This thread links acting, talk show hosting, reporting, writing, and—more recently—teaching and coaching physicians and executives in the art of communication. Raised in NYC, from ages 3-8 Joan danced with “The Youngest Ballet Troupe in the World” on Children’s Hour on NBC. By the time she graduated from high school, her tutu was gathering dust. She attended The Fashion Institute of Technology and briefly considered a career as Fashion Coordinator. Joan found herself drawn to a more serious world. It was the era of Vietnam and Civil Rights. At the age of 18, she joined the summer program of Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), where she worked with an Ojibwa tribe in Northern Minnesota. This experience whetted her appetite for social action. The following year, after Martin Luther King’s assassination, she signed up for an Ethical Culture Society community service project in Shorter, Alabama where she lived and worked with teachers from a rural Black farming community to set up a summer school for kids. Joan now opted to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a major in theater. There, a British professor by the name of A. C. Scott opened her eyes to Asian Theater techniques and styles, an experience which was to color her life. Drawn to enter the field of socially conscious political theater, Dr. Scott’s influence led Joan to England, which was considered to have the best drama schools preparing for the stage. Joan spent her first year abroad acting in lunch time, pub-based theater in London, as well as performing around the country with Triple Action Shakespearian Theater, one of the better known fringe theater companies. During her second year of study in London Joan read about the genre of Children’s Participational Theater. After graduation, she moved to Boston, where she joined Theater Workshop Boston (TWB) acting and teaching company, a leader in integrating theater in education with performance. At that time grants were given for bringing original theater into that city’s segregated schools to facilitate academic learning and cross- cultural appreciation. Joan worked directly with kids and also trained teachers in workshops lasting 8-12 weeks. Organizational Psychologist Dr. George Litwin, the Father of Organizational Climate, was impressed by Theater Workshop Boston’s groundbreaking work. Dr. Litwin’s expertise involved analyzing the management “climate” of a particular company, establishing which skills were needed to be effective within that climate, then training employees to maximize those particular sets of skills. As an experiment, Litwin brought Joan and other members of Theater Workshop Boston to NYC where they worked with Ivy-League types at Citibank. Their system of using theater to improve communication skills met with grand success, even among these well- educated groups. “I love this!” thought Joan. She continued working with Dr. Litwin as a consultant and entered graduate school at Antioch in Cambridge, MA, earning a Master’s Degree in Adult Education and Counseling. After graduate school she worked full-time with Litwin, who encouraged her to use her background as an actress to help corporate managers learn new ways of communicating. Afterrisingprojectcostsandan unexpected permit delay,Sarasota County is finallymoving towards a January2016constructionstartdateforthelong-plannedTurtleBeachrenourishment. That’s because somerecent good news out ofTallahassee and progresswith a federal environmentalpermitapplicationwillensurethe county can completethe project, Laird Wreford,Sarasota County CoastalResourcesManager, toldSiesta Sand. Thecostof theSouthSiestaRenourishment Project—which will buffer two milesof beach including TurtleBeach—has been rising, from$19.8millionjustayearagotoacurrentpriceestimateofcloseto $22million. That’s almosttwiceasmuchasinitialprojectestimates of $11.5 million. The rising cost of mobilizinga giant ocean-going dredgevessel is a major contributorfor the “skyrocketing” cost of

beach nourishments, Wrefordsaid. But county officials saya $2.75 million state awardapprovedbythelegislatureinJunewillprovidethefinancialboost needed to move aheadwiththeSouthSiestaproject. For some time, it appearedthat the projectmight not getany funding from the state.Back in April, at the SiestaKey Association meeting, where County CommissionerHines was the guest speaker, the commissioner said thisregarding Turtle Beach’srenourishment; “If we don’tget state money this year,Turtle Beach probably won’thappen.” “We are happy about it,”Wreford said about the stateaward,“thatitwasmorethanzero.” Following a tumultuousregular legislative session, state legislators wrapped upthe budget session in June,in the process setting asidealmost $8 million for beach

renourishment efforts onVenice, Siesta Key, LongboatKey, and Anna Maria Island. But the award earmarked forSouth Siesta project—which,if completed, will widen theTurtle Beach public park andareasdirectlytothenorthandsouth—wasofnote.Itwasthelargest state award for localbeachprojects. The county, however,originallyrequested$7millionin state funding, and it is stillseeking another $4.25 millionfrom the state. “We will bebackwithafollowuprequestin the subsequent year oryears,”Wrefordsaid. But Wreford said the $2.75million-award is enough forthecountytomoveaheadwiththeproject’sJanuary2016startdate. The coastal resourcesmanager is hopeful that arequest for follow-up fundingis more likely to be fulfillednowthatthestatehasmadeaninitialinvestmentintheproject.

That’s important becausethe closer the county gets tosecuringthe$7-millionamount,the less Tourist DevelopmentTax dollars it will have tospendontheproject.“Thestatefunding [of $2.75 million] iscertainlyasignificanthelp.Ifwefailedtogetanystatefunding,we would be able to do theproject, but that would reallycutintoTDTfunding,”Wrefordsaid.“Thatwouldhavelimitedthecounty’sabilitytodomoreprojects and additional SouthSiestarenourishments.” In addition to the statemoney, funding optionsinclude: Tourist DevelopmentTax,MunicipalServicesBenefitUnit (MSBU), and commercialborrow.

Permit progress Another crucial element ofthe beachproject is securing afederal permit—a process thatwasdelayed inspringbecauseof the potential presence ofa recently-listed shorebirdduringitsannualmigration. InMarch, countyofficialslet

residents know the scheduledstart date for the project hadbeen delayed, because of thepotential presence of the RufaRedKnot, athreatenedspeciesprotected by the EndangeredSpecies Act in 2014. Thepotential stopover of the RedKnotduringmigrationdelayedthe permitting process, andsince spring the county hasbeen working to put specificsafeguards in place to protecttheRedKnot andLoggerheadseaturtles.

“The Red Knot is not verycommon in our area but itcan potentially use our gulfshoreline during its trip,”Wrefordsaid. Similarbeachrenourishmentprojects elsewhere in Floridaalso faced temporary delaysbecause of the federalpermittingprocess. “If a nesting pair [of RedKnots]weredocumented, thereare things we have to do,”Wrefordsaid.

ICE IT!I love ice! Is that bad? Many of us like sucking and chewing on ice. It’s cool, no calories and refreshing. However, it’s a major cause of broken teeth and dental restorations!Ice is very cold and chills teeth to make them more brittle.Add to that that ice is very, very hard. Now you’re biting into a very hard substance with cold, brittle teeth and it’s a terrible recipe for cracks and fractures. So, unless you like it so much you don’t mind the problems it causes; consider breaking this habit before it breaks you!
