was a furry skeleton tossed out on the street with bite marks from larger dogs on top of her head, a nervous pup – one roomful of chewed up furniture, two bottom steps of our upstairs stairwell reshaped, and one pair of shredded Land’s End sandals later, is now the queen of the household. (Really, it isn’t me.) She is really smart, playful, and friendly, yet opinionated, especially when it comes to cats, squirrels, geckos, small birds, and even insects, all of whom she holds in extremely low esteem. She loves to take long walks, something she had no opportunity for in New York, where we had a dog run in the

backyard and the weather was not often conducive to hanging out, and is tolerant of and/or indifferent to other dogs. Her favorite toy is a squeaky rubber ducky. Jeff, who had said, “Oh, no! No more dogs!” (she’s our fourth) dotes on her as a true doggie parent.

Here is what Lou has to say about fishing in Sarasota: “Fishing is fabulous year-round in Sarasota Bay and the inter-coastal waters. Species range from speckled trout, mangrove snapper and Spanish mackerel to redfish and black drum. Just outside the passes along the buoy lines occasionally you can find the elusive triple-tail, all great eating. And of course a number of skilled anglers bring home supper with fish caught off our own Landings’ gazebo. Don’t forget tarpon season from late May through early July for the fight of your life.”

The board of directors “runs” the association. Even if there is a professional manager employed, the board is responsible for making policy decisions and directing the manager. So what can the members do if they feel the board of directors is not representing their best interests? The members can attempt to “recall” all, or some, of the directors. Both Chapters 718 (condominiums) and 720 (homeowners’ associations) of the Florida Statutes, and the related sections of the Florida Administrat ive Code, have detailed provisions related to “recall.” It is not an easy process to perform correctly, and the rules must be followed exactly. A board member may be “recalled” by a majority of those entitled to vote. No particular reason has to be given. If it appears the necessary vote has been obtained, either in writing or at a members’ meeting called for that purpose, then the current board is required to either certify the recall (in which case

any members “recalled” must step down immediately) or file a petition for arbitration with the Division of Condominiums, Timeshares, and Mobile Homes (“the Division”). The existing board must take one of those actions within 5 business days after the adjournment of the members’ recall meeting or within 5 business days after being served with a written agreement for recall signed by a majority of the members. If the existing board fails to act, there are procedures the members can follow to involve the Division. The Division will not get involved in the recall process if there are 60 or fewer days left in the director’s term. (Simply wait and vote the person out of office instead!) Similarly, the Division will not get involved if the director sought to be recalled has not served for at least 60 days. (Let’s give the new folks a chance to get up to speed before seeking to oust them!) If less than a majority of the board members are removed by

recall, then the remaining board members are entitled to fill the vacancies. If the recall removes a majority of the board, then the members vote for replacement directors at the recall meeting. Again, the Florida Administrative Code contains detailed rules governing every aspect of a recall and these must be followed. Recalls often fail for technical reasons. Even when they succeed, the effort and cost, and the negative energy generated, seem to result in a “lose, lose” situation, rather than a “win, win.” Unless conditions are simply intolerable, spending time and energy to come up with a better slate of candidates for the next election is generally the better option. While removal of directors is sometimes an issue, it is more common for an association to have the opposite problem; that is, what to do when there are not enough volunteers to serve as directors? Directors are either elected by the members or appointed by

a majority of the existing directors. Generally, directors may only exercise t h e i r p o w e r t o a p p o i n t o t h e r directors when there is an opening on the board caused by the resignation or death of a director, or the failure of enough candidates to run for the available positions. It is common to find associations where the members of the board have served for years with little turn over. When those board members finally step down, it may be difficult to obtain others to fill the open positions. If it is always difficult to find qualified candidates to fill all open positions, the association may wish to consider amending its documents to reduce the number of required board members. An odd number is desirable to avoid tie votes. If an association cannot get enough members to f i l l the vacancies on the board so that there is a quorum (the minimum

number of directors required to conduct association business), a n y m e m b e r may apply to the circuit court for the appointment of a

receiver. Since the association will be responsible for paying the salary of the receiver, along with court costs and attorneys’ fees, this is an expensive option. All of the members will share this cost as part of their assessments. When members are made aware of the cost of this alternative, volunteers will often step forward to serve to avoid a receivership. Next month, we will consider some ways to address the lack of volunteers to serve as directors. This column is not intended to provide specific legal advice and should not be relied upon for that purpose. Dental Anesthesia There’s no doubt about it, teeth and gums can be sensitive. Often, local anesthetics are administered to make patients feel more comfortable and treatment easier by numbing the gums and teeth. Idea for Hurricane Re-entry Pass Falls on Deaf Ears A t t h e A p r i l a n d J u n e Siesta Key Association (SKA) monthly meetings, one of the items presented than later discussed was the Post Disaster Redevelopment Plan (PDRP). At present, we’ve been told, the PDRP is a work in progress with final approval scheduled for October. In these meetings, SKA board member Paul Wilkinson and I disagreed with Sarasota County and the City of Sarasota’s proposed re-entry plan in place for the PDRP. We were invited to meet with county officials to share our ideas in depth on July 9th. I met with representatives from the City of Sarasota and Sarasota County. Representing Sarasota County was Scott M o n t g o m e r y , C a p t a i n J . Walsh and Lt. Deb Kaspar for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department. Representing the City of Sarasota was Todd Kerkering, City Emergency Manager and Sgt. Lori Jaress for the Police Department. At the meeting Todd Kerkering indicated that their plan was developed af ter extensive studies of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. They determined the top priorities during such an event were to keep order and protect property. I shared my experience of owning property on Fort Myers Beach when Hurricane Charlie hit Florida in 2004. It was a category four hurricane and

the plans that were in place proved to be inadequate. At the time, officials barred anyone from returning to the island mainly for fear of looting. Unfortunately, this caused even more property damage due to mold. As a result, proper steps were put in place to address these problems. One solution was to allow island residents re-entry sooner to start the cleanup process. The Town of Fort Myers Beach uses car window stickers and valid passes seasonally from June 1st through the end of November. Since the PDRP Sarasota County is developing will only be implemented once a hurricane or major disaster happens, it becomes a reactive plan. Both Paul Wilkinson and I contend that the PDRP should be proactive believing Siesta Key should follow a plan similar to what other island communities have adopted after they were hit by a hurricane. By acquiring car stickers, wrist bands and passes every year prior to hurricane season, residents and business owners will be able to re-enter Siesta Key and Bay Island immediately after the government officials give the all-clear for re-entry. Kerkering listened politely and noted that all properties in Sarasota County would need to follow the same guidelines. C h e c k p o i n t s w o u l d b e established for each area. He used Gulf Gate as an example and said it would go through

the same process as Siesta Key. I responded that there are 20 different ways to re-enter an area like Gulf Gate vs. the two bridges for Siesta Key and felt that having the re-entry pass before disaster strikes, similar to what Ft. Myers provides, allows residents a more rapid return. He indicated that the Town of Fort Myers has the power to implement this policy for its residents since they are incorporated. Because Siesta Key is one of a few Keys/Islands throughout F l o r i d a n o t i n c o r p o r a t e d (Township), residents must follow the regulations the County institutes. Captain Walsh discussed the sophistication of the criminal element to loot property after a disaster. How they would be able to quickly replicate items such as the re-entry pass if they are issued ahead of time. I agree with Captain Walsh’s assessment but believe that whether passes are issued ahead of time or not, the criminal element could have already replicated these items, as I wait patiently in line to obtain my re-entry pass since this process can take days, depending on the extent of damage. The meeting concluded with no plans to incorporate these suggestions to the PDRP they have in place citing that they believe their plan is best suited for Sarasota, including Siesta Key. Below is the plan the County is looking to implement.

General re-entry procedure Sarasota County 2014 All vehicles and/or individuals desiring entry into a previously evacuated area will be required to pass through a series of screening processes prior to gaining access to the affected area. All vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be routed through a credentialing area where the vehicle and/or citizen(s) will be checked for proper credentials. Law enforcement officers will determine if a person has a legitimate right or need to access an evacuated area. Persons approved for access will be issued a wrist tag. Valid credentials shall include, but are not limited to the following:

• Driver’s License• Voter’s Identification Card

• Property Tax Bill• Utilities/Phone Bill

• Employee ID Card/Letter from the Business on Company letterhead• Pay Stubs from Island Business

• Rental or Lease agreement When cleared, vehicles and pedestrians will proceed along the designated re-entry route for access to the evacuated area. Vehicles and pedestrians not having proper identification shall be denied clearance and rerouted from the area.

My father often told his three sons, “If you don’t know something, say, ‘I DON’T KNOW.’ “ This was before you saw such bumper stickers as: ”Hire a Teenager While He Still Knows Everything.” Long after I was a know-it-all teen, my first teaching job was instructing foreign speakers in ESL. Some of you do this today as volunteer work. In taking this teaching job, I naturally thought I knew a lot about my own language. So if any foreigner asked me about English, I could surely come right up with the answer. Yet I also tried to remember my father’s sagacious advice. One of the first tongue-tying questions asked by a rather advanced ESL student went this way. “Professor, I’m confused. Are there any spelling rules in English? I mean, like, sometimes you double consonants, other times you don’t. Aren’t there any rules? Some words, spelled

differently nevertheless sound the same. Like steel/steal; dear/deer, or mined/mind. Some that are spelled the same mean different things...” Another student noticed that some words don’t double the r’s, such as: difference, reference, or conference while others do: referred, deferred, ferried, etc. Remembering my Dad’s axiom, I politely responded, “I don’t know. I’ll look into it.” As I took that query home to sleep on it, I realized something like this was also going with both “r’s” and “l’s” in our language. For instance, we spell some words with double “l’s,” others, not. As in the preferred spellings of the following words better spelled with single than double consonant ”l’s”: cancel - canceled; pencil -penciled; counsel - counseled; stencil - stenciled, etc.. Yet other “l”-words we tend to double, as in: propel -propelled; dispel - dispelled; distil - distilled; expel - expelled.

Why? the ’l’ in proPELLed is doubled just as it is in comPELLed because that syllable is stressed (namely, the “-PELLED”). This seems to work in most cases. On another occasion, a foreign student asked me this stickler: Why are certain three-word expressions in English always voiced in the same word order? Like “men and women,” “bacon and eggs,” “boys and girls,” “yes and no”?

Nesting in the Treehouse By Gretchen Mannion

My interior design approach in our newly renovated home takes advantage of our Landing’s Treehouse’s natural surroundings. By focusing on a neutral color palette of subtle beiges and grays and sophisticated finishes and fixtures, the spectacular views are preserved in this open floor plan. My design philosophy of pairing contemporary elements with both rustic and vintage accessories, make for an elegant, yet inviting retreat. We had been renting a Landings Treehouse unit and were in search of another rental unit as our current lease was almost up. I looked at our current home as a possible rental and exclaimed, “I cannot live in this house!” due to its poor condition. Ironically, we bought it one month later!

Initial Inspiration Because a treehouse is only slightly over 2,000 square feet, I wanted to take advantage of every inch making every room both functional and beautiful. I often start with the wallpaper. I LOVE LOVE LOVE wallpaper. It should take your breath away and set the tone for a room. In fact, I used a total of 10 different wallpapers in my home. I selected a Carl Robinson enormous repeat medallion wallpaper for the tall living room that is seen by all of the other rooms, thus set the tone of the room and the adjacent wallpapers followed with complimentary colors, patterns and textures. All of the more permanent or long term purchases were selected in neutral tans greys and beiges. Pops of color were used to give personality, composition and whimsy to the rooms.

OLD ITEMS I purchase old items at auction and thrift shops not knowing exactly how or where I will use them in a project. I just know that when an item is right and it must be able to stand alone, being

beautiful, then the how and where follow.

EX 1: Pop Art of a paint brush, cereal bowl and whiskey were purchased at auction and ended up inspiring the family room with a pop art theme.

EX 2: The colorful columns on stone bases separating the kitchen and dining area were found at Sarasota Salvage and are believed to be from Charles Ringling’s house. We love that this brought a Sarasota circus element to an otherwise neutral space.

EX3: The tribal mask bought at auction brings an unexpected element to an otherwise formal space, therefore making it more inviting.

EX4: The black and metal deer head bought at auction for $20 and found to be an original deco display from Neiman Marcus, compliments the leather and antler chair purchased at The Woman’s Exchange.

EX5: The Moroccan doors made of camel bones were purchased from a designer in Ft. Lauderdale, who had originally imported them for one of Donald Trump’s New York properties.

EX6: The mirrored master bedroom closet door on barn hardware was a three paneled mirror purchased for $200 at the Woman’s Exchange. They are a Julian Chichester piece that was originally priced at $5,700.

EX7: The Italian Tiles purchased for the foyer and now in the outdoor shower arrived damaged with the corners chipped and cracks throughout. We were refunded. I thought why not use them in the outdoor shower! The fact that they have character adds to the whole outdoor natural look!

We had moved from the Main Line of Philadelphia and sold our last home completely furnished. We were literally starting from scratch. We made an effort to purchase as much from Sarasota as possible to keep our money in our own community. Sarasota has some of the best consignment stores in the world! And I should know since that is what I choose to do when I travel. My GC, John McNicol, of McNicol Building Contractors got me from the very first meeting. I wanted to create the most amazing space possible. He has worked in most of the surrounding units and knows them inside and out. I wanted to push the envelope and do things that no one else had attempted in an effort to accommodate our lifestyle of

entertaining often. I had high expectations and John exceeded them! Proportion and scale were very important in this project due to the high ceilings and open floor plan. The wallpapers and paint colors served the purpose of creating a beautiful cohesive space. Patterns and colors can advance or recede based on size and design. Large patterns and horizontal lines will actually recede while vertical lines will appear to raise the ceiling height. Small patterns will often advance. Colors evoke emotion. There is an entire psychology of how they make us feel. Blue and grey calms while red creates energy. Cool colors recede while warm ones advance. I believe that the entire process of creating a beautiful space should be a pleasure. The final result should always be a reflection of the home owners and NOT the designer. No two houses I have designed even resemble each other. I pride myself on getting to know a homeowner in the initial consultation and selecting things that will not only surround them but actually reveal their own style. Everything should and can be beautiful. It does not have to be expensive to make it great. I have two favorite books that are my go to guides to design. Good Taste Costs No More by Richard Gump and A House in Good Taste, by Elsie de Wolfe who said what I feel, “I am going to make everything

around me beautiful. That will be my life.”

Details The chevron or herringbone floors encourage the eye along them making the space seem larger as does tile set on the diagonal. The commercial vinyl in the kitchen is easy on the body and almost indestructible which is great because I drop everything! Concrete countertops in the kitchen add an industrial element. Teak root tables in both the entry and living room add a natural element. The rivets in the wallpaper, desk chair and desk show a repetition of details that make them pop.

What was different in designing this space?

Sometimes it is hard for a designer to work on their own home. They are too close to the project at times. In fact, I have helped other designers and consider it the biggest compliment. For my home, I flew down Steven Sillman, formerly of Ralph Lauren Home and a merchandising expert, to

help me put it all together in the end. Smart designers are able to listen to subcontractors and those that specialize in certain areas to make the final product a work of art! Speaking of art, my husband, Bix is an artist and has several works hanging in our own home. In fact, he received first place in Uptown Art’s Dog Days of summer art show.

That query I also took home for “further study.” Did I get very far with it? No. Finally, I thought, I had at least a partial answer to the

question of these word orders. Maybe we tend to put them in alphabetical order. As in “shoes and socks,” “bacon and eggs,” “day and night” (lyricist night-hawk Cole Porter reversed this word order in his famous song, probably in order to make a point about the allure of night), “lemon and lime,” “now and then,” “down and out,” “ins and outs,” “coats and hats,” etc. Alas, this rule does not

always hold. We also say, out of alphabetical order, “ladies and gentlemen” just as we say”to and fro,” “up and down,” “friend or foe,” “salt and pepper,” and so on. So, here we are as ENL speakers with only a few rules to help our ESL students. Plus we’re stuck with that doozy of a piece of English orthography, “GHOTI.” Right: the translation is FISH.

LMA Meeting Notes

New GFS Marketplace store opening in Sarasota

The estimated cost of replacing the bridge portion crossing the water is $14,475 and the cost of replacing the entire bridge is $40,650. The contractor was concerned, but didn’t believe the condition of the bridge would prohibit them from replacing the gazebo. SAFETY AND SECURITY Co-chair John Carson reported the Decal Verification Project was underway. Fifty-seven of

the 117 households representing 102 vehicles, have submitted the necessary forms. C a r s o n r e p o r t e d t h e completion of a final draft of a LMA Hurricane Procedures document . The document describes the responsibilities of The Landings Management Association in the event of a hurricane emergency with respect to security, roads and common areas. A lively discussion ensued regarding debr is removal concerns and other emergency topics among board members and residents who attended the meeting. Many legitimate

concerns were raised. LMA President, Henry Rhodes pointed out that all Association presidents and Landings residents need to be aware of their responsibilities in the event of an emergency. Safety & Security Committee Co-Chair Lou Furlong reported on results of The Landings speed limits policy. Two resident’s decal barcodes were suspended by action of the LMA board implementing the speed limit policy. The committee hopes that as violators decal barcodes are suspended, word will spread, and residents will travel The Landings roads at posted speeds.
