Laois County Council Arts Service invites applications for awards and opportunities
to individuals/groups and organisations
Midland Artists/Musicians/Writers/Filmmakers/Theatre Makers/Dancers
The Midland Arts Offices of Laois, Offaly, Westmeath and Longford an-nounce a new Midland partnership with the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris to offer a month long residency to a Midland professional artist to take place between Sept 2016 and June 2017. Closing date - January

Arts Act Grants 2016
Provision has been made by Laois County Council for the payment of grants to Laois arts organisations and individuals who meet the artistic
and financial criteria set down by Laois County Council. Maximum amount payable will not exceed €1000.
Tyrone Guthrie Residency Bursary Awards 2016
A bursary is available to enable two Laois artists to spend one week working at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Monaghan. Open to artists in all
fields and is selected on previous achievements and projects in hand.
Artists in Schools Scheme 2016 Grants are available for artists’ residencies in schools, to include all art
forms. Gives primary and post primary schools the opportunity to select and work with professional artists and explore new arts media.
Culture Night 2016
Expressions of interest are invited from arts and culture groups and indi-viduals interested in organising events to be included in the funding appli-
cation process for culture night in September 2016.

LAOIS YOUTH THEATRE NEWS
Laois Youth Theatre will start back in the Dunamaise Arts Cent re for the New Year on Saturday 16th Jan to re-hearse for performances of a play and monologues to be performed in April 2016

One of the most significant exhibitions of Irish artists in recent years launched in glór this December ahead of an extensive nationwide tour. The exhibition marks 30 years since Local Au-thorities embarked on providing for the arts locally, featuring 30 artists and 30 places, Featuring re-nowned artists such as Tony O’Malley, Alice Maher, Robert Ballagh, John Kindness, Norah McGuiness, Sean McSweeney, Sean Lynch and John Shinnors, Clare is represented by a work by Theo McNab, purchased in 1983. This touring exhibition, which is being funded by the Arts Council, is the first real public telling of this story. Laois School of Music News
Laois School of Music had a wonderful series of concerts during Performance Week in De-cember – 10 in total. There was some really great talent on show from pupils of all ages on a variety of instruments - Clarinet, Saxophone, Piano, Flute, Guitar and Violin. The Orchestra and Ensemble Concert was a highlight of the week with over 70 performers lifting the roof with a spectacular sound that included Music Generation Laois Brass and Orchestral Per-cussion students. The overall standard of musicianship improves every year and was very evident in this series of concerts. The School of Music will celebrate 15 years of musical excellence in 2016 and it’s continued success bodes well for the musical future of County Laois. 2015 for Music Generation Laois
culminated with a series of con-
certs and the School of Rock &
Pop EP Launch with Duke Special this December. 20
different concerts took place around the county, children
taking part in Music Generation Laois programmes
showcased all the hard work they have done throughout
the year in a variety of programmes including Stampede
Drumming, Choral & Harp!
On 6 December, Irish Singer-Songwriter Duke Special
back to Portlaoise to launch the School of Rock & Pop
EP in Kavanagh’s Live Music Venue, Main Street, Port-
laoise. In July 2015, Duke Special visited Portlaoise and
spent 2 inspirational days with young musicians from the
Music Generation Laois Summer School of Rock & Pop,
developing songwriting skills. Young musicians spent 8
intensive days, writing and recording 3 new songs which
were recorded in Golden Egg Studios, Portlaoise. On the
night, the young musicians performed their songs to a
captivated audience with Duke Special also tato the stage
to perform some of his original music.
The Laois Arthouse Exhibition Programme
February to December 2016 •Feb 11th-Mar 4th Artist Sue Reid will exhibit. Her work appears as a sculpture at first
glance, but it is in fact a painting that has been lifted off the canvas.
•Mar 17th-April 15th Artist Aislinn O'Keeffe will exhibit. Aislinn's work explores the role
of early 20th Century revolutionary Irish women through a series of text art and drawings.
•May 5th-May 27th Artist Marie O'Brien will exhibit. Marie's work in oils focuses on the
figure in the landscape.
Also to look forward to and coming up in the programme will be exhibitions by Mary Lee
Murphy, Dorothee Kolle, Nuala O'Sullivan, Lorna Corrigan and Mette Sofie Roche.
